89:1 내가 여호와의 인자하심을 영원히 노래하며 주의 성실하심을 내 입으로 대대에 알게 하리 이다

89:2 내가 말하기를 인자하심을 영원히 세우시며 주의 성실하심을 하늘에서 견고히 하시리라 하였나이다

89:3 주께서 이르시되 나는 내가 택한 자와 언약을 맺으며 내 종 다윗에게 맹세하기를

89:4 내가 네 자손을 영원히 견고히 하며 네 왕위를 대대에 세우리라 하셨나이다 (셀라)

1 I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever;

    with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known

    through all generations.

2 I will declare that your love stands firm forever,

    that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.

3 You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one,

    I have sworn to David my servant,

4 ‘I will establish your line forever

    and make your throne firm through all generations.’”

5 The heavens praise your wonders, Lord,

    your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones.

6 For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord?

    Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings?

7 In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared;

    he is more awesome than all who surround him.

8 Who is like you, Lord God Almighty?

    You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

89:9 주께서 바다의 파도를 다스리시며 그 파도가 일어날 때에 잔잔하게 하시나이다

89:10 주께서 라합을 죽임 당한 자 같이 깨뜨리시고 주의 원수를 주의 능력의 팔로 흩으셨나이다

89:11 하늘이 주의 것이요 땅도 주의 것이라 세계와 그 중에 충만한 것을 주께서 건설하셨나이다

89:12 남북을 주께서 창조하셨으니 다볼과 헤르몬이 주의 이름으로 말미암아 즐거워하나이다

9 You rule over the surging sea;

    when its waves mount up, you still them.

10 You crushed Rahab like one of the slain;

    with your strong arm you scattered your enemies.

11 The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth;

    you founded the world and all that is in it.

12 You created the north and the south;

    Tabor and Hermon sing for joy at your name.

13 Your arm is endowed with power;

    your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.

89:14 공의와 정의가 주의 보좌의 기초라 인자함과 진실함이 주 앞에 있나이다

89:15 즐겁게 소리칠 줄 아는 백성은 복이 있나니 여호와여 그들이 주의 얼굴 빛 안에서 다니리로다

89:16 그들은 종일 주의 이름 때문에 기뻐하며 주의 공의로 말미암아 높아지오니

14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;

    love and faithfulness go before you.

15 Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you,

    who walk in the light of your presence, Lord.

16 They rejoice in your name all day long;

    they celebrate your righteousness.

17 For you are their glory and strength,

    and by your favor you exalt our horn.

18 Indeed, our shield belongs to the Lord,

    our king to the Holy One of Israel.

89:19 그 때에 주께서 환상 중에 주의 성도들에게 말씀하여 이르시기를 내가 능력 있는 용사에게는 돕는 힘을 더하며 백성 중에서 택함 받은 자를 높였으되

89:29 또 그의 후손을 영구하게 하여 그의 왕위를 하늘의 날과 같게 하리로다

19 Once you spoke in a vision,

    to your faithful people you said:

“I have bestowed strength on a warrior;

    I have raised up a young man from among the people.

20 I have found David my servant;

    with my sacred oil I have anointed him.

21 My hand will sustain him;

    surely my arm will strengthen him.

22 The enemy will not get the better of him;

    the wicked will not oppress him.

23 I will crush his foes before him

    and strike down his adversaries.

24 My faithful love will be with him,

    and through my name his horn will be exalted.

25 I will set his hand over the sea,

    his right hand over the rivers.

26 He will call out to me, ‘You are my Father,

    my God, the Rock my Savior.’

27 And I will appoint him to be my firstborn,

    the most exalted of the kings of the earth.

28 I will maintain my love to him forever,

    and my covenant with him will never fail.

29 I will establish his line forever,

    his throne as long as the heavens endure.

89:30 만일 그의 자손이 내 법을 버리며 내 규례대로 행하지 아니하며

89:31 내 율례를 깨뜨리며 내 계명을 지키지 아니하면

30 “If his sons forsake my law

    and do not follow my statutes,

31 if they violate my decrees

    and fail to keep my commands,

32 I will punish their sin with the rod,

    their iniquity with flogging;

33 but I will not take my love from him,

    nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.

34 I will not violate my covenant

    or alter what my lips have uttered.

35 Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness—

    and I will not lie to David—

36 that his line will continue forever

    and his throne endure before me like the sun;

37 it will be established forever like the moon,

    the faithful witness in the sky.”

