20250721 [새벽묵상] 무엇을 먹고 무엇을 전할 것인가? | What shall I eat and what shall I preach? (겔/Ezk 3:1~15)

3:1 또 그가 내게 이르시되 인자야 너는 발견한 것을 먹으라 너는 이 두루마리를 먹고 가서 이스라엘 족속에게 말하라 하시기로

3:2 내가 입을 벌리니 그가 그 두루 마리를 내게 먹이시며

1 And he said to me, “Son of man, eat what is before you, eat this scroll; then go and speak to the people of Israel.” 2 So I opened my mouth, and he gave me the scroll to eat.

3:3 내게 이르시되 인자야 내가 네게 주는 이 두루마리를 네 배에 넣으며 네 창자에 채우라 하시기에 내가 먹으니 그것이 내 입에서 달기가 꿀 같더라

3 Then he said to me, “Son of man, eat this scroll I am giving you and fill your stomach with it.” So I ate it, and it tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth.

3:4 그가 또 내게 이르시되 인자야 이스라엘 족속에게 가서 내 말로 그들에게 고하라

3:5 너를 언어가 다르거나 말이 어려운 백성에게 보내는 것이 아니요 이스라엘 족속에게 보내는 것이라

3:6 너를 언어가 다르거나 말이 어려워 네가 그들의 말을 알아 듣지 못할 나라들에게 보내는 것이 아니니라 내가 너를 그들에게 보냈다면 그들은 정녕 네 말을 들었으리라

3:7 그러나 이스라엘 족속은 이마가 굳고 마음이 굳어 네 말을 듣고자 아니하리니 이는 내 말을 듣고자 아니함이니라

3:8 보라 내가 그들의 얼굴을 마주 보도록 네 얼굴을 굳게 하였고 그들의 이마를 마주보도록 네 이마를 굳게 하였으되

3:9 네 이마를 화석보다 굳은 금강석 같이 하였으니 그들이 비록 반역하는 족속이라도 두려워하지 말며 그들의 얼굴을 무서워하지 말라 하시니라

4 He then said to me: “Son of man, go now to the people of Israel and speak my words to them. 5 You are not being sent to a people of obscure speech and strange language, but to the people of Israel— 6 not to many peoples of obscure speech and strange language, whose words you cannot understand. Surely if I had sent you to them, they would have listened to you. 7 But the people of Israel are not willing to listen to you because they are not willing to listen to me, for all the Israelites are hardened and obstinate. 8 But I will make you as unyielding and hardened as they are. 9 I will make your forehead like the hardest stone, harder than flint. Do not be afraid of them or terrified by them, though they are a rebellious people.”

3:10 또 내게 이르시되 인자야 내가 네게 이를 모든 말을 너는 마음으로 받으며 귀로 듣고

3:11 사로잡힌 네 민족에게로 가서 그들이 듣든지 아니 듣든지 그들에게 고하여 이르기를 주 여호와의 말씀이 이러하시다 하라

10 And he said to me, “Son of man, listen carefully and take to heart all the words I speak to you. 11 Go now to your people in exile and speak to them. Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says,’ whether they listen or fail to listen.”

3:12 때에 영이 나를 들어올리시는데 내가 내 뒤에서 크게 울리는 소리를 들으니 찬송할지어 다 여호와의 영광이 그의 처소로부터 나오는도다 하니

3:13 이는 생물들의 날개가 서로 부딪치는 소리와 생물 곁의 바퀴 소리라 크게 울리는 소리더라

3:14 주의 영이 나를 들어올려 데리고 가시는데 내가 근심하고 분한 마음으로 가니 여호와의 권능이 힘있게 나를 감동시키시더라

3:15 이에 내가 델아빕에 이르러 그 사로잡힌 백성 곧 그발 강 가에 거주하는 자들에게 나아가 그 중에서 두려워 떨며 칠 일을 지내니라

12 Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard behind me a loud rumbling sound as the glory of the Lord rose from the place where it was standing. 13 It was the sound of the wings of the living creatures brushing against each other and the sound of the wheels beside them, a loud rumbling sound. 14 The Spirit then lifted me up and took me away, and I went in bitterness and in the anger of my spirit, with the strong hand of the Lord on me. 15 I came to the exiles who lived at Tel Aviv near the Kebar River. And there, where they were living, I sat among them for seven days—deeply distressed.

