10:9 내가 보니 그룹들 곁에 네 바퀴가 있는데 이 그룹 곁에도 한 바퀴가 있고 저 그룹 곁에도 한 바퀴가 있으며 그 바퀴 모양은 황옥 같으며

10:10 그 모양은 넷이 꼭 같은데 마치 바퀴 안에 바퀴가 있는 것 같으며

10:11 그룹들이 나아갈 때에는 사방으로 몸을 돌리지 아니하고 나아가되 몸을 돌리지 아니하고 그 머리 향한 곳으로 나아가며

10:12 그 온 몸과 등과 손과 날개와 바퀴 곧 네 그룹의 바퀴의 둘레에 다 눈이 가득하더라

10:13 내가 들으니 그 바퀴들을 도는 것이라 부르며

10:14 그룹들에게는 각기 네 면이 있는데 첫째 면은 그룹의 얼굴이요 둘째 면은 사람의 얼굴이요 셋째는 사자의 얼굴이요 넷째는 독수리의 얼굴이더라

9 I looked, and I saw beside the cherubim four wheels, one beside each of the cherubim; the wheels sparkled like topaz. 10 As for their appearance, the four of them looked alike; each was like a wheel intersecting a wheel. 11 As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the cherubim faced; the wheels did not turn about as the cherubim went. The cherubim went in whatever direction the head faced, without turning as they went. 12 Their entire bodies, including their backs, their hands and their wings, were completely full of eyes, as were their four wheels. 13 I heard the wheels being called “the whirling wheels.” 14 Each of the cherubim had four faces: One face was that of a cherub, the second the face of a human being, the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.

10:15 그룹들이 올라가니 그들은 내가 그발 강가에서 보던 생물이라

10:16 그룹들이 나아갈 때에는 바퀴도 그 곁에서 나아가고 그룹들이 날개를 들고 땅에서 올라가려 할 때에도 바퀴가 그 곁을 떠나지 아니하며

10:17 그들이 서면 이들도 서고 그들이 올라가면 이들도 함께 올라가니 이는 생물의 영이 바퀴 가운데에 있음이더라

15 Then the cherubim rose upward. These were the living creatures I had seen by the Kebar River. 16 When the cherubim moved, the wheels beside them moved; and when the cherubim spread their wings to rise from the ground, the wheels did not leave their side. 17 When the cherubim stood still, they also stood still; and when the cherubim rose, they rose with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in them.

10:18 여호와의 영광이 성전 문지방을 떠나서 그룹들 위에 머무르니

10:19 그룹들이 날개를 들고 내 눈 앞의 땅에서 올라가는데 그들이 나갈 때에 바퀴도 그 곁에서 함께 하더라 그들이 여호와의 전으로 들어가는 동문에 머물고 이스라엘 하나님의 영광이 그 위에 덮였더라

18 Then the glory of the Lord departed from over the threshold of the temple and stopped above the cherubim. 19 While I watched, the cherubim spread their wings and rose from the ground, and as they went, the wheels went with them. They stopped at the entrance of the east gate of the Lord’s house, and the glory of the God of Israel was above them.

10:20 그것은 내가 그발 강가에서 보던 이스라엘의 하나님 아래에 있던 생물이라 그들이 그룹인 줄을 내가 아니라

10:21 각기 네 얼굴과 네 날개가 있으며 날개 밑에는 사람의 손 형상이 있으니

10:22 그 얼굴의 형상은 내가 그발 강가에서 보던 얼굴이며 그 모양과 그 몸도 그러하며 각기 곧게 앞으로 가더라

20 These were the living creatures I had seen beneath the God of Israel by the Kebar River, and I realized that they were cherubim. 21 Each had four faces and four wings, and under their wings was what looked like human hands. 22 Their faces had the same appearance as those I had seen by the Kebar River. Each one went straight ahead.

