20:23 또 내가 내 손을 들어 광야에서 그들에게 맹세하기를 내가 그들을 이방인 중에 흩으며 여러 민족 가운데에 헤치리라 하였나니

20:24 이는 그들이 나의 규례를 행하지 아니하며 나의 율례를 멸시하며 내 안식일을 더럽히고 눈으로 그들의 조상들의 우상들을 사모함이며

20:25 또 내가 그들에게 선하지 못한 율례와 능히 지키지 못할 규례를 주었고

20:26 그들이 장자를 다 화제로 드리는 그 예물로 내가 그들을 더럽혔음은 그들을 멸망하게 하여 나를 여호와인 줄 알게 하려 하였음이라

23 Also with uplifted hand I swore to them in the wilderness that I would disperse them among the nations and scatter them through the countries, 24 because they had not obeyed my laws but had rejected my decrees and desecrated my Sabbaths, and their eyes lusted after their parents’ idols. 25 So I gave them other statutes that were not good and laws through which they could not live; 26 I defiled them through their gifts—the sacrifice of every firstborn—that I might fill them with horror so they would know that I am the Lord.’

20:27 그런즉 인자야 이스라엘 족속에게 말하여 이르라 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 너희 조상들이 또 내게 범죄하여 나를 욕되게 하였느니라

20:28 내가 내 손을 들어 그들에게 주기로 맹세한 땅으로 그들을 인도하여 들였더니 그들이 모든 높은 산과 모든 무성한 나무를 보고 거기에서 제사를 드리고 분노하게 하는 제물을 올리며 거기서 또 분향하고 전제물을 부어 드린지라

20:29 이에 내가 그들에게 이르기를 너희가 다니는 산당이 무엇이냐 하였노라 (그것을 오늘날까지 바마라 일컫느니라)

27 “Therefore, son of man, speak to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: In this also your ancestors blasphemed me by being unfaithful to me: 28 When I brought them into the land I had sworn to give them and they saw any high hill or any leafy tree, there they offered their sacrifices, made offerings that aroused my anger, presented their fragrant incense and poured out their drink offerings. 29 Then I said to them: What is this high place you go to?’” (It is called Bamah to this day.)

Rebellious Israel Renewed

30 “Therefore say to the Israelites: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Will you defile yourselves the way your ancestors did and lust after their vile images? 31 When you offer your gifts—the sacrifice of your children in the fire—you continue to defile yourselves with all your idols to this day. Am I to let you inquire of me, you Israelites? As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will not let you inquire of me.

20:32 너희가 스스로 이르기를 우리가 이방인 곧 여러 나라 족속 같이 되어서 목석을 경배하리라 하거니와 너희 마음에 품은 것을 결코 이루지 못하리라

32 “‘You say, “We want to be like the nations, like the peoples of the world, who serve wood and stone.” But what you have in mind will never happen.

유다 왕중에서 악한 왕의 대명사가 유다 14대 왕으로 55년간 유다를 통치한 므낫세 왕입니다. 그의 악한 행적은 역사서들에 잘 기록되어 있습니다. 대표적인 악행은 선대가 이뤄 놓은 종교개혁을 다시 원점으로 돌려버린 것입니다.

그는 이방의 악한 풍습을 따르고, 이방 신들을 위한 제단을 성전에 쌓았고, 바알과 아세라 숭배는 물론 일월성신 숭배, 신접한 자, 박수 무당, 점쟁이들을 불러 들였습니다. 그 외에 가장 큰 죄악은 그의 아버지가 헐어버린 산당을 다시 세우고, 심지어 자신의 아들들을 불로 자나게 하는 인신제사를 드린 것입니다.

인신제사는 이미 가나안에 들어 오기도 전에 하나님이 모세를 통해서 경고했던 죄악입니다.

