16:1 또 여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하여 이르시되

16:2 인자야 예루살렘으로 그 가증한 일을 알게 하여

16:3 이르기를 주 여호와께서 예루살렘에 관하여 이같이 말씀하시되 네 근본과 난 땅은 가나안이요 네 아버지는 아모리 사람이요 네 어머니는 헷 사람이라

16:4 네가 난 것을 말하건대 네가 날 때에 네 배꼽 줄을 자르지 아니 하였고 너를 물로 씻어 정결하게 하지 아니하였고 네게 소금을 뿌리지 아니하였고 너를 강보로 싸지도 아니하였나니

16:5 아무도 너를 돌보아 이 중에 한 가지라도 네게 행하여 너를 불쌍히 여긴 자가 없었으므로 네가 나던 날에 네 몸이 천하게 여겨져 네가 들에 버려졌느니라

1 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, confront Jerusalem with her detestable practices 3 and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says to Jerusalem: Your ancestry and birth were in the land of the Canaanites; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite. 4 On the day you were born your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to make you clean, nor were you rubbed with salt or wrapped in cloths. 5 No one looked on you with pity or had compassion enough to do any of these things for you. Rather, you were thrown out into the open field, for on the day you were born you were despised.

16:6 내가 네 곁으로 지나갈 때에 네가 피투성이가 되어 발짓하는 것을 보고 네게 이르기를 너는 피투성이라도 살아 있으라 다시 이르기를 너는 피투성이라도 살아 있으라 하고

16:7 내가 너를 들의 풀 같이 많게 하였더니 네가 크게 자라고 심히 아름다우며 유방이 뚜렷하고 네 머리털이 자랐으나 네가 여전히 벌거벗은 알몸이더라

6 “‘Then I passed by and saw you kicking about in your blood, and as you lay there in your blood I said to you, “Live!” 7 I made you grow like a plant of the field. You grew and developed and entered puberty. Your breasts had formed and your hair had grown, yet you were stark naked.

16:8 내가 네 곁으로 지나며 보니 네 때가 사랑을 할 만한 때라 내 옷으로 너를 덮어 벌거벗은 것을 가리고 네게 맹세하고 언약하여 너를 내게 속하게 하였느니라 나 주 여호와의 말이니라

8 “‘Later I passed by, and when I looked at you and saw that you were old enough for love, I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your naked body. I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Sovereign Lord, and you became mine.

16:9 내가 물로 네 피를 씻어 없애고 네게 기름을 바르고

16:10 수 놓은 옷을 입히고 물돼지 가죽신을 신기고 가는 베로 두르고 모시로 덧입히고

16:11 패물을 채우고 팔고리를 손목에 끼우고 목걸이를 목에 걸고

16:12 코고리를 코에 달고 귀고리를 귀에 달고 화려한 왕관을 머리에 씌웠나니

16:13 이와 같이 네가 금, 은으로 장식하고 가는 베와 모시와 수놓은 것을 입으며 또 고운 밀가루와 꿀과 기름을 먹음으로 극히 곱고 형통하여 왕후의 지위에 올랐느니라

16:14 네 화려함으로 말미암아 네 명성이 이방인 중에 퍼졌음은 내가 네게 입힌 영화로 네 화려함이 온전함이라 나 주 여호와의 말이니라

9 “‘I bathed you with water and washed the blood from you and put ointments on you. 10 I clothed you with an embroidered dress and put sandals of fine leather on you. I dressed you in fine linen and covered you with costly garments. 11 I adorned you with jewelry: I put bracelets on your arms and a necklace around your neck, 12 and I put a ring on your nose, earrings on your ears and a beautiful crown on your head. 13 So you were adorned with gold and silver; your clothes were of fine linen and costly fabric and embroidered cloth. Your food was honey, olive oil and the finest flour. You became very beautiful and rose to be a queen. 14 And your fame spread among the nations on account of your beauty, because the splendor I had given you made your beauty perfect, declares the Sovereign Lord.

