6:1 여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하여 이르시되

6:2 인자야 너는 이스라엘 산을 향하여 그들에게 예언하여

6:3 이르기를 이스라엘 산들아 주 여호와의 말씀을 들으라 주 여호와께서 산과 언덕과 시내와 골짜기를 향하여 이같이 말씀하시기를 나 곧 내가 칼이 너희에게 임하게 하여 너희 산당을 멸하리니

6:4 너희 제단들이 황폐하고 분향제단들이 깨뜨려질 것이며 너희가 죽임을 당하여 너희 우상 앞에 엎드러지게 할 것이라

6:5 이스라엘 자손의 시체를 그 우상 앞에 두며 너희 해골을 너희 제단 사방에 흩으리라

6:6 내가 너희가 거주하는 모든 성읍이 사막이 되게 하며 산당을 황폐하게 하리니 이는 너희 제단이 깨어지고 황폐하며 너희 우상들이 깨어져 없어지며 너희 분향제단들이 찍히며 너희가 만든 것이 폐하여지며

6:7 또 너희가 죽임을 당하여 엎드러지게 하여 내가 여호와인 줄을 너희가 알게 하려 함이라

1 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, set your face against the mountains of Israel; prophesy against them 3 and say: ‘You mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Sovereign Lord. This is what the Sovereign Lord says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys: I am about to bring a sword against you, and I will destroy your high places. 4 Your altars will be demolished and your incense altars will be smashed; and I will slay your people in front of your idols. 5 I will lay the dead bodies of the Israelites in front of their idols, and I will scatter your bones around your altars. 6 Wherever you live, the towns will be laid waste and the high places demolished, so that your altars will be laid waste and devastated, your idols smashed and ruined, your incense altars broken down, and what you have made wiped out. 7 Your people will fall slain among you, and you will know that I am the Lord.

6:8 그러나 너희가 여러 나라에 흩어질 때에 내가 너희 중에서 칼을 피하여 이방인들 중에 살아 남은 자가 있게 할지라

6:9 너희 중에서 살아 남은 자가 사로잡혀 이방인들 중에 있어서 나를 기억하되 그들이 음란한 마음으로 나를 떠나고 음란한 눈으로 우상을 섬겨 나를 근심하게 한 것을 기억하고 스스로 한탄하리니 이는 그 모든 가증한 일로 악을 행하였음이라

6:10 그 때에야 그들이 나를 여호와인 줄 알리라 내가 이런 재앙을 그들에게 내리겠다 한 말이 헛되지 아니하니라

8 “‘But I will spare some, for some of you will escape the sword when you are scattered among the lands and nations. 9 Then in the nations where they have been carried captive, those who escape will remember me—how I have been grieved by their adulterous hearts, which have turned away from me, and by their eyes, which have lusted after their idols. They will loathe themselves for the evil they have done and for all their detestable practices. 10 And they will know that I am the Lord; I did not threaten in vain to bring this calamity on them.

6:11 주 여호와께서 이같이 이르시되 너는 손뼉을 치고 발을 두르며 말할지어다 오호라 이스라엘 족속이 모든 가증한 악을 행하므로 마침내 칼과 기근과 전염병에 망하되

6:12 먼 데 있는 자는 전염병에 죽고 가까운데 있는 자는 칼에 엎드러지고 남아 있어 에워싸인 자는 기근에 죽으리라 이같이 내 진노를 그들에게 이룬즉

6:13 그 죽임 당한 시체들이 그 우상들 사이에, 제단 사방에, 각 높은 고개 위에, 모든 산 꼭대기에, 모든 푸른 나무 아래에, 무성한 상수리나무 아래 곧 그 우상에게 분향하던 곳에 있으리니 내가 여호와인 줄을 너희가 알리라

6:14 내가 내 손을 그들의 위에 펴서 그가 사는 온 땅 곧 광야에서부터 디블라까지 황량하고 황폐하게 하리니 내가 여호와인 줄을 그들이 알리라

11 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Strike your hands together and stamp your feet and cry out “Alas!” because of all the wicked and detestable practices of the people of Israel, for they will fall by the sword, famine and plague. 12 One who is far away will die of the plague, and one who is near will fall by the sword, and anyone who survives and is spared will die of famine. So will I pour out my wrath on them. 13 And they will know that I am the Lord, when their people lie slain among their idols around their altars, on every high hill and on all the mountaintops, under every spreading tree and every leafy oak—places where they offered fragrant incense to all their idols. 14 And I will stretch out my hand against them and make the land a desolate waste from the desert to Diblah—wherever they live. Then they will know that I am the Lord.’”

