The Lord’s Grace to Paul

12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service. 13 Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. 14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

1:15 미쁘다 모든 사람이 받을 만한 이 말이여 그리스도 예수께서 죄인을 구원하시려고 세상에 임하셨다 하였도다 죄인 중에 내가 괴수니라

1:16 그러나 내가 긍휼을 입은 까닭은 예수 그리스도께서 내게 먼저 일체 오래 참으심을 보이사 후에 주를 믿어 영생 얻는 자들에게 본이 되게 하려 하심이라

15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. The Charge to Timothy Renewed

18 Timothy, my son, I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well, 19 holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith. 20 Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.

                  어제 말씀에서 우리는 복음의 목적이 사랑이라는 것을 함께 나눴었습니다. 오늘의 말씀에서는 바울이 자신이야 말로 복음의 수혜를 입은 자라는 것을 말하고 있지요. 한국에 남성(南星) 김장하 선생이라고 하는 분이 계십니다. 김장하 선생은 평생을 바쳐 어려운 학생들에게 장학금을 주었고, 그 은혜를 입은 이들은 훗날 사회의 지도자가 되어 “선생님을 본받겠다”고 고백했습니다. 그들 또한 받은 은혜를 기억하며 그 삶을 이어 가려 한 것이지요. 바울 역시 죄인 중에 괴수였던 자신에게 은혜를 부어주신 하나님을 잊지 않았습니다. 그리고 그 은혜에 합당하게 살기 위해, 복음을 지키는 선한 싸움을 싸우라고 디모데에게 당부합니다. 오늘 우리는 바울의 고백과 권면을 통해, 나의 나 된 것은 오직 주님의 은혜임을 다시 한번 돌아보기 원합니다. 그리고 그 은혜에 합당한 삶은 무엇인지 함께 알아보기 원합니다. 오늘은 주의 은혜로 선한 싸움을 싸우라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

Yesterday, we discussed that the purpose of the Gospel is love. Today, in our scripture, Paul shares that he himself was a recipient of the Gospel's benefits. In Korea, there was a man named Kim Jang-ha, known as Namseong. Mr. Kim Jang-ha dedicated his life to providing scholarships for struggling students, and those who received his grace later became leaders in society, confessing, "We will emulate our teacher." They, too, remembered the grace they received and sought to live accordingly. Similarly, Paul never forgot the God who poured out grace upon him, a chief among sinners. And to live a life worthy of that grace, he urged Timothy to fight the good fight for the Gospel. Today, through Paul's confession and exhortation, we want to reflect once more that "by the grace of God I am what I am." And we want to understand together what a life worthy of that grace entails. Today, we want to share a message titled, "Fight the Good Fight by God's Grace."

                  ‘주의 은혜로 선한 싸움을 싸우라’ 그 첫번째, 오직 주의 은혜로 우리는 본이 되었습니다. 본문 말씀 12절을 한 번 함께 읽어보겠습니다. “나를 능하게 하신 그리스도 예수 우리 주께 내가 감사함은 나를 충성되이 여겨 내게 직분을 맡기심이니” 이 짧은 한 절의 말씀이 사도바울이 스스로를 어떻게 생각했는지에 대해 잘 드러내고 있습니다. 어제도 함께 나누었듯이 사도바울은 자신의 사도됨이 자신이 가지고 있는 학식이나 능력에서 비롯된 것이 아니라 바로 예수님의 명령에 따른 것임을 고백하고 있었지요. 오늘의 말씀도 마찬가지입니다. “나를 능하게 하신 그리스도 예수” 자신의 능력, 자신이 가지고 있는 힘이 사도 바울 스스로부터 온 것이 아니라 오직 예수님으로부터 온 것임을 말하고 있습니다. “우리 주께 내가 감사함은 나를 충성되이 여겨 내게 직분을 맡기심이니” 마찬가지이지요. 사도 바울이 충성된 것이 아닙니다. 예수님께서 그를 충성되다고 여기셨다는 것입니다. 바로 다음 절인 13절에 나오지만 이는 자격없는 자에게 자격을 주신 것입니다. 그리고 그에게 직분을 맡기셨다고 합니다. 그가 가지고 있는 능력, 그의 충성, 그의 직분 모두 하나님의 은혜로 그렇게 된 것입니다. 이는 13절에 적혀있는 그의 고백에서 더 크게 드러납니다. 자신이 전에는 비방자요 박해자요 폭행자였다. 점점 더 강도가 세지는 고백입니다. 비방자에서 박해자로. 박해자에서 폭행자로. 이는 무슨 뜻입니까? 내가 지금과 같은 은혜를 입을 자격이 있는 사람이 아니다 라는 말이지요.

