5:1 너 인자야 너는 날카로운 칼을 가져다가 삭도로 삼아 네 머리털과 수염을 깎아서 저울로 달아 나누어 두라

5:2 그 성읍을 에워싸는 날이 차거든 너는 터럭 삼분의 일은 성읍 안에서 불사르고 삼분의 일은 성읍 사방에서 칼로 치고 또 삼분의 일은 바람에 흩으라 내가 그 뒤를 따라 칼을 빼리라

5:3 너는 터럭 중에서 조금을 네 옷자락에 싸고

5:4 또 그 가운데에서 얼마를 불에 던져 사르라 그 속에서 불이 이스라엘 온 족속에게로 나오리라

1 “Now, son of man, take a sharp sword and use it as a barber’s razor to shave your head and your beard. Then take a set of scales and divide up the hair. 2 When the days of your siege come to an end, burn a third of the hair inside the city. Take a third and strike it with the sword all around the city. And scatter a third to the wind. For I will pursue them with drawn sword. 3 But take a few hairs and tuck them away in the folds of your garment. 4 Again, take a few of these and throw them into the fire and burn them up. A fire will spread from there to all Israel.

5:5 주 여호와께서 이와 같이 이르시되 이것이 곧 예루살렘이라 내가 그를 이방인 가운데에 두어 나라들이 둘러 있게 하였거늘

5:6 그가 내 규례를 거슬러서 이방인보다 악을 더 행하며 내 율례도 그리함이 그를 둘러 있는 나라들보다 더하니 이는 그들이 내 규례를 버리고 내 율례를 행하지 아니하였음이니라

5 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: This is Jerusalem, which I have set in the center of the nations, with countries all around her. 6 Yet in her wickedness she has rebelled against my laws and decrees more than the nations and countries around her. She has rejected my laws and has not followed my decrees.

5:7 그러므로 나 주 여호와가 말하노라 너희 요란함이 너희를 둘러싸고 있는 이방인들보다 더하여 내 율례를 행하지 아니하며 내 규례를 지키지 아니하고 너희를 둘러 있는 이방인들의 규례대로도 행하지 아니하였느니라

7 “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: You have been more unruly than the nations around you and have not followed my decrees or kept my laws. You have not even conformed to the standards of the nations around you.

5:8 그러므로 나 주 여호와가 말하노라 나 곧 내가 너를 치며 이방인의 목전에서 너에게 벌을 내리되

5:9 네 모든 가증한 일로 말미암아 내가 전무후무하게 네게 내릴지라

5:10 그리한즉 네 가운데에서 아버지가 아들을 잡아먹고 아들이 그 아버지를 잡아먹으리라 내가 벌을 네게 내리고 너희 중에 남은 자를 다 사방에 흩으리라

5:11 그러므로 나 주 여호와가 말하노라 내가 나의 삶을 두고 맹세하노니 네가 모든 미운 물건과 모든 가증한 일로 내 성소를 더럽혔은즉 나도 너를 아끼지 아니하며 긍휼을 베풀지 아니하고 미약하게 하리니

5:12 너희 가운데에서 삼분의 일은 전염병으로 죽으며 기근으로 멸망할 것이요 삼분의 일은 너의 사방에서 칼에 엎드러질 것이며 삼분의 일은 내가 사방에 흩어 버리고 또 그 뒤를 따라 가며 칼을 빼리라

8 “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself am against you, Jerusalem, and I will inflict punishment on you in the sight of the nations. 9 Because of all your detestable idols, I will do to you what I have never done before and will never do again. 10 Therefore in your midst parents will eat their children, and children will eat their parents. I will inflict punishment on you and will scatter all your survivors to the winds. 11 Therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, because you have defiled my sanctuary with all your vile images and detestable practices, I myself will shave you; I will not look on you with pity or spare you. 12 A third of your people will die of the plague or perish by famine inside you; a third will fall by the sword outside your walls; and a third I will scatter to the winds and pursue with drawn sword.

5:13 이와 같이 내 노가 다한즉 그들을 향한 분이 풀려서 내 마음이 가라앉으리라 내 분이 그들에게 다한즉 나 여호와가 열심으로 말한 줄을 그들이 알리라

13 “Then my anger will cease and my wrath against them will subside, and I will be avenged. And when I have spent my wrath on them, they will know that I the Lord have spoken in my zeal.

