8:1 여섯째 해 여섯째 달 초닷새에 나는 집에 앉았고 유다의 장로들은 내 앞에 앉아 있는데 주 여호와의 권능이 거기에서 내게 내리기로

8:2 내가 보니 불 같은 형상이 있더라 그 허리 아래의 모양은 불 같고 허리 위에는 광채가 나서 단 쇠 같은데

8:3 그가 손 같은 것을 펴서 내 머리털 한 모숨을 잡으며 주의 영이 나를 들어 천지 사이로 올리시고 하나님의 환상 가운데에 나를 이끌어 예루살렘으로 가서 안 뜰로 들어가는 북향한 문에 이르시니 거기에는 질투의 우상 곧 질투를 일어나게 하는 우상의 자리가 있는 곳이라

8:4 이스라엘 하나님의 영광이 거기에 있는데 내가 들에서 본 모습과 같더라

1 In the sixth year, in the sixth month on the fifth day, while I was sitting in my house and the elders of Judah were sitting before me, the hand of the Sovereign Lord came on me there. 2 I looked, and I saw a figure like that of a man. From what appeared to be his waist down he was like fire, and from there up his appearance was as bright as glowing metal. 3 He stretched out what looked like a hand and took me by the hair of my head. The Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and in visions of God he took me to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the north gate of the inner court, where the idol that provokes to jealousy stood. 4 And there before me was the glory of the God of Israel, as in the vision I had seen in the plain.

8:5 그가 내게 이르시되 인자야 이제 너는 눈을 들어 북쪽을 바라 보라 하시기로 내가 눈을 들어 북쪽을 바라보니 제단문 어귀 북쪽에 그 질투의 우상이 있더라

5 Then he said to me, “Son of man, look toward the north.” So I looked, and in the entrance north of the gate of the altar I saw this idol of jealousy.

8:6 그가 또 내게 이르시되 인자야 이스라엘 족속이 행하는 일을 보느냐 그들이 여기에서 크게 가증한 일을 행하여 나로 내 성소를 멀리 떠나게 하느니라 너는 다시 다른 큰 가증한 일을 보리라 하시더라

6 And he said to me, “Son of man, do you see what they are doing—the utterly detestable things the Israelites are doing here, things that will drive me far from my sanctuary? But you will see things that are even more detestable.”

8:7 그가 나를 이끌고 뜰 문에 이르시기로 내가 본즉 담에 구멍이 있더라

8:8 그가 내게 이르시되 인자야 너는 이 담을 헐라 하시기로 내가 그 담을 허니 한 문이 있더라

7 Then he brought me to the entrance to the court. I looked, and I saw a hole in the wall. 8 He said to me, “Son of man, now dig into the wall.” So I dug into the wall and saw a doorway there.

8:9 또 내게 이르시되 들어가서 그들이 거기에서 행하는 가증하고 악한 일을 보라 하시기로

8:10 내가 들어가 보니 각양 곤충과 가증한 짐승과 이스라엘 족속의 모든 우상을 그 사방 벽에 그렸고

8:11 이스라엘 족속의 장로 중 칠십 명이 그 앞에 섰으며 사반의 아들 야아사냐도 그 가운데에 섰고 각기 손에 향로를 들었는데 향연이 구름 같이 오르더라

9 And he said to me, “Go in and see the wicked and detestable things they are doing here.” 10 So I went in and looked, and I saw portrayed all over the walls all kinds of crawling things and unclean animals and all the idols of Israel. 11 In front of them stood seventy elders of Israel, and Jaazaniah son of Shaphan was standing among them. Each had a censer in his hand, and a fragrant cloud of incense was rising.

