10:1 이에 내가 보니 그룹들 머리 위 궁창에 남보석 같은 것이 나타나는데 그들 위에 보좌의 형상이 있는 것 같더라

10:2 하나님이 가는 베 옷을 입은 사람에게 말씀하여 이르시되 너는 그룹 밑에 있는 바퀴 사이로 들어가 그 속에서 숯불을 두 손에 가득히 움켜 가지고 성읍 위에 흩으라 하시매 그가 내 목전에서 들어가더라

1 I looked, and I saw the likeness of a throne of lapis lazuli above the vault that was over the heads of the cherubim. 2 The Lord said to the man clothed in linen, “Go in among the wheels beneath the cherubim. Fill your hands with burning coals from among the cherubim and scatter them over the city.” And as I watched, he went in.

10:3 그 사람이 들어갈 때에 그룹들은 성전 오른쪽에 서 있고 구름은 안뜰에 가득하며

10:4 여호와의 영광이 그룹에서 올라와 성전 문지방에 이르니 구름이 성전에 가득하며 여호와의 영화로운 광채가 뜰에 가득하였고

10:5 그룹들의 날개 소리는 바깥뜰까지 들리는데 전능하신 하나님이 말씀하시는 음성 같더라 

3 Now the cherubim were standing on the south side of the temple when the man went in, and a cloud filled the inner court. 4 Then the glory of the Lord rose from above the cherubim and moved to the threshold of the temple. The cloud filled the temple, and the court was full of the radiance of the glory of the Lord. 5 The sound of the wings of the cherubim could be heard as far away as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when he speaks.

10:6 하나님이 가는 베 옷을 입은 자에게 명령하시기를 바퀴 사이 곧 그룹들 사이에서 불을 가져가라 하셨으므로 그가 들어가 바퀴 옆에 서매

10:7 그 그룹이 그룹들 사이에서 손을 내밀어 그 그룹들 사이에 있는 불을 집어 가는 베 옷을 입은 자의 손에 주매 그가 받아 가지고 나가는데

10:8 그룹들의 날개 밑에 사람의 손 같은 것이 나타나더라

6 When the Lord commanded the man in linen, “Take fire from among the wheels, from among the cherubim,” the man went in and stood beside a wheel. 7 Then one of the cherubim reached out his hand to the fire that was among them. He took up some of it and put it into the hands of the man in linen, who took it and went out. 8 (Under the wings of the cherubim could be seen what looked like human hands.)

            어제의 말씀 마지막 구절인 9:11은 이렇게 끝을 맺습니다. “보라 가는베 옷을 입고 허리에 먹 그릇을 찬 사람이 복명하여 이르되 주께서 내게 명령하신 대로 내가 준행하였나이다 하더라” 6명의 심판자 중에 가는베 옷을 입은 심판자는 구원의 표식인 표를 탄식하며 우는 자들의 이마에 그리던 자임을 기억하실 것입니다. 그의 뒤를 따라다니며 나머지 심판자들이 칼로 가증한 일을 행하였던 자들을 모두 죽이는 무기로 심판하였습니다. 그런데 이제 그 구원의 표를 그리는 일을 다 마쳤다고 합니다. 이는 무슨 뜻입니까? 더이상 이 심판을 피할 자들이 없다는 것입니다. 이마에 표를 받지 않은 사람들은 모두 죽이는 무기의 심판을 받았다는 뜻이지요. 그리고 오늘 말씀입니다. 표 그리는 자로 하여금 숯불을 두 손 가득히 움켜 가지고 성읍 위에 흩으라고 말씀하십니다. 이는 죽이는 무기의 심판이 끝나고 하나님의 불의 심판이 예루살렘 성을 모두 불태우는 것을 뜻하지요. 하지만 우리는 이 하나님의 거룩한 숯불이 또다른 의미를 가지는 것을 이사야서에서 본 적이 있습니다. 이사야서 6:5-7에서 천사가 그 불타는 숯불을 이사야의 입술에 대자 이사야의 죄가 사라지고 그의 허물이 덮어지는 것을 목격하였습니다. 그렇다면 우리는 이 숯불의 심판이 궁극적으로 예루살렘을 정결케 하고 그 땅의 거룩함을 회복하기 위한 것임을 알 수 있습니다. 하나님의 심판은 단순히 그들을 향한 분노로 그들을 진멸하시는 것이 목적이 아니었던 것입니다. 오늘은 궁극적인 심판의 목적, 거룩함의 회복이라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

Introduction

Yesterday's message, in Ezekiel 9:11, concluded with these words: "Behold, the man clothed in linen, who had the writing case at his side, reported, saying, 'I have done as you commanded me.'"

