84:1 만군의 여호와여 주의 장막이 어찌 그리 사랑스러운지요

84:2 내 영혼이 여호와의 궁정을 사모하여 쇠약함이여 내 마음과 육체가 살아 계시는 하나님께 부르짖나이다

84:3 나의 왕, 나의 하나님, 만군의 여호와여 주의 제단에서 참새도 제 집을 얻고 제비도 새끼 둘 보금자리를 얻었나이다

84:4 주의 집에 사는 자들은 복이 있나니 그들이 항상 주를 찬송하리이다 (셀라)

1 How lovely is your dwelling place,

    Lord Almighty!

2 My soul yearns, even faints,

    for the courts of the Lord;

my heart and my flesh cry out

    for the living God.

3 Even the sparrow has found a home,

    and the swallow a nest for herself,

    where she may have her young—

a place near your altar,

    Lord Almighty, my King and my God.

4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house;

    they are ever praising you.

84:5 주께 힘을 얻고 그 마음에 시온의 대로가 있는 자는 복이 있나이다

84:6 그들이 눈물 골짜기로 지나갈 때에 그 곳에 많은 샘이 있을 것이며 이른 비가 복을 채워 주나이다

84:7 그들은 힘을 얻고 더 얻어 나아가 시온에서 하나님 앞에 각기 나타나리이다

5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you,

    whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.

6 As they pass through the Valley of Baka,

    they make it a place of springs;

    the autumn rains also cover it with pools.

7 They go from strength to strength,

    till each appears before God in Zion.

8 Hear my prayer, Lord God Almighty;

    listen to me, God of Jacob.

9 Look on our shield, O God;

    look with favor on your anointed one.

84:10 주의 궁정에서의 한 날이 다른 곳에서의 천 날보다 나은즉 악인의 장막에 사는 것보다 내 하나님의 성전 문지기로 있는 것이 좋사오니

84:11 여호와 하나님은 해요 방패이시라 여호와께서 은혜와 영화를 주시며 정직하게 행하는 자에게 좋은 것을 아끼지 아니하실 것임이니이다

10 Better is one day in your courts

    than a thousand elsewhere;

I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God

    than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield;

    the Lord bestows favor and honor;

no good thing does he withhold

    from those whose walk is blameless.

12 Lord Almighty,

    blessed is the one who trusts in you.

올해 우리 교회 표어가 오늘 본문 1절이고, 주제 말씀이 10절입니다. 2025년을 목회를 놓고 기도하는 가운데 올 해부터는 체육관을 건축하려는 마음을 주셔서 올 해 목표와 주제로 본문 말씀을 정한 것입니다. 지난 주중에는 VBS를 통해서 아이들이 너무 행복해하고, 은혜 받는 모습을 보면서 공간에 대한 안타까운 마음이 더 생겼습니다. 아이들이 활동을 마음껏 할 수 있고, 어른들은 그 일을 위해서 새벽에 모여서 계속 기도할 수 있는 정도의 공간만이라도 있으면 좋겠다는 마음이었습니다. 그렇게 되면 기도가 가장 필요한 시기에 교회 공적인 새벽기도를 쉴 필요가 없으니까요…

그럼에도 제가 건축을 미루고 조직을 정비하고, 구역을 정비하고, 부서를 정비하려는 이유는 주의 장막을 사랑하는 것이 건물을 사모하는 것을 의미하는 것이 아님을 알기 때문입니다. 먼저 우리 마음 속에 주를 향한 뜨거운 사랑이 넘쳐서, 그 마음이 주의 장막(성전, 교회 건물)을 사모하는 마음으로 자연스럽게 연결되어야 하기 때문입니다.

시인은 성전을 사모한다고 노래하지만, 사실은 주님을 사모했던 것입니다. 시편 84편은 앗수르와 산헤립의 침략으로 사로잡혀 가서 앗수르 사람들과 함께 살게 되어 마음대로 여호와의 집에 나아갈 수 없는 형편에 처한 한 레위인(고라자손)이 하나님과 성전에 대한 애타는 사모함을 노래한 노래입니다.

시편 3권의 마지막을 구성하는 고라자손의 시 4개(84, 85, 87, 88편) 중에서 첫 번째 시입니다. 고라는 레위의 증손자로서 모세와 아론에게 반역하다가 죽음을 당한 인물(민 16장; 대상 12:6)이지만, 남은 자들은 조상들의 과오를 반면교사 삼아 거룩한 족속이 되었던 것입니다. 그후 왕정시대에 이르러 다윗에 의하여 성전 문을 지키는 거룩한 임무를 부여 받은 것입니다.

This year's church motto is from verse 1 of today’s passage, and the theme verse is verse 10. While praying about ministry in 2025, God placed on my heart the desire to begin constructing a gym starting this year. That is why we chose today’s passage as our goal and theme for the year.

Last week, through VBS, I saw how happy and blessed the children were, and it deepened my longing for a better space. I began to feel a strong desire to at least have a space where children can freely engage in activities and where adults can gather early in the morning to pray for those efforts. If we had that, we wouldn’t have to pause our official early morning prayer meetings during times when prayer is most needed.

