20250702 [새벽묵상] 고난중에 드리는 확신에 찬 기도 | Trusting God in Times of Trouble (시/Ps 86:1~17)

1 Hear me, Lord, and answer me,

    for I am poor and needy.

2 Guard my life, for I am faithful to you;

    save your servant who trusts in you.

You are my God; 3 have mercy on me, Lord,

    for I call to you all day long.

4 Bring joy to your servant, Lord,

    for I put my trust in you.

5 You, Lord, are forgiving and good,

    abounding in love to all who call to you.

6 Hear my prayer, Lord;

    listen to my cry for mercy.

7 When I am in distress, I call to you,

    because you answer me.

8 Among the gods there is none like you, Lord;

    no deeds can compare with yours.

9 All the nations you have made

    will come and worship before you, Lord;

    they will bring glory to your name.

10 For you are great and do marvelous deeds;

    you alone are God.

11 Teach me your way, Lord,

    that I may rely on your faithfulness;

give me an undivided heart,

    that I may fear your name.

12 I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart;

    I will glorify your name forever.

13 For great is your love toward me;

    you have delivered me from the depths,

    from the realm of the dead.

14 Arrogant foes are attacking me, O God;

    ruthless people are trying to kill me—

    they have no regard for you.

15 But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God,

    slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.

16 Turn to me and have mercy on me;

    show your strength in behalf of your servant;

save me, because I serve you

    just as my mother did.

17 Give me a sign of your goodness,

    that my enemies may see it and be put to shame,

    for you, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.

There are many types of psalms in the book of Psalms. Among them are psalms of praise, which glorify God, and psalms of wisdom, which teach the importance of God's laws, similar to Proverbs. However, the largest portion of the Psalms consists of prayers. These are where the psalmist earnestly cries out to God, seeking help in times of suffering, illness, persecution, or sin. Today's passage, Psalm 86, is a prime example of such a prayer. Specifically, it can be seen as a personal lament, expressing the speaker's individual pain and plea. If the Bible only contained happy stories of perfect people, we probably wouldn't feel any deep connection when reading it. But when we see a speaker, like ourselves, seeking God in the midst of hardship, we feel a sense of solidarity. And seeing such a psalmist helps us realize what we should do in times of tribulation. What is it? It is to depend on God. The psalmist in today's passage, though earnestly seeking God in trouble, had a conviction in his heart that God was the one who would help and comfort him. Yes, it's the same for us. When hardship comes, we too must approach God with prayers full of conviction.

First, In Trouble, We Must Rely on God.

A prayer of conviction offered in times of trouble. Let's read verse 1 together: "Incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy." The speaker clearly understood his situation. When trouble struck, he did not try to resolve it with his own strength or ability. The "poor and needy" mentioned here refers more to a spiritual poverty – being oppressed, suffering, miserable – rather than material poverty. The conviction he held in his time of trouble was not that he would definitely overcome this difficulty himself. It was the conviction that when he humbled himself before God and sought God's answer, God would indeed respond to him. Let's read verse 2 together: "Preserve my soul, for I am godly; O my God, save your servant who trusts in you!" The psalmist describes himself as "godly." It might seem strange how a sinful human could so boldly declare themselves godly. However, we can understand from verse 5 that his use of "godly" is not an assertion of his own righteousness, as he uses language that implies his sinfulness in that verse: "For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving." So, what is the basis for the psalmist's claim of godliness? It is in the latter half of verse 2: "save your servant who trusts in you." In other words, his godliness is a claim he can make not by relying on his sinful self, but by relying on the Lord. From verses 1 to 7, he continually seeks God's help. Verse 1, "answer me." Verse 2, "save your servant." Verse 3, "be gracious to me." Verse 4, "gladden the soul of your servant." Verse 6, "hear the voice of my pleas." Now, in verse 7, the tone shifts slightly. Let's read verse 7 together: "In the day of my trouble I call upon you, for you will answer me." Do you see the difference? Before, it was consistently "be gracious," "help," "plea." But in verse 7, the psalmist's mindset has changed. "You will answer me." That is, he has a conviction about the answer. Having relied on God in trouble, the psalmist now has confidence in God's response.

Second, When You Rely on God, You Will Come to Know Who God Is.

Now, verses 8 through 13 convey what the psalmist, having gained such conviction, came to understand. What is it? It is that he understood who God is. What does he confess in verse 10? He confesses, "You alone are God." Verses 8, 9, and 10 are a confession about a universal God. Verse 8, "There is none like you among the gods, O Lord." Verse 9, "All the nations you have made shall come and bow before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name." The psalmist, in prayer, once again realized how great God is. This is similar to the scene in the book of Job where God appeared to Job in his suffering and spoke of His greatness, reminding us of God's omnipotence, wisdom, and majesty as Creator. It was when he realized this greatness of God that the psalmist confessed, as we shared earlier, in verse 10, "You alone are God." He clearly started this psalm by saying, "I am poor, answer me," but now he is confessing, "You alone are God." When he realized God's complete sovereignty over his life, he began to seek something different. Verse 11: Let's read it together: "Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name." The psalmist's heart changed. He resolved to walk in God's truth and to fear the Lord with an undivided heart. Didn't he say earlier in verse 9 that "all the nations... shall glorify your name"? In verse 12, he confesses, "I will give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever." The Creator God of verse 9 has become my God in verse 12. The God he confessed earlier was the universal Creator God. So great and mighty that it might seem He would not pay attention to someone as poor and needy as him. However, verses 12 and 13 speak of that great God as being my God, the one who indeed cares for him. Let's read verse 13 together: "For great is your steadfast love toward me; you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol." That great God extends great steadfast love to someone poor and needy like him. He had conviction. "You have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol." It's not "you will deliver." He is declaring something yet to be accomplished as if it has already happened, with full conviction. "You have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol." In his suffering, he prayed to God with conviction.

Conclusion

Let me conclude. The psalmist today found himself in a situation just like ours – poor and needy. In that trouble, he relied on God and sought God's answer. At that time, he gained conviction about God's response, and this made him remember once again who God is. He realized anew that the great, universal God is the one who cares for him, the poor and needy. That is why he could confess, as in verse 17, "You, O Lord, are my helper and my comforter." Beloved, do not give up. Do not rely on yourselves, but rely on God. When you earnestly seek God's answer, that great God will help and comfort you. May you be those who pray with conviction in God even in times of trouble. I bless you in the name of the Lord.
