87:1 그의 터전이 성산에 있음이여

87:2 여호와께서 야곱의 모든 거처보다 시온의 문들을 사랑하시는도다

1 He has founded his city on the holy mountain.

2 The Lord loves the gates of Zion

    more than all the other dwellings of Jacob.

87:3 하나님의 성이여 너를 가리켜 영광스럽다 말하는도다 (셀라)

87:4 나는 라합과 바벨론이 나를 아는 자 중에 있다 말하리라 보라 블레셋과 두로와 구스여 이것들도 거기서 났다 하리로다

87:5 시온에 대하여 말하기를 이 사람, 저 사람이 거기서 났다고 말하리니 지존자가 친히 시온을 세우리라 하는도다

87:6 여호와께서 민족들을 등록하실 때에는 그 수를 세시며 이 사람이 거기서 났다 하시리로다 (셀라)

3 Glorious things are said of you,

    city of God:

4 “I will record Rahab and Babylon

    among those who acknowledge me—

Philistia too, and Tyre, along with Cush—

    and will say, ‘This one was born in Zion.’”

5 Indeed, of Zion it will be said,

    “This one and that one were born in her,

    and the Most High himself will establish her.”

6 The Lord will write in the register of the peoples:

    “This one was born in Zion.”

87:7 노래하는 자와 뛰어 노는 자들이 말하기를 나의 모든 근원이 네게 있다 하리로다

7 As they make music they will sing,

    “All my fountains are in you.”

            여러분은 마음의 고향이 있으십니까? 여러분이 가장 그리워하고 돌아가고 싶어하는 장소는 어디인가요? 그곳은 여러분에게 어떤 의미인가요? 저는 제 마음의 고향이 한국인 줄 알았습니다. 그런데 제가 타향살이를 너무 오래했나봅니다. 제가 첫 유학 생활을 시작했던 곳, 그리고 첫 결혼생활을 시작했던 보스턴이 제게는 마음의 고향이 아닌가 싶습니다. 내일이 독립기념일인데 보스턴에 있을 때 저희 가족은 늘 마블헤드라고 하는 항구도시로 가서 등대 밑에 앉아서 바닷가 선상에서 쏘아올리는 불꽃놀이를 보았던 기억이 납니다. 빨간색으로 점등을 한 항구에서 보는 불꽃놀이는 그렇게 아름다울 수가 없었지요. 이렇듯 잊어보려고 해도 문득문득 기억이나는 장소, 우리 모두에게는 그렇게 우리가 사랑하고 그리워하고 돌아가고 싶어하는 장소가 있습니다. 오늘 본문 말씀을 보니 하나님께도 그렇게 하나님이 사랑하시는 장소가 있으신 것 같습니다. 그 장소를 오늘 말씀은 시온이라고 적고 있지요. 그리고 하나님께서는 당신이 사랑하시는 그 시온성으로 모든 백성과 민족을 부르십니다. 오늘은 하나님이 사랑하시는 성, 시온이라는 제목으로 말씀을 전하기 원합니다.

Do you have a spiritual home in your heart? Where is the place you miss the most, the place you long to return to? What does that place mean to you? I used to think my spiritual home was Korea. But perhaps I've lived away from home for too long. I now wonder if my spiritual home isn't Boston, the place where I first began my studies abroad and where I started my married life. Tomorrow is Independence Day, and I remember that when we were in Boston, our family always went to a harbor town called Marblehead. We'd sit under the lighthouse and watch the fireworks launched from boats on the water. The fireworks viewed from that red-lit harbor were incredibly beautiful. Just like that, there are places we try to forget but suddenly remember, places we all love, miss, and long to return to. Today's scripture tells us that God also has such a beloved place. This passage calls that place Zion. And God calls all peoples and nations to that beloved city of Zion. Today, I want to share a message titled, "Zion, The City God Loves."

