85:1 여호와여 주께서 주의 땅에 은혜를 베푸사 야곱의 포로 된 자들이 돌아오게 하셨으며

85:2 주의 백성의 죄악을 사하시고 그들의 모든 죄를 덮으셨나이다 (셀라)

85:3 주의 모든 분노를 거두시며 주의 진노를 돌이키셨나이다

1 You, Lord, showed favor to your land;

    you restored the fortunes of Jacob.

2 You forgave the iniquity of your people

    and covered all their sins.

3 You set aside all your wrath

    and turned from your fierce anger.

85:4 우리 구원의 하나님이여 우리를 돌이키시고 우리에게 향하신 주의 분노를 거두소서

85:5 주께서 우리에게 영원히 노하시며 대대에 진노하시겠나이까

85:6 주께서 우리를 다시 살리사 주의 백성이 주를 기뻐하도록 하지 아니하시겠나이까

85:7 여호와여 주의 인자하심을 우리에게 보이시며 주의 구원을 우리에게 주소서

4 Restore us again, God our Savior,

    and put away your displeasure toward us.

5 Will you be angry with us forever?

    Will you prolong your anger through all generations?

6 Will you not revive us again,

    that your people may rejoice in you?

7 Show us your unfailing love, Lord,

    and grant us your salvation.

85:8 내가 하나님 여호와께서 하실 말씀을 들으리니 무릇 그의 백성, 그의 성도들에게 화평을 말씀하실 것이라 그들은 다시 어리석은 데로 돌아가지 말지로다

85:9 진실로 그의 구원이 그를 경외하는 자에게 가까우니 영광이 우리 땅에 머무르리이다

8 I will listen to what God the Lord says;

    he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants—

    but let them not turn to folly.

9 Surely his salvation is near those who fear him,

    that his glory may dwell in our land.

85:10 인애와 진리가 같이 만나고 의와 화평이 서로 입맞추었으며

85:11 진리는 땅에서 솟아나고 의는 하늘에서 굽어보도다

85:12 여호와께서 좋은 것을 주시리니 우리 땅이 그 산물을 내리로다

85:13 의가 주의 앞에 앞서 가며 주의 길을 닦으리로다

10 Love and faithfulness meet together;

    righteousness and peace kiss each other.

11 Faithfulness springs forth from the earth,

    and righteousness looks down from heaven.

12 The Lord will indeed give what is good,

    and our land will yield its harvest.

13 Righteousness goes before him

    and prepares the way for his steps.

                  제가 군대에 이제 막 입대했을 때의 이야기입니다. 처음에 입대를 하면 분명히 이발을 하고 갔는데도 머리를 다 밀어버립니다. 그리고 입대 할 때에 입었던 옷들을 다 벗어서 집으로 보내는 장정소포라고 하는 박스에 넣고 군복으로 갈아입지요. 그 모습이 얼마나 어색했는지요. 머리는 까까머리에 생소한 군복을 입은 제 모습이 참 서글펐던 기억이 납니다. 그렇게 이름도 아닌 61번 훈련병으로 불리면서 군사 훈련을 받고 있으면 어찌나 부모님 생각이 나던지요. 군대라는 혹독한 환경 가운데 처했을 때에야 비로소 내가 얼마나 큰 보호 아래에 있었는지를 깨닫게 되었던 것 같습니다. 특히 밥먹는 속도가 느렸던 저는 군대에서 5분 안에 밥을 못먹는다고 구박을 받는 것이 그렇게 서글프더라구요. 다른 건 몰라도 밥은 제대로 먹게 해줘야 할 것 아닙니까? 그럴때마다 어머니가 차려주셨던 밥상을 바쁘다고 제대로 먹지도 않고 남기곤 했던 기억이 나서 어머님께 얼마나 죄송했는지 모릅니다. 오늘 시편의 기자도 마찬가지인 것 같습니다. 그는 하나님께서 과거에 은혜를 베푸셨던 것을 기억합니다. 어떻게 하나님께서 백성의 죄를 사하시고 분노를 거두셨는지를 기억합니다. 그리고 황폐해진 땅 위에 서있는 그는 지금 하나님께 다시 그때처럼 분노를 거두어달라고 간청하고 있습니다. 그는 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 순종할 때에 하나님께서 당신의 성품을 따라 행하실 것을 믿고 있습니다. 비록 그들이 죄를 범하여 그 땅이 황폐해졌을지라도 하나님께서는 당신의 성품을 따라 그들에게 화평을 회복시키리라 믿고 있었던 것입니다. 오늘은 황폐한 땅에서 간구하는 하나님의 샬롬이라는 제목으로 말씀을 전하기 원합니다.

