3:1 미쁘다 이 말이여, 곧 사람이 감독의 직분을 얻으려함은 선한 일을 사모하는 것이라 함이로다

3:2 그러므로 감독은 책망할 것이 없으며 한 아내의 남편이 되며 절제하며 신중하며 단정하며 나그네를 대접하며 가르치기를 잘하며

3:3 술을 즐기지 아니하며 구타하지 아니하며 오직 관용하며 다투지 아니하며 돈을  사랑하지 아니하며

3:4 자기 집을 잘 다스려 자녀들로 모든 공손함으로 복종하게 하는 자라야 할지며

3:5 (사람이 자기 집을 다스릴 줄 알지 못하면 어찌  하나님의 교회를 돌보리오)

3:6 새로 입교한 자도 말지니 교만하여 마귀를 정죄하는 그 정죄에 빠질까 함이요

3:7 또한 외인에게서도 선한 증거를 얻은 자라야 할지니 비방과 마귀의 올무에 빠질까 염려하라

1 Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. 2 Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect. 5 (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?) 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. 7 He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.

3:8 이와 같이 집사들도 정중하고 일구이언을 하지 아니하고 술에 인박히지 아니하고 더러운 이를 탐하지 아니하고

3:9 깨끗한 양심에 믿음의 비밀을 가진 자라야 할지니

3:10 이에 이 사람들을 먼저 시험하여 보고 그 후에 책망할 것이 없으면 집사의 직분을 맡게 할 것이요

8 In the same way, deacons are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. 9 They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.

3:11 여자들도 이와 같이 정숙하고 모함하지 아니하며 절제하며 모든 일에 충성된 자라야 할지니라

11 In the same way, the women are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything.

3:12 집사들은 한 아내의 남편이 되어 자녀와 자기 집을 잘 다스리는 자일지니

3:13 집사의 직분을 잘한 자들은 아름다운 지위와 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 믿음에 큰 담력을 얻느니라

12 A deacon must be faithful to his wife and must manage his children and his household well. 13 Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.

사도 바울은 디모데를 통해 에베소 교회를 보호하기 위해 여러 가르침을 남깁니다. 그 중에 오늘 말씀은 교회 내 지도자들의 자격을 다루고 있습니다. 여러 사람이 모인 조직이나 단체는 각기 정체성이나 방향성이 그들의 목적에 따라 달라질 것입니다. 그러므로 교회라는 조직을 건강하게 이끌기 위해서는 교회의 역할을 잘 이해하고 그에 걸맞는 건강한 리더들이 필요합니다. 그렇게 함으로써 교회가 바르게 세워지고 거짓 가르침으로부터 보호할 수 있게 되죠. 즉 교회라는 조직을 위한 리더는 세상이 요구하는 자질과 다른 자격이 필요합니다. 그것들이 어떠한 자격인지 사도 바울의 말씀을 통해 한번 알아보길 원합니다.

The Apostle Paul left many teachings through Timothy in order to protect the church in Ephesus. Today’s passage focuses on the qualifications of church leaders. Any organization or group of people will have a different identity and direction depending on its purpose. Therefore, to lead the church—a unique kind of organization—in a healthy way, it's important to understand the church’s role and raise up leaders who are healthy and fit for that calling. In doing so, the church is built up correctly and protected from false teachings. In other words, leadership within the church requires different qualifications than what the world demands. Let us look into what those qualifications are through the words of Apostle Paul.

먼저 1절에서 7절까지는 감독의 자격에 대해 나옵니다. 감독이라고 함은 ‘감시자’ 또는 ‘관리자’라는 의미로 오늘날 교회에서는 ‘장로’를 나타낸다고 보면 됩니다. 1절에 이러한 직분을 감당하려는 자는 ‘선한 일을 사모하는 것’이라는 말씀이 나옵니다. 선한 일이라함은 무엇을 말하는 것일까요? ‘선함’은 하나님 안에 있는 것으로 선한 일은 하나님의 뜻이자 계획하신 일입니다. 그러므로 교회 일을 감독하려는 자는 하나님의 일을 사랑하는 자이어야 하는 것입니다. 이 조건이 가장 먼저 나와있는 것이 얼마나 은혜입니까? 얼마나 잘생겼는지, 키는 얼마나 큰지, 돈은 얼마나 많은지, 학벌은 어떤지와 같은 것이 우선 순위가 아닙니다. 하나님을 사랑하는 그 중심이 가장 커야겠지요. 그렇지만서도 또 마음만 가지고는 또 다 되는 것은 아닐 것입니다. 찬양하는 것이 너무 좋다고해서 고음불가인 제가 찬양 인도자가 될 수 없는 것처럼 말이죠. 그러므로 2절부터 좀 더 자세한 자격요건이 서술되어져 있습니다. 