            첫번째 시온은 하나님이 사랑하시는 곳입니다. 오늘 말씀 1-3절은 시온의 특별한 지위와 영광에 대해 말하고 있습니다. 그 시온이 어떤 곳입니까? 먼저 하나님께서 임재하시는 곳입니다. 1절 말씀입니다. “그의 터전이 성산에 있음이여.” 하나님께서 거룩한 산에 터를 지으셨다고 합니다. 터를 짓는 것은 그 위에 집을 짓기 위함이지요. 바로 하나님께서 계실 곳을 이곳으로 정하셨다는 뜻입니다. 하나님께서 거할 곳이기에 거룩한 산, 성산이라고 부르고 있는 것이지요. 2절에서도 하나님께서는 이스라엘의 다른 어떤 도시들보다 시온을 선택하시고 그 시온을 사랑하셨다고 말하고 있습니다. 여호와께서 야곱의 모든 거처보다 시온의 문들을 사랑하시는도다라고 전하고 있지 않습니까? 여기서 시온의 문들이란 시온을 지키는 성벽의 문을 가리키는 것으로 시온이 하나님의 완전한 보호 아래에 놓여있음을 전하고 있습니다. 3절에서는 시온성을 가르켜 하나님의 성이여라고 부르고 있지요. 그리고 2인칭을 써서 너라고 시온성을 지칭하고 있습니다. 원래 고대 근동의 사람들은 신이란 어떤 특정한 지역에 종속되어 있는 존재라는 신학을 가지고 있었습니다. 열왕기상 20:28에도 “아람 사람이 말하기를 여호와는 산의 신이요 골짜기의 신은 아니라 하는도다” 라고 이야기하는 장면이 나오지요. 그때에 하나님께서 “그러므로 내가 이 큰 군대를 다 네 손에 넘기리니 너희는 내가 여호와인 줄을 알리라”라고 말씀하시는 장면이 나옵니다. 오늘 말씀에도 하나님께서는 성산, 즉 시온산에 대해서 말씀하시지만 하나님께서 그 산에 종속되어 계신 분이 아니지요. 3절에서 “하나님의 성이여”라고 하는 것은 바로 하나님께 주권이 있음을 고백하는 것이지요. 하나님이 당신이 원하시는 곳을 선택하신 것입니다. 그래서 그 성을 향하여 너를 가리켜 영광스럽다 말한다고 하지 않습니까? 바로 하나님께서 선택하셨고 터를 닦으셨으며 사랑하시고 보호하시는 그 곳이 시온성이라는 말씀입니다. 그렇다면 하나님께서 시온을 왜 사랑하시고 시온이란 어떤 곳인지 조금 더 살펴보기 원합니다.

1. Zion: The Place God Loves

First, Zion is the place God loves. Today's passage, verses 1-3, speaks of Zion's special status and glory. What kind of place is Zion? First, it's where God is present. Look at verse 1: "His foundation is on the holy mountain." It says that God established His dwelling on a holy mountain. To lay a foundation is to build a house upon it. This means God chose this place as His abode. Because it is where God dwells, it's called a holy mountain, a sacred mountain. In verse 2, it also states that God chose and loved Zion above all other cities of Israel. Doesn't it say, "The Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob"? Here, "the gates of Zion" refers to the gates of the wall protecting Zion, conveying that Zion is under God's complete protection. In verse 3, Zion is referred to as "the city of God." It even uses the second person, addressing Zion as "you." In ancient Near Eastern cultures, people typically held a theology that gods were confined to specific regions. In 1 Kings 20:28, it says, "The Arameans said, 'The Lord is a god of the hills and not a god of the valleys.'" Then God says, "Therefore I will give all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the Lord." Today's passage also speaks of a holy mountain, Mount Zion, but God is not bound to that mountain. When verse 3 says, "The city of God," it is an affirmation of God's sovereignty. God chose the place He desired. That's why it says, "Glorious things are said of you!" This means Zion is the city that God chose, established, loves, and protects. Now, let's explore a bit more why God loves Zion and what kind of place Zion truly is.

