56 But they put God to the test

    and rebelled against the Most High;

    they did not keep his statutes.

57 Like their ancestors they were disloyal and faithless,

    as unreliable as a faulty bow.

58 They angered him with their high places;

    they aroused his jealousy with their idols.

59 When God heard them, he was furious;

    he rejected Israel completely.

60 He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh,

    the tent he had set up among humans.

61 He sent the ark of his might into captivity,

    his splendor into the hands of the enemy.

62 He gave his people over to the sword;

    he was furious with his inheritance.

63 Fire consumed their young men,

    and their young women had no wedding songs;

64 their priests were put to the sword,

    and their widows could not weep.

78:65 그 때에 주께서 잠에서 깨어난 것처럼, 포도주를 마시고 고함치는 용사처럼 일어나사

65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,

    as a warrior wakes from the stupor of wine.

66 He beat back his enemies;

    he put them to everlasting shame.

67 Then he rejected the tents of Joseph,

    he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim;

68 but he chose the tribe of Judah,

    Mount Zion, which he loved.

69 He built his sanctuary like the heights,

    like the earth that he established forever.

70 He chose David his servant

    and took him from the sheep pens;

71 from tending the sheep he brought him

    to be the shepherd of his people Jacob,

    of Israel his inheritance.

72 And David shepherded them with integrity of heart;

    with skillful hands he led them.

                  지난 금요일부터 시작한 시편 78편 묵상이 드디어 오늘로 끝을 맺습니다. 72절에 달하는 방대한 분량이었습니다. 그 내용은 무엇이었습니까? 출애굽부터 사사기까지 이스라엘의 끊임없이 반복되는 죄악이었습니다. 그들은 끊임없이 하나님을 노엽게 하였습니다. 하나님께서는 때때로 그들의 죄악들을 징벌하시지만 그러나 그들에게 당신의 진노를 다 쏟지 않으십니다. 이를 38-39절은 이렇게 설명하고 있습니다. “오직 하나님은 긍휼하시므로 죄악을 덮어 주시어 멸망시키지 아니하시고 그의 진노를 여러 번 돌이키시며 그의 모든 분을 다 쏟아 내지 아니하셨으니 그들은 육체이며 가고 다시 돌아오지 못하는 바람임을 기억하셨음이라.” 오늘의 말씀도 마찬가지입니다. 이들은 또다시 하나님을 시험하고 하나님께 반항합니다. 하나님께서 약속하셨던 가나안 땅에 들어가서도 마찬가지였습니다. 그런 그들에게 하나님은 진노하시지만 그 진노의 끝에는 그들을 또다시 구원하십니다. 그리고 그들에게 새로운 일을 행하십니다. 오늘은 이스라엘의 반복되는 죄악에 대한 하나님의 반응이라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

Our journey through Psalm 78, which began last Friday, finally concludes today. It was an expansive passage, spanning 72 verses. What was its core message? It was the unending, repeated sin of Israel, from the Exodus to the period of the Judges. They continually provoked God's wrath. While God sometimes disciplined them for their sins, He did not pour out His full indignation upon them. Verses 38-39 explain this: "Yet he was merciful; he forgave their iniquities and did not destroy them. Again and again he restrained his anger and did not stir up his full wrath. He remembered that they were but flesh, a breath that does not return." Today's passage is no different. They again tested God and rebelled against Him, even after entering the promised land of Canaan. God was indeed angry with them, yet at the end of His wrath, He rescued them again. And He did a new thing among them. Today, I want to share a message titled, "God's Response to Repeated Sin."