First, verses 1 to 7 address the qualifications of an overseer. The term “overseer” can be understood as “watcher” or “manager,” and in today’s church context, it often refers to an elder. Verse 1 says that the person who desires this role desires a “noble task.” What is meant by a “noble task”? Goodness is found in God, so a noble task is one aligned with God’s will and plan. Therefore, one who wants to oversee the work of the church must love God’s work. Isn’t it such grace that this is listed as the very first qualification? It doesn't start with how handsome someone is, how tall, how wealthy, or what kind of education they have. What matters most is a heart that loves God. That said, having the right heart alone isn't enough. Just as I can’t become a worship leader simply because I love worship—especially if I can't sing high notes—there are further qualifications described starting in verse 2.

먼저는 책망할 것이 없어야 합니다. 이건 즉 도덕적 비난이나 법적, 사회적 고발 거리가 없음을 의미합니다. 그리고 한 아내에게 충실한 모범적인 가정 생활을 하는 남편이여야 합니다. 또 절제, 신중, 단정함은 곧 자기 통제력이 강한 자라는 것이겠죠. 나그네를 잘 대접하며 섬기는 자세와 마음이 있어야 하고 가르치기를 잘해야 합니다. 이 점은 거짓 교사들이 활동하고 있는 에베소 교회의 상황에서 더욱 특별히 필요했던 자질입니다. 이렇게 2절에 나온 감독의 요건은 자연스럽게 3절에서 요구하는 방탕함, 폭력성, 물질적 탐욕을 이겨낼 자의 면모로 보입니다. 그리고 무엇보다 4절과 5절이 눈에 띕니다. 감독의 직분을 가지려는 사람은 먼저 자기 집을 먼저 잘 다스려야 한다는 것입니다. 이 구절의 뜻은 개인의 사적인 영역에서의 신실함이 공적 직분을 맡는 데 중요한 요소가 됨을 나타냅니다. 6절에서는 겸손함의 중요성을, 그리고 7절에서는 사회적 도덕성을 강조합니다.

First, an overseer must be above reproach—that is, free from moral blame or legal/social accusations. He must be faithful to his wife and show an exemplary family life. He must also be temperate, self-controlled, respectable—qualities that reflect strong self-discipline. He must be hospitable, willing to serve others, and able to teach—a critical skill especially in the Ephesian church where false teachers were active. These qualities in verse 2 naturally oppose the vices listed in verse 3: drunkenness, violence, and greed. Verses 4 and 5 especially stand out: a person aspiring to be an overseer must manage his own household well. This highlights how personal faithfulness in one’s private life is a key indicator of readiness for public ministry. Verse 6 emphasizes humility, and verse 7 stresses the importance of good reputation in society.

다음으로 8절에서 13절까지는 집사의 자격을 다루고 있습니다. 집사란 ‘섬기는 자’라는 의미입니다. 그리고 이들에게 요구되는 자격 요건은 감독과 거의 비슷한 수준으로 요구됩니다. 8절에서는 집사가 될 자는 존중받을 만한 인격을 가져야 하고, 말을 쉽게 바꾸지 않아 믿을 수 있어야 하며, 음주가무를 즐기지 않고, 부당한 이익에 욕심을 부리지 않아야 합니다. 9절에 나와있는 믿음의 비밀이란 예수님을 뜻합니다. 깨끗한 양심에 예수를 믿는 믿음을 가진 자여야 합니다. 이러한 자들도 10절에 먼저 시험하여 그들의 성품과 신앙과 은사를 검증해야 한다고 말합니다. 11절에서는 또 여자 집사들도 마찬가지로 존경할 말하고 남을 헐뜯지 않으며 절제하고 모든 일에 믿을 만한 사람이어야 한다고 말합니다. 12절에서 다시 남성 집사들은 감독과 마찬가지로 가정의 질서와 관리 능력이 필요합니다. 마지막으로 13절 말씀, “집사의 직분을 잘한 자들은 아름다운 지위와 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 믿음에 큰 담력을 얻느니라.” 교회에서 집사의 직분을 잘 감당하면 교회에서 인정을 받고 선한 영향력을 끼칠 수 있습니다. 믿음에 큰 담력을 얻는 다는 말은 영적 성장을 통해 믿음에 확신을 얻어 진리를 더욱 담대하고 자유롭게 말할 수 있게 된다는 것 입니다. 교회에서 맡은 직분을 통해 누릴 수 있는 가장 큰 은혜와 축복은 우리 스스로의 믿음이 더욱 단단해 지는 것일 것입니다. 내가 하는 일이 낭비가 아니고 영원한 하나님 나라를 위해 쓰임받는다는 확신은 우리의 영혼에 참 된 기쁨을 줄 것입니다.

Next, verses 8 to 13 describe the qualifications of a deacon. The word “deacon” means servant. The qualifications for deacons are nearly as high as for overseers. In verse 8, deacons must be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. Verse 9 mentions the “mystery of the faith,” which refers to Jesus Christ. A deacon must have sincere faith in Jesus and a clear conscience. Verse 10 says deacons must first be tested to prove their character, faith, and gifting.