                “미워도 다시 한번”이라는 영화가 있습니다. 1968년에 처음 개봉된 이 영화는 당시에 37만이라는 60년대 최고의 기록을 남겼습니다. 흥행 성공에 힘입어 71년까지 해마다 한 편씩 모두 4편의 속편이 제작되었습니다. 그 뿐만이 아닙니다. 80년대에는 다른 감독이 원작을 리메이크하여 “미워도 다시 한번 ‘80” 이라는 제목으로 36만 관객을 동원하며 흥행에 성공합니다. 그 다음 해에 “미워도 다시 한번 ’80 제 2부”가 나오고 잊혀졌는가 싶었더니 20년 뒤인 2002년에 ‘미워도 다시 한번 2002’가 나오고 심지어 2009년에는 제목만 가져온 “미워도 다시 한번” 이라는 드라마가 나옵니다. 영화와 드라마 뿐만이 아닙니다. 첫 영화가 개봉되었던 68년에는 남진씨가, 또 2002년에는 바이브가 “미워도 다시 한번”이라는 제목으로 노래를 내고 유행하였던 것을 기억합니다. 이렇게 영화, 드라마, 노래, 장르를 뛰어넘고 60년대부터 2000년대까지 시대를 넘나드는 흥행을 할 수 있었던 것은 아마도 “미워도 다시 한번”이라는 이 말 자체가 한국적인 정서를 너무나 잘 표현하는 말이기 때문이라고 생각합니다. 이제는 아예 “미워도 다시 한번”이라는 이 말 자체가 하나의 관용적인 표현이 되어버렸지요. 지속적으로 푸대접이나 배신을 한 사람이라도 마지막으로 다시 한번 돌아보게 되는 그런 미련 섞인 애정. 오늘 본문의 말씀이 바로 그런 하나님의 마음을 묘사하는 것이 아닌가 생각합니다. 하나님을 늘 푸대접하고 배신하던 이스라엘 백성들에 대한 심판으로 오늘 말씀은 하나님께서 성전을 떠나시는 모습을 보여줍니다. 그런데 그 하나님의 발걸음이 떨어지지가 않습니다. 단숨에 떠나실 수 있음에도 몇 번이나 머무르시며 다시 한번 돌아보시는 하나님의 모습을 볼 수 있습니다. 오늘은 발걸음이 떨어지지 않으시는 하나님이라는 제목으로 말씀을 전하기 원합니다.

Friends, there's a fascinating phenomenon in Korean culture, often encapsulated by the phrase, "Even if I hate you, just one more time." This sentiment gained immense popularity through a 1968 Korean film titled, Even If I Hate You, Once More. It was a box office smash, breaking records and spawning multiple sequels, even inspiring remakes and a TV drama decades later. The phrase itself became a common idiom, and songs were written with the same title.

Why such enduring popularity? I believe it's because "Even if I hate you, once more" captures a deep human emotion: that lingering affection, that reluctance to let go, even when someone has consistently mistreated or betrayed you. It’s that desire for one last look, one more chance, despite everything.

I think today's passage in Ezekiel 10 perfectly illustrates this very heart of God. As judgment looms over the Israelites, who have continuously dishonored and betrayed Him, our text shows God preparing to leave His temple. But His steps are heavy. He could depart in an instant, yet we see Him pause, linger, and look back—not just once, but multiple times.

Today, I want to talk about The God Whose Steps Cannot Be Severed.