You'll recall that among the six executioners, the man in linen was the one who marked the foreheads of those who sighed and groaned, the sign of salvation. The other executioners, with their deadly weapons, followed him, putting to death all who had committed abominable acts. Now, we are told that the work of marking is finished. What does this mean? It means there's no longer anyone who can escape this judgment. Everyone not marked on their forehead received the judgment of the deadly weapons.

And then comes today's passage. The man who marked the foreheads is now commanded to take handfuls of burning coals from between the cherubim and scatter them over the city. This signifies that the judgment by the deadly weapons has concluded, and now God's fiery judgment will consume Jerusalem.

However, we've seen this holy coal of God carry another meaning in the book of Isaiah. In Isaiah 6:5-7, an angel touched Isaiah's lips with a burning coal, and Isaiah's guilt was removed, his sin atoned for. This suggests that this fiery judgment, though devastating, ultimately aims to purify Jerusalem and restore the land's holiness. God's judgment wasn't simply about wrath or utter destruction.

Today, we want to consider this ultimate purpose of judgment: the restoration of holiness.

            첫번째, 하나님은 거룩한 분이십니다. 서론에서 말씀드렸듯이 표 그리는 자의 보고가 끝나자 오늘 말씀 1절은 이렇게 시작합니다. 함께 읽어보겠습니다. “이에 내가 보니 그룹들 머리 위 궁창에 남보석 같은 것이 나타나는데 그들 위에 보좌의 형상이 있는 것 같더라” 상당히 뜬금 없지요. 방금 전까지 인정 사정없는 심판에 대해서 이야기하고 있지 않았습니까? 그런데 갑자기 천사들 머리 위 하늘에 사파이어 같이 푸르게 빛나는 하나님의 보좌가 나타나셨습니다. 가증한 일을 행하던 자들이 모두 심판을 받자 거룩하신 하나님이 등장하신 것입니다. 오늘의 말씀은 이런 하나님의 거룩하심과 영광에 대해서 반복해서 이야기 하고 있습니다. 3절에서 하나님의 임재를 상징하는 구름이 성전 안뜰에 가득하였다고 합니다. 4절에서 여호와의 영광, 여호와의 영화로운 광채가 뜰에 가득하였다라고 합니다. 이들은 시각적으로 하나님의 영광과 거룩하심이 어떠한 것인지를 우리에게 알려주지요. 5절에서는 “그룹들의 날개소리는 바깥 뜰까지 들리는데 전능하신 하나님이 말씀하시는 음성” 같았다 라고 합니다. 청각적으로 하나님의 영광과 거룩하심을 알려주는 것입니다. 시각과 청각, 우리는 이렇게 여러가지 감각을 사용하여 묘사하는 것을 공감각적 심상이라고 국어시간에 배웠을 것입니다. 둘 이상의 감각을 섞어서 표현의 극대화를 꾀하는 문학적인 작문 기법이지요. 하나님의 거룩하심, 하나님의 영광이 어떠한 것인지를 극대화해서 표현하고 있는 것입니다. 자, 그러면 이 심판의 와중에 왜 에스겔은 이렇게 하나님의 거룩하심과 영광을 극대화해서 표현해야 했을까요? 그것은 바로 이런 하나님의 거룩하심과 영광이 이 숯불 심판과 매우 밀접한 관계가 있음을 보여주려 한 것입니다. 그것은 무엇입니까?

I. God is Holy

As I mentioned in the introduction, after the report from the man in linen, today's passage begins in verse 1. Let's read it together:

"Then I looked, and behold, on the expanse above the heads of the cherubim there appeared above them something like a sapphire stone, in appearance like a throne."

This might seem quite sudden, mightn't it? Just a moment ago, we were talking about an uncompromising judgment, and then suddenly, a sapphire-blue, shining throne of God appears above the cherubim's heads. Once those who committed abominable acts had been judged, the Holy God emerged. Today's passage repeatedly speaks of this holiness and glory of God.

In verse 3, the cloud symbolizing God's presence filled the inner court of the temple. Verse 4 says, "The glory of the Lord filled the temple, and the court was full of the brightness of the glory of the Lord." These descriptions visually convey what God's glory and holiness are like.

In verse 5, it says, "The sound of the wings of the cherubim was heard as far as the outer court, like the voice of Almighty God when he speaks." This uses sound to convey God's glory and holiness. In language arts, we learned about this blending of senses—sight and sound—as synesthesia, a literary technique that maximizes expression by combining two or more senses. It's used here to vividly describe God's holiness and glory.

So, why would Ezekiel emphasize God's holiness and glory so intensely in the midst of this judgment? It's because he wants to show us that God's holiness and glory are intimately connected to this burning coal judgment. What is that connection?