In verse 11, female deacons (or the wives of deacons, depending on interpretation) must likewise be worthy of respect, not slanderers, temperate, and trustworthy in everything. Verse 12 emphasizes that male deacons, like overseers, must manage their families well. Finally, verse 13 says, “Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.” This means faithful service as a deacon earns recognition and influence within the church. Gaining great assurance in the faith means growing spiritually and gaining the boldness to speak truth confidently and freely.

The greatest blessing and grace we can experience through the roles we hold in the church is that our own faith becomes more solid. Knowing that what we do is not in vain, but used for the eternal kingdom of God, brings true joy to our souls.

그리고 사도 바울의 이러한 말씀은 지금 현재 교회에 직분을 맡고있는 분들에게만 해당되는 것이 아닙니다. 지금 현재 ‘나는 장로도 아니고 목회자도 아니고 안수집사도 아니니 이 말씀은 나에게는 해당되지 않는 말씀이네’ 라고 생각하신다면 천만의 말씀입니다. 먼저는 하나님은 우리가 계속해서 성장하여 모두 이와 같은 아름다인 지위를 잘 감당하기를 원하십니다. 우리가 언제까지 아기와 같이 젖만 먹고 있겠습니까? 히브리서 저자는 이렇게 말합니다. “젖을 먹는 자마다 어린 아이니 의의 말씀을 경험하지 못한 자요 단단한 음식은 장성한 자의 것이니 그들은 지각을 사용함으로 연단을 받아 선악을 분별하는 자들이니라” (히 5:23-24). 나의 자녀가 연령과 때에 맞게 성장하지 못한다면 그것만큼 걱정스럽고 속상한 일이 또 없을 것입니다. 같은 마음으로 우리를 바라보시는 하나님 아버지 이십니다. 그리고 저는 정말 자리가 사람을 만든다는 것을 믿습니다. 다 완벽히 준비되서 사역하는 사람은 없어요. 오늘 이렇게 훑어본 자격들을 다 100% 갖춘 자가 예수님이 아니고선 이 세상 어디에 있겠습니까? Fake it till you make it! 우리는 모두 성화의 과정 가운데 주님 닮아가는 줄로 믿습니다.

​​The Apostle Paul’s teaching is not only for those who currently hold leadership roles in the church. If you think, “I’m not a pastor, elder, or ordained deacon, so this doesn’t apply to me,” you’re completely mistaken. God desires for all of us to grow continuously and be able to faithfully fulfill such honorable roles. How long can we remain like infants, only drinking milk? The author of Hebrews says, “Anyone who lives on milk is still an infant, not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” (Hebrews 5:13–14) If your child doesn't grow according to their age, how worrying and heartbreaking would that be? That’s the same heart our Father God has as He watches over us. And I truly believe that the role shapes the person. There is no one who begins ministry perfectly prepared. Who in this world—other than Jesus—could possibly meet 100% of the qualifications we looked through today? Fake it till you make it! I believe we are all in the process of sanctification, becoming more like the Lord day by day.

더하여 교회라고 함은 단순한 건물만을 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 사도 바울은 고린도전서에서 “너희 몸은 너희가 하나님께로부터 받은 바 너희 가운데 계신 성령의 전 (6:19)”이라 말했습니다. 성령님을 모시는 자들이 모인 곳이 교회라는 공동체가 됩니다. 그말인 즉 우리 성도 개인 한 명 한 명이 가장 작은 교회입니다. 우리는 개인 한 명이 기독교를 대표하는 자라는 책임감을 간과해서는 안됩니다. 그리고 그 한 명이 사회에서 어떻게 갈등을 해결하고 본을 보이는 지에 따라 우리 주변 사람들이 기독교를 어떻게 생각하는지에 많은 영향을 끼칠 것 입니다. 그러니 5절을 다시 한번 읽으며 말씀을 마무리 하길 원합니다. “사람이 자기 집을 다스릴 줄 알지 못하면 어찌 하나님의 교회를 돌보리요.” 우리는 먼저 우리 스스로의 개인 사적 영역을 잘 다스려야 합니다. 밖에서 다른 사람들의 눈에 보일 때 행동만을 신경쓰는 것이 아니라 집에 들어가서 문 딱 닫을 때부터 내가 어떻게 행동하고 생각하는지 살펴봐야겠습니다. 교회에서만 하나님과 동행하는 것이 아니라 24/7 항시 하나님을 의식하는 삶을 산다면 우리는 모두 하나님의 일꾼으로 쓰임받을 줄로 믿습니다.

Furthermore, the church is not merely a building. In 1 Corinthians 6:19, Paul says, “Your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God.” Those who carry the Holy Spirit become the church as a community. This means every individual believer is the smallest unit of the church. We must not forget our responsibility to represent Christianity as individuals. How one person resolves conflict and lives as a role model in society can deeply influence how others perceive the Christian faith. So let us close by reading verse 5 once more: “If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?” We must first manage our private lives well. It’s not just about putting on a good show in public. We must examine how we live and think from the moment we close the door at home. Walking with God must not be something we only do at church—it should be a 24/7 lifestyle of living with constant awareness of Him. If we do that, I believe we can all be used as faithful workers of God.