            두번째, 하나님은 시온으로 모든 백성과 민족을 부르십니다. 4절 함께 읽겠습니다. “나는 라합과 바벨론이 나를 아는 자 중에 있다 말하리라 보라 블레셋과 두로와 구스여 이것들도 거기서 났다 하리로다.” 여기서 말하고 있는 라합은 기생 라합을 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 이 라합은 대게 혼돈과 악의 세력을 상징하는 바다괴물 즉 리워야단과 같은 의미로 사용되어 여기서는 애굽을 지칭하는 말입니다. 이사야 30:7에서 “내가 애굽을 가만히 앉은 라합이라 일컬었느니라”라고 하는 말씀이 나오지요. 즉, 4절 말씀에서 나오는 민족들의 리스트는 모두 이스라엘의 적대국들을 나열하고 있는 것이지요. 애굽, 바벨론, 블레셋, 두로와 구스. 그런데 하나님께서 이들을 가르켜 나를 아는 자 중에 있다 말하리라라고 하십니다. 이것들도 거기서, 즉 시온에서 났다 하리로다 라고 말씀하십니다. 5절의 말씀은 4절의 말씀을 다시 한번 확정하고 있습니다. “시온에 대하여 말하기를 이사람, 저 사람이 거기서 났다고 말하리니 지존자가 친히 시온을 세우리라 하는도다” 적대국들 조차, 이방들조차 시온의 시민이 되는 것을 넘어서 시온에서 태어난 자로 여겨질 것이라는 놀라운 선언입니다. 이 모든 것은 어떻게 가능한 것입니까? 지존자이신 하나님께서 시온을 세우심으로 가능한 일입니다. 6절도 마찬가지입니다. 민족들을 등록하신다고 하십니다. 이는 주민등록, 즉 이들 또한 하나님의 백성이 된다는 말씀이지요. 단순히 이민을 와서 영주권을 얻는 신분의 변화가 아니라 그들을 시온에서 나고 자란 사람처럼 이들에게 시민권을 부여하고 이들이 원래 하나님의 백성이였던 이스라엘 백성들과 차별없이 당신의 백성으로 삼으신다는 말씀이 아니겠습니까? 하나님께서 시온을 선택하시고 사랑하시는 이유는 바로 이처럼 시온으로 모든 백성과 민족을 부르시기 때문입니다. 하나님께서는 이스라엘의 대적들 조차도 당신께 돌아오기를 원하시는 것입니다. 사람들은 구약의 하나님이 이스라엘만을 위한다고 잘 못 알고 있습니다. 그러나 하나님의 복음은 구약시대나 신약시대를 불문하고 모든 민족을 향하고 있는 것입니다. 그것이 바로 하나님께서 시온 성, 예루살렘을 선택하시고 사랑하시는 이유인 것입니다.

2. God Calls All Peoples and Nations to Zion

Second, God calls all peoples and nations to Zion. Let's read verse 4 together: "I will record Rahab and Babylon among those who acknowledge me—Philistia, Tyre and Cush—and say, 'This one was born in Zion.'" Here, "Rahab" does not refer to the prostitute Rahab. This Rahab typically symbolizes chaos and evil forces, like a sea monster or Leviathan, and here it designates Egypt. Isaiah 30:7 says, "I call her Rahab the Do-Nothing." So, the list of nations in verse 4 comprises Israel's adversaries: Egypt, Babylon, Philistia, Tyre, and Cush. Yet, God says of them, "They are among those who acknowledge me." And He declares, "This one was born there," meaning in Zion. Verse 5 confirms the message of verse 4: "Indeed, of Zion it will be said, 'This one and that one were born in her, and the Most High himself will establish her.'" This is an astonishing declaration: even adversaries, even Gentiles, will not merely become citizens of Zion but will be regarded as born in Zion. How is all this possible? It's possible because the Most High God Himself will establish Zion. Verse 6 is similar. It says He will register the nations. This refers to a census, meaning they too will become God's people. This isn't just a change of status, like an immigrant gaining permanent residency; it's about God granting them citizenship as if they were born and raised in Zion, treating them without discrimination, just like His original people, Israel. The reason God chose and loved Zion is precisely this: to call all peoples and nations to Zion. God desires even Israel's adversaries to return to Him. People often mistakenly believe that the God of the Old Testament was only concerned with Israel. However, God's gospel, regardless of the Old or New Testament era, is directed toward all nations. That is why God chose and loved the city of Zion, Jerusalem.

            말씀을 맺습니다. 하나님의 사랑은 예나 지금이나 똑같이 모든 백성을 향해 흐릅니다. 구약에서 만 백성을 부르시는 곳이 시온성이라면 현대를 살아가는 우리에게는 그것이 바로 교회인 줄 믿습니다. 하나님께서 그렇게 시온을 사랑하셨던 것처럼 우리도 교회를 사랑해야하는 줄 믿습니다. 하나님께서 부르시는 만 백성이 교회로 돌아올 때에 우리 또한 7절 말씀처럼 노래하며 뛰어놀고 함께 즐거워 할 줄 믿습니다. 우리에게도 하나님의 마음과 같이 우리의 시온, 교회를 사랑하는 마음을 달라고 함께 기도하시기 원합니다.

Conclusion

To conclude: God's love, then as now, flows equally towards all people. If in the Old Testament, Zion was the place where all nations were called, then for us living today, I believe that place is the church. Just as God loved Zion, I believe we too must love the church. When all the peoples God calls return to the church, I believe we too will sing, dance, and rejoice together, just as in verse 7. Let's pray together that God will give us a heart like His, a heart that loves our Zion, the church.
