23:36 여호와께서 또 내게 이르시되 인자야 네가 오홀라와 오홀리바를 심판하려느냐 그러면 그 가증한 일을 그들에게 말하라

23:37 그들이 행음하였으며 피를 손에 묻혔으며 또 그 우상과 행음하며 내게 낳아 준 자식들을 우상을 위하여 화제로 살랐으며

23:38 이 외에도 그들이 내게 행한 것이 있나니 당일에 내 성소를 더럽히며 내 안식일을 범하였도다

23:39 그들이 자녀를 죽여 그 우상에게 드린 그 날에 내 성소에 들어와서 더럽혔으되 그들이 내 성전 가운데에서 그렇게 행하였으며

36 The Lord said to me: “Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Then confront them with their detestable practices, 37 for they have committed adultery and blood is on their hands. They committed adultery with their idols; they even sacrificed their children, whom they bore to me, as food for them. 38 They have also done this to me: At that same time they defiled my sanctuary and desecrated my Sabbaths. 39 On the very day they sacrificed their children to their idols, they entered my sanctuary and desecrated it. That is what they did in my house.

23:40 또 사절을 먼 곳에 보내 사람을 불러오게 하고 그들이 오매 그들을 위하여 목욕하며 눈썹을 그리며 스스로 단장하고

23:41 화려한 자리에 앉아 앞에 상을 차리고 내 향과 기름을 그 위에 놓고

40 “They even sent messengers for men who came from far away, and when they arrived you bathed yourself for them, applied eye makeup and put on your jewelry. 41 You sat on an elegant couch, with a table spread before it on which you had placed the incense and olive oil that belonged to me.

23:42 그 무리와 편히 지껄이고 즐겼으며 또 광야에서 잡류와 술 취한 사람을 청하여 오매 그들이 팔찌를 그 손목에 끼우고 아름다운 관을 그 머리에 씌웠도다

23:43 내가 음행으로 쇠한 여인을 가리켜 말하노라 그가 그래도 그들과 피차 행음하는도다

23:44 그들이 그에게 나오기를 기생에게 나옴 같이 음란한 여인 오홀라와 오홀리바에게 나왔은즉

23:45 의인이 간통한 여자들을 재판함 같이 재판하며 피를 흘린 여인을 재판함 같이 재판하리니 그들은 간통한 여자들이요 또 피가 그 손에 묻었음이라

42 “The noise of a carefree crowd was around her; drunkards were brought from the desert along with men from the rabble, and they put bracelets on the wrists of the woman and her sister and beautiful crowns on their heads. 43 Then I said about the one worn out by adultery, ‘Now let them use her as a prostitute, for that is all she is.’ 44 And they slept with her. As men sleep with a prostitute, so they slept with those lewd women, Oholah and Oholibah. 45 But righteous judges will sentence them to the punishment of women who commit adultery and shed blood, because they are adulterous and blood is on their hands.

23:46 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 그가 그들에게 무리를 올려 보내 그들이 공포와 약탈을 당하게 하리니

23:47 무리가 그들을 돌로 치며 칼로 죽이고 그 자녀도 죽이며 그 집들을 불사르리라

46 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Bring a mob against them and give them over to terror and plunder. 47 The mob will stone them and cut them down with their swords; they will kill their sons and daughters and burn down their houses.

23:48 이같이 내가 이 땅에서 음란을 그치게 한즉 모든 여인이 정신이 깨어 너희 음행을 본받지 아니하리라

23:49 그들이 너희 음란으로 너희에게 보응한즉 너희가 모든 우상을 위하던 죄를 담당할지라 내가 주 여호와인 줄을 너희가 알리라 하시니라

48 “So I will put an end to lewdness in the land, that all women may take warning and not imitate you. 49 You will suffer the penalty for your lewdness and bear the consequences of your sins of idolatry. Then you will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.”