                첫번째, 하나님은 당장이라도 떠나실 수 있는 기동성을 보여주십니다. 오늘 말씀의 대부분을 차지하는 9-17절의 말씀은 바로 하나님의 발등상되는 그룹들의 바퀴에 대한 묘사입니다. 하나님께서는 원래 솔로몬이 건축한 성전을 그 거처로 삼으시겠다고 약속하셨었지요. 지성소 안에 있는 언약궤를 덮고 있는 뚜껑 위의 두 천사, 그 그룹들이 하나님이 앉으시는 은혜의 보좌라고 말씀드린 적이 있습니다. 원래 언약궤는 사람들이 짊어지는 가마와 같은 구조를 하고 있지요. 왕이 타는 가마를 뭐라고 부릅니까? 어가라고 부르지요. 왕께서 행차하실 때에는 왕이 직접 움직이지 않아요. 어가를 통하여 다른 사람들이 왕을 실어나릅니다. 그렇다면 하나님의 어가이신 언약궤는 지성소에 머물러 있는데 하나님이 움직이실까요? 바로 그 대답이 오늘의 말씀인 것입니다. 하나님의 보좌가 되는 특별한 천사들, 그룹들이 하나님의 발등상이 되는데 오늘 말씀 9절을 보니 그들 곁에는 바퀴가 있다고 합니다. 무슨 뜻입니까? 움직이실 수 있다는 말이지요. 그러나 계속되는 말씀을 보면 단순히 이동이 가능한 정도가 아닙니다. 10절을 보니 “마치 바퀴 안에 바퀴가 있는 것 같으며” 라고 합니다. 단순히 한 방향으로만 가는 것이 아니라는 것이지요. 바퀴는 원래 앞 뒤로 밖에 갈 수 없지 않습니까? 그런데 바퀴 안에 바퀴가 있으면 단순히 전진과 후진만을 하는 것이 아니라 사방으로 다닐 수 있게 되는 것이지요. 그래서 11절을 보면 사방으로 몸을 돌리지 않아도 원하는 방향으로 갈 수 있다는 것입니다. 13절을 보니 그 바퀴들을 도는 것이라고 불렀다고 합니다. 이 말은 마치 회오리 바람처럼 이 바퀴들이 빠르고 자유롭게 다닐 수 있는 기동력을 가졌음을 말해주고 있는 것이지요. 16-17절은 이 바퀴들이 전자동으로 그룹의 뜻대로 자유자재로 움직일 수 있음을 보여줍니다. 이 모든 묘사들이 무엇을 가르키고 있습니까? 사방으로 자유자재로 움직일 수 있고 회오리 바람처럼 빠른 전자동 바퀴를 가진 그룹들. 그들이 하나님의 보좌이며 어가입니다. 더이상 지성소의 언약궤에서만 머물러 계시는 하나님이 아닌 것입니다. 하나님께서는 언제든지 그들을 떠날 수 있으시고 어디든지 계실 수 있음을 보여주는 것이지요. 그리고 보여주신 것처럼 오늘 하나님께서는 당신의 성전을 떠나십니다.

First, God Demonstrates His Readiness to Depart.

The bulk of our passage today, verses 9-17, describes the wheels of the cherubim, which serve as God's footstool. Remember, God had promised Solomon He would dwell in the temple Solomon built. The cherubim, the two angels covering the ark of the covenant in the Most Holy Place, were considered the throne of grace where God sat.

Now, the ark of the covenant was designed to be carried, much like a royal palanquin. When a king traveled, he didn't move himself; others carried his palanquin. So, if the ark, God's "palanquin," remained in the Most Holy Place, how could God move? Today's passage gives us the answer.

These special angels, the cherubim, serve as God's throne and footstool. Verse 9 tells us there are wheels beside them. What does this mean? It means God can move! But the description goes far beyond simple mobility. Verse 10 says, "It was as though one wheel were within another." This isn't just about moving forward or backward. With a wheel within a wheel, they aren't limited to one direction; they can move in any direction. Verse 11 emphasizes this, stating they could move "without turning as they went."

Verse 13 mentions these wheels were called "the whirling wheels." This suggests incredible speed and agility, like a whirlwind. And verses 16-17 show these wheels move automatically, in complete synchronization with the cherubim's will.

What do all these descriptions point to? Cherubim with autonomous, fast-moving, multi-directional wheels serve as God's throne and royal chariot. This means God is no longer confined to the ark of the covenant in the Most Holy Place. He can leave whenever He chooses, and be anywhere He desires. And as this passage shows, today, God is indeed preparing to leave His temple.