                  첫번째, 이스라엘의 반복되는 죄악에 대해 하나님께서는 진노하셨습니다. 본문 56-58절은 이들이 어떻게 하나님을 진노케하였는지를 설명합니다. 56절, 그들은 지존하신 하나님을 시험하고 반항하였습니다. 지존하신, 즉, 지극히 높으신 하나님을 시험하고 반항하였다는 것입니다. 그런데 이 시험과 반항이라는 표현은 앞에서 광야1세대를 설명하던 40절과 41절의 반복입니다. 즉 이들이 그들이 범했던 죄악을 반복하고 있다는 것이지요. 57절도 마찬가지입니다. “그들의 조상들같이 배반하고” 라고 말하고 있지 않습니까? 그러면서 이들의 행위를 무엇이라고 표현하고 있습니까? “속이는 활같이 빗나가서” 라고 표현하고 있습니다. 여러분, 우리가 흔히 쓰는 ‘죄를 범한다’ 라는 표현은 히브리어 원문에 ‘과녁을 빗나간다’ 라는 표현에서 온 말입니다. 그런데 아예 활 자체가 결함이 있어서 과녁을 실수로 빗나가는 것이 아니라 아예 맞출 수 없는 활이라면 어떻겠습니까? 그들은 실수로 죄를 짓는 것이 아니라 행하는 모든 일이 죄로 연결되는 것입니다. 바로 그것이 지금 이스라엘의 상태입니다. 58절도 같은 얘기를 두 번 반복하고 있습니다. “자기 산당들로, 조각한 우상들로, 노여움을, 진노를 일으키며.” 이는 이들이 범하고 있는 죄악들이 얼마나 심각한 것인지를 우리에게 보여주고 있는 것이지요. 행하는 모든 것이 죄악뿐인 이들에게 하나님께서는 진노하십니다. 59절에 이들을 크게 미워하셨다고 합니다. 그렇다면 우리는 당연히 이들에게 임할 심판을 예상하게 됩니다. 우리가 예상했던대로 59-64절까지의 말씀은 이들에 대한 하나님의 심판을 이야기하고 있지요. 그런데 그 모든 심판 중에도 핵심이 되는 일이 있습니다. 바로 60절 말씀입니다. 함께 읽겠습니다. “사람 가운데 세우신 장막 곧 실로의 성막을 떠나시고” 하나님의 임재가 이스라엘 가운데서 떠난 것이 바로 그것입니다. 이스라엘을 보호하시고 그들의 싸움을 대신 싸워주시는 이가 누구였습니까? 바로 하나님이셨습니다. 출애굽기 14:14 “여호와께서 너희를 위하여 싸우시리니 너희는 가만히 있을지니라” 라고 말씀하지 않으셨습니까? 그러나 이스라엘의 왕으로서 이들을 대신하여 싸우시던 하나님께서 이들을 떠나자 이들은 그 대적의 손에 처참하게 능멸당할 수 밖에 없었습니다. 하나님이 떠나신 이스라엘은 당신의 백성에게 진노하시는 하나님 앞에 아무런 꿈도 희망도 없어보입니다. 그런데 바로 그 때, 예기치 못한 일이 일어납니다.

1. Humanity's Repeated Sin and Its Consequences (Psalm 78:56-64)

First, regarding Israel's repeated sin, God was provoked to wrath. Verses 56-58 explain how they angered Him. Verse 56 says they "tested the Most High God and rebelled against him." To test and rebel against the Most High, the infinitely exalted God! This very phrase, "tested and rebelled," echoes verses 40 and 41, which described the first generation in the wilderness. This shows they were repeating the very sins their ancestors had committed. Verse 57 is similar: "They turned back and were faithless like their ancestors." What does the Scripture say about their actions? "They were like a faulty bow."

You know, the common expression "to commit sin" comes from a Hebrew word meaning "to miss the mark." But what if the bow itself is so flawed that it's not just a mistake to miss the mark, but impossible to hit it at all? They weren't just committing sins by accident; everything they did led to sin. This was the state of Israel. Verse 58 repeats this idea twice: "They angered him with their high places; they aroused his jealousy with their idols." This reveals just how serious their sins were. To a people whose every act was sin, God was justly angry. Verse 59 says He "greatly abhorred" them.

Naturally, we anticipate judgment upon them. And just as we expect, verses 59-64 describe God's judgment upon them. Yet, among all these judgments, there's a core event, found in verse 60. Let's read it together: "He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent he had set up among humans." The departure of God's presence from among Israel was the essence of that judgment. Who was it that protected Israel and fought their battles for them? It was God Himself! Didn't Exodus 14:14 declare, "The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still"? But when God, as their King, who fought on their behalf, departed from them, they were utterly humiliated and disgraced by their enemies. Israel, abandoned by God and facing His wrath, seemed to have no hope or future. Yet, precisely at that moment, something unexpected happened.