오늘 본문 말씀은 하나님께서 북 이스라엘인 오홀라와 남 유다인 오홀리바의 죄악들을 적나라하게 밝히시고 그에 따른 심판을 선고하시는 내용입니다. 겉으로는 성전을 지키며 하나님께 제사를 드리는 모습으로 여전한 하나님의 백성 노릇을 했지만 그들의 속마음은 전혀 다르게 이방 나라들과 동맹을 맺으며 종교적, 정치적 외도를 저질렀습니다. 그들이 아무리 고귀한 척, 신실한 척을해도 그들의 속마음을 다 뚫어 보시는 하나님 앞에는 아무 소용이 없습니다. 우리의 중심을 보는 하나님 앞에 다시 한번 겸손히 우리의 마음을 살펴보는 새벽되기를 원합니다.

Today’s passage reveals in stark detail the sins of Oholah (the northern kingdom of Israel) and Oholibah (the southern kingdom of Judah), and pronounces God’s judgment upon them. Outwardly, they continued to maintain the appearance of being God’s people—keeping the temple and offering sacrifices. But inwardly, they entered into alliances with foreign nations and committed religious and political adultery. No matter how noble or faithful they tried to appear, none of it had any meaning before God, who sees straight into the heart. May this morning be another time when we humbly examine our hearts before the God who sees our innermost being.

먼저는 오홀라와 오홀리바에 대한 재판입니다. 하나님은 두 가지 면에서 그들의 잘못을 드러내십니다. 첫 번째로 종교적인 죄입니다. 37절에 나왔듯이 우상숭배를 하여 저지른 행음죄가 있으며, 자녀를 우상에게 제물로 바친 살인죄가 적용됩니다. 더하여 38절에 성소를 더럽히고 안식일을 범한 것도 추가됩니다. 이 때 하나님은 그들이 이러한 행위를 “내게 행한 것”이라며 강조하십니다. 왜냐하면 성소와 안식일은 하나님께 속한 것이기 때문입니다. 그리고 39절에 보면 그들이 자녀를 우상에게 제물로 바친 뒤 그 같은 날 성소에 들어왔음을 고발합니다. 이로인해 그들의 피 묻은 손으로 제사를 드렸기 때문에 성소가 더러워졌다고 하십니다. 이 부분을 읽었을 때 우리가 예배 시작 전 드리는 회개 기도가 얼마나 중요한지 다시 한번 경각심을 느낍니다. 한 주간 세상 가운데에서 살면서 알게 모르게 지은 죄들이 많을 텐데 그러한 것들을 전혀 회개하지 않고 가벼운 마음으로 예배를 드린다면 그것은 마치 자녀를 희생 제물로 드리고 피가 묻은 더러운 손으로 예배를 드린 오홀라와 오홀리바와 다를바가 없다는 것입니다. 그러니 주일 아침에 허겁지겁 예배가 시작 된 후에 가까스로 예배당에 들어오는 것이 아니라 최소 시작 5-10분전에는 들어와 회개하며 예배를 준비하는 자세가 필요하겠습니다.

First comes God’s judgment on Oholah and Oholibah. Their sins are exposed in two ways. The first is their religious sin. As verse 37 says, they committed adultery through idolatry, and even sacrificed their children to idols—a sin of murder. Added to this, verse 38 says they defiled the sanctuary and desecrated the Sabbath. God emphasized that these acts were done against Him, because both the sanctuary and the Sabbath belong to the Lord. Verse 39 further reveals that after sacrificing their children to idols, they came into the sanctuary on the very same day. God charges them with defiling the temple because they offered worship with hands stained by blood. Reading this, we are reminded of how important our prayer of repentance before worship truly is. Living throughout the week, we commit many sins knowingly and unknowingly. If we come into worship without repentance, offering it lightly, it is no different from Oholah and Oholibah bringing their blood-stained hands into God’s sanctuary. This is why we must prepare for worship with a humble heart, arriving not in a rush after the service has begun, but at least 5–10 minutes beforehand, repenting and readying ourselves before God.