            바로 두번째, 이 숯불 심판의 목적이 하나님의 거룩하심을 따라 그 땅의 거룩함을 회복하는 것임을 보여주는 것입니다. 2절에서 하나님이 가는베 옷을 입은 사람에게 말씀하십니다. 그는 누구입니까? 탄식하며 우는 자들의 이마에 표를 그리던 자입니다. 그에게 숯불을 두 손에 가득히 움켜 가지고 성읍 위에 흩으라 하십니다. 물론 5:4의 말씀같이 불이 예루살렘으로부터 나와서 이스라엘 온 족속에게로 임하는 것을 뜻할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 명령을 받은 자가 앞 장에서 구원의 표식을 남기던 천사임을 기억할 때 조금 다른 뜻이 있을 것 같습니다. 제가 서론에서 말씀드렸듯이 하나님의 거룩한 숯불을 성읍에 흩음으로 그 땅의 죄악을 지우시고 거룩함을 회복시키려 하신 것입니다. 2절에서 명령을 받은 천사는 에스겔이 보는 눈 앞에서 그룹들 사이로 들어갔다고 합니다. 그런데 6절을 보니 같은 말씀을 반복하고 계십니다. 하나님이 그에게 불을 가져가라고 명령하시고 그는 들어가서 바퀴 옆에 섰다고 하는데 그러면 대체 3-5절 사이에는 무슨 일이 일어난 것일까요? 저는 오늘 말씀을 보면서 마치 슬로우모션을 보는 것 같다는 생각을 했습니다. 2절에서 그가 에스겔의 눈 앞에서 들어갑니다. 3절에서도 아직 그는 들어가고 있습니다. 그 사람이 들어갈 때에 라고 하지 않습니까? 그리고 나오는 말씀들이 모두 무엇에 관한 말씀입니까? 바로 제가 첫번째 대지에서 말씀드렸던 하나님의 거룩하심과 하나님의 영광에 대한 묘사입니다. 여러분 슬로우 모션을 어떤 때에 사용합니까? 바로 그 내용을 강조할 때에 사용하지요. 마치 영화에서 주인공이 첫 눈에 상대에게 반하였을 때에 상대방의 모습을 시간이 멈춘 것처럼 슬로우 모션으로 표현하듯이 오늘 말씀도 마찬가지인 것입니다. 이 숯불은 하나님의 거룩하심을 보여주는 것이지요. 그 숯불을 두 손에 가득히 움켜가지고 성읍 위에 흩으라고 하시는 말씀은 바로 죄악으로 더렵혀진 예루살렘 땅을 이제 다시금 거룩하게 정화시키신다는 의미인 것입니다. 이는 하나님의 궁극적인 심판의 목적이 거룩함의 회복이라는 것을 보여주시는 것입니다.

II. The Purpose of This burning coal Judgment is the Restoration of Holiness According to God's Holiness

In verse 2, God speaks to the man in linen. Who is he? He's the one who marked the foreheads of those who sighed and groaned. God tells him to take handfuls of burning coals and scatter them over the city. While this could certainly mean that fire would come out from Jerusalem to consume all the house of Israel, as in 5:4, remembering that the one receiving the command is the angel who offered salvation in the previous chapter, it suggests a slightly different meaning. As I mentioned in the introduction, by scattering God's holy coals over the city, He aims to remove its wickedness and restore its holiness.

Verse 2 says that the angel entered between the cherubim in Ezekiel's sight. But then in verse 6, the same command is repeated. God commands him to take fire, and he enters and stands beside the wheel. So what exactly happened between verses 3 and 5?

As I read today's passage, it felt like watching something in slow motion.

In verse 2, he enters before Ezekiel's eyes.

In verse 3, he's still entering: "As the man went in..." And what follows are all descriptions of God's holiness and glory, as I explained in the first point.

When do we use slow motion? To emphasize something, don't we? Just as in a movie where a protagonist sees someone for the first time and falls in love, and that person's image is shown in slow motion as if time has stopped, today's passage is similar. These coals show God's holiness. The command to take handfuls of these coals and scatter them over the city means that the land of Jerusalem, defiled by sin, will now be sanctified and purified. This shows that God's ultimate purpose in judgment is the restoration of holiness.

            말씀을 맺습니다. 하나님은 거룩한 분이십니다. 그리고 그 하나님께서는 우리도 당신과 같이 거룩하라고 말씀하셨습니다. 하나님의 궁극적인 심판의 목적은 바로 거룩함의 회복이었습니다. 그러므로 우리는 하나님의 심판이 임하기 전에 스스로를 돌아보고 거룩함을 회복해야 합니다. 이 말씀을 붙들고 우리의 죄를 고백하며 하나님의 거룩하심이 우리 안에 회복되게 해달라고 기도하시며 나아가기 원합니다.

Conclusion

Let's conclude. God is holy. And this Holy God commanded us to be holy, just as He is. The ultimate purpose of God's judgment was the restoration of holiness. Therefore, before God's judgment comes upon us, we must examine ourselves and restore holiness. Let us hold onto this Word, confess our sins, and pray that God's holiness may be restored within us.
