78:40 그들이 광야에서 그에게 반항하며 사막에서 그를 슬프시게 함이 몇 번인가

78:41 그들이 돌이켜 하나님을 거듭거듭 시험하며 이스라엘의 거룩하신 이를 노엽게 하였도다

78:42 그들이 그의 권능의 손을 기억하지 아니하며 대적에게서 그들을 구원하신 날도 기억하지 아니하였도다

78:43 그 때에 하나님이 애굽에서 그의 표적들을, 소안 들에서 그의 징조들을 나타내사

78:44 그들의 강과 시내를 피로 변하여 그들로 마실 수 없게 하시며

78:45 쇠파리 떼를 그들에게 보내어 그들을 물게 하시고 개구리를 보내어 해하게 하셨으며

78:46 그들의 토산물을 황충에게 주셨고 그들이 수고한 것을 메뚜기에게 주셨으며

78:47 그들의 포도나무를 우박으로 그들의 뽕나무를 서리로 죽이셨으며

40 How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness

    and grieved him in the wasteland!

41 Again and again they put God to the test;

    they vexed the Holy One of Israel.

42 They did not remember his power—

    the day he redeemed them from the oppressor,

43 the day he displayed his signs in Egypt,

    his wonders in the region of Zoan.

44 He turned their river into blood;

    they could not drink from their streams.

45 He sent swarms of flies that devoured them,

    and frogs that devastated them.

46 He gave their crops to the grasshopper,

    their produce to the locust.

47 He destroyed their vines with hail

    and their sycamore-figs with sleet.

48 He gave over their cattle to the hail,

    their livestock to bolts of lightning.

49 He unleashed against them his hot anger,

    his wrath, indignation and hostility—

    a band of destroying angels.

50 He prepared a path for his anger;

    he did not spare them from death

    but gave them over to the plague.

51 He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt,

    the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham.

52 But he brought his people out like a flock;

    he led them like sheep through the wilderness.

53 He guided them safely, so they were unafraid;

    but the sea engulfed their enemies.

54 And so he brought them to the border of his holy land,

    to the hill country his right hand had taken.

55 He drove out nations before them

    and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance;

    he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.

역사와 관련된 많은 명언들이 있습니다. 역사는 반복된다, 역사를 통하여 배운다, 무한도전이라는 예능 덕분에 단재 신채호 선생이 했다고 잘못 알려진 한국의 명언, 역사를 잊은 민족에게 미래는 없다 등등

그 중에서 실제적인 인간사의 실상을 반영한 명언은 토인비의 것이라고 생각합니다.

인류에게 가장 큰 비극은 지나간 역사에서 아무런 교훈도 얻지 못한다는 데 있다

어찌 보면 당연한 것 같습니다. 인간의 악한 습성은 자신이 경험한 것 만을 인정하고 믿으려는 경향이 있습니다. 쉽게 표현하면 먼저 경험한 엄마, 아빠 말 안 듣고 꼭 자신이 된장인지 똥인지 찍어 먹어 봐야 그제서야 아! 한다는 것입니다. 그리고 이것이 인류 역사를 통해서 각 가정에서 각 민족과 국가에서 끊임없이 반복된다는 사실입니다. 그래서 토인비는 이것이 비극이라는 것입니다.

구약 성경의 대부분의 내용도 사실은 이스라엘의 반복되는 죄악과 반복되는 하나님의 은혜 이야기입니다. 사사기 이야기의 사이클은 이스라엘의 범죄 – 하나님의 심판으로 이방인의 압제 – 이스라엘의 회개와 간구 – 하나님의 구원 – 평화로 인한 하나님의 은혜를 망각이 무한히 반복되는 것입니다. 그렇다면 어떻게 해야 이 지긋지긋한 사이클을 반복하지 않을 수 있을까요?

There are many famous quotes related to history. "History repeats itself," "We learn from history," and the well-known Korean saying—often mistakenly attributed to Danjae Shin Chae-ho thanks to the variety show Infinite Challenge—"A nation that forgets its history has no future," among others.

Among them, I believe the quote that most accurately reflects the reality of human affairs is the one by Arnold J. Toynbee:

In a way, this seems obvious. Human nature tends to only accept and believe what it personally experiences. To put it simply, it's like when children don't listen to their parents and insist on tasting something themselves—whether it's soybean paste or feces—before they realize, “Oh!” That’s exactly what keeps happening in families, among peoples, and in nations throughout human history. And that, Toynbee says, is the true tragedy.