8:12 또 내게 이르시되 인자야 이스라엘 족속의 장로들이 각각 그 우상의 방안 어두운 가운데에서 행하는 것을 네가 보았느냐 그들이 이르기를 여호와께서 우리를 보지 아니하시며 여호와께서 이 땅을 버리셨다 하느니라

8:13 또 내게 이르시되 너는 다시 그들이 행하는 바 다른 큰 가증한 일을 보리라 하시더라

12 He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the elders of Israel are doing in the darkness, each at the shrine of his own idol? They say, ‘The Lord does not see us; the Lord has forsaken the land.’” 13 Again, he said, “You will see them doing things that are even more detestable.”

8:14 그가 또 나를 데리고 여호와의 전으로 들어가는 북문에 이르시기로 보니 거기에 여인들이 앉아 담무스를 위하여 애곡하더라

8:15 그가 또 내게 이르시되 인자야 네가 그것을 보았느냐 너는 또 이보다 더 큰 가증한 일을 보리라 하시더라

14 Then he brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the house of the Lord, and I saw women sitting there, mourning the god Tammuz. 15 He said to me, “Do you see this, son of man? You will see things that are even more detestable than this.”

8:16 그가 또 나를 데리고 여호와의 성전 안뜰에 들어가시니라 보라 여호와의 성전 문 곧 현관과 제단 사이에서 약 스물다섯 명이 여호와의 성전을 등지고 낯을 동쪽으로 향하여 동쪽 태양에게 예배하더라

16 He then brought me into the inner court of the house of the Lord, and there at the entrance to the temple, between the portico and the altar, were about twenty-five men. With their backs toward the temple of the Lord and their faces toward the east, they were bowing down to the sun in the east.

8:17 또 내게 이르시되 인자야 네가 보았느냐 유다 족속이 여기에서 행한 가증한 일을 적다 하겠느냐 그들이 그 땅을 폭행으로 채우고 또 다시 내 노여움을 일으키며 심지어 나뭇가지를 그 코에 두었느니라

8:18 그러므로 나도 분노로 갚아 불쌍히 여기지 아니하며 긍휼을 베풀지도 아니하리니 그들이 큰 소리로 내 귀에 부르짖을지라도 내가 듣지 아니하리라

17 He said to me, “Have you seen this, son of man? Is it a trivial matter for the people of Judah to do the detestable things they are doing here? Must they also fill the land with violence and continually arouse my anger? Look at them putting the branch to their nose! 18 Therefore I will deal with them in anger; I will not look on them with pity or spare them. Although they shout in my ears, I will not listen to them.”

                  기독교 서적 중에 “내 마음 그리스도의 집” 이라는 책이 있습니다. 로버트 멍어 (Robert Munger)라는 분이 쓰신 책인데 내용이 짧고 간단한데도 깊은 울림이 있는 책입니다. 책 제목처럼 우리의 마음을 여러 개의 방이 있는 집으로 비유하지요. 책의 내용은 예수님을 마음에 영접한 주인공이 자신의 집으로 예수님을 초대하며 일어나는 일을 적은 것입니다. 각 방을 보여드리면서 예수님께 그 방의 권리를 하나씩 내어드리지요. 마지막에는 자신이 가장 숨기고 싶었던 것들로 가득한 벽장까지도 예수님께 열어드립니다. 그리고는 예수님께 자신의 집의 주인이 되어 달라고 고백하는 모습을 볼 수 있습니다. 이 “내 마음 그리스도의 집”이라는 책처럼 하나님께서는 우리의 마음을 당신의 성전으로 부르셨습니다. 고린도전서 3:16 “너희는 너희가 하나님의 성전인 것과 하나님의 성령이 너희 안에 계시는 것을 알지 못하느냐” 그렇다면 하나님의 성전인 우리의 마음에는 하나님이 계셔야 할 것입니다. 그러나 오늘 본문의 말씀을 보니 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님의 성전에서 하나님을 예배하였던 것이 아니라 다른 것들을 예배하였던 것 같습니다. 하나님께서는 그런 그들에게 질투하시고 노여움을 참지 못하십니다. 환상을 통하여 에스겔에게 그들의 가장 은밀한 장소에서 일어나는 우상숭배까지 다 폭로하십니다. 우리는 어떻습니까? 우리 마음의 가장 은밀한 곳까지 하나님이 주인 되십니까? 오늘은 내 마음의 성소에 누가 계시는가? 라는 제목으로 말씀을 전하기 원합니다.