                  바로 두번째, 이스라엘의 반복되는 죄악에 대해 하나님께서는 새로운 일을 행하십니다. 65절은 이렇게 시작합니다. “그때에” 하나님의 진노로 더이상 일어나지 못할 것 같았던 바로 그때에 하나님께서 마치 잠에서 깨어난 용사처럼 일어나십니다. 그리고 그의 대적들을 쳐 물리치십니다. 이스라엘에게 진노하셔서 이들을 영영 떠난 것 처럼 보이셨던 하나님께서 이들이 감당할 수 없는 싸움을 하게 되자 다시 이들을 위하여 싸워 주시는 것입니다. 67절을 보니 분명히 하나님께서는 실로의 성막, 즉 에브라임 지파의 땅을 떠나셨는데 오늘 말씀 68-69절을 보니 이들을 완전히 떠나신 것이 아니라 유다 지파와 시온산을 택하셔서 그곳에 다시 임재하시기로 결정하십니다. 69절 함께 읽겠습니다. “그의 성소를 산의 높음같이, 영원히 두신 땅같이 지으셨도다” 그가 거하실 성소를 지으셨도다. 하나님께서는 이스라엘 백성의 반복되는 죄악들을 심판하시고 그들을 떠나셨었지만 그들을 결코 버리지 않으시는 것입니다. 그들이 감당 할 수 없을 때에 다시 일어나셔서 당신의 백성을 기억하시고 회복시키십니다. 그리고 그들 가운데 다시 거하시는 것입니다. 그리고 70-72절 말씀을 통하여 이스라엘 가운데 새 일을 행하십니다. 왕이신 하나님께서 이제 당신을 대신하여 당신의 백성을 지도할 사람을 세우시는 것입니다. 그 사람이 바로 하나님의 종 다윗이었습니다. 오늘 70-71절 말씀은 다윗을 양의 우리에서, 젖양을 지키는 중에서 그를 이끌어 내셨다고 합니다. 그는 양들을 이끄는 목자였습니다. 이는 어제의 말씀인 52절의 말씀을 기억하게 합니다. 52절에서는 하나님의 인도하심을 이렇게 표현하고 있습니다. “그가 자기 백성은 양같이 인도하여 내시고 광야에서 양 떼 같이 지도하셨도다” 오늘 말씀 72절 말씀도 함께 읽어보겠습니다. “이에 그가 그들을 자기 마음의 완전함으로 기르고 그의 손의 능숙함으로 그들을 지도하였도다” 이 두 말씀은 목자에 대한 이야기입니다. 목자 되신 하나님께서 다윗이라는 새로운 목자를 이들에게 허락하셨습니다. 그는 자기 마음의 완전함과 손의 능숙함으로 그들을 지도할 것입니다. 그러나 우리는 이 새 목자된 다윗이 예표하는 것이 누구인지를 알고 있습니다. 그렇습니다. 우리의 선하신 목자, 바로 예수님이십니다. 반복되는 이스라엘의 죄악에 다윗을 보내신 것처럼 우리의 반복되는 죄악에 하나님께서 행하신 새로운 일, 그것은 선하신 목자, 예수님을 우리에게 보내신 것입니다.

2. God's Faithful and Sovereign Restoration (Psalm 78:65-72)

Second, in response to Israel's repeated sin, God did a new thing. Verse 65 begins with "Then." At that very moment, when it seemed Israel could not rise again from God's wrath, God arose like a warrior awakened from sleep. He struck down their adversaries. God, who had seemed to abandon Israel forever in His wrath, now rose again to fight for them when they faced a battle they could not win on their own.

Verse 67 clearly states that God abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh, the land of the tribe of Ephraim. But verses 68-69 show us that He did not completely abandon them; instead, He chose the tribe of Judah and Mount Zion, which He loved, deciding to dwell there once again. Let's read verse 69 together: "He built his sanctuary like the heights of heaven, like the earth he has established forever." He built His dwelling place! God had judged Israel for their repeated sins and had withdrawn from them, but He never completely abandoned them. When they were overwhelmed, He rose again, remembered His people, and restored them. He chose to dwell among them once more.

And through verses 70-72, He did a new work among Israel. The King, God Himself, now raised up a person to lead His people on His behalf. That person was David, His servant. Verses 70-71 tell us that God "chose David his servant and took him from the sheepfolds; from tending the sheep he brought him." David was a shepherd, leading his sheep. This reminds us of yesterday's verse, 52, which describes God's guidance: "He led his people like sheep and guided them like a flock in the wilderness." Let's also read verse 72: "And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them."

Both of these verses speak of a shepherd. God, our great Shepherd, granted them a new shepherd in David. David would lead them with integrity of heart and skillful hands. But we know who this new shepherd, David, foreshadows. Yes, it is our Good Shepherd, Jesus! Just as God sent David in response to Israel's repeated sin, the new thing God has done in response to our repeated sin is to send us the Good Shepherd, Jesus.

                  말씀을 맺습니다. 이스라엘의 반복되는 죄악에 하나님께서는 진노하셨습니다. 그래서 당신이 세우신 처소를 떠나셨었습니다. 그러나 하나님께서는 당신의 모든 분노를 다 쏟으시지는 않으셨습니다. 그들이 감당할 수 없을 때에 하나님께서는 잠에서 깨어난 용사처럼 일어나셔서 그들의 대적을 물리치셨습니다. 그리고 그들에게 새로운 목자, 다윗을 세우셨습니다. 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 하나님께서는 우리의 반복되는 죄악에 선하신 목자, 예수님을 세우셨습니다. 비록 하나님께서 우리의 죄악에 진노하시고 우리를 심판하실지라도 하나님께서는 예수그리스도를 우리에게 주심으로 우리를 다시 회복시키십니다. 우리의 선한 목자되시는 예수님을 바라보시고 예수님의 은혜를 힘입어 살아가는 여러분 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.  

Let me conclude. In response to Israel's repeated sin, God was angry, and He even departed from the dwelling place He had established. Yet, God did not pour out His full wrath. When they could no longer bear it, God rose like a warrior awakened from sleep and defeated their enemies. And He raised up a new shepherd for them, David.

The same holds true for us. In response to our repeated sin, God has established the Good Shepherd, Jesus. Even though God may be angry at our sin and bring judgment, through giving us Jesus Christ, God restores us again. I pray in the Lord's name that you will look to Jesus, our Good Shepherd, and live by His grace.
