Ezekiel’s Task as Watchman

16 At the end of seven days the word of the Lord came to me: 17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. 18 When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. 19 But if you do warn the wicked person and they do not turn from their wickedness or from their evil ways, they will die for their sin; but you will have saved yourself.

20 “Again, when a righteous person turns from their righteousness and does evil, and I put a stumbling block before them, they will die. Since you did not warn them, they will die for their sin. The righteous things that person did will not be remembered, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. 21 But if you do warn the righteous person not to sin and they do not sin, they will surely live because they took warning, and you will have saved yourself.”

22 The hand of the Lord was on me there, and he said to me, “Get up and go out to the plain, and there I will speak to you.” 23 So I got up and went out to the plain. And the glory of the Lord was standing there, like the glory I had seen by the Kebar River, and I fell facedown.

24 Then the Spirit came into me and raised me to my feet. He spoke to me and said: “Go, shut yourself inside your house. 25 And you, son of man, they will tie with ropes; you will be bound so that you cannot go out among the people. 26 I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth so that you will be silent and unable to rebuke them, for they are a rebellious people. 27 But when I speak to you, I will open your mouth and you shall say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says.’ Whoever will listen let them listen, and whoever will refuse let them refuse; for they are a rebellious people.

Ezekiel, by the Chebar Canal, witnessed the heavens open and saw the glorious vision of God seated on His throne. Overwhelmed by the splendor of God's glory, all he could do was prostrate himself and listen to God's voice. Then, God directly called Ezekiel by name, His Spirit entered him, and lifted him to his feet. God's voice then declared that He was sending Ezekiel as a prophet to a rebellious people. This sudden, overwhelming call left Ezekiel trembling with fear, bewildered for seven days. And that brings us to today's passage.

After those seven days of confusion, the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel again. This time, God appointed him as a watchman for the house of Israel. God commanded him to warn them on His behalf. Today's text speaks about the duty and responsibility of Ezekiel, the watchman. But here's the perplexing part: after clearly stating, "You are to warn them on My behalf," God then confines Ezekiel to his house and silences him. The reason given? "For they are a rebellious house." Today, I want us to reflect on this passage under the title, "Ezekiel the Watchman and the Rebellious House."

The Watchman Ezekiel

First, let's talk about Ezekiel the watchman. Verses 16-17, as I mentioned in the introduction, describe God re-engaging with Ezekiel and appointing him as a watchman for the house of Israel. His duty as a watchman was to hear the word from God's mouth and, on God's behalf, warn the people of Israel. God meticulously explained his duty and responsibility by giving four hypothetical situations.

The first example, in verse 18, describes a situation where God tells a wicked person, "You shall surely die," but the watchman fails to warn that wicked person. In such a case, the wicked person will die in their sin, but God declares that He will require their blood from the watchman's hand. This may sound a bit strange if you think about it. If someone is wicked, they might not turn from their wicked way regardless of whether they receive a warning, right? In fact, the second example in verse 19 illustrates this perfectly: if the watchman warns the wicked, and they do not turn from their way, they will die in their sin, but the watchman will have saved his life. This is what we would consider the logical outcome.

However, God's first example emphasizes that even if someone is wicked, the watchman must warn them. Otherwise, the watchman is responsible for the wicked person's death in their sin. What does this tell us? It means God provides an opportunity even for the wicked to turn from their evil ways. Furthermore, it implies that even a wicked person, upon receiving the watchman's warning, might indeed turn from their wicked path and save their life. This clearly illustrates that the watchman's role in delivering God's message is a matter of life and death, an extremely weighty task.

Let's look at the third and fourth examples, which concern the righteous. One might think a righteous person wouldn't need the watchman's warning. And unlike the wicked, a righteous person would likely not commit sin if warned. Indeed, the fourth example in verse 21 states that if the watchman warns a righteous person, and they heed the warning, both the righteous person will live, and the watchman will preserve his soul. This is a positive outcome.

But the third example, in verse 20, is a little different. Let's read it together: "Again, when a righteous person turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I lay a stumbling block before him, he shall die. Because you have not warned him, he shall die for his sin, and his righteous deeds that he has done shall not be remembered, but his blood I will require at your hand."

This passage tells us that even a righteous person can turn from their righteousness and commit sin. And even a righteous person cannot escape the consequence of death in such a case. Doesn't it say, "his righteous deeds that he has done shall not be remembered"? Even if someone is righteous, if the watchman fails to warn them, they can face death, and God will require their blood from the watchman's hand. This is an immense responsibility.

What is God trying to communicate to Ezekiel through these four examples? It's that as a watchman, he must warn them, regardless of whether they are wicked or righteous, and in every situation. This is the duty and responsibility entrusted to the watchman.

Now, after meticulously explaining the watchman's duties and responsibilities, God comes to Ezekiel again, confines him to his house, and makes him unable to speak.

Look at verses 24-25: "Go, shut yourself inside your house." And, "They will bind you with ropes so that you cannot go out among them." The very one who commanded him to speak God's word to anyone, in any situation, is now confining him to his house, preventing him from going out. How can he fulfill his role as a watchman then? And it gets even more perplexing in verse 26: God even silences him completely. "And I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth, so that you shall be mute and unable to rebuke them."

Why would God call him to be a watchman, then place him under house arrest, and even seal his lips within his own home? God explains the reason: "For they are a rebellious house." We recall that earlier, God commanded the watchman to warn even the wicked so they might turn from their evil ways and gain life. However, for this rebellious house, God does not allow direct rebuke. It's because warning them might lead them to abandon their rebellion and receive life. Therefore, God's act of confining Ezekiel and making him silent paradoxically emphasizes that they can by no means escape God's judgment.

However, God does not permanently silence Ezekiel. There will be a time when God opens his mouth again. That time is when God speaks. Let's read verse 27 together: "But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth, and you shall say to them, 'Thus says the Lord God.' Let him who hears, hear; and let him who refuses to hear, refuse; for they are a rebellious house."

At the very moment God speaks, the watchman must deliver the message. This message, as we discussed, will likely be one of God's judgment. It will be a message of life and death. But because they are a rebellious house, those who refuse to hear will still refuse to hear, even then.

Conclusion

To conclude, Ezekiel, called by God to be a watchman, must deliver God's message when God speaks. However, there is a specific time for God to speak. Conversely, this means that when we hear a warning message from God, we still have an opportunity. Even the righteous, and certainly the wicked, can still turn if they hear and accept that word.

But if the watchman is silent, if we are hearing no warning, then that might be the time for us to examine ourselves and consider if we have become a rebellious house. Receiving a word of warning from God is, in itself, a grace.

I pray that by reading the Word, listening to sermons, and through worship and prayer, you will hear the watchman's voice, be warned, and preserve your lives. Amen.