16:15 그러나 네가 네 화려함을 믿고 네 명성을 가지고 행음하되 지나가는 모든 자와 더불어 음란을 많이 행하므로 네 몸이 그들의 것이 되도다

16:16 네가 네 의복을 가지고 너를 위하여 각색으로 산당을 꾸미고 거기에서 행음하였나니 이런 일은 전무후무하니라

16:17 네가 또 내가 준 금, 은 장식품으로 너를 위하여 남자 우상을 만들어 행음하며

16:18 또 네 수놓은 옷을 그 우상에게 입히고 나의 기름과 향을 그 앞에 베풀며

16:19 또 내가 네게 주어 먹게 한 내 음식물 곧 고운 밀가루와 기름과 꿀을 네가 그 앞에 베풀어 향기를 삼았나니 과연 그렇게 하였느니라 주 여호와의 말씀이니라

15 “‘But you trusted in your beauty and used your fame to become a prostitute. You lavished your favors on anyone who passed by and your beauty became his. 16 You took some of your garments to make gaudy high places, where you carried on your prostitution. You went to him, and he possessed your beauty. 17 You also took the fine jewelry I gave you, the jewelry made of my gold and silver, and you made for yourself male idols and engaged in prostitution with them. 18 And you took your embroidered clothes to put on them, and you offered my oil and incense before them. 19 Also the food I provided for you—the flour, olive oil and honey I gave you to eat—you offered as fragrant incense before them. That is what happened, declares the Sovereign Lord.

16:20 또 네가 나를 위하여 낳은 네 자녀를 그들에게 데리고 가서 드려 제물로 삼아 불살랐느니라 네가 네 음행을 작은 일로 여겨서

16:21 나의 자녀들을 죽여 우상에게 넘겨 불 가운데로 지나가게 하였느냐

16:22 네가 어렸을 때에 벌거벗은 몸이었으며 피투성이가 되어서 발짓하던 것을 기억하지 아니하고 네가 모든 가증한 일과 음란을 행하였느니라

20 “‘And you took your sons and daughters whom you bore to me and sacrificed them as food to the idols. Was your prostitution not enough? 21 You slaughtered my children and sacrificed them to the idols. 22 In all your detestable practices and your prostitution you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, kicking about in your blood.

16:23 주 여호와의 말씀이니라 너는 화 있을진저 화 있을진저 네가 모든 악을 행한 후에

16:24 너를 위하여 누각을 건축하며 모든 거리에 높은 대를 쌓았도다

16:25 네가 높은 대를 모든 길 어귀에 쌓고 네 아름다움을 가증하게 하여 모든 지나가는 자에게 다리를 벌려 심히 음행하고

16:26 하체가 큰 네 이웃 나라 애굽 사람과도 음행하되 심히 음란히 하여 내 진노를 샀도다

16:27 그러므로 내가 내 손을 네 위에 펴서 네 일용할 양식을 감하고 너를 미워하는 블레셋 여자 곧 네 더러운 행실을 부끄러워하는 자에게 너를 넘겨 임의로 하게 하였거늘

16:28 네가 음욕이 차지 아니하여 또 앗수르 사람과 행음하고 그들과 행음하고도 아직도 부족하게 여겨

16:29 장사하는 땅 갈대아에까지 심히 행음하되 아직도 족한 줄을 알지 못하였느니라

23 “‘Woe! Woe to you, declares the Sovereign Lord. In addition to all your other wickedness, 24 you built a mound for yourself and made a lofty shrine in every public square. 25 At every street corner you built your lofty shrines and degraded your beauty, spreading your legs with increasing promiscuity to anyone who passed by. 26 You engaged in prostitution with the Egyptians, your neighbors with large genitals, and aroused my anger with your increasing promiscuity. 27 So I stretched out my hand against you and reduced your territory; I gave you over to the greed of your enemies, the daughters of the Philistines, who were shocked by your lewd conduct. 28 You engaged in prostitution with the Assyrians too, because you were insatiable; and even after that, you still were not satisfied. 29 Then you increased your promiscuity to include Babylonia, a land of merchants, but even with this you were not satisfied.

16:30 주 여호와의 말씀이니라 네가 이 모든 일을 행하니 이는 방자한 음녀의 행위라 네 마음이 어찌 그리 약한지

16:31 네가 누각을 모든 길 어귀에 건축하며 높은 대를 모든 거리에 쌓고도 값을 싫어하니 창기 같지도 아니하도다

30 “‘I am filled with fury against you, declares the Sovereign Lord, when you do all these things, acting like a brazen prostitute! 31 When you built your mounds at every street corner and made your lofty shrines in every public square, you were unlike a prostitute, because you scorned payment.