Fight the Good Fight by God's Grace: First, By God's Grace Alone, We Became Examples.

Let's read verse 12 together: "I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service." This short verse clearly reveals how the Apostle Paul viewed himself. As we shared yesterday, Paul confessed that his apostleship did not come from his own knowledge or ability, but from the command of Jesus. Today's passage is no different. "Christ Jesus who has given me strength" — he is saying that his ability, his strength, did not come from himself, but solely from Jesus. "I thank... that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service." It's the same here. It wasn't that Paul was inherently trustworthy; Jesus considered him trustworthy. As the very next verse, verse 13, shows, this was giving qualification to the unqualified. And he entrusted him with a ministry. His ability, his trustworthiness, his ministry—all were by God's grace. This is even more evident in his confession in verse 13, where he states that he was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a violent man. This confession intensifies: from blasphemer to persecutor, from persecutor to violent man. What does this mean? It means he was not worthy of the grace he received.

그래서 15절에서 그는 스스로를 가르켜 ‘죄인 중에 내가 괴수라’ 라고 고백하고 있는 것입니다. 이처럼 긍휼함을 입을 자격이 없는 사람. 은혜를 입을 자격이 없는 사람에게 긍휼함과 은혜를 부어 주시기에 모든 것은 오직 주의 은혜로 된 것임을 고백할 수 밖에 없는 것입니다. 그것이 14절의 말씀입니다. 함께 읽어보겠습니다. “우리 주의 은혜가 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 믿음과 사랑과 함께 넘치도록 풍성하였도다” 있을 수 없는 곳에, 가장 낮은 곳에 주님의 은혜가 넘치도록 풍성한 것입니다. 이것이 바로 복음입니다. 모든 사람이 믿을 수 있는 말, 의지할 수 있는 말인것입니다. 미쁜 말인 것입니다. 15절입니다. “미쁘다 모든 사람이 받을 만한 이 말이여” 그 말이 무엇입니까? “그리스도 예수께서 죄인을 구원하시려고 세상에 임하셨다 하였도다.” 교회를 비방하고 박해하며 폭력까지 사용했던 죄인의 괴수와 같던 사울에게 찾아오셔서 그를 구원하셨습니다. 이런 사울을 구원하셨다면 하나님께서 구원하지 못할 사람은 없습니다. 16절 말씀 그대로 그가 긍휼을 입은 까닭은 바로 그와 같은 자도 구원하시는 예수님의 오래 참으심을 보이셔서 후에 주님을 믿는 자들에게 하나님의 구원이 어떤 것인지 본을 보여주시려 하심이었던 것입니다. 마찬가지입니다. 사울이 은혜를 입어 바울이 된 것처럼, 내가 하나님의 구원을 입은 것은 전적인 하나님의 은혜인 것입니다. 오직 주의 은혜로 우리는 하나님의 구원의 본이 된 것입니다. 이런 은혜를 입은 우리는 그 은혜에 합당하게 살아야 할 것입니다. 그렇다면 그 방법은 무엇입니까?

That's why in verse 15, he confesses of himself, "I am the chief of sinners." Since such a person, unworthy of compassion and grace, received an overflowing measure of both, he could only confess that everything was by God's grace alone. That's what verse 14 tells us. Let's read it together: "The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus." God's grace was abundantly poured out in the most unexpected and lowest places. This is the Gospel. It is a trustworthy saying that everyone can believe and rely on. Verse 15 says, "Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance." And what is that saying? "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners." He came to Saul, who was like the chief of sinners, blaspheming, persecuting, and even using violence against the church, and saved him. If God saved such a Saul, there is no one God cannot save. As verse 16 says, the reason he received mercy was to display Jesus' patience, even to such a person, thereby setting an example for those who would later believe in the Lord, showing them what God's salvation is like. It's the same for us. Just as Saul received grace and became Paul, our salvation is entirely God's grace. By God's grace alone, we have become examples of God's salvation. Having received such grace, we ought to live lives worthy of it. So, what is the way to do this?