제가 과거에 결혼을 하기 전 담임 목사님께 다음과 같이 질문했습니다. “목사님, 사랑하는 사람이 생겨서 가정을 꾸리면 당연히 하나님보다 더 사랑할 우상들이 많이 생기는 건데 왜 하나님이 결혼을 허락하시죠? 그럴바엔 그냥 결혼을 안하는게 낫지 않나요?” 제가 그 당시 ‘하나님 앞에 죄를 지으면 벌을 받는다’라는 생각에 사로잡혀서 뭐를 하든지 겁이 났던 것 같습니다. 가정이 생기면 그들이 나의 우상이되어 하나님보다 더 사랑하게 되는 순간이 당연히 올텐데 그러면 벌을 받을텐데 어차피 지는 싸움을 뭐하러 할 필요가 있나라는 어리석은 논리였어요. 오늘 본문인 6장은 온갖 우상 숭배가 자행된 이스라엘 산을 대상으로 하나님께서 심판을 예고하십니다. 이처럼 과거에서부터 하나님의 언약 백성들과 우상 숭배의 악연은 끊임없이 반복되어져 왔습니다. 비록 우리는 더 이상 산당에서 제사를 지내지는 않지만 일상 생활에서 너무나도 쉽게 하나님 자리에 다른 우상을 놓는 실수를 범함을 고백할 수 있습니다. 예를 들면 돈, 명예, 직장, 성공, 건강, 가정, 나 자신 등이 있는데 이들의 공통점이라면 다 하나님이 주시는 축복이라는 겁니다. 유다 백성들의 잘못을 교훈삼아 우리는 어떻게 하나님의 축복을 우상이 아닌 축복으로 유지하며 살아갈 수 있을지 함께 살펴봅시다.

Before I got married, I once asked my senior pastor this question: “Pastor, if I fall in love and build a family, won’t that inevitably lead me to love something more than God, turning them into idols? Why does God even allow marriage, then? Wouldn’t it be better not to marry at all?” Back then, I was trapped in the mindset of “If I sin against God, I will be punished,” and I was afraid of doing anything. I thought that once I had a family, it was only a matter of time before they would become my idols—people I’d love more than God—and then I’d be punished. It felt like a losing battle, so why even fight it? It was a foolish line of reasoning.

In today’s passage, Ezekiel 6, God proclaims judgment on the mountains of Israel where all kinds of idol worship were taking place. This shows us how the toxic relationship between God’s covenant people and idol worship has repeatedly played out throughout history. Even though we no longer offer sacrifices at pagan shrines, we must confess how easily we replace God with modern idols in our daily lives. These idols can be money, fame, work, success, health, family, or even ourselves. Ironically, all of these things are actually blessings given by God. Let’s reflect on how we can live in a way that keeps God’s blessings as blessings—not idols—by learning from the mistakes of the people of Judah.