오늘 본문의 공간적인 배경은 그발 강가 텔아빕입니다. 그발 강은 바벨론에서 평행하여 흐르는 두 큰 강인 티그리스와 유프라테스를 연결해주는 지류인데, 농사를 위해 인공적으로 끌어들인 관개용 운하입니다.

텔아빕은 바벨론의 포로로 잡혀간 유대인들이 거주하던 지역으로 홍수로 폐허가 된 곳, 홍수의 언덕이라는 의미를 가지고 있습니다. 당시에 척박했던 유대인 포로의 삶을 충분히 예측할 수 있는 지명입니다.

1978년 Boney M이 리메이크하여 선풍적인 인기를 끌었던  바빌론 강 Rivers of Babylon 은 시편 137편을 그대로 가사로 쓴 팝송입니다. 시편 137편은 다음과 같이 시작합니다.

우리가 바벨론의 여러 강변 거기에 앉아서 시온을 기억하며 울었도다 (시 137:1)

여기서 말하는 강변이 아마도 그발 강 텔아빕이 아닐까 생각합니다. 눈물 없이는 지낼 수 없는, 고향에서 수만리 떨어진 곳, 말과 먹을 것도 다른 바벨론에서 유대인들은 삶의 고통을 노래로 승화시킨 것입니다.

The geographical setting of today’s passage is Tel Abib by the Kebar River. The Kebar River is a canal that connects the two major rivers of Babylon—the Tigris and the Euphrates—running parallel to them. It was an artificial irrigation channel drawn in for agricultural purposes.

Tel Abib was a settlement area for the Jewish exiles taken to Babylon. The name means “hill of the flood” or “ruin by flood,” reflecting the desolate and devastated condition of the place. From this, we can reasonably infer the harsh and barren life endured by the Jewish captives.

The 1978 remake of Rivers of Babylon by Boney M became a sensational hit. The lyrics are directly taken from Psalm 137, which begins:

The rivers mentioned here are likely referring to the Kebar River in Tel Abib. It was a place where tears were inevitable—a land far from home, where even the language and food were foreign. In Babylon, the Jewish exiles transformed their sorrow into song.

무엇을 먹을 것인가 (1~3절)

요즘 현대인들은 먹는 것에 지대한 관심을 보입니다. SNS가 활성화되면서 사람들은 자신이 먹은 맛있는 음식이나 특이한 음식, 특별한 음식들을 소개하기에 분주합니다. 또한 사람들은 그런 영상을 보면서 대리 만족을 하기도합니다.

이런 문화로서 먹거리도 중요하지만, 사실 먹는 것만큼 중요하고 즐거운 것은 찾기 힘들 것입니다. 먹는 것이 얼마나 중요하고 즐거운 일인지는 금식을 2~3일만 해보면, 아니 하루만 굶어봐도 절절하게 느낄 것입니다.

예루살렘에서 그발 강까지는 약1200km(750mile)입니다. 말도 다르고 먹을 것도 전혀 다른 750마일이나 떨어진 바벨론에서 기적이 일어났습니다. 그곳에 하나님이 임재하신 것입니다. 제사장 가문의 에스겔에게 하나님이 임재하시어 네생물의 환상 가운데 당신은 여전히 온 우주의 왕이심을 드러내십니다.

그리고는 에스겔에게 보이시는 두루마리를 먹으라고 하십니다(1). 기록된 말씀이 아닌, 두루마리 자체를 먹으라고 하십니다. 물론 이것은 환상 가운데 일어난 일입니다. 당시 두루마리는 동물의 가죽이나 갈대를 얇게 펴서 만든 파피루스입니다. 거기에 글을 써서 보관하는 것이 두루마리입니다.

오늘날로 치자면 두루마리를 먹으라는 것은 성경 책을 한장 한장 뜯어 먹으라는 의미입니다. 이것으로 배와 창자를 채우라고 하십니다. 에스겔은 하나님의 말씀에 순종하여 두루마리를 먹었고, 그 맛이 꿀과 같이 달았습니다(3).  

What Shall We Eat? (Verses 1–3)

Today’s modern society shows great interest in food. With the rise of social media, people eagerly share photos and videos of delicious, unique, or special meals they’ve had. Others experience vicarious pleasure just by watching these posts.