89:38 그러나 주께서 주의 기름 부음 받은 자에게 노하사 물리치셔서 버리셨으며

89:39 주의 종의 언약을 미워하사 그의 관을 땅에 던져 욕되게 하셨으며

89:40 그의 모든 울타리를 파괴하시며 그 요새를 무너뜨리셨으므로

89:41 길로 지나가는 자들에게 다 탈취를 당하며 그의 이웃에게 욕을 당하나이다

38 But you have rejected, you have spurned,

    you have been very angry with your anointed one.

39 You have renounced the covenant with your servant

    and have defiled his crown in the dust.

40 You have broken through all his walls

    and reduced his strongholds to ruins.

41 All who pass by have plundered him;

    he has become the scorn of his neighbors.

42 You have exalted the right hand of his foes;

    you have made all his enemies rejoice.

43 Indeed, you have turned back the edge of his sword

    and have not supported him in battle.

44 You have put an end to his splendor

    and cast his throne to the ground.

45 You have cut short the days of his youth;

    you have covered him with a mantle of shame.

89:46 여호와여 언제까지니이까 스스로 영원히 숨기시리이까 주의 노가 언제까지 불붙듯 하시겠나이까

89:47 나의 때가 얼마나 짧은지 기억하소서 주께서 모든 사람을 어찌 그리 허무하게 창조하셨는지요

89:48 누가 살아서 죽음을 보지 아니하고 자기의 영혼을 스올의 권세에서 건지리이까 (셀라)

89:49 주여 주의 성실하심으로 다윗에게 맹세하신 그 전의 인자하심이 어디 있나이까

89:50 주는 주의 종들이 받은 비방을 기억하소서 많은 민족의 비방이 내 품에 있사오니

46 How long, Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?

    How long will your wrath burn like fire?

47 Remember how fleeting is my life.

    For what futility you have created all humanity!

48 Who can live and not see death,

    or who can escape the power of the grave?

49 Lord, where is your former great love,

    which in your faithfulness you swore to David?

50 Remember, Lord, how your servant has been mocked,

    how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the nations,

51 the taunts with which your enemies, Lord, have mocked,

    with which they have mocked every step of your anointed one.

89:52 여호와를 영원히 찬송할지어다 아멘 아멘

52 Praise be to the Lord forever!

Amen and Amen.

시편 89편은 다윗 왕조의 멸망을 슬퍼하며 회복을 위해서 기도하는 기도시입니다.

학자들은 B.C. 597년 바벨론 왕 느부갓네살이 유당의 여호야긴 왕을 잡아간 사건을 배경으로 지어진 시로 봅니다. 한편 표제 에스라인 에단의 마스길인데, 에단은 여두둔의 다른 이름입니다.

시편 2권을 마무리하는 72편이 왕을 축복하는 제왕의 시라며, 시편 3권을 마무리하는 89편은 기름부음 받은 왕의 멸망을 탄식하는 탄식시입니다. 1~18절 까지는 다윗 왕 언약을 상기하는 서론적 찬양(1~4절)과 전 우주적인 하나님의 위대하심(5~18절)을 찬양하는 부분으로 나뉩니다. 19~37절은 3연에 해당하며 다윗과 맺은 언약에 대한 찬양을 기록하고 있습니다.

Psalm 89 is a lamentation poem that mourns the fall of the Davidic dynasty and prays for its restoration.Scholars believe it was composed around 597 B.C., following the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar’s capture of King Jehoiachin of Judah. The superscription identifies the psalm as a maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite, with Ethan being another name for Jeduthun.If Psalm 72 concludes Book 2 of the Psalms with a royal blessing for the king, then Psalm 89 concludes Book 3 with a lament over the downfall of the anointed king.

Verses 1–18 consist of two parts: an introductory praise recalling the Davidic covenant (vv. 1–4) and praise of God’s universal greatness (vv. 5–18). Verses 19–37 form the third stanza and describe in detail the covenant God made with David.

신실하신 하나님의 다윗 언약과 그 영원성 (19~37절)

시인은 3, 4절에 잠깐 언급했던 다윗의 언약(삼하 7장)을 확대하여 노래합니다. 다윗의 왕위를 영원하게 하신다는 언약은 사무엘과 나단 선지자가 환상 가운데 받은 언약이며, 백성들에게 공식적으로 선포된 하나님의 언약입니다. 그 내용들을 정리하면 다음과 같습니다. 