16:32 그 남편 대신에 다른 남자들과 내통하여 간음하는 아내로다

16:33 사람들은 모든 창기에게 선물을 주거늘 오직 너는 네 모든 정든 자에게 선물을 주며 값을 주어서 사방에서 와서 너와 행음하게 하니

16:34 네 음란함이 다른 여인과 같지 아니함은 행음하려고 너를 따르는 자가 없음이며 또 네가 값을 받지 아니하고 도리어 값을 줌이라 그런즉 다른 여인과 같지 아니하니라

32 “‘You adulterous wife! You prefer strangers to your own husband! 33 All prostitutes receive gifts, but you give gifts to all your lovers, bribing them to come to you from everywhere for your illicit favors. 34 So in your prostitution you are the opposite of others; no one runs after you for your favors. You are the very opposite, for you give payment and none is given to you.

마태복음을 보면 다음과 같은 이야기가 등장합니다.

이른 아침에 성으로 들어오실 때에 시장하신지라 길 가에서 한 무화과나무를 보시고 그리로 가사 잎사귀 밖에 아무 것도 찾지 못하시고 나무에게 이르시되 이제부터 영원토록 네가 열매를 맺지 못하리라 하시니 무화과나무가 곧 마른지라 제자들이 보고 이상히 여겨 이르되 무화과나무가 어찌하여 곧 말랐나이까

(마 21:18~20)

하지만 마가는 이 사건이 한 순간에 이뤄진 것이 아니라는 것을 보도합니다. 예수님이 마지막 예루살렘에 입성하신 다음날 베다니에서 주무시고 다시 예루살렘으로 들어오시는 길에 허기를 느끼시고 잎이 무성한 무화과 나무를 찾아 열매를 찾으려 합니다. 하지만 그 나무는 잎만 무성하고 열매가 없었습니다. 그러자 예수님은 무화과 나무에게 다시는 사람들이 네게서 열매를 먹지 못할 것이라고 저주하십니다.

그리고 다음날 베다니에서 다시 예루살렘으로 들어가는 중에 베드로가 말라버린 무화과 나무를 발견하고 예수님께 묻자 예수님은 무엇이든지 믿음대로 된다고 가르칩시니다. 이 사건에서 중요한 것은 잎만 무성한 무화과 나무가 상징하는 바입니다. 그것은 타락할 대로 타락하여 만민이 기도하는 집인 성전을 장사꾼의 소굴로 만들어 버린 이스라엘, 곧 예루살렘과 그 운명에 대한 예고였던 것입니다. 

In the Gospel of Matthew, we find the following account:

However, Mark reports that this event did not happen all at once. The day after Jesus made His final entry into Jerusalem, He stayed overnight in Bethany. The next morning, on His way back to Jerusalem, He became hungry and went to a leafy fig tree looking for fruit. But the tree had only leaves and no fruit. Then Jesus cursed the tree, saying that no one would ever eat fruit from it again.

The following day, as they were once more traveling from Bethany to Jerusalem, Peter noticed the withered fig tree and asked Jesus about it. Jesus taught them that whatever they asked for in faith would be done.

The key point in this event is the symbolism of the leafy but fruitless fig tree. It represented Israel—specifically Jerusalem—that had become utterly corrupt, turning the temple, which was meant to be a house of prayer for all nations, into a den of merchants. It was a foreshadowing of its coming judgment.

포도원의 비유(15:1~8)

이처럼 성경은 예루살렘이나 이스라엘에 대하여 자주 비유를 통해서 설명합니다.

에스겔은 15장과 16장에서 연속적으로 두 가지 비유를 들어 이스라엘의 운명에 대해서 예언합니다.

포도원 또는 포도나무 역시 자주 이스라엘이나 예루살렘의 비유로 등장하는 단골 메뉴입니다. 포도나무를 보신 분들은 다 알 것입니다. 포도나무는 마치 덩굴처럼 굽이굽이 휘어져 있습니다. 나무가 두껍지도 않습니다. 그래서 포도나무는 사실 목재로서는 전혀 가치가 없습니다(3). 그저 땔감으로 사용될 뿐입니다(4).

평소에도 목재로서 전혀 가치가 없는 포도나무가 만일 불에 태워졌다면, 그후에는 더욱 가치가 없습니다(5).

하나님은 에스겔 선지자를 통해서 이스라엘의 형편이 열매 없는 포도나무와 같음을 말씀 하십니다. 이제 하나님은 유다 백성들, 곧 예루살렘 주민을 불에 던질 땔감이 되게 하실 것이라 선포합니다(6). 하나님이 직접 그들을 대적하시니, 그들을 구원할 존재는 없습니다. 그때야 비로소 이스라엘은 여호와의 하나님 되심을 인정할 것입니다(7). 그들이 그렇게 된 것은 그들의 버범함 때문입니다(8).  