5:14 내가 이르되 또 너를 황무하게 하고 너를 둘러싸고 있는 이방인들 중에서 모든 지나가는 자의 목전에 모욕 거리가 되게 하리니

5:15 내 노와 분과 중한 책망으로 네게 벌을 내린즉 너를 둘러싸고 있는 이방인들에게 네가 수치와 조롱 거리가 되고 두려움과 경고가 되리라 나 여호와의 말이니라

5:16 내가 멸망하게 하는 기근의 독한 화살을 너희에게 보내되 기근을 더하여 너희가 의뢰하는 양식을 끊을 것이라

5:17 내가 기근과 사나운 짐승을 너희에게 보내 외롭게 하고 너희 가운데에 전염병과 살륙이 일어나게 하고 또 칼이 너희에게 임하게 하리라 나 여호와의 말이니라

14 “I will make you a ruin and a reproach among the nations around you, in the sight of all who pass by. 15 You will be a reproach and a taunt, a warning and an object of horror to the nations around you when I inflict punishment on you in anger and in wrath and with stinging rebuke. I the Lord have spoken. 16 When I shoot at you with my deadly and destructive arrows of famine, I will shoot to destroy you. I will bring more and more famine upon you and cut off your supply of food. 17 I will send famine and wild beasts against you, and they will leave you childless. Plague and bloodshed will sweep through you, and I will bring the sword against you. I the Lord have spoken.”

                예수님께서는 마태복음 5:14 말씀에 “너희는 세상의 빛이라”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 빛으로 우리를 부르신 것은 바로 모든 사람에게 그 빛을 비추기 위함이셨지요. 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성들을 시내 산에서 부르시고 그들과 언약을 맺으실 때에도 같은 말씀을 하셨습니다. 출애굽기 19장 5-6절에서 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “세계가 다 내게 속하였나니 너희가 내 말을 잘 듣고 내 언약을 지키면 너희는 열국 중에서 내 소유가 되겠고 너희가 내게 대하여 제사장 나라가 되며 거룩한 백성이 되리라.” 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성들을 제사장 나라, 거룩한 백성으로 부르셔서 열방과 이방인들에게 하나님을 드러내게 하시려하였던 것이지요. 이들을 빛으로 부르셔서 하나님의 빛을 온 세상에 비추려 하셨던 것입니다. 그러나 이스라엘 백성들은 그 빛을 잃어버렸습니다. 빛을 잃어버린 정도가 아니라 아예 어둠이 되어버렸습니다. 이방인들보다 더 악을 행하고 하나님의 규례를 지키는 정도가 아니라 주변 나라들의 규례조차도 제대로 지키지 않는 그야말로 어둠의 자식이 되어버렸습니다. 그런 그들을 하나님께서는 심판의 자리로 부르십니다. 그리고 그들의 파멸을 예언하십니다. 오늘은 어둠이 되어버린 빛에 대한 심판이라는 제목으로 말씀을 전하기 원합니다.

In Matthew 5:14, Jesus said, “You are the light of the world.” He called us to be light so that we might shine that light for all people. God made a similar declaration when He called the people of Israel at Mount Sinai and made a covenant with them. In Exodus 19:5-6, He declared: "Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, you shall be My treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is Mine; and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation."

God called Israel to be a priestly kingdom, a holy nation, so that they might reveal Him to the nations and to the Gentiles. He called them to be a light, to shine His light upon the entire world. However, the people of Israel lost that light. They didn't just lose their light; they completely became darkness. They committed more evil than the surrounding nations, and they not only failed to keep God's statutes, but they didn't even properly follow the statutes of the nations around them. They truly became children of darkness.

And so, God calls them to a place of judgment. He foretells their destruction. Today, I want to preach on the topic, "The Judgment of Light Turned into Darkness."

                1-4절은 어제의 세가지 행동으로 보여주시는 징조에 이어 오늘은 그 네번째 징조를 말씀하십니다. 머리털과 수염을 삭도로 깎아서 삼등분을 하여 보관하라고 하십니다. 이스라엘 사람들에게 머리털과 수염을 깎는 것은 애통과 수치를 표현할 때 하는 행동입니다. 그러나 이 백성은 애통도, 수치도 모르며 회개도 하지 않으니, 하나님께서 심판으로서 직접 그들에게 애통과 수치를 겪게 하실 것이라는 것을 보여주시는 것이지요. 이렇게 삼등분으로 보관하였던 머리털과 수염을 예루살렘 성이 포위 될 때에 각각 성읍 안에서 불사르고, 성읍 사방에서 칼로 치고, 나머지 삼분의 일은 바람에 흩으라고 말씀하십니다. 이에 대한 해석은 12절에서 정확하게 말씀하시지요. 하나님의 심판이 임하여 삼분의 일은 전염병과 기근으로 멸망할 것이고 삼분의 일은 전쟁으로 칼에 엎드러질 것이며 삼분의 일은 사방에 포로로 흩어지며 하나님의 심판이 칼로 그들을 뒤쫓을 것임을 말씀하십니다. 이 경고를 5장을 마치는16-17절에서도 다시 한 번 학인하십니다. 멸망하게 하는 기근의 독한 화살로 식량 공급이 끊어지며 기근과 사나운 짐승으로 그들의 자녀들을 해칠 것이며 전염병과 살륙이 일어나 칼이 그들에게 임하게 될 것입니다. 이 모든 것을 ‘나 여호와의 말이니라’ 라고 하시며 확정하십니다. 같은 말씀을 오늘 말씀에 세번을 반복하시고 확정하시는 것은 하나님께서 그 마음을 정하셨다는 것이지요. 우리는 이미 이들이 하나님께 오랜기간 범죄하여 이런 심판을 불러온 것을 알고 있습니다. 그러나 하나님께서는 좀 더 구체적으로 이들이 어떠한 죄악으로 하나님의 진노를 불러일으켰는지 말씀하십니다. 그것이 5-17절의 내용입니다.