두 번째로 정치적인 죄입니다. 오홀라와 오홀리바는 두 부류의 사람들과 정치적 외도를 저질렀습니다. 먼저는 40절에 사절을 보내 먼 곳에서 온 사람들이고 두 번째는 42절에 잡류와 술 취한 사람들입니다. 두 여인은 자신들이 불러온 사람들의 환심을 사기 위해 목욕을 하고, 눈썹을 그리고, 좋은 옷과 장신구로 치장을 했습니다 (40절). 그리고 41절에 이들은 하나님의 향과 기름을 사용해서 상을 차렸습니다. 이러한 행위는 하나님의 성소를 더럽힌 것과 같은 가증한 행위입니다. 이러한 행위를 통해 오홀라와 오힐리바는 마치 창녀가 화대를 지불받듯이 42절 하반절에 팔찌를 손목에 차고 아름다운 관을 받습니다. 하나님은 이들을 “음행으로 쇠한 여인”이라고 가리키시며 그들이 돌이키지 않고 저지르는 끊임없는 음행에 탄식을 지으십니다 (43절).

실제로 하나님께 제사를 드리는 도중에라도 앗수르나 애굽, 바벨론에서 사신이 찾아오면 즉시 그들에게 향응을 베풀며 율법에 어긋나는 정책을 논의했습니다. 하나님의 힘, 능력, 보호하심만으로는 충분하지 않아 정치적으로 이익을 보기위해 세상과 타협했습니다. 이렇게 세상과 하나님 사이에 양다리를 걸치며 하나님이 주신 향과 기름으로 세상을 섬기는 행위는 하나님이 보시기에 가증한 행위인 것입니다.

The second is their political sin. Oholah and Oholibah committed political adultery with two kinds of people: first, envoys sent from distant lands (v.40), and second, the rabble and drunkards mentioned in verse 42. To win the favor of these men, the two women bathed, painted their eyes, and adorned themselves with fine clothing and jewelry (v.40). Verse 41 tells us they even used God’s incense and oil to set their table. Such acts were detestable in God’s sight, defiling His sanctuary. Like prostitutes receiving payment, they were given bracelets for their wrists and crowns for their heads (v.42). God calls them “worn-out adulteresses” and laments their relentless, unrepentant immorality (v.43). Even while offering sacrifices to God, if envoys came from Assyria, Egypt, or Babylon, they immediately entertained them and entered into policies contrary to God’s law. They compromised with the world, relying on political alliances because they felt God’s power, strength, and protection were not enough. To use God’s incense and oil in service to the world was, before the Lord, an abomination.

여러분 근데 한 번 생각해봅시다. 북 이스라엘과 남 유다가 저 시대 강대국 앗수르, 애굽, 바벨론 사이에서 살아남기 위해서 최선을 다한 것 같지 않습니까? 어떻습니까? 애초에 하나님이 이러한 강대국들을 싹 전멸시켜주셨으면 이렇게 살아남기 위해 강대국에게 빌붙을 필요 없었을텐데 하나님이 이들을 마치 창녀로 취급하는게 억울할까요? 아닙니다. 이들의 상황은 마치 현재 세상 속에서 살아가는 우리 그리스도인들과 같습니다. 우리는 비록 현재 이 세상 속에서 살아가지만 세상의 가치와 타협하면서 사는 것이 아닌 하나님을 따라 구별되는 거룩한 삶을 살아야 할 책임이 있습니다. 남 유다 고위 간부들이 “나라를 지키기위해 어쩔 수 없었습니다”라고 변명할 수 없다는 거예요. 우리도 살아가는 동안 수많은 상황 속에서 하나님과 세상 가운데 선택해야 하는 상황들이 놓입니다. “내 가정을 지키기 위해, 내 직장을 지키기 위해, 내 명예를 지키기위해”와 같이 겉으로 봤을 때는 신실하고 열심을 내는 것 같은 일들이 사실은 우리가 하나님을 저버리고 세상과 타협하는 선택들이었다면, 이것이 반복하면 반복할수록 우리의 마음은 점점 어두워지고 오홀라와 오홀리바처럼 돌이킬 수 없는 심판을 받을 것입니다.