그렇다면 우리는 질문해봐야 합니다. 포도나무가 포도나무로서 가장 가치가 있으려면 무엇을 해야 할까?

그것은 너무도 자명합니다. 열매를 맺는 것입니다. 열매 있는 포도나무는 나무 중에 최고의 나무입니다.

왜냐하면 인간을 즐겁게하는 포도 과일과 그로 인한 포도주까지 만들수 있기 때문입니다. 하지만 열매를 맺지 못하는 포도나무는 아무 짝에도 쓸모가 없는 것입니다.

예루살렘, 곧 이스라엘은 포도나무와 같은 존재입니다. 아미 사실은 모든 인간이 포도나무와 같은 존재입니다. 인간이 가장 인간다울 때는 하나님이 원하시는 열매를 맺을 때입니다. 양치기 개 보더 콜리는 목자의 명령에 따라 넓은 들을 미친 듯이 달립니다. 그리고 순식간에 수 많은 양들을 우리로 몰아 넣습니다. 그리고는 세상에서 가장 행복한 표정으로 주인을 바라봅니다. 양치는 것이 그의 존재 목적인 것입니다.

그렇다면 우리가 맺어야 할 열매는 무엇일까요? 인간은 무엇을 위해 존재할까요? 바로 하나님이 원하는 열매를 맺기 위해 존재합니다. 그렇다면 하나님의 원하는 열매는 무엇입니까? 하나님을 찬양하고, 예배하는 것(사 43:21), 곧 하나님과 깊이 교제하는 것과 성령의 열매를 맺는 것(갈 5:22), 그리고 이 기쁜 소식을 땅 끝까지 전하는 것입니다(행 1:8). 그렇게 할 때 우리 역시 진정한 기쁨을 알게 됩니다.

The Parable of the Vineyard (Ezekiel 15:1–8)

In this way, the Bible often explains matters concerning Jerusalem or Israel through parables.

In chapters 15 and 16, Ezekiel gives two consecutive parables prophesying the fate of Israel.

The vineyard or vine is one of the most frequently used metaphors for Israel or Jerusalem—it’s a regular theme. Anyone who has seen a grapevine knows: it twists and winds like a vine, and its trunk is not thick. Therefore, as wood, a grapevine has no real value (v.3). It is only good for use as firewood (v.4).

If a grapevine, which already has no value as wood, is burned in the fire, it becomes even more useless afterward (v.5).

Through the prophet Ezekiel, God declares that Israel’s condition is like that of a fruitless vine. Now God will make the people of Judah—the residents of Jerusalem—like fuel for the fire (v.6). Since God Himself is against them, there will be no one to save them. Only then will Israel acknowledge that the Lord is God (v.7). And this will happen because of their unfaithfulness (v.8).

So we must ask: What must a vine do to be most valuable as a vine?

The answer is obvious: it must bear fruit. A fruitful vine is the best of all trees, because it produces grapes that delight people and can also be turned into wine. But a vine that bears no fruit is completely useless.

Jerusalem—indeed, Israel—is like a vine. In fact, every human being is like a vine. Humans are most truly themselves when they bear the fruit God desires. A sheepdog, like a Border Collie, runs wildly across open fields at the shepherd’s command, quickly herding countless sheep into the pen. Then it looks at its master with the happiest expression in the world. Herding is its very purpose for existence.

So, what fruit must we bear? Why do we exist? We exist to bear the fruit that God desires. And what is that fruit? To praise and worship God (Isaiah 43:21), to have deep fellowship with Him and to bear the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22), and to spread this good news to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). When we do this, we too will know true joy.

음녀의 비유 (16:1~34)

하나님은 에스겔 선지자에게 또 다른 비유로 말씀하십니다. 그것은 한 여자아기의 일생에 관한 것입니다. 누구도 돌보지 않는 핏덩이로 태어난 여자 아이를 하나님께서 거두시고 돌보시어 아름다운 여성이 되게 하셨습니다. 그리고는 왕비로 맞이하여 온갖 귀금속과 아름다운 옷으로 치장시켰습니다. 이제 그녀는 온 세상이 부러워하는 존재가 되었습니다(1~14).