Nevertheless, the reason I have delayed construction and instead focused on reorganizing the church’s structure—such as districts and departments—is because I understand that loving the Lord’s dwelling place is not the same as longing for a building.

What must come first is an overflowing love for the Lord in our hearts. Only then will that love naturally lead us to long for the Lord’s dwelling place (the temple, the church building).

The psalmist sings of longing for the temple, but in truth, he is longing for the Lord. Psalm 84 is a song of yearning for God and His temple, written by a Levite (a descendant of the sons of Korah) who had been taken captive and was living among the Assyrians after the invasion by Assyria and Sennacherib, making it impossible for him to go freely to the house of the Lord.

This is the first of four psalms (Psalms 84, 85, 87, and 88) by the sons of Korah that form the conclusion of Book III of the Psalms. Korah, a great-grandson of Levi, was the one who rebelled against Moses and Aaron and was put to death (Numbers 16; 1 Chronicles 12:6), but his descendants learned from the sins of their ancestors and became a holy people. Later, during the monarchy, they were entrusted by David with the sacred duty of guarding the gates of the temple. 

여호와의 궁정을 향한 사모함 (1~7절)

시인은 1, 2절에서 여호와의 주의 장막을 사모함에 대한 표현을 합니다. 주의 궁정에 대한 사모함은 건물에 대한 사모함이 아니라, 하나님의 존재에 대한, 곧 하나님의 임재(쉐키나/시은소)에 대한 사모함 입니다.

시인이 하나님을 얼마나 사랑하는지!? 몸이 쇠약해질 정도입니다(2). 사모하는 애인과의 관계로 이해하면 될 것입니다. 만나러 가고 싶은데 못 가니까! 보고 싶은데 못 보니까! 몸이 아픈 것입니다.

이는 전 인격적으로 살아 계신 하나님을 갈망하는 시인의 모습을 나타냅니다. 시인은 하나님을 사랑하면서 그의 성전에 나가지 못하는 자신의 형편 때문에 3가지 부류의 존재를 부러워합니다.

첫번째로 제비와 참새입니다(3).

시인은 마음껏 하나님의 제단과 성전을 드나들며 둥지를 튼 제비와 참새에 대한 부러움을 노래합니다. 예배를 빼앗겨 보기 전에는 이렇게 자유롭게 편하게 예배할 수 있는 것이 얼마나 큰 축복인지 모릅니다.

두번째는 제사장과 레위인들입니다(4).

그들은 주의 장막에 거하며 하나님을 섬기는 자들입니다. 주의 집에 산다는 것은 주의 장막을 섬기는 사람들을 의미합니다.

마지막으로 순례자들입니다(5~7).

시인은 절기가 되면 사방에서 시온(예루살렘)을 향하여 순례의 길을 떠나는 자들에 대한 부러움을 노래합니다. 마음에 시온의 대로가 있다(5)는 것은, 이미 온 생각과 마음이 시온(하나님)으로 향해 있다는 것입니다. 다른 것이 비집고 들어올 틈이 없습니다.

하지만 알아야 할 것은 그럼에도 시온으로 가는 길에는 고난이 있다는 사실입니다. 눈물 골짜기(바카 계곡)가 앞을 가로막습니다. 우리의 마음이 시온을 향해도, 아니 시온으로 가려면 반드시 눈물의 골짜기(고난)를 지나야 합니다. 그러나 하나님은 그들에게 샘을 주시고 농사에 반드시 필요한 이른 비(가을비)를 주실 것입니다. 비록 눈물의 골짜기이지만, 하나님은 시온을 향해 가는 자들에게 복을 주시고 그들은 결국 시온에서 하나님을 만날 것입니다.

Longing for the Courts of the LORD (Verses 1–7)

In verses 1 and 2, the psalmist expresses his longing for the dwelling place of the LORD. This yearning for the courts of the LORD is not about a physical building but rather a longing for God’s presence—His Shekinah glory, the mercy seat, the manifest presence of God Himself.

How much does the psalmist love God? So much that his body grows faint (v.2). It is comparable to the relationship between lovers—when you desperately want to meet someone but can’t, when you long to see them but are unable to—you feel physically unwell.

This reveals the psalmist’s deep, personal longing for the living God with his whole being. Because of his love for God and his inability to enter the temple, the psalmist envies three kinds of beings:

First, the sparrow and the swallow (v.3).The psalmist sings of his envy for the birds who freely come and go, building their nests near the altar and dwelling in the temple of God. Until worship is taken from us, we often don’t realize what a great blessing it is to be able to worship so freely and comfortably.

Second, the priests and Levites (v.4).They are those who dwell in the house of the LORD and serve Him. To live in the house of the LORD means to be one who serves in His tabernacle.

Lastly, the pilgrims (vv.5–7).The psalmist sings of his envy for those who, during the appointed festivals, travel from all directions toward Zion (Jerusalem). To “have highways to Zion in their hearts” (v.5) means that their entire thoughts and affections are directed toward Zion—toward God. Nothing else can find space in their hearts.