1) 다윗을 왕으로 세우고, 그를 견고하게 할 것이다 (20-21절)

2) 대적을 물리칠 것이다 (22-23절)

3) 그의 뿔을 높일 것이다 (24-25절)

4) 아버지와 아들(장자)이 될 것이다 (26-27절)

5) 그의 후손이 왕위를 이을 것이다 (28-29절)

그런데 시인이 겪는 상황은 이 약속과 전혀 매칭되지 않습니다. 그렇다면 하나님이 거짓말을 하신 것인가?

문제는 항상 우리 인간에게 있습니다. 만일… 다윗의 후손이 하나님과의 언약을 깨뜨리면…

만일 다윗의 후손들이 하나님과의 언약을 깨뜨리면 하나님은 회초리와 채찍으로 벌하실 것(32)을 이미 말씀하셨습니다. 시인은 지금의 고통의 이유를 알고 있습니다. 우리 삶에 드리운 고통들 가운데 많은 것들이 우리 죄로 기인합니다. 본문에 등장하는 시인의 상황처럼 말입니다.

하지만 시인은 33, 34절의 약속도 기억합니다. 하나님의 인자함을 다 거두지 않을 것이고, 성실함을 폐하지 않을 것이며, 언약을 깨뜨리지 않고, 입술에서 낸 것은 변하지 않을 것입니다(33, 34). 우리 인간은 언약을 깨고 변하지만, 하나님은 언약의 신실하신 하나님이십니다. 반드시 약속을 지키는 분이십니다.

그렇다면 도대체 다윗의 언약과 우리는 무슨 상관인가요?! 다 아실 것입니다.

다윗은 예수님의 육제적으로 조상이지만, 동시에 영적으로 예수 그리스도를 반영하는 예표일 뿐입니다.

영원한 다윗 왕가는 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 완성될 영원한 천국을 의미합니다.

언약에 신실하신 하나님은 축복(23~24절)과 저주(30~32절)를 약속하셨습니다. 우리는 둘 다 받든지, 아니면 아예 받지 않아야 합니다. 영원한 축복을 받지 않으면, 곧 영원한 저주입니다. 그러니 우리는 반드시 영원한 축복의 언약을 지켜야 합니다.

God’s Faithfulness to the Davidic Covenant and Its Eternal Nature (vv. 19–37)

The psalmist expands upon the Davidic covenant briefly mentioned in verses 3–4 (see 2 Samuel 7).This promise of an everlasting Davidic throne was given through visions to the prophets Samuel and Nathan and was officially declared to the people. The summarized content is:

1. God will establish David as king and make him firm (vv. 20–21)

2. God will defeat his enemies (vv. 22–23)

3. God will exalt David’s horn (vv. 24–25)

4. God will be a Father to him, and David will be the firstborn son (vv. 26–27)

5. David’s descendants will inherit the throne (vv. 28–29)

However, the reality the psalmist is facing does not match this promise at all.Does that mean God lied?

No. The problem is always with us humans.If David’s descendants break the covenant with God...God had already said that He would punish them with a rod and stripes (v. 32).The psalmist understands the reason behind the present suffering. Much of the pain in our lives stems from our own sin, just like in the psalmist’s situation.

Yet, the psalmist also remembers the promises in verses 33–34:God will not take away His steadfast love, will not betray His faithfulness, will not break His covenant, and will not alter what His lips have uttered.Humans break covenants and change, but God is the faithful covenant-keeper. He always fulfills His promises.

But then, what does the Davidic covenant have to do with us? You likely know the answer.David was the physical ancestor of Jesus and also served as a spiritual foreshadowing of Christ.The eternal Davidic kingdom points to the eternal kingdom completed through Jesus Christ.

The God who is faithful to the covenant promised both blessings (vv. 23–24) and curses (vv. 30–32).We must receive either both—or neither.If we don’t receive the eternal blessing, then we face eternal curse.That’s why we must cling to the covenant of eternal blessing.

“그러나… 기억하소서”의 인생 (38~52절)

마지막 4연과 5연은 지금까지 와는 다른 분위기입니다. 다윗의 언약을 기억하며 감사와 은혜 넘치는 분위기에서 현재의 상황을 애통하며 간구하는 분위기로 전환이 됩니다. 18세의 어린 나이에 왕위에 오른 여호야긴이 포로로 잡혀가는 상황을 보면 어찌 이런 탄식이 나오지 않겠습니까?

우리는 오늘 본문에서 두 가지 인생의 모습을 발견합니다.

먼저는 ‘그러나’의 인생입니다.

1절부터37절 까지는 다윗의 언약을 상기했습니다. 바둑으로 치자면 ‘복기’입니다. 충분히 낙승하리라 예상되었는데, 그러나 치명적인 실수를 저질렀습니다. 실수로 놓은 돌이 패인 된 상황입니다.