                두번째, 그렇게 쉽게 단번에 떠나실 수 있음에도 하나님께서는 몇 번이나 돌아보십니다. 어제의 말씀인 4절을 보면 “하나님의 영광이 그룹에서 올라와 성전 문지방에 이르니”라고 합니다. 그러나 그곳에서 멈추시고 즉시 이동하지는 않으시지요. 가는 베 옷을 입은 자에게 명령하시고 에스겔이 그 그룹들의 바퀴들의 모습과 움직임을 자세하게 묘사할 수 있도록 잠시 머무르시는 것 같습니다. 18절에 와서야 “여호와의 영광이 성전 문지방을 떠나서 그룹들 위에 머무르니” 라며 다시 움직이기 시작하심을 보여주시지요. 19절에서 그 그룹들은 이제 성전으로 들어가는 바깥뜰의 동문으로 이동해 그곳에 머무는 것을 보여주십니다. 19절은 이를 “이스라엘 하나님의 영광이 그 위에 덮였더라”라고 표현합니다. 지성소를 떠나 문지방에 이르러 바깥뜰의 동문으로 이동하시어 이제 성전을 떠나시는 모습을 보여주면서도 그 하나님이 이스라엘의 하나님이라는 것을 알리고 있는 것입니다. 이스라엘의 하나님이 당신의 처소와 당신의 백성을 떠나시는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니었을 것입니다. 그래서 하나님이 성전을 떠나시기 전에 마지막으로 성전 입구에서 잠시 멈추고 뒤돌아보신 것입니다. 하나님은 끝까지 이스라엘의 하나님이셨습니다. 이스라엘을 사랑하셨고 예루살렘을 파괴하고 싶어하지 않으셨습니다. 그러나 8:6의 말씀처럼 하나님이 아니라 이스라엘의 죄악들이 거룩하신 하나님을 당신의 성소와 성읍으로부터 멀리 떠나게 만든 것입니다. 사랑하는 당신의 백성들을 심판하시고 떠나야 하시는 하나님의 발걸음은 이처럼 쉽게 떨어지지 않으시는 것입니다.

Second, Despite His Ability to Depart Instantly, God Lingers.

If we look back to yesterday's reading, verse 4, it says, "The glory of the Lord went up from the cherubim and moved to the threshold of the temple." But He doesn't immediately leave. He pauses, giving instructions to the man clothed in linen, and seemingly allowing Ezekiel to meticulously describe the appearance and movement of the cherubim and their wheels.

It isn't until verse 18 that we read, "Then the glory of the Lord departed from over the threshold of the temple and stood above the cherubim." This indicates a renewed movement, but still not a complete departure.

In verse 19, the cherubim move to the east gate of the Lord's house, at the outer court, and there they stand. Verse 19 concludes with, "And the glory of the God of Israel was over them." Even as God prepares to leave the Most Holy Place, then the threshold, and now the outer court, He is still identified as the God of Israel.

It couldn't have been easy for the God of Israel to leave His dwelling place and His people. That’s why, before fully departing the temple, God paused at the entrance, looking back one last time. God remained, to the very end, the God of Israel. He loved Israel and did not want to destroy Jerusalem. However, as Ezekiel 8:6 tells us, it was Israel's sins, their wickedness, that drove a holy God far from His sanctuary and His city. The steps of God, forced to judge and leave His beloved people, simply could not be severed.

                말씀을 맺습니다. 거룩하신 하나님께서는 더이상은 죄악에 물든 당신의 성전에 머무르실 수 없었습니다. 어디든지 가실 수 있고 어디든 머무실 수 있음에도 당신께서 선택하셨던 성전입니다. 그 발걸음이 그렇게 쉽게 떨어질리 없습니다. 하나님께서 원하셨던 것은 당신의 백성들이 돌아오는 것입니다. 심판 중에도 하나님의 마음은 당신의 백성을 향해 계시는 것입니다. 우리를 돌아보시는 하나님. 우리에게서 떠나시기를 원치 않으시는 분이 바로 우리 하나님입니다. 그런 하나님의 영광이 우리 안의 성전에 계속 머무르실 수 있도록 늘 깨어 기도해야 할 것입니다.

Conclusion

To conclude, a holy God could no longer dwell in a temple defiled by sin. Though He could go anywhere and reside anywhere, this was the temple He had specifically chosen. His steps would not, could not, easily fall away.

What God truly desired was for His people to return to Him. Even in judgment, God's heart remains turned towards His people. The God who looks back at us, the One who does not want to leave us—that is our God.

Let us, then, be ever vigilant in prayer, ensuring that the glory of such a God can continue to dwell in the temple within each of us.