The Prophetic Signs of Judgment

In Ezekiel 5:1-4, following the three prophetic actions we saw previously, today's passage reveals a fourth symbolic act. God commands Ezekiel to take a sharp sword, use it as a barber's razor, and shave his hair and beard. Then, he is to divide it into three equal parts and keep them. For the people of Israel, shaving one's head and beard was a profound expression of grief, mourning, and shame. But this people had no grief, no shame, and no repentance. So, God was showing them that He Himself would bring them to experience that very grief and shame through judgment.

The Lord then instructs Ezekiel to deal with the three portions of hair and beard when Jerusalem is besieged: one-third is to be burned within the city, one-third is to be struck with a sword around the city, and the remaining third is to be scattered to the wind. The precise interpretation of this is given in verse 12. God’s judgment will come, and one-third will perish by plague and famine, one-third will fall by the sword in war, and one-third will be scattered to the four winds, with God's judgment pursuing them with a sword.

This warning is confirmed again at the end of Chapter 5, in verses 16-17. A deadly arrow of famine will cut off their food supply; famine and savage beasts will harm their children; plague and bloodshed will erupt, and the sword will come upon them. All these things are declared with the emphatic phrase, "I, the LORD, have spoken." This repeated affirmation, three times in today's passage, emphasizes that God has set His heart on this judgment. We already know that Israel's persistent sin over a long period brought about this judgment. But God specifies in greater detail what kind of wickedness provoked His wrath, which is the content of verses 5-17.

                5절의 첫 시작은 이렇습니다. “주 여호와께서 이와 같이 이르시되.” 이는 하나님의 신탁이 시작되었다는 말입니다. 즉, 하나님의 의지가 무엇인지 에스겔을 통해 직접 알린다는 말씀입니다. 5-17절 까지의 구성으로 보았을 때 이는 새로운 형식의 도입부임을 알 수 있습니다. 무슨 형식인가? 재판의 형식입니다.  5-6절은 하나님께서 이들 이스라엘 백성을 고소하십니다. 그리고 7-17절까지 7절, “그러므로 나 주 여호와가 말하노라.” 8절, “그러므로 나 주 여호와가 말하노라.” 11절, “그러므로 나 주 여호와가 말하노라” 하나님께서 심판을 선언하시는 장면입니다. 하나님께서 이들을 고소하시고 그 심판을 선언 하시는 장면이 반복됩니다. 그렇다면 하나님께서 반복해서 이들을 고소하시는 것이 무엇입니까? 5절입니다. “내가 그를 이방인 가운데에 두어 나라들이 둘러 있게 하였거늘” 하나님께서 의도적으로 이스라엘을 이방인 나라들 가운데에 두시고 그 이방나라들로 이스라엘을 둘러싸게 하셨습니다. 왜 그렇게 하셨습니까? 우리가 서론에서 함께 말씀을 나누었듯이 이스라엘로 이 모든 이방 나라들에게 제사장 나라의 본을 보이시기 위함이었습니다. 이방 나라들의 어둠을 그들이 가지고 있는 빛으로 비춰주기를 원하셨습니다. 그러나 6절에 뭐라고 하십니까? “그가 내 규례를 거슬러서 이방인보다 악을 행하며 내 율례도 그리함이 그를 둘러 있는 나라들 보다 더하니” 7절에서는 뭐라고 하십니까? “내 규례를 지키지 아니하고 너희를 둘러 있는 이방인들의 규례대로도 행하지 아니하였느니라” 이들이 하나님의 백성으로서 이방 나라들에게 빛을 비추는 것이 아니라 오히려 이들이 이방나라들 보다 더 규례를 지키지 아니하고 심지어는 이방인들의 규례대로도 행하지 아니하였다라고 하십니다. 빛으로 부른 이스라엘이 오히려 이방인들을 흑암으로 몰고 가고 있는 것입니다. 5-17절은 이방인들에 대한 언급이 반복해서 나옵니다. 그러나 안타깝게도 그 언급은 대부분 그들을 이방인들의 눈 앞에서 심판 하시겠다고 선언하실 때 입니다. 8절 이방인의 목전에서, 14절 이방인들 중에서 모든 지나가는 자의 목전에, 15절 “너를 둘러싸고 있는 이방인들에게 네가 수치와 조롱거리가 되고 두려움과 경고가 되리라.” 하나님의 원래 계획은 이것이 아니었습니다. 이들로 하여금 빛의 자녀 되어 그들을 둘러싸고 있는 이방 나라들에게 하나님의 통치가 어떠한 것인지를 보여주는 것이었습니다. 창세기 22:18절에 아브라함의 후손인 이들로 “말미암아 천하 만민이 복을 받으리니 이는 네가 나의 말을 준행하였음이니라” 라고 하시지 않았습니까? 이들을 통해 모든 이방 나라들이 복을 받을 수 없게 되자 하나님께서는 차선을 선택하십니다. 그것은 이스라엘로 하여금 이방 나라들에게 두려움과 경고의 본보기로 삼으신 것입니다. 그래서 9절처럼 전무후무한 하나님의 심판을 그들에게 허락하시는 것입니다.