But let’s think about it for a moment. Doesn’t it seem like the northern and southern kingdoms were simply doing their best to survive between powerful empires like Assyria, Egypt, and Babylon? Should we feel sorry for them, as though God unfairly called them prostitutes? No. Their situation mirrors ours as Christians living in today’s world. We, too, live in this world, but we are called not to compromise with its values, but to live holy, set-apart lives for God. The leaders of Judah could not excuse themselves by saying, “We had no choice but to protect our nation.” Likewise, we also face countless decisions where we must choose between God and the world. If, for the sake of protecting our family, our career, or our reputation, we continually choose to compromise with the world, then over time our hearts will darken, and like Oholah and Oholibah, we will face irreversible judgment.

근데 이렇게만 보면 희망이 없는 것 같지 않습니까? 사실 우리는 모두 이러한 음행하는 창녀와 같은 삶에서 벗어날 수 없습니다. 죄인이기 때문입니다. 하나님만을 항상 24시간 365일 생각하며 살 수 없고 매번 다른 우상거리들로 마음이 채워집니다. 그래서 결국 45절에서 하나님이 간통한 여인들을 재판하듯이 우리의 죄를 수면 위로 드러내시고 재판하십니다. 이렇게 재판대 앞에 서는 것이 과연 재수 없고 억울한 일일까요? 요한복음 8장에 나오는 예수님 앞으로 음행하다 잡혀온 여자 이야기 기억하시죠? 무슨 사정이 있었는지 간음하다가 잡혀온 여인은 돌로 맞아 죽어야 마땅했지만 예수님은 그렇게 하지 않으셨습니다. 오히려 그녀를 잡아온 자들에게 “너희 중에 죄 없는 자가 먼저 돌로 치라” (요 8:7)고 말씀하셨고, 이 말을 들은 모든 자들은 양심의 가책을 느끼며 그 자리를 떠났습니다. 둘 만 남게되자 예수님께서는 “나도 너를 정죄하지 아니하노니 가서 다시는 죄를 범하지 말라” (요 8:11)라고 말씀하십니다. 예수님께서 그녀에게 죄값을 묻지 않은 것은 절대 그녀의 죄를 용납해주고 계속해서 그러한 삶을 살도록 장려하시는 행동이 아닙니다. 돌에 맞아 죽어도 싼 존재인 그녀가 비록 수치스러울지라도 표면 위로 그녀의 죄를 드러내시어 은혜를 깨닫게 하시고 다시는 죄악의 길에 머물지 않기를 바라시는 마음입니다. 같은 마음으로 희망없는 우리의 인생 가운데 예수님께서 대신하여 죄값을 지불하셨습니다. 이 큰 은혜를 남용하지 않고 우리 주님 앞에 겸손히 주가 주 되심을 선포합시다. 하나님께서 우리의 삶 가운데 음란을 그치게 하기 위해 우리의 잘못을 심판대 위로 올리신다면, 그때 피하지 말고 겸허히 잘못을 인정하는 자세가 필요합니다. 그렇게 회개의 역사가 일어날 때 우리의 삶에는 변화가 있고 성장이 있고 기쁨이 넘쳐날 줄로 믿습니다.

At first glance, this may feel hopeless. In truth, we are all unable to escape this kind of adulterous life, because we are sinners. None of us can think of God alone, 24/7, 365 days a year. Our hearts constantly run to other idols. That is why verse 45 says that God exposes our sins and judges us, just as He judged adulterous women. But is standing before God’s judgment seat merely an unlucky or unfair fate? No. Remember the story in John 8, where the woman caught in adultery was brought before Jesus? She deserved to be stoned to death, but Jesus did not condemn her. Instead, He said to her accusers, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her” (John 8:7). Convicted by their own consciences, they all left. Then, alone with the woman, Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go now and leave your life of sin” (John 8:11). Jesus did not ignore her sin, nor encourage her to keep living that way. Rather, He exposed her sin in the open so that she might encounter grace and be freed from that path. In the same way, though our situation may seem hopeless, Jesus has already paid the price for our sins. Let us not abuse this great grace, but humbly confess before the Lord that He alone is Lord. If God, in order to cleanse our lives of spiritual adultery, exposes our sins to the judgment seat, let us not run from it, but accept it humbly, acknowledging our wrong. When repentance takes place, then transformation, growth, and true joy will fill our lives.