Most of the Old Testament, in fact, is also a story of Israel's repeated sins and God's repeated grace. The cycle in the Book of Judges is endlessly repeated: Israel sins → God brings judgment through foreign oppression → Israel repents and cries out → God brings deliverance → Israel forgets God's grace during times of peace.

So then, how can we stop repeating this dreadful cycle?

하나님의 구원을 경험하라 (42절)

어떤 가정이든 민족이든 국가이든 그 구성원들이 함께 좋은 기억을 만드는 것이 중요합니다. 개인으로 치면 추억이고, 국가 민족적 차원에서는 이것을 역사라고 합니다. 물론 좋지 않은 기억의 역사가 있을 수 있습니다. 우리나라로 치자면 일제 강점기라든가 6.25 전쟁 같은 기억들입니다.

이스라엘은 그 민족의 태동기에 좋지 않은 민족적인 기억이 있습니다. 애굽에서 400년간의 종살이입니다.

그들이 400년이 넘는 기간을 종살이하다가 이스라엘 민족으로 독립하게 된 역사는 하나님의 구원의 은혜를 제외하고는 절대로 설명할 수 없습니다.

일제치하 36년만 해도 민족적인 정체성의 어려움이 있었는데, 그 10배가 넘는 기간을 종살이하다가 독립을 한다는 것은 도저히 말로는 설명할 수 없는 기적인 것입니다.   

또한 그 구원의 과정은 인류 역사를 통틀어서 그 어떤 민족도 경험하지 못한 놀라운 이적의 연속이었습니다. 

그래서 하나님은 반복적으로 출애굽의 역사를 언급하는 것입니다. 어제 주일 본문도 사울을 왕으로 세우면서 사무엘의 입을 통해서 다시 한번 출애굽의 역사를 반복했습니다.

오늘 시편 기자도 출애굽의 역사를 반복합니다. 왜냐하면 이 사건이야 말로 이스라엘 민족의 정체성을 드러내기 때문입니다. 하나님이 애굽에서 그의 표적들과 소안 들에서 그의 징조들을 나타내 보이셨습니다.

하나님의 그들의 구원자이며, 아버지이며, 주인이시며, 왕이심을 드러내는 이적들입니다. 강과 시내가 피로 변했고(44), 쇠파리 떼가 그들을 물었고, 개구리를 보내어 애굽인들이 고통받게 하셨습니다(45). 

또한 황충과 메뚜기를 보내어 그들의 모든 소산물을 없애시고, 남은 것들은 우박과 서리로 없애셨습니다.

그들의 가축은 우박과 번개에 넘기셨습니다. 하나님의 재앙의 천사들을 보내어 애굽을 심판했습니다(49).

마지막으로 전염병과 애굽의 모든 장자를 치심으로 함의 후손들을 심판하셨습니다(30).

하지만 이스라엘은 양 떼와 같이 안전하게 인도하셨습니다. 그들을 뒤쫓는 애굽의 병사를 바다에 빠뜨려 수장하셨습니다. 또한 그들은 하나님의 오른손으로 만드시 성소의 영역으로 인도하여 당신의 백성으로 삼으시고, 계명을 주셨고, 가나안 민족들을 쫓아내고 그들의 장막을 펴게 하셨습니다.

무슨 일마다 이 출애굽과 가나안 정복 이야기가 나오는 것은 이것이 그들이 경험한 하나님과의 추억이기 때문입니다. 상상해 보십시오! 광야에서 수많은 별들을 바라보며, 다음 날 아침 펼쳐질 하나님의 은혜를 경험하는 장면을, 또한 갈라진 홍해 바다를 건널 때 양 옆으로 세워진 물로 된 벽을 보는 경이로움을!

우리는 이 하나님의 구원을 경험해야 합니다.

Experience God's Salvation (v. 42)

Whether in a family, a people group, or a nation, it is important for members to create good memories together. On an individual level, we call this "personal memories"; on a national or ethnic scale, we call it "history."

Of course, not all historical memories are pleasant. For example, in Korea, we have painful memories such as the Japanese occupation and the Korean War.

Israel also has a national memory of suffering from the early days of its formation—a history of 400 years of slavery in Egypt.

The fact that they were able to gain independence and become a nation after more than 400 years of slavery can only be explained by the grace of God's salvation.

Even Korea's 36 years under Japanese rule left a deep impact on our national identity. So to be enslaved for more than ten times that duration and then be freed is something truly miraculous, beyond human explanation.

Moreover, the process of that deliverance was filled with wonders that no other people group in human history has ever experienced.

That is why God repeatedly brings up the history of the Exodus. In yesterday’s Sunday passage, even when Saul was being established as king, God once again referenced the Exodus through the mouth of Samuel.