There's a wonderful Christian book titled "My Heart, Christ's Home" by Robert Munger. It's a short, simple book, yet it carries a profound message. As the title suggests, it likens our heart to a house with many rooms. The book describes what happens when the main character, who has invited Jesus into their heart, welcomes Him into their home. They show Jesus each room, gradually surrendering the rights to each one. Eventually, they even open the closet, filled with the things they most wanted to hide, and confess to Jesus, asking Him to be the true Lord of their entire home.

Just as in "My Heart, Christ's Home," God has called our hearts to be His temple. 1 Corinthians 3:16 tells us, "Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you?" If our hearts are God's temple, then God Himself should reside there. Yet, in today's passage from Ezekiel, we see that the people of Israel were not worshipping God in His temple, but rather worshipping other things. God was filled with jealousy and could not contain His anger towards them. Through a vivid vision, He exposed all their idolatry, even what was happening in their most secret places.

What about us? Is God truly Lord of the most hidden places in our hearts? Today, I want to preach on the topic: "Who Dwells in the Sanctuary of My Heart?"

                  오늘 본문 말씀은 집에 앉아있던 에스겔에게 환상으로 임하셔서 하나님의 성전에서 일어나고 있는 우상숭배를 낱낱이 드러내시는 내용입니다. 네가지 가증한 일에 대한 환상을 보여주시지요. 첫번째는 성전 안뜰의 질투의 우상입니다. 3절 말씀입니다. “하나님의 환상 가운데에 나를 이끌어 예루살렘으로 가서 안뜰로 들어가는 북향한 문에 이르시니 거기에는 질투의 우상 곧 질투를 일어나게 하는 우상의 자리가 있는 곳이라.” 여기서 말하는 안뜰이란 성전 안뜰을 말합니다. 모든 사람이 출입할 수 있는 바깥뜰이 아닌 제사에 참여하는 사람들이 들어올 수 있는 안뜰에 우상이 보란듯이 서있는 것입니다. 이를 하나님께서는 6절에서 크게 가증한 일이라고 말씀하십니다. 그러나 다른 큰 가증한 일을 보리라 하시며 다음 환상을 보여주십니다.

두번째 환상입니다. 7-13절까지 뜰 문에 이르러서 구멍난 담을 헐고 나서야 보이는 비밀스러운 문이 있습니다. 그 안에 들어가보니 10절에 “이스라엘 족속의 모든 우상을 그 사방 벽에 그렸고” 11절, 이스라엘 족속의 칠십 장로가 향로를 피우는데 그 연기가 구름과 같았다고 합니다. 칠십인의 장로는 이스라엘 백성을 대표하는 사람들입니다. 이들이 우상 숭배하던 곳은 성전 안뜰의 방이라, 일반인들은 그곳에서 무슨 일이 일어나는지 알 수 없었습니다. 이들은 겉으로는 하나님을 예배하는 것처럼 보였지만 아무도 모르는 곳에서 우상숭배를 하고 있던 것입니다. 그러나 가장 은밀하고, 12절, 어두운 가운데에서 행하여진 우상숭배도 하나님은 다 보고 계셨습니다. 그런데 하나님은 이것 말고도 다른 큰 가증한 일을 또 보이시겠다고 하십니다.

Four Abominations in the Temple

Today's passage describes a vision given to Ezekiel while he was sitting at home. In this vision, God reveals, in detail, the idolatry taking place within His temple. He shows Ezekiel four abominable acts.

The first is the idol of jealousy in the temple courtyard. Verse 3 says, "He brought me in visions of God to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the inner gate that faces north, where was the seat of the idol of jealousy, which provokes to jealousy." This "inner court" is the temple's inner courtyard. Not the outer court where everyone could enter, but the inner court, reserved for those participating in sacrifices, where an idol brazenly stood. God calls this a "great abomination" in verse 6. But He tells Ezekiel to watch, for he will see even greater abominations.