1) 우상이란 존재

유다 백성들은 하나님 한 분만으로는 만족하지 못했습니다. 그들은 예루살렘 성전에서 하나님께 제사 드리며 섬겼지만 동시에 바알과 다른 신들에게 분향하며 제단을 쌓았습니다 (렘 7:9-10). 산과 언덕과 시내와 골짜기 곳곳에 우상의 산당들을 세웠습니다 (3절). 하나님은 이들에게 선지자들을 통해 끊임없이 경고하셨고 이들이 돌아오기를 기다렸습니다. 그러나 탐욕에 눈이 멀고 불순종으로 마음이 굳어버린 유다 백성들은 이러한 경고들을 가볍게 여기고 넘겼습니다. 그에 따른 결과로 하나님은 마침내 심판의 칼을 꺼내 들었습니다. 하나님은 이들의 산당을 멸하고, 분향 제단들을 깨뜨려 없애버릴 것입니다 (4절). 그곳에 분향을 드린 자들의 결말은 죽음이고 그들의 해골은 제단 사방에 흩뿌려 질 것입니다 (5절). 그리고 이러한 심판은 산당에만 미치는 것이 아니라 그들의 삶 전체로 번져 그들이 거주하는 모든 성읍을 황폐하게 될 것입니다 (6a절). 이러한 강력한 심판이 우상 숭배자들에게 내려지는 이유는 우상이라는 존재는 하나님에게 있어서 가장 큰 모욕이기 때문입니다. 우상을 숭배한다는 것은 하나님의 신실하심, 능력, 전능하심, 선하심을 믿지 못한다는 선전포고입니다. 그들은 물질적 풍요를 원했고 하나님을 믿고 기다리는 것보다 세상적인 방법을 통해 스스로 성취하는 방법을 택했던 것입니다. 

1) What Is an Idol?

The people of Judah were not satisfied with God alone. Though they worshipped Him in the temple of Jerusalem, they also offered incense and built altars to Baal and other gods (Jeremiah 7:9–10). They set up shrines for idols throughout the hills, valleys, and rivers (v. 3). God continually sent prophets to warn them and waited for their return. But Judah, blinded by greed and hardened by disobedience, took His warnings lightly. Eventually, God drew the sword of judgment. He declared He would destroy their high places and smash their incense altars (v. 4). Those who burned incense would die, and their bones would be scattered around their altars (v. 5). This judgment would not be limited to the high places—it would spread through all of their cities and ruin every part of their lives (v. 6a). Why such a harsh punishment for idol worship? Because to God, idols are the greatest insult. Worshiping an idol is like declaring that God is not trustworthy, not powerful, not sovereign, and not good. The people desired material prosperity and chose self-fulfillment through worldly methods over trusting and waiting on God.

2) 여호와의 존재

이러한 심판이 이루어지는 하나님의 목적을 우리는 알 수 있습니다. 7, 10, 13, 14절에 반복적으로 나오는 말씀입니다. “내가 여호와인 줄을 너희가 알게 하려 함이라.” 우상들을 완전히 멸하심으로 말미암아 우상들의 현실적인 무능력함을 드러내실 것입니다. 유다 백성들이 믿고 의지하던 우상들은 그들이 도움을 구할 때 아무런 능력도 끼칠 수 없을 것입니다. 또한 하나님은 모두를 죽이지 않고 일부를 살려두시어 이들이 심판의 증인이 되게 하십니다. 이렇게 심판에서 살아남은 자들은 처참한 현실 앞에 스스로를 한탄하고 철저히 후회할 것입니다 (9절). 그리고 말씀대로 다 이루어진 심판을 통해 여호와가 언약의 하나님이심을 깨닫게 될 것입니다 (10절). 그러나 우리는 여기에서 희망을 발견합니다. 정의로운 하나님께서 죄의 대가로 가혹한 심판을 내리지만서도 모두를 죽여 완전히 유다 백성들을 없애시지는 않습니다. 오히려 이들이 죄를 깨닫고 회개하며 하나님이 언약의 여호와이심을 인정하게 함으로서 그들이 다시 하나님의 자녀로 돌아오게 하십니다. “그런즉 그들이 그들의 원수들의 땅에 있을 때에 내가 그들을 내버리지 아니하며 미워하지 아니하며 아주 멸하지 아니하고 그들과 맺은 내 언약을 폐하지 아니하리니 나는 여호와 그들의 하나님이 됨이니라” (레 26:44). 그러니 우리가 잘못을 깨닫고 회개하며 뉘우칠 수 있는 은혜가 우리에게 임해야 합니다. 우리를 끝까지 포기하지 않으시는 하나님입니다.

2) Who Is the LORD?