이것은 이스라엘 국가의 태동에서 가장 황금기였던 다윗-솔로몬 시대를 비유한 것입니다. 하나님이 보잘 것 없는 민족이었던 히브리인들을 세계의 중심으로 만들어 주셨다면, 그 은혜를 기억하며 하나님을 더욱 사랑하고 섬겨야 할텐데… 오히려 그들은 주변의 강대국들과 조약을 맺으며 그들의 우상들까지 들여와 영적인 간음을하게 된 것입니다. 심지어 그들은 이방인들의 풍습대로 자신의 자녀까지 제물로 불살라 제사하는 악행을 저질렀습니다. 아하스 왕(왕하 16:3)과 므낫세 왕(왕하 21:6)이 대표적인 예입니다.

에스겔은 이러한 이스라엘의 행위를 음란하게 다른 남성들과 잠자리를 하는 음녀에 비유합니다. 그들은 하나님이 주신 축복의 것들을 가지고, 오히려 우상들에게 가져다 바치는 역겨운 짓을 했습니다. 마치 남편이 선물한 귀금속을 내연남에데 가져다 주는 것과 같은 역겨운 행위인 것입니다.  

특히 이들의 음행은 다른 족속들과 다릅니다. 누군가가 꼬셔서 음행을 하는 것이 아니라, 스스로 선택하여 음행을 저지르고, 음행의 댓가를 받는 것이 아니라 오히려 은행을 댓가를 준다는 것이 특이점입니다. 남편인 하나님의 속을 뒤집어 놓는 것입니다.

이스라엘이 이렇게 되는 이유를 오늘 본문에서 발견하자면 다음 구절에서 볼 수있습니다.

네가 어렸을 때에 벌거벗은 몸이었으며 피투성이가 되어서 발짓하던 것을 기억하지 아니하고

네가 모든 가증한 일과 음란을 행하였느니라(22)

The Parable of the Prostitute (Ezekiel 16:1–34)

God spoke to the prophet Ezekiel with another parable—this time, the story of a woman’s life.

A baby girl was born, unwanted and abandoned, still covered in blood. God took her in, cared for her, and raised her into a beautiful woman. He then made her His queen, adorning her with precious jewels and fine clothing. She became someone the whole world envied (vv.1–14).

This is a parable of the golden age of Israel in the time of David and Solomon. God had taken the Hebrews—once an insignificant people—and made them the center of the world. In response, they should have remembered His grace, loved Him more, and served Him faithfully. But instead, they made treaties with surrounding superpowers, bringing in their idols and committing spiritual adultery. They even adopted the customs of the nations and burned their own children as sacrifices. King Ahaz (2 Kings 16:3) and King Manasseh (2 Kings 21:6) are representative examples.

Ezekiel compares such acts of Israel to a prostitute who sleeps with other men. They took the very blessings that God had given them and presented them to idols—a revolting act, like a wife taking jewelry her husband gave her and giving it to her lover.

What’s more, Israel’s unfaithfulness was unlike that of other nations. They were not seduced into sin; they chose it for themselves. And instead of receiving payment for their prostitution, they actually paid others to commit it with them. In this way, they turned the heart of their husband, God, upside down with grief and anger.

The reason for Israel’s downfall, as we see in this passage, can be found in the following verse…

자신의 과거의 형편과 거기에서 구원하신 하나님의 은혜를 기억하지 않았기 때문입니다. 신앙은 은혜를 기억하는 것입니다. 내가 누리고 있는 모든 것이 하나님으로부터 왔음을 기억하고, 그것을 하나님께도 돌려드리는 것이 예배요, 찬양이요, 믿음이요, 신앙생활인 것입니다.

현숙한 여인과 음녀의 차이는 단 한가지입니다. 남편이신 하나님의 은혜를 기억하는가? 그렇지 않은가?

오늘 이 새벽에 조용히 눈을 감고 깊이 묵상해 봅시다. 그동안 하나님이 나와 우리 가정, 자녀들에게 베풀어주신 은혜가 무엇인지… 그 은혜를 기억하는 자가 예수 그리스도의 현숙한 신부인 것입니다.   

It was because they did not remember their past condition or the grace of God who had saved them from it. Faith is remembering grace. To remember that everything I enjoy comes from God, and to return it to Him—that is worship, praise, faith, and the life of a believer.

The difference between a virtuous woman and a prostitute comes down to just one thing: Does she remember the grace of her husband, God, or not?

This morning, let us quietly close our eyes and meditate deeply. What grace has God poured out upon me, my family, and my children? The one who remembers that grace is the pure and faithful bride of Jesus Christ.