The second vision appears in verses 7-13. Ezekiel is brought to the courtyard gate, where he digs through a hole in the wall, revealing a secret door. Inside, in verse 10, he sees "every form of creeping thing and detestable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, drawn on the wall all around." Then, in verse 11, we read that seventy elders of the house of Israel were burning incense, and the smoke rose like a cloud. These seventy elders represented the people of Israel. The place where they worshipped idols was a chamber within the temple courtyard, a secret room where ordinary people couldn't know what was happening. On the surface, they appeared to be worshipping God, but in secret, they were engaged in idolatry. Yet, as verse 12 reveals, even in the most secret and darkest places, God saw everything. And still, God tells Ezekiel He will show him even greater abominations.

세번째 환상입니다. 14절, 성전으로 들어가는 북문에서 여인들이 앉아서 초장의 신 담무스를 위하여 애곡하고 있습니다. 건기에 태양신 샤마슈에 의해 죽어 지하로 내려갔다가 우기가 되면 살아난다는 신입니다. 이 여인들은 담무스의 아내 이슈타르의 역할을 맡아 우상인 죽은 담무스를 위하여 애곡하고 있는 것입니다. 그것 뿐입니까? 하나님께서는 이보다 더 큰 가증한 일을 보이시겠다고 하십니다. 마지막 네번째 환상, 16절을 보니 아예 성전 안뜰에서 약 25명의 제사장들이 하나님의 성전을 뒤로하고 동쪽 태양신에게 예배하고 있습니다.

이 네가지 가증한 일의 환상을 통하여 말씀하시는 것이 무엇입니까? 하나님께서는 당신의 성전에서 일어나고 있는 우상 숭배를 그 안과 밖, 가장 은밀한 곳까지 다 보고 계시고 알고 계십니다. 우리의 마음 또한 마찬가지입니다. 우리가 하나님을 섬긴다고 하면서도 우리 마음의 가장 은밀하고 깊숙한 곳에 있는 하나님보다 더 중요한 것. 하나님은 그것을 알고 계시고 또 보고 계십니다. 오늘 하나님께서는 그것들을 하나님 앞에 가증한 일이라고 말씀하십니다. 6절 말씀을 보니 그 가증한 일들이 하나님께서 당신의 성소를 멀리 떠나게 한다고 말씀하십니다. 17절에 그 가증한 일이 결코 적지 않고 그런 그들에게 노여움을 일으키시며, 18절, 분노로 갚으시고 불쌍히 여기지 않으시겠다고 말씀하십니다.

The third vision is in verse 14, at the north gate of the temple. There, women were sitting and weeping for Tammuz. Tammuz was a pagan deity associated with fertility and drought, believed to die in the dry season and revive with the rains. These women were playing the role of Ishtar, Tammuz's consort, mourning for a dead idol. And there's more. God declares He will show Ezekiel even greater abominations than this.

Finally, the fourth vision in verse 16 shows approximately twenty-five priests right in the inner court of the temple, turning their backs on the Lord's temple and worshipping the sun god to the east.

God Sees and Cares

What do these four abominable visions reveal to us? God sees and knows all the idolatry happening in His temple—both overtly and in the most hidden, secret places. Our hearts are no different. Even as we claim to serve God, there may be things in the deepest, most secret parts of our hearts that are more important to us than God. God knows and sees these things. Today, God calls them abominable in His sight.

Verse 6 says that these abominations cause God to depart from His sanctuary. And in verse 17, He states that these abominations are "too great" and will provoke His wrath. Verse 18 warns that He will repay them with fury and will have no pity.