But even in judgment, God reveals His purpose: it is repeated in verses 7, 10, 13, and 14—

“Then you will know that I am the LORD.” By destroying the idols, God exposes how powerless they truly are. The idols the people trusted will prove useless when they seek help. God doesn’t destroy everyone—He leaves a remnant. These survivors will witness the judgment and mourn over their sins with deep regret (v. 9). Through the fulfillment of these prophecies, they will realize that the LORD is truly the covenant-keeping God (v. 10). This is where we find hope. Though a just God brings harsh judgment for sin, He does not completely wipe out His people. Instead, He desires that they recognize their sin, repent, and return to Him. “Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them or abhor them so as to destroy them completely, breaking my covenant with them. I am the LORD their God” (Leviticus 26:44). Therefore, we need to have grace of awakening and repentance for our sins. God is the One who never gives up on us.

결론적으로 유다 백성들은 하나님이 이미 베풀어주신 축복으로는 만족하지 못했습니다. 이러한 그들의 욕심은 그들이 하나님의 백성이라는 정체성을 잊게 만들고 세상적인 방법을 의지하게 만들었습니다. 언제 축복이 우상으로 바뀔까요? 그 존재들의 본래 가진 목적이 상실된 때입니다. 예를 들어 돈은 우리가 살아감에 있어 필요한 수단입니다. 그리고 우리의 필요를 아시고 공급해주시는 분도 하나님이십니다. 그러나 돈이 수단이 아니라 목적이 되어버리면 문제가 됩니다. 복을 얻기위해 하나님을 믿는 기복신앙의 자세는 옳지 않습니다. 무엇보다 가장 중요한 정체성은 우리가 하나님의 자녀라는 것입니다. 우리가 하나님의 영광을 위해 지음 받은 존재라는 사실을 잊지 않고 항상 하나님을 삶에 우선순위로 놓는다면 우리는 우상 숭배의 위험에서 벗어나 자유롭게 하나님이 허락하신 축복을 누리며 살 수 있습니다. 

제가 앞에 말한 결혼에 있어서는 우리 가정의 왕은 예수님이시다를 기본으로하여 매 순간 남편보다 아내보다 자녀보다 예수님을 우선으로 하려 노력하고, 그러지 못했을 때는 빠르게 회개하면 될 줄로 믿습니다. 오래 참으시고 기다려주시는 하나님이심을 믿습니다. 그러니 하나님을 벌 주려고 기다리고 있는 이상한 아버지로 생각하면 안되는 거지요. 

또한 이미 주신 축복이 있는데 그걸 축복으로 보지 못하고 만족하지 못하여 더 많은 것을 바라지는 않는지 돌아봐야 합니다. “그러므로 땅에 있는 지체를 죽이라 곧 음란과 부정과 사욕과 악한 정욕과 탐심이니 탐심은 우상 숭배니라” (골 3:5). 결국 잠언에서 “모든 지킬 만한 것 중에 더욱 네 마음을 지키라 (잠 4:23a)”라고 나온 것처럼 우리의 마음 곧 중심이 중요합니다. 우리 마음 속에 도사리고 있는 탐심의 유혹을 하루하루 살피고 회개하며 예수님으로 충만해지는 여러분들 되시기를 기도드립니다.

Ultimately, the people of Judah were not satisfied with the blessings God had already given them. Their greed caused them to forget their identity as God’s people and led them to rely on worldly methods instead. When does a blessing become an idol? It happens when the original purpose of that blessing is lost. For example, money is a necessary means for living. And it is God who knows our needs and provides for them. But when money stops being a tool and becomes the goal, it becomes a problem. The mindset of believing in God just to gain blessings—a prosperity-driven faith—is not right. Above all, our most important identity is that we are children of God. If we remember that we were created for God's glory and continually put Him first in our lives, we can escape the dangers of idolatry and freely enjoy the blessings God allows us.

As for the question I raised earlier about marriage—if we start with the foundational truth that Jesus is the King of our home, then we can strive every moment to place Him above our spouse, our children, and even ourselves. And when we fail to do so, we can quickly repent. I believe that is enough. Because our God is patient and long-suffering—He waits for us. That’s why we must not think of God as some strange father who is just waiting to punish us.

We also need to ask ourselves: Do I already have blessings, but fail to recognize them as such, and instead long for more out of dissatisfaction? “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed, which is idolatry.” (Colossians 3:5) In the end, as Proverbs says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23a)

Your heart—your inner life—is what truly matters. I pray that each of you will examine and repent daily of the temptations of greed lurking in your heart, and be filled more and more with Jesus.