                  ‘주의 은혜로 선한 싸움을 싸우라’ 그 두번째, 주의 은혜로 구원의 본이 된 자들은 선한 싸움을 싸워야 합니다. 이제 바울은 디모데에게 과거의 예언과 사명을 상기시키며 ‘선한 싸움’을 싸우라 명령합니다. 이 선한 싸움을 바울은 어떻게 표현하고 있습니까? 함께 19절 말씀을 읽어보겠습니다. “믿음과 착한 양심을 가지라 어떤 이들은 이 양심을 버렸고 그 믿음에 관하여는 파선하였느니라” 19절 말씀에서 말하고 있는 믿음과 착한 양심이란 무엇이겠습니까? 어제 5절 말씀 기억하십니까? “이 교훈의 목적은 청결한 마음과 선한 양심과 거짓이 없는 믿음에서 나오는 사랑이거늘” 거짓이 없는 믿음과 선한 양심, 오늘 말씀 19절에서 말하고 있는 믿음과 착한 양심이 아니겠습니까? 나의 힘이 아닌 오직 하나님의 은혜로 내가 구원받은 것을 믿는 거짓이 없는 믿음. 그리고 그런 구원을 받은 자로서 하나님 앞에 합당하지 않은 행위를 분별할 수 있는 선하고 착한 양심이 바로 그것입니다. 바로 이런 믿음과 착한 양심을 지키는 것이 은혜를 입은자가 싸워야할 선한 싸움인 것이지요. 사도바울은 이 대목에서 군사용어를 사용하여 이 싸움이 생명이 걸려있는 중요한 싸움임을 상기시킵니다. 이 선한 싸움에 실패하면 어떻게 되는 것입니까? 그 예로 사도바울은 ‘후메내오와 알렉산더’라는 실명을 언급하며 예를 들고 있습니다. 그들은 마치 “하나님을 알되 하나님을 영화롭게도 아니하며 감사하지도 아니하고 오히려 그 생각이 허망하여지며 미련한 마음이 어두워졌나니” 라는 로마서 1:21절 말씀처럼 하나님을 알면서도 마음이 미련하게 되고 어두워졌습니다. 그들은 양심을 버리고 믿음에 관하여는 파선하였다고 오늘 말씀은 전하고 있습니다. 사도바울은 이들의 케이스를 통하여 복음에서 떠난 결과와 심각성이 어떠한 것인지 전하고 있는 것입니다. 주의 은혜로 구원의 본이 된 자들은 선한 싸움을 싸워 승리하여야 합니다. 믿음과 착한 양심으로 무장해야 합니다.

Fight the Good Fight by God's Grace: Second, Those Who Are Examples of Salvation by God's Grace Must Fight the Good Fight.

Now, Paul commands Timothy to "fight the good fight," reminding him of past prophecies and his mission. How does Paul describe this good fight? Let's read verse 19 together: "holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to their faith." What do "faith and a good conscience" in verse 19 refer to? Do you remember verse 5 from yesterday's message? "The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith." Isn't the sincere faith and good conscience mentioned in verse 5 the same as the faith and good conscience in today's verse 19? It is a sincere faith that believes our salvation is solely by God's grace, not by our own strength. And it is a good and pure conscience that can discern ungodly actions as those who have received such salvation. Indeed, protecting this faith and good conscience is the good fight that those who have received grace must fight. In this section, the Apostle Paul uses military terminology to emphasize that this fight is a crucial one, involving life itself. What happens if one fails in this good fight? Paul gives "Hymenaeus and Alexander" as examples, mentioning them by name. Just like Romans 1:21 says, "For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened," they knew God but their minds became foolish and darkened. Today's scripture tells us that they rejected their conscience and suffered shipwreck with regard to their faith. Through their cases, the Apostle Paul is conveying the results and seriousness of departing from the Gospel. Those who have become examples of salvation by God's grace must fight the good fight and triumph. We must be armed with faith and a good conscience.

                  말씀을 맺습니다. 사도 바울은 죄인 중에 괴수였던 자신을 구원하여주신 예수님의 넘치는 은혜를 기억하고 있었습니다. 그래서 그는 자신과 같이 은혜에 합당하게 살기 위해 복음을 지키는 선한 싸움을 싸우라고 디모데에게 권면하고 있는 것입니다. 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 오늘 말씀에서 이야기 한 것처럼 믿음과 선한 양심. 즉 자격없는 우리에게 넘치도록 부어주신 예수님의 은혜의 구원을 믿는 믿음과 하나님 앞에서 선하게 살아가려고 하는 선한 양심을 버리거나 파선하지 말고 이 믿음의 선한 싸움을 싸워 나가야 할 것입니다. 오늘도 이 선한싸움에서 승리하시는 여러분 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Conclusion

The Apostle Paul remembered the overflowing grace of Jesus, who saved him, the chief of sinners. Therefore, he encouraged Timothy to fight the good fight to protect the Gospel, so that he too might live a life worthy of that grace. It's the same for us. As today's scripture teaches, we must not abandon or suffer shipwreck with our faith and good conscience—that is, the faith that believes in Jesus' overflowing grace of salvation poured out on us, the unqualified, and the good conscience that strives to live righteously before God.