Likewise, today's psalmist repeats the story of the Exodus—because it is this very event that defines the identity of the people of Israel. God revealed His signs in Egypt and His wonders in the fields of Zoan.

These were miracles that revealed God as their Savior, their Father, their Master, and their King.The rivers and streams were turned to blood (v. 44), swarms of flies tormented them, and frogs were sent to plague the Egyptians (v. 45).

Locusts and grasshoppers devoured all of their crops. Whatever remained was destroyed by hail and frost.

Their livestock were struck down by hail and lightning. God sent angels of destruction to bring judgment upon Egypt (v. 49).

Finally, He struck down the firstborn of Egypt and brought judgment upon the descendants of Ham (v. 50).

But Israel, He led like a flock, safely and securely. He cast Pharaoh's armies into the sea. He brought His people into the territory He had prepared with His own right hand. He made them His own people, gave them His commandments, drove out the Canaanite nations, and allowed His people to dwell in their tents.

The reason why the story of the Exodus and the conquest of Canaan is constantly brought up is because it is the memory of God that they personally experienced.

Imagine it! Looking up at the countless stars in the desert sky, waiting in awe for God's grace to be revealed the next morning. Or walking through the parted Red Sea, marveling at the walls of water rising on either side!

We, too, must experience this salvation of God.

하나님의 구원을 기억하라 (42절)

죄악의 역사를 반복하지 않기 위해서는 먼저 하나님의 구원을 경험해야 합니다. 하지만 그것과 동일한 무게로 중요한 것은 하나님의 구원을 기억하는 것입니다. 출애굽의 기적을 경험한 세대는 모두 죽었습니다. 그렇다면 어떻게 출애굽의 역사를 기억할 수 있을까요? 그것이 바로 교육의 힘입니다.

하나님의 구원의 역사를 끊임없이 반복적으로 가르치는 것입니다. 이것이 하나님의 은혜를 기억하는 최고의 방법이요, 유일한 방법입니다. 그래서 다음 세대를 교육하는 일에 우리가 온 힘을 써야 하는 것입니다. 그렇지 않으면 우리가 고생해서 겨우 터득하고 배운 하나님의 진리를 다음 세대들 역시 맞아가며, 고생해가며, 찢고 깨지면서 배워야 하는 것입니다. 그렇게 역사가 반복되는 것입니다.

그러므로 우리 다음 세대, 곧 우리의 자식들, 후손들이 고생하지 않는 방법이 교육인 것입니다.

모든 문제를 42절이 잘 설명하고 있습니다.

그들이 그의 권능의 손을 기억하지 아니하며

대적에게서 그들을 구원하신 날도 기억하지 아니하였도다 (42)

그래서 기억을 영어로 Remember 라고 하는 것입니다. 기억은 다시 공동체의 멤버가 되는 유일한 방법입니다. 하나님이 나를 위해, 우리를 위해 하신 일을 기억하는 것, 그리고 그 기억을 함께 공유하며, 나누는 것 그래서 그것을 잊지 않는 것이 죄의 역사를 반복하지 않는 유일한 방법인 것입니다.

이번 여름 가족들과 함께 하나님과 동행하는 아름다운 추억을 만들어 보지 않겠습니까? 이번 여름 한사랑교회에서 함께 섬기고, 봉사하고, BBQ 하면서 하나님의 놀라운 추억을 만들어 보시지 않겠습니까?

하나님의 구원의 아름다운 추억을 공유함으로 죄악의 역사의 반복이 아닌, 놀라운 구원의 기쁨을 누리고 나누는 공동체 되기를 간절히 기도합니다.

Remember God’s Salvation (v. 42)

In order to avoid repeating the history of sin, we must first experience the salvation of God. But equally important is remembering that salvation. The generation that witnessed the miracle of the Exodus all passed away. So then, how can we remember the story of the Exodus? That is where the power of education comes in.

It is through the continual, repetitive teaching of God's saving acts. This is not only the best way to remember God's grace—it is the only way. That is why we must pour our energy into educating the next generation. Otherwise, the truths of God, which we learned through suffering and hardship, must also be learned by the next generation in the same painful, costly way. And this is how history repeats itself.

Therefore, the only way for our children—our future generations—to avoid suffering is through education.

Verse 42 explains the root of the problem very clearly:

That is why the word "remember" is so important. To “re-member” means to become a part of the community again. Remembering what God has done for me, for us—sharing that memory and keeping it alive—is the only way not to repeat the history of sin.

I earnestly pray that by sharing in the beautiful memories of God’s salvation, we may become a community that does not repeat the painful history of sin, but instead rejoices and shares in the joy of His amazing salvation.