그러나 우리는 그것이 하나님께서 진정 원하시는 것이 아님을 본문의 말씀을 통하여 유추할 수 있습니다. 1절을 다시 보시면 하나님께서 에스겔에게 환상을 보여주실 때 에스겔은 혼자가 아니라 유다의 장로들과 함께 앉아 있었습니다. 이 환상을 유다의 장로들이 함께 보지 않았다고 하더라도 그 환상의 내용을 가장 먼저 들을 사람들은 에스겔 앞에 앉아있던 장로들일 것입니다. 특별히 지도자들의 부패와 우상숭배를 보여주셨던 환상인 만큼 그들에게 직접적으로 경고하시게 될 것입니다. 또한 에스겔에게 환상으로 임하실 때에 하나님께서는 당신의 영광을 아낌없이 드러내십니다. 하나님의 권능이 장로들 앞에서 에스겔에게 내리십니다. 불과 같은 형상으로 광채를 드러내시며 하나님의 영으로 그를 천지 사이로 올리십니다. 4절을 보면 “이스라엘 하나님의 영광이 거기에 있는데 내가 들에서 본 모습과 같더라” 거기가 어디입니까? 하나님께서 떠나시겠다고 말씀하셨던 당신의 성전입니다. 하나님의 영광이 아직 당신의 성소에 계심을 처음 에스겔에게 나타나셨던 모습 그대로 보여주십니다. 놀라운 권능과 광채와 영광의 하나님의 모습입니다. 그러한 당신의 모습을 에스겔에게 친히 보이셨던 것은 그들이 섬기고 있는 우상들이 얼마나 미천하고 형편없는 것인지를 깨닫게 해주시는 것입니다. 에스겔을 통하여 하나님께서는 장로들에게 말씀하고 계시는 것입니다. 너희들의 성전에 누구를 섬기겠느냐?

However, we can infer from the text that this is not what God truly desires. Look back at verse 1. When God gives Ezekiel this vision, Ezekiel is not alone; the elders of Judah are sitting with him. Even if these elders didn't see the vision directly, they would be the first to hear its message. Since the vision specifically exposes the corruption and idolatry of the leaders, it serves as a direct warning to them.

Moreover, when God appears to Ezekiel in the vision, He reveals His glory without reservation. God's power descends upon Ezekiel in the presence of the elders. He appears as a fiery figure, radiant, and His Spirit lifts Ezekiel between heaven and earth. Verse 4 states, "And behold, the glory of the God of Israel was there, like the appearance that I saw in the valley." Where was this? It was in His very temple, the place God spoke of departing from. God shows Ezekiel that His glory is still in His sanctuary, appearing just as He did when Ezekiel first encountered Him. This is the appearance of a God of incredible power, radiance, and glory. By personally showing Ezekiel His magnificent self, God intends to make them realize how insignificant and worthless the idols they serve truly are. Through Ezekiel, God is speaking to these elders: "Who will you serve in your temple?"

말씀을 맺습니다. 하나님께서는 본문의 말씀을 통해 우리에게도 같은 질문을 하고 계십니다. 너희들의 성전에 누구를 섬기겠느냐? 우리가 아무리 숨기려 하여도 하나님께서는 우리 마음 가장 은밀한 곳까지 다 아시는 분이십니다. 우리의 마음이 흔들리고 있다면 우리는 기억해야 합니다. 하나님의 놀라운 권능과 광채와 영광과 사랑을. 그때에야 비로소 우리는 우리가 무엇을 붙들어야하고 무엇을 버려야 할지 분명하게 알게 되기 때문입니다. 가치 없는 것을 마음의 성소에 두지 마십시오. 여러분의 마음의 성전이 하나님의 영광으로 늘 밝게 빛나기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Conclusion: Who Will You Serve in Your Sanctuary?

The Lord asks us the same question today: "Who will you serve in your sanctuary?" No matter how much we try to hide it, God knows the deepest, most secret parts of our hearts. If our hearts are wavering, we must remember God's amazing power, radiance, glory, and love. Only then will we clearly understand what we should hold onto and what we should cast away. Do not keep worthless things in the sanctuary of your heart. May the temple of your heart always shine brightly with God's glory. Amen.