It’s a story from when I first enlisted in the military. When you first join, even if you’ve already cut your hair, they shave it all off. And all the clothes you wore when you enlisted are put into a box, called a “recruit package,” to be sent home, and you change into a military uniform. How awkward I felt then. I remember feeling so sad, seeing myself with a shaved head in an unfamiliar military uniform. As I was called “Trainee 61” instead of my name and went through military training, I missed my parents so much. It was only when I was in the harsh environment of the military that I finally realized how much protection I had been under. Especially for me, a slow eater, it was so disheartening to be scolded for not finishing my meal within 5 minutes in the military. Whatever else, shouldn't they let us eat properly? Each time, I remembered how I used to rush and leave my mother’s home-cooked meals unfinished, and I felt so sorry to her.

The psalmist today seems to be in a similar situation. He remembers that God showed favor in the past. He remembers how God forgave the people's sins and turned away His wrath. Now, standing on a desolate land, he is pleading with God to turn away His wrath once again, just like before. He believes that when he listens to God's word and obeys, God will act according to His character. Even though they sinned and their land became desolate, he believed that God, according to His character, would restore peace to them. Today, I want to share a message titled "God's Shalom Blooming in a Desolate Land."

                  오늘 본문은 3절과 4절을 보면 쉽게 이해가 되질 않습니다. 3절에서는 주의 모든 분노를 거두시며 라고 전하고 있는데 4절에서는 우리에게 향하신 주의 분노를 거두소서 라고 말하고 있습니다. 하나님이 한 입으로 두 말씀 하시는 분도 아닌데 이상합니다. 자, 그런데 가만히 보면 시제가 다르지요. 여기서 우리는 1-3절 말씀이 화자가 기억하는 하나님 즉, 과거를 이야기하는 것임을 알 수 있습니다. 과거에 하나님께서 무엇을 행하셨습니까? 1절 한번 같이 읽겠습니다. “여호와여 주께서 주의 땅에 은혜를 베푸사 야곱의 포로된 자들이 돌아오게 하셨으며” 주께서 주의 땅에 은혜를 베푸셨다고 합니다. 사람에게 은혜를 베푸셨다, 주의 백성에게 은혜를 베푸셨다가 아니라 주의 땅에 은혜를 베푸셨다고 합니다. 왜 가장 처음에 땅을 언급하는 것일까요? 그것은 바로 이들이 4-5절에 적혀있듯이 하나님의 진노 즉, 가뭄이나 흉작과 같은 어려움 가운데에 있기 때문입니다. 그렇다면 그 원인은 무엇입니까? 4절을 한 번 같이 읽겠습니다. “우리 구원의 하나님이여 우리를 돌이키시고 우리에게 향하신 주의 분노를 거두소서.” 과거를 회상한 현재의 화자가 하나님께 간구하는 그 첫번째가 바로 “우리 구원의 하나님이여 우리를 돌이키시고” 라고 합니다. 이것은 무슨 말입니까? 이들이 하나님으로부터 멀어졌다는 뜻입니다. 자 1절에서 이스라엘이 포로가 되었던 원인이 무엇입니까? 그들의 죄악 때문이었습니다. 그러나 하나님께서는 그들을 돌아오게 하셨습니다. 2절에서 그들의 죄악을 사하시고 그들의 죄를 덮으셨습니다. 4절 하반절에 무어라고 말하고 있습니까? 우리에게 향하신 주의 분노를 거두소서. 3절은 무엇이라고 말하고 있습니까? 주의 모든 분노, 주의 진노를 돌이키셨나이다. 화자가 4-5절까지 간구하고 있는 내용은 바로 1-3절에서 있었던 하나님께서 주의 땅에 은혜를 베푸셨던 것을 다시 한번 허락해 달라고 간청하고 있는 것입니다. 당신의 백성의 죄악을 사하시고 진노를 거두어달라고 간청하고 있는 것입니다. 그렇다면 그는 진노 아래에서 이 황폐한 땅에서 어떻게 하나님께 이렇게 간청 할 수 있는 것입니까? 첫번째는 방금 말씀 드렸던 것처럼 하나님께서 행하셨던 일을 기억하는 것이었습니다. 그리고 두번째는 바로 하나님의 성품을 믿고 순종하는 것입니다.