너는 결단코 자녀를 몰렉에게 주어 불로 통과하게 함으로

네 하나님의 이름을 욕되게 하지 말라 나는 여호와이니라 (레 18:21)

하지만 므낫세는 정말 열심히도 하나님의 말씀과는 정반대되는 결정과 행동을 취했습니다. 유다 왕국이 하나님의 진노를 받을 수밖에 없는 이유를 알 것 같습니다. 그런데 놀라운 것은 므낫세의 아버지가 유다의 가장 선하고 위대한 왕 중 한 명인 히스기야라는 사실입니다. 그리고 므낫세가 히스기야가 죽을 병에서 치유 받고 생명을 15년 연장 받은 그 때 태어난 존재라는 사실도 많은 생각을 하게 합니다.

한가지 더, 므낫세는 결국 앗수르의 포로로 잡혀가지만 그곳에서 회개하고 하나님을 만나고서는 다시 예루살렘으로 돌아와 왕직에 앉게 되는 놀라운 일을 체험합니다(대하 33:10~13). 역대기 저자는 므낫세가 그제서야 여호와가 참 하나님을 알았다고 기록합니다. 참으로 하나님의 역사 하심은 알 길이 없습니다.

Among the kings of Judah, the archetype of an evil king is Manasseh, who ruled Judah for 55 years as the 14th king. His wicked deeds are well documented in the historical books. One of his most notorious acts was undoing the religious reforms established by his predecessor.

He adopted the evil practices of foreign nations, built altars in the temple for foreign gods, and promoted the worship of Baal and Asherah, as well as the sun, moon, and stars. He summoned mediums, spiritists, and fortune-tellers. Perhaps his greatest sin was rebuilding the high places that his father had destroyed, and even offering his own children as burnt sacrifices.

Human sacrifice was a sin that God had already warned against through Moses, even before the Israelites entered Canaan:

Yet Manasseh zealously pursued decisions and actions that were completely contrary to God’s word. It becomes clear why the kingdom of Judah had to face God’s wrath. What is striking, however, is that Manasseh’s father was Hezekiah, one of the most righteous and greatest kings of Judah. Furthermore, Manasseh was born at the very time God had healed Hezekiah from a life-threatening illness and extended his life by fifteen years—a fact that invites much reflection.

One more remarkable point: Manasseh was eventually taken captive by Assyria, yet there he repented, encountered God, and returned to Jerusalem to reclaim the throne (2 Chronicles 33:10–13). The Chronicler notes that only then did Manasseh truly know the Lord as the living God. Truly, the workings of God are beyond our understanding.

출애굽 2세대의 죄악 (23~26절)

하나님은 이스라엘 백성에게 가나안 땅에 들어가자마자 그리심 산에서 축복을 에발 산에서 저주를 선포하라고 명령하셨습니다(신 27:11~15). 그 뒤에 이어지는 내용은 축복과 저주에 관한 하나님의 약속들입니다. 만일 그들이 하나님의 말씀을 지키지 않을 경우에는 모든 민족 가운데 흩을 것이라는 저주도 있었습니다(신 28:64).

걱정했던대로 이스라엘은 하나님의 규례를 지키지 않고, 안식일도 지키지 않았습니다. 심지어 몰렉에게 자신들의 장자를 바치는 어처구니 없는 행동도 서슴지 않았습니다. 몰렉은 고대 근동 암몬 자손의 신으로 밀곰, 몰록이라고도 불렸습니다. 그들의 특징은 자녀를 희생제물로 하여 우상숭배를 했던 것입니다.

광야 시절에 몰렉을 섬겼다는 구약의 기록은 찾아볼 수 없지만, 사도행전(7:43)을 보면 이스라엘이 광야에서도 이미 몰렉을 섬기는 시도를 한 흔적을 볼 수 있습니다.