Food culture is certainly significant, but perhaps few things in life are as essential and enjoyable as eating. The importance and joy of eating become painfully clear if one fasts for just two or three days—or even just a single day.

From Jerusalem to the Kebar River is roughly 1,200 kilometers (750 miles). In Babylon, a land 750 miles away with a different language and unfamiliar food, something miraculous happened: God manifested His presence. God appeared to Ezekiel, a priest from a priestly family, revealing to him a vision of four living creatures—a powerful reminder that God remains the King of the entire universe.

Then God commanded Ezekiel to eat a scroll (v. 1). Not just to read it, but to literally consume the scroll. Of course, this took place in a vision. In those days, scrolls were made from animal skin or papyrus—thin sheets rolled up and used for writing.

To put it in modern terms, being told to eat a scroll would be like being told to tear out pages of the Bible and physically eat them. God tells Ezekiel to fill his stomach and bowels with the scroll. Ezekiel obeyed, and the scroll tasted as sweet as honey (v. 3).

무엇인가를 먹는다는 것은 그 먹는 것이 내가 된다는 것입니다. 먹는 것에 따라서 사람의 신체는 물론이고, 성격까지 변한다는 연구 결과가 있습니다. 예전에는 못 먹어서 병에 걸렸다면, 현대는 너무 먹어서 병에 걸립니다. 결국 무엇을 먹는가가 나의 삶을 결정하는 것입니다.

두루마리, 곧 하나님의 말씀을 먹는다는 것은 말씀을 듣고, 읽는 수준에 머무르는 것이 아니라, 말씀이 체화되는 것을 의미합니다. 말씀이 몸에 들어와 화학작용에 의해 피가 되고 살이 되고 뼈가 되는 것입니다.

성만찬에도 바로 이런 원리가 숨어 있습니다. 예수님은 떡과 포도주를 당신의 살과 피라고 하셨습니다.

그리고 그것을 먹고 마시라고 하십니다. 곧 예수를 먹고 마심으로 예수로 체화되라는 것입니다.

작은 예수가 되어야 합니다. 요한은 예수님에 대해서 다음과 같이 정의합니다.

말씀이 육신이 되어 우리 가운데 거하시매 우리가 그의 영광을 보니

아버지의 독생자의 영광이요 은혜와 진리가 충만하더라 (요 1:14)

예수를 먹는 것은 곧 하나님의 말씀을 먹는 것입니다. 무엇인가를 먹을 때 먹은 것은 곧 내가 되는 것입니다.

나는 무엇을 먹고 있습니까? 나는 지난 한 주간 눈으로 귀로 생각으로 입으로 무엇을 먹었습니까?

그것이 곧 내가 되는 것입니다.

To eat something means that what you eat becomes part of you. Studies even show that our diet can affect not only our bodies but also our personalities. In the past, people got sick from lack of food; today, people often get sick from too much. What we eat ultimately determines how we live.

Eating the scroll—God’s Word—means more than just hearing or reading it. It is about internalizing it, letting it become part of your body, your blood, your bones. It’s about letting the Word transform you from the inside out.

This same principle is found in the sacrament of Communion. Jesus said the bread and the wine are His body and blood. And He tells us to eat and drink them. In other words, He calls us to consume Christ, to embody Him.

We are to become "little Christs." John defines Jesus in this way:

To eat Jesus is to eat the Word of God. And when we eat something, that something becomes who we are.

So let me ask you: What have you been eating?This past week—through your eyes, your ears, your thoughts, your mouth—what have you consumed?

Because what you eat, you become. 

무엇을 말할 것인가 (4~11절)

하나님은 말씀을 먹은 에스겔에게 이제는 그 말씀을 가감없이 이스라엘 백성에게 전하라고 말씀 하십니다.

같은 언어를 사용하는 이스라엘 백성에게 하나님의 말씀을 전하라는 것입니다(4). 현대선교의 중요한 핵심 중 하나입니다. 동일한 언어를 사용하는 사람이 복음을 전하는 것이 훨씬 효과적입니다(5).

하지만 이스라엘 백성은 마음과 이마가 굳어서 말씀을 받지 않을 것입니다. 차라리 다른 족속이면 말씀을 들었을 것입니다. 그래도 두려워말고 얼굴과 이마를 맞대고 말씀을 전해야 합니다. 하나님은 에스겔에게 다이아몬드와 같은 용감한 마음과 굳은 생각을 주실 것입니다. 두려워말고 말씀을 전해야 합니다(9).