Today's passage isn't easy to understand if we only look at verses 3 and 4. Verse 3 states, "You turned from all your fierce anger," but verse 4 says, "Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause your indignation toward us to cease." It seems strange, as if God is speaking out of both sides of His mouth. But if you look closely, the tenses are different. Here, we can understand that verses 1-3 talk about the God the psalmist remembers, meaning the past. What did God do in the past? Let's read verse 1 together: "Lord, you showed favor to your land; you restored the fortunes of Jacob." It says He showed favor to His land. Not that He showed favor to people, or to His people, but to His land. Why does it mention the land first? It's because, as written in verses 4-5, they are currently in the midst of God's wrath, experiencing hardships like drought or famine.

So, what's the cause of that? Let's read verse 4 together: "Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause your indignation toward us to cease." The psalmist, now recalling the past, makes his first plea to God: "O God of our salvation, turn us." What does this mean? It means they have distanced themselves from God. Now, what was the reason Israel went into exile in verse 1? It was because of their sins. But God brought them back. In verse 2, He forgave their iniquity and covered their sins. What does the latter part of verse 4 say? "Cause your indignation toward us to cease." And what does verse 3 say? "You turned from all your fierce anger." The content of the psalmist's plea in verses 4-5 is to ask God to grant again what He had done in verses 1-3 when He showed favor to His land. He is pleading for God to forgive His people's sins and turn away His wrath. How, then, can he plead with God like this in this desolate land under wrath? The first reason, as I just mentioned, was remembering what God had done. And the second is believing in and obeying God's character.

                  5절, 영원히 노하시며 대대에 진노하시겠나이까? 무슨 말입니까? 그렇지 않다는 말씀이지요. 6절 “주께서 우리를 다시 살리사 주의 백성이 주를 기뻐하도록 하지 아니하시겠나이까?” 그렇게 하신다는 말씀이지요. 7절에 그것을 무어라고 하고 있습니까? 바로 주의 인자하심, 주의 구원이라고 표현하고 있습니다. 화자는 하나님의 성품이 어떤 것인지를 알고 있었습니다. 그래서 비록 지금은 하나님의 진노 아래 황폐한 땅 위에 서있는 것처럼 느껴질지 몰라도 하나님께서는 당신의 인자하심을 따라 구원하시리라 믿어 의심치 않는 것입니다. 그 인자하심을 구할 때에 그가 하는 행동이 무엇입니까? 바로8절, 함께 읽겠습니다. “내가 하나님 여호와께서 하실 말씀을 들으리니 무릇 그의 백성, 그의 성도들에게 화평을 말씀하실 것이라 그들은 다시 어리석은 데로 돌아가지 말지로다” 내가 하나님께서 하실 말씀을 들으리니. 말씀을 듣는다. 곧 말씀에 순종한다는 말이기도 합니다. 지금까지 ‘주의 백성,’ ‘우리를’ 이라고 지칭하던 화자가 여기서 ‘내가’ 라는 말을 씁니다. 이 시편 85편이이 ‘고라자손의 시, 인도자를 따라 부르는 노래’ 라는 것을 기억한다면 바로 이 대목이 모든이가 자신의 입으로 따라 부르며 고백하는 장면이 될 것입니다. 내가 여호와께서 하실 말씀을 들으리니, 순종하리니. 하나님께 다시 돌아가는 것입니다. 하나님이여 우리를 돌이키시고 라고 외쳤던 4절의 그 첫 간구가 이루어지는 순간인 것입니다. 바로 그때에 8절은 어떤 일이 일어난다고 말하고 있습니까? 무릇 그의 백성, 그의 성도들에게 화평을 말씀하실 것이라. 그의 백성이 그의 성도가 되었습니다. 그리고 하나님의 화평 샬롬이 그들에게 전해질 것입니다. 이제 그들은 그들이 범죄하였던 것처럼 어리석은 데로 돌아가지 않을 것입니다. 왜입니까? 9절 하나님의 구원이 그를 경외하는 자에게 가까우니 하나님의 영광이 우리 땅에 머무르리이다. 이게 무슨 말입니까? 하나님의 말씀을 듣는자, 그 말씀에 순종하는 자가 곧 하나님을 경외하는 자라는 것입니다. 그리고 그렇게 하나님을 경외하는 자에게 하나님의 구원이 가깝다고 하는 것입니다. 그런데 그 구원이 무엇이라구요? 하나님의 영광이 우리 땅에 머무른다. 즉, 하나님의 임재가 당신의 백성, 우리 가운데 거하시며 또한 땅을 회복시키신다는 것입니다.