The Divine Indictment

Verse 5 begins: "Thus says the Lord GOD." This signals the commencement of a divine oracle, meaning God is directly revealing His will through Ezekiel. The structure of verses 5-17 clearly indicates a new type of introduction. What kind of form is this? It's the form of a trial.

In verses 5-6, God brings His accusation against the people of Israel. Then, from verses 7-17, we hear the repeated declaration of judgment: Verse 7, "Therefore thus says the Lord GOD," Verse 8, "Therefore thus says the Lord GOD," and Verse 11, "Therefore as I live, declares the Lord GOD." God repeatedly accuses them and declares their judgment.

So, what is God repeatedly accusing them of? Verse 5 states: "I placed her in the midst of the nations, with countries all around her." God intentionally placed Israel among the Gentile nations and surrounded them with these nations. Why did He do this? As we discussed in the introduction, it was to enable Israel to be a model of a priestly nation to all these Gentile peoples. He wanted them to illuminate the darkness of the Gentile nations with the light they possessed.

But what does verse 6 say? "But she has rebelled against My ordinances more wickedly than the nations, and against My statutes more than the countries that are around her." And what about verse 7? "You have not walked in My statutes or kept My ordinances, but have acted according to the customs of the nations that are around you."

Instead of being God's people, shining light to the Gentile nations, they acted more wickedly than the Gentiles. They not only failed to keep God's ordinances but didn't even follow the customs of the surrounding nations. Israel, called to be a light, was instead leading the Gentiles deeper into darkness! The word "nations" is repeated throughout verses 5-17. Sadly, most of these mentions are when God declares He will judge them "in the sight of the nations" (v. 8), or "in the midst of the nations" (v. 14), or that they will become "a reproach and a taunt, a warning and a horror to the nations all around you" (v. 15).

God's original plan was not this. His desire was for them to be children of light, showing the surrounding nations what God's reign was like. Did He not say in Genesis 22:18, concerning Abraham's descendants, "And in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice"? When these people failed to bring blessing to all the nations, God chose an alternative path. He made Israel a terrifying and warning example for the Gentile nations. And so, as verse 9 states, He allowed an unprecedented judgment to come upon them.

                말씀을 맺습니다. 하나님은 이스라엘이 하나님의 백성이 되기를 원하셨습니다. 그들을 통하여 만민이 복을 받기를 원하셨습니다. 그러나 맛을 잃은 소금이 아무 쓸 데 없어 버려지는 것처럼 그들은 오히려 이방인들 보다도 악을 행하여 하나님의 심판을 피할 수 없게 되었습니다. 그러나 비록 그들은 하나님의 심판 가운데 있을지라도 하나님의 만민을 향한 계획은 계속되었습니다. 그들의 심판을 본보기로 삼아 모든 민족들에게 두려움과 경고로 삼으신 것입니다. 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 하나님의 성도로 부르심을 받은 우리이지만 우리가 세상의 빛이 되지 못하고 어둠이 된다면 하나님께서는 우리를 통하여 세상에 두려움과 경고의 본보기로 삼으실지도 모릅니다. 늘 깨어있어 등경위의 등불처럼 하나님의 빛을 밝히 비취시는 성도 여러분들 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 

A Call to Reflection for Believers Today

To conclude: God desired Israel to be His people. He wanted all nations to be blessed through them. However, just as salt that has lost its taste is good for nothing and is thrown out, they acted more wickedly than the Gentiles and could not escape God's judgment. Yet, even in their judgment, God's plan for all nations continued. He used their judgment as an example, making them a source of fear and warning to all peoples.

It is the same for us today. We have been called as God's holy people, but if we fail to be the light of the world and instead become darkness, God might use us as a fearful and warning example to the world. May we always be awake and alert, shining God's light brightly, like a lamp on a stand, becoming true lights for the world. I pray this in the name of the Lord.