하나님은 그들에게 살 수 있는 율법, 생명의 법을 주셨지만 그들은 말씀에 순종하지 않았습니다. 그러므로 그 생명의 율법은 그들에게 결코 선하지 못한 심판의 율법, 죽음의 율법이 되었습니다. 하나님은 그들을 몰렉에게 인신제사를 드리는 죄악 가운데 내버려 둠으로 그들을 심판 하십니다. 가장 무서운 형벌은 우리를 죄악 가운데 내버려 두시는 것입니다. 이것이 가장 두려운 형벌인 것은 내버려 둠의 그 결과가 반드시 멸망이기 때문입니다.    

특히 장자를 화제로 드려 우상숭배를 하는 죄악이 가장 큰 죄악인 이유는 도덕적으로도 문제이지만,

이것이 영적으로 더욱 큰 죄악이기 때문입니다. 본래 이스라엘의 장자는 애굽에서 바로의 장자와 함께 죽어야 했습니다. 그런데 하나님께서 당신의 장자인 예수 그리스도를 대신 죽으심으로 그들의 장자를 구원 하셨습니다. 물론 이것은 1500여년 후에 벌어질 미래의 사건입니다. 하지만 하나님 안에서는 과거와 현재, 미래는 의미가 없습니다. 모두 한 순간에 벌어지는 일입니다. 유월절 어린양이 상징하는 바가 예수입니다.

그런데 이스라엘은 하나님의 이러한 속죄를 아무 가치 없게 만들어 버린 것입니다. 택하신 백성 이스라엘의 장자들(뿐 어니라 모든 자녀들)을 구원하시려고 유월절을 만드신 것인데, 이스라엘은 몰렉에게 장자를 바침으로 유월절의 희생, 곧 예수의 구속을 도루묵으로 만들어 버린 것입니다. 한심한 노릇입니다.

The Sin of the Second Generation of Israel (Exodus 2:23–26)

God commanded the Israelites that as soon as they entered the land of Canaan, they were to proclaim blessings on Mount Gerizim and curses on Mount Ebal (Deuteronomy 27:11–15). What follows are God’s promises regarding blessings and curses. If the people failed to obey God’s word, they would be scattered among all the nations (Deuteronomy 28:64).

As feared, Israel did not follow God’s statutes. They did not even keep the Sabbath, and they went so far as to offer their firstborn to Molek—an utterly outrageous act. Molek was a god of the Ammonites in the ancient Near East, also called Milcom or Moloch, and their defining characteristic was offering their children as sacrifices in idol worship.

Although there is no record in the Old Testament that the Israelites served Molek during the wilderness period, Acts 7:43 indicates that Israel had already attempted to serve Molek even in the desert.

God gave them the law—the law of life—so that they could live, yet they did not obey. Consequently, the law of life became, for them, a law of judgment, a law of death. God judged them by leaving them to the sin of offering children to Molek. The most terrifying punishment is being left in one’s sin. This is the most dreadful because the inevitable result of being left in sin is destruction.

The sin of offering one’s firstborn as a burnt sacrifice to idols is particularly heinous—not only morally, but even more so spiritually. Originally, the firstborn of Israel were meant to die along with Pharaoh’s firstborn in Egypt. Yet God, through the death of His own firstborn, Jesus Christ, would save Israel’s firstborn. Of course, this would not happen for another 1,500 years, but for God, past, present, and future have no separation; all things are seen in one eternal moment. The Passover lamb foreshadows Jesus.

However, Israel rendered this atonement meaningless. God instituted the Passover to save the firstborn of His chosen people, Israel—all their children—but Israel nullified this sacrifice by offering their firstborn to Molek. In effect, they made the sacrifice of the Passover, and the redemption it prefigured in Christ, utterly void. It is truly a pathetic and tragic act.

가나안 세대의 죄악과 포로 세대의 죄악 (27~32절)

이러한 이스라엘의 죄악은 가나안 세대에 와서는 더욱 심화 됩니다. 그들은 조상들과 같이 동일한 범죄를 할 뿐 아니라, 산당을 만들어 그곳에서 각종 다양한 우상을 섬기는 짓을 했습니다. 그래서 하나님은 그들이 다니는 산당을 바마, 곧 너희의 다니는 곳이 도대체 뭐냐? 라고 물으신 것입니다. 가나안 세대는 조상들의 모든 죄에다가 몰렉에게 자녀를 인신 제사하는 것과 거기에 산당의 죄악까지 더한 것입니다.