Yet, one thing we must understand is that even so, the road to Zion is not without hardship. The Valley of Baca (the valley of weeping) lies ahead. Even when our hearts are set on Zion, the path requires us to pass through the valley of tears. But God will provide springs of water for them and send early rain (autumn rain) that is essential for the harvest. Though the valley is filled with sorrow, God will bless those on the journey toward Zion, and they will ultimately meet God there.

여호와를 향한 기도 (8~11절)

이제 시인은 시온에 이른 것처럼 상상하며 하나님께 간구합니다. 우리 방패이신 하나님이여(9)는 하나님, 우리의 방패를 도우소서 로 번역하는 것이 옳습니다. 그리고 그 방패는 바로, 기름 부으신 자를 가리킵니다.

일차적으로 왕을 말하는데, 만일 서론에서 말한 시대적 배경이 맞다면 당시의 왕은 히스기야입니다.

그러나 궁극적으로 그리스도, 즉 메시아를 의미한다고 볼 수 있습니다. 시인이 그리스도를 보호하실 것을 간구하는 이유는 그리스도(구원자)가 시편 기자 자신을 사모하는 궁정으로 인도할 것을 믿기 때문입니다.

결국 구약의 하나님의 궁정은 신약의 교회요, 궁극적인 예루살렘, 곧 시온성인 천국을 의미합니다.

우리의 구원자 되신 예수께서 우리를 결국에는 그곳으로 인도하실 것입니다.

시인은 주의 궁정에서의 한 날이 다른 곳에서의 천 날보다 낫다고 노래합니다(10a). 왜, 성전의 문지기로 한 날이 세상의 천 날보다 좋을까요? 바로 시인이 추구하는 것이 다르기 때문입니다. 시인은 복의 근원이 하나님임을 알고 있습니다. 아니 그에게는 하나님 자체가 복이십니다(11). 이 말씀은 새벽마다 교회 철문을 열 때, 늦은 밤 철문을 닫을 때 제 마음에 떠오는 말씀이었습니다.

Prayer to the LORD (Verses 8–11)

Now the psalmist begins to pray, as if he has already arrived in Zion. The phrase “O God, our shield” in verse 9 is more accurately understood as “O God, help our shield.” The “shield” here refers to God’s anointed one.

Primarily, this points to the king. If the historical context suggested in the introduction is correct, the king at that time would be Hezekiah.

However, ultimately, this refers to Christ—the Messiah. The reason the psalmist pleads for protection over the Christ is because he believes that the Christ (the Savior) will lead him into the courts of the LORD that he so longs for.

In the end, the courts of God in the Old Testament represent the Church in the New Testament, and ultimately the heavenly Jerusalem—Zion, which is Heaven itself.

Jesus, our Savior, will one day lead us there.

The psalmist proclaims that one day in the courts of the LORD is better than a thousand elsewhere (v.10a). Why is even one day as a doorkeeper in the temple better than a thousand days in the world? It is because the psalmist’s priorities are different. He knows that the source of all blessing is God Himself. In fact, to him, God Himself is the blessing (v.11).

This verse has often come to my heart when I open the church gate early in the morning or close it late at night.

시인은 영적인 비밀을 알고 있습니다. 비록 새들처럼 자유롭게 성전에 드나들 수 없지만, 제사장들처럼 섬길 수 없지만, 순례자들처럼 비록 시온에 갈 수는 없지만… 만군의 여호와를 의지하는 자는 동일한 복을 받는다는 사실입니다.

시편의 전체 주제는 복 있는 사람입니다. 그 가운데 오늘 시편은 시편이 추구하는 복이 무엇인지를 잘 알려줍니다. 그것은 세상에서의 성공이 아닙니다. 시편이 추구하는 복은 바로 주님이 계시는 성전을 사모하는 것이고, 그의 집에 거하는 것이고, 그곳을 향해 마음의 대로가 있는 것입니다.

또한 시편이 추구하는 복은 세상에서의 천 날이 아닌 주의 장막에서의 한 날, 하나님의 문지기 복입니다.

그것은 하나님과의 동행이고, 동거이며, 하나님을 예배하는 복입니다. 바로 우리들처럼 말입니다.  

The psalmist understands a spiritual secret. Even though he cannot freely come and go in the temple like the birds, even though he cannot serve like the priests, and even though he cannot go up to Zion like the pilgrims—he knows this one truth: those who trust in the LORD of hosts receive the same blessing.

The overarching theme of the Book of Psalms is “the blessed person.” Among all the psalms, today’s passage reveals most clearly what kind of blessing the Psalms truly pursue. It is not worldly success.

The blessing sought in the Psalms is a heart that longs for the temple where the Lord dwells, a desire to dwell in His house, and a heart whose road leads always toward that place.

The blessing in the Psalms is not a thousand days of worldly pleasure, but a single day in the courts of the Lord—the blessing of being a doorkeeper in God's house.

This is the blessing of walking with God, dwelling with Him, and worshiping Him.

This is the blessing we enjoy, too.