하나님은 그들이 듣든지 아니 듣든지 말씀을 전하라고 말씀 하십니다(11).

나는 무엇을 말하고 있습니까? 우리는 듣든지 아니 듣든지 말씀, 예수, 곧 복음을 전해야 합니다. 세상의 소식이나 정보, 가쉽거리가 아니라, 말씀이신 예수와 그가 우리를 위해 하신 복음을 전해야 합니다.

What Shall We Speak? (Verses 4–11)

After Ezekiel consumed the scroll, God commanded him to now speak the Word to the people of Israel—without alteration, without compromise.

God was sending him not to a foreign people, but to his own—those who shared the same language (v. 4). This is actually a critical principle in modern missions: the gospel is often most effectively shared by those who speak the same language and understand the culture intimately (v. 5).

Yet even though they spoke the same language, the Israelites would not listen. Their hearts were stubborn, and their foreheads were hardened. Ironically, if Ezekiel had been sent to a foreign nation, they might have actually listened.

Still, God told him: Do not be afraid. He must confront them boldly, face-to-face, forehead-to-forehead. And to strengthen Ezekiel, God promised to make his face and forehead as hard as diamond—resolute, unyielding, courageous (v. 9).

God’s charge was clear: Whether they listen or not, you must speak my words to them (v. 11).

So then, what are we speaking?

We are called to speak the Word—Jesus—the gospel. Not just news or opinions or gossip, but the good news of what Christ has done for us.

다시 현실로 (12~15절)  

주의 영이 에스겔을 들어 올리고, 네 생물과 바퀴에서 하나님의 영광을 찬양하는 소리가 들여옵니다(13).

주의 영에 이끌려 가는 에스겔의 마음에는 전해도 듣지 않을 백성들에 대한 근심이 있었지만, 여호와의 권능이 힘있게 그를 감동시킵니다(14). 에스겔은 다시 현실인 텔아빕으로 돌아왔습니다. 현실은 말씀을 전하기에는 두렵습니다. 그는 넋을 잃은채로 일주일을 보냅니다.

에스겔의 입장이 이해가 됩니다. 아무리 교회에서 열심히 예배하고 은혜를 받고 가정으로 직장으로 돌아가지만, 현실은 내가 감당하기에 두려운 적이 한두번이 아닙니다. 어떻게 해야 할까요?

그럴때 우리는 더 많이 말씀을 먹어야 합니다. 우리 옛말에 밥심으로 산다는 말이 있습니다. 말씀을 먹어야 말씀을 전할 수 있는 것입니다. 그렇게 할 때 하나님은 우리의 마음과 생각을 다이아몬드처럼 단단하게 하실 것입니다. 또한 여호와의 권능이 힘있게 우리를 감동시킬 것입니다. 그러면 순종할 수 있습니다.

말씀, 곧 예수를 먹고 마시고 날마다 전하는 한사랑성도 되시기를 바랍니다.

Back to Reality (Verses 12–15)

Then the Spirit of the Lord lifted Ezekiel up, and he heard the thunderous sound of praise from the four living creatures and the wheels, declaring the glory of the Lord (v. 13).

Even as Ezekiel was carried by the Spirit, his heart was burdened. He was filled with sorrow, knowing that the people likely wouldn’t listen. But the hand of the Lord was strong upon him (v. 14).

Ezekiel returned to the real world—to Tel Abib. And reality was harsh. The people were unresponsive, hardened. It was a fearful place to proclaim God’s Word. Ezekiel sat stunned and speechless among the exiles for seven days.

And we can relate.

We might worship passionately at church and be deeply moved by God’s Word. But once we return to our homes, jobs, and daily routines, fear and discouragement often take over. The real world is not easy.

So what should we do?

We must eat more of the Word.

There’s an old Korean saying: “We live by the strength of rice.” Likewise, we live by the strength of the Word. We must consume the Word—digest it daily—if we are to speak it with conviction. When we do this, God will strengthen our hearts and minds like diamond. His powerful hand will move us deeply. And then, we will have the courage to obey.

May you be a believer who eats, drinks, and proclaims Jesus—the Word—every day.