Verse 5: "Will you be angry with us forever? Will you prolong your anger through all generations?" What does that mean? It means He will not. Verse 6: "Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?" It means He will. What is it called in verse 7? It's called Your steadfast love and Your salvation. The psalmist knew God's character. So, even though it might feel like they are standing on a desolate land under God's wrath right now, he firmly believes that God will save them according to His steadfast love. What does he do when he seeks that steadfast love? Verse 8, let's read it together: "I will listen to what God the Lord will say; he promises peace to his people, his faithful ones—but let them not return to folly." "I will listen to what God the Lord will say." To listen to the word also means to obey the word. The psalmist, who had been referring to "His people," and "us," now uses "I" here. If we remember that Psalm 85 is "A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. For the director of music," then this very passage would be a scene where everyone sings and confesses with their own mouths. "I will listen to what the Lord will say," meaning, "I will obey." It is returning to God. It is the moment when the first plea in verse 4, "O God, turn us," is fulfilled. And what happens at that time, according to verse 8? "He promises peace to his people, his faithful ones." His people become His faithful ones. And God's peace, His shalom, will be delivered to them. Now, they will not return to folly, as they had sinned before. Why? Verse 9: "Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land." What does this mean? It means that those who listen to God's word and obey that word are those who fear God. And it says that God's salvation is near to those who fear Him. And what is that salvation? It is that God's glory will dwell in our land. That is, God's presence will dwell among His people, among us, and also restore the land.

                  말씀을 맺습니다. 이렇게 하나님과의 관계가 회복 될 때에 하나님의 성품들이 우리의 삶과 우리의 삶의 터전위에 샬롬을 이루는 것입니다. 그것이 바로 10-13절까지의 내용입니다. 그중 11절, 진리는 땅에서 솟아나고. 12절 여호와께서 좋은 것을 주시리니 우리 땅이 그 산물을 내리로다. 이는 앞에서 말씀드렸던 우리의 범죄로 말미암아 황폐했던 땅이 하나님의 샬롬으로 회복되는 것을 의미합니다. 1절 여호와여 주께서 주의 땅에 은혜를 베푸사. 하나님의 진노가 임하여 우리의 땅이 황폐해졌을지라도 우리가 하나님께 순종하면 하나님의 화평이 우리 뿐만 아니라 우리의 기업, 우리의 땅에 임하는 것입니다. 그래서 좋은 산물을 우리에게 주시는 것입니다. 혹시 지금 하나님의 진노아래에 계신 것 같은 분이 계십니까? 하나님이 과거에 행하셨던 일들을 기억하십시오. 하나님의 성품을 기억하십시오. 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 순종하십시오. 반드시 하나님께서 당신의 영광으로 여러분의 땅에 머무르실 것입니다. 좋은 것을 주실 것입니다. 여러분의 땅이 그 산물을 낼 것입니다. 그때에 여러분이 주의 앞에 앞서가며 주님의 길을 닦는 그의 성도 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 기도하시겠습니다.   

Let me conclude. When this relationship with God is restored, God's attributes bring shalom upon our lives and upon our dwelling places. That is the content of verses 10-13. Among them, verse 11: "Truth springs forth from the earth." Verse 12: "The Lord will indeed give what is good, and our land will yield its increase." This signifies the restoration of the land, which was desolate due to our sin, by God's shalom. Verse 1: "Lord, you showed favor to your land." Even if our land has become desolate due to God's wrath, if we obey God, God's peace will come upon us, not just us, but also upon our inheritance, our land. And so, He will give us good produce. Is there anyone here who feels like they are currently under God's wrath? Remember what God has done in the past. Remember God's character. Listen to God's word and obey. God will surely dwell in your land with His glory. He will give you good things. Your land will yield its increase. At that time, I pray in the name of the Lord that you may become His faithful ones who go before the Lord and prepare His way. Let us pray.