이제 마지막으로 하나님은 포로 세대들의 죄악을 지적하십니다. 이 죄는 왕정 시대에 벌어진 죄악들입니다. 조상들과 동일하게 그들은 조상들의 풍속을 따랐고, 그 모든 가증한 행위를 다랐습니다(30).

또 그들은 아들을 화제로 삼아 불 가운데 지나게 하였습니다. 또한 스스로 우상으로 더럽힙니다(31a).

문제는 그들이 포로로 잡혀온 와중에도 여전히 그 죄악을 떠나지 않았다는 것입니다. 그러므로 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들에게 묻습니다. 너희가, 나 하나님이라면 너희가 궁금해 하는 것에 대해서 묻는 것을 용납하겠는가? 하나님은 다시 한번 확고하게 말씀 하십니다. 하나님은 당신의 삶을 두고 맹세하면서 절대로 내게 묻기를 용납하지 않을 것이라 말씀하십니다.

이방 족속들과 같이 목석을 섬기려면 섬겨라, 하지만 너희 마음에 있는 소원은 이룰 수 없을 것이다(32)가 하나님의 답변입니다. 너희 하고 싶은대로 해라, 하지만 나는 상관하지 않을 것이다.

The Sin of the Canaanite Generation and the Sin of the Exile Generation (Exodus 27–32)

The sins of Israel intensified in the generation that entered Canaan. Not only did they repeat the same crimes as their ancestors, but they also built high places and worshiped a variety of idols there. God questioned them: “These high places you frequent—what are they for?” The Canaanite generation compounded all the sins of their forefathers with the atrocity of offering their children to Molek and the additional sin of erecting high places.

Finally, God points out the sins of the exile generation—sins committed during the monarchy. Like their ancestors, they followed the customs of their forefathers and carried out all the detestable practices (v.30). They even made their sons pass through fire as a burnt offering, and they defiled themselves through idol worship (v.31a).

The problem was that even in captivity, they did not abandon these sins. Therefore, God asks the Israelites: “If I am your God, would you dare question Me about what you desire?” Once again, God firmly declares that He will never permit them to question Him while they take oaths regarding their own lives.

God’s answer is clear: “If you want to serve wood and stone like the nations around you, go ahead, but you will never achieve the desires of your heart” (v.32). In other words: do as you please, but I will not intervene.

부모님이 자녀의 잘못된 행동을 야단치는 것은 그래도 관심과 사랑이 있다는 표현입니다. 그런데 진짜로 관심과 사랑이 사라지면 더이상 상관하지 않습니다. 네 마음대로 해봐라 입니다. 이것만큼 무서운 일은 없습니다.

만일 내가 아주 사소한 죄를 지었는데, 즉각적인 하나님의 메시지가 온다면 할렐루야를 외쳐야 합니다. 나는 진정한 하나님의 자녀입니다. 그런데 많은 죄를 범해도 전혀 하나님의 어떠한 메시지도 없다면, 그 때는 심각하게 고민해야 합니다.

나의 자그마한 일에도 관여하시고 상관하시는 하나님이 좋습니다. 날마다 매순간마다 하나님을 의식하고 하나님과 대화하며 아버지의 뜻을 구하는 진정한 자녀가 되기를 바랍니다.

When parents correct their children for wrongdoing, it shows that they still care and love them. But when real concern and love vanish, they stop intervening. “Do as you wish”—nothing is more terrifying than that.

If even a small sin provokes an immediate response from God, we should shout hallelujah: we are truly God’s children. But if we commit many sins and receive no message from God, then it is time to seriously reflect.

How blessed it is to have a God who is concerned even with the smallest of our actions. May we become true children who are conscious of God every moment, conversing with Him daily, and seeking the will of our Father.