하나님은 원래 우리의 인생이 승리할 수밖에 없도록, 행복하도록 디자인하셨습니다.

하지만 우리의 인생은 ‘그러나’의 인생입니다.

하나님은 아담에게 행복하고 완벽한 인생을 주셨지만, 그러나 아담은 선악과를 먹었습니다.

하나님은 이스라엘에게 승리하는 인생을 주셨지만, 그러나 아간은 물건을 훔쳤습니다.

하나님은 사울에게 이스라엘의 초대 왕의 영광을 주셨지만, 그러나 사울은 교만했습니다.

하나님은 다윗에게 영원한 왕위와 모든 것을 주셨지만, 그러나 다윗은 부하의 아내를 훔쳤습니다.

하나님은 베드로에게 천국의 열쇠를 주셨지만, 그러나 베드로는 주님을 모른다고 부인했습니다.

하나님은 우리의 인생이 행복하고 승리하기를 원했지만, 그러나 우리는 각기 제 길로 간 것입니다.

“But… Remember” Lives (vv. 38–52)

The final fourth and fifth stanzas shift in tone.Where the psalm previously overflowed with gratitude for the Davidic covenant, it now becomes a lament filled with pleas.Imagine King Jehoiachin, taken captive at just 18 years old. Who wouldn’t cry out in anguish?

Today’s passage shows us two kinds of life stories:

1. The “But” Life

Verses 1–37 recall the Davidic covenant. In terms of the game Go, this is like a replay—analyzing a game thought to be a sure victory. But a fatal mistake has led to defeat.God originally designed our lives for victory and joy.But our lives are “but” lives.

• God gave Adam a perfect, joyful life—but Adam ate the forbidden fruit.

• God gave Israel a victorious life—but Achan stole the devoted things.

• God gave Saul the honor of being the first king—but Saul became proud.

• God gave David an eternal throne—but David stole another man’s wife.

• God gave Peter the keys to heaven—but Peter denied the Lord.

God intended our lives to be blessed and victorious, but we each turned to our own way.

두번째 우리의 인생은 ‘기억하소서’의 인생입니다.  

시편 기자는 이 원리를 알고 있었던 것 같습니다. 주의 노(46)라는 표현은 이스라엘의 범죄를 전제로 하는 표현입니다. 인생은 원래 “그러나”의 인생임을, 즉 하나님의 뜻과 상반되게 가는 죄인임을 고백합니다.

그래서 그는 인생은 짧고 고난이 길면 버틸 재간이 없음(47, 48)을 노래합니다.

시인은 주님께 애타게 부르짖습니다!

주의 노는 언제까지니이까(46절), 인자하심이 어디 있나이까(49절), 우리의 연약함을 기억하소서(47, 50절)

시인의 이 부르짖음이 오늘 나의 기도가 되기를 원합니다.

우리 인생에는 어떤 이유에서 기인했던 원하지 않는 고통의 순간들이 닥칩니다. 아마도 대부분은 우리의 죄와 실수, 선택의 결과일 것입니다. 그렇습니다. 우리 인생은 하나님이 복을 주시기로 약속하셨지만, 그것을 스스로 거절하는 ‘그러나’의 인생입니다. 그래서 우리 스스로에게는 소망이 없습니다.

하지만 하나님은 항상 우리의 연약함, 우리가 진흙으로 지어진 존재임을 기억하십니다. 역사속에서 하나님이 연약한 인생을 기억하시고, 당신의 거룩한 언약을 기억하실 때 항상 구원의 역사가 일어났습니다. 오늘도 연약한 우리를 기억해주시기를 기도합니다. 

2. The “Remember” Life

The psalmist seems to understand this principle.The phrase “Your wrath” (v. 46) presupposes Israel’s sin.He acknowledges that life is a “but” life—that is, one that goes against God’s will.He sings that life is short and cannot endure long suffering (vv. 47–48).He cries out passionately:

• How long, O Lord? (v. 46)

• Where is Your steadfast love? (v. 49)

• Remember our frailty (vv. 47, 50)

May this desperate cry of the psalmist become our prayer today.In life, we face unwanted suffering—often caused by our sin, mistakes, and choices.Indeed, our lives were meant for blessing, but we rejected that with our own actions.So there’s no hope within ourselves.

But God always remembers our frailty—He knows we are dust.And whenever, in history, God remembered fragile humanity and His holy covenant, salvation followed.

Let us pray today that God would remember us again in our weakness.
