1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,

2 To Timothy my true son in the faith:

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Timothy Charged to Oppose False Teachers

3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer 4 or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith. 5 The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. 6 Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk. 7 They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.

8 We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. 9 We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine 11 that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.

1 Timothy is the first of two letters Paul sent to Timothy. While Paul was in Ephesus during his third missionary journey, he had to leave for Macedonia, and he left Timothy in Ephesus to take his place. That's why in verse 3 of today's passage, Paul explains why he left Timothy in Ephesus, saying, "As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus."

At that time, the church in Ephesus was in a state of confusion, led astray by false teachers who were captivated by "different doctrines," "myths," and "endless genealogies." To correct the misguided faith of these believers, Paul had left Timothy in charge of the Ephesian church. Paul himself wanted to return to Ephesus quickly, but when circumstances didn't allow it, he sent encouragement and admonition to Timothy through this letter.

What was the content of this message? He instructs Timothy to command certain people who were teaching false doctrines to stop, and instead, to strive to preach the correct doctrine – the Gospel. Today, I want to share a message titled "True Doctrine: Focused on Love," based on this admonition from Paul.

1. True Doctrine Has Authority

Let's read verse 1 of our passage together: "Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope."

Here, Paul calls himself an apostle. What does "apostle" mean? There were many disciples of Jesus, so why were some called apostles and others simply disciples? The original Greek word for "apostle" means "one who is sent." Sent by whom? That's right, one who is sent by the command of Jesus. Today's verse 1 says, "Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope." This shows that Paul's apostleship was not based on his own merit or abilities, but entirely on the authority of Jesus Christ.

In other words, Paul explicitly states at the very beginning of this letter that he is merely a tool, and that it is God and Jesus who chose him as an apostle and work through him. Why is this so important? The reason is found in verse 2. Let's read it together: "To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord."

Paul refers to Timothy as his "true child in the faith." What does this mean? It means that Timothy is the rightful successor to Paul's apostolic authority. The reason Paul first explained why he was an apostle and how God and Jesus worked through him was to lay the groundwork for explaining that Timothy was his successor. By doing this, Paul publicly declares to those reading the letter that Timothy is carrying on his apostolic office and that, like Paul, Timothy is entrusted with the work of God and Jesus. That's why verse 2 says that God and Jesus' grace, mercy, and peace will be with him. Timothy is indeed an authentic minister, a tool of God and Jesus, called to deliver true doctrine to the Ephesian church.

2. True Doctrine Focuses on Love

Now, verses 3-4 of our passage describe certain people who were teaching "different doctrines." What kind of people were they? They were those who "give rise to useless speculation rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith." These individuals focused on other things like myths and endless genealogies. They captivated people with things that seemed more spectacular, more plausible, and undeniably correct, like myths and genealogies. And they constantly stirred up arguments and debates.

But friends, the core of today's message is in verse 5. Let's read it together: "The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith."

Have you ever experienced this with dieting? Things like the "one-food diet"—for example, someone claiming to have lost 50 pounds by eating only bananas for two months. Or the "Atkins diet," where you eat only meat and completely cut out carbohydrates like rice or bread, which also became quite popular. However, these trendy diets all have something in common. "You only have to eat one food"? "You can eat only meat without effort"? They sound more glamorous and plausible. But we all know the truth: to lose weight, you need to eat less and exercise. All other methods are ultimately just secondary branches.

Today's message is similar. Other doctrines focus on the side branches, not the core. Verses 6-7 even say that those who teach such doctrines are so lost in their own meaningless talk that they don't even understand what they're saying! But verse 5, which we just read together, clearly states the purpose of the Gospel of Christ. It wasn't about elevating our status through the Gospel or trying to become teachers of the law. A pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith—and the love that flows from all of these—that is the very purpose of the Gospel we preach. In other words, our faith life should not merely remain in the acquisition of knowledge or the religious practice of observing the law. What's more important is whether our faith life is leading to love for our neighbors and for God.

To conclude, today we have discussed what true doctrine is through our passage. More than anything else, we must always consider where the ultimate purpose of true doctrine lies. Our faith should not be swayed by empty arguments, like those who teach false doctrines and boast of knowledge or judge others with legalism. Our faith must bear fruit in love that issues from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith. We must examine our hearts once again to see if we are perhaps neglecting love, the essential purpose of the Gospel, and focusing on other things.

I pray in the Lord's name that today you will be people who love your neighbor and love God, just as Jesus commanded. Amen.
