34:1 여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되

34:2 너는 이스라엘 자손에게 명령하여 그들에게 이르라 너희가 가나안 땅에 들어가는 때에 그 땅은 너희의 기업이 되리니 곧 가나안 사방 지경이라

1 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Command the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you enter Canaan, the land that will be allotted to you as an inheritance is to have these boundaries:

34:3 너희의 남쪽은 에돔 곁에 접근한 신 광야니 너희의 남쪽 경계는 동쪽으로 염해 끝에서 시작하여

34:4 돌아서 아그랍빔 언덕 남쪽에 이르고 신을 지나 가데스바네아 남쪽에 이르고 또 하살아달을 지나 아스몬에 이르고

34:5 아스몬에서 돌아서 애굽 시내를 지나 바다까지 이르느니라

3 “‘Your southern side will include some of the Desert of Zin along the border of Edom. Your southern boundary will start in the east from the southern end of the Dead Sea, 4 cross south of Scorpion Pass, continue on to Zin and go south of Kadesh Barnea. Then it will go to Hazar Addar and over to Azmon, 5 where it will turn, join the Wadi of Egypt and end at the Mediterranean Sea.

34:6 서쪽 경계는 대해가 경계가 되나니 이는 너희의 서쪽 경계니라

6 “‘Your western boundary will be the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. This will be your boundary on the west.

34:7 북쪽 경계는 이러하니 대해에서부터 호르 산까지 그어라

34:8 호르 산에서 그어 하맛 어귀에 이르러 스닷에 이르고

34:9 그 경계가 또 시브론을 지나 하살에난에 이르나니 이는 너희의 북쪽 경계니라

7 “‘For your northern boundary, run a line from the Mediterranean Sea to Mount Hor 8 and from Mount Hor to Lebo Hamath. Then the boundary will go to Zedad, 9 continue to Ziphron and end at Hazar Enan. This will be your boundary on the north.

34:10 너희의 동쪽 경계는 하살에난에서 그어 스밤에 이르고

34:11 그 경계가 또 스밤에서 리블라로 내려가서 아인 동쪽에 이르고 또 내려가서 긴네렛 동쪽 해변에 이르고

34:12 그 경계가 또 요단으로 내려가서 염해에 이르나니 너희 땅의 사방 경계가 이러하니라

10 “‘For your eastern boundary, run a line from Hazar Enan to Shepham. 11 The boundary will go down from Shepham to Riblah on the east side of Ain and continue along the slopes east of the Sea of Galilee. 12 Then the boundary will go down along the Jordan and end at the Dead Sea.

“‘This will be your land, with its boundaries on every side.’”

34:13 모세가 이스라엘 자손에게 명령하여 이르되 이는 너희가 제비 뽑아 받을 땅이라 여호와께서 이것을 아홉 지파 반쪽에게 주라고 명령하셨나니

34:14 이는 르우벤 자손의 지파와 갓 자손의 지파가 함께 그들의 조상의 가문에 따라 그들의 기업을 받을 것이며 므낫세의 반쪽도 기업을 받았음이니라

34:15 이 두 지파와 그 반 지파는 여리고 맞은편 요단 건너편 곧 해 돋는 쪽에서 그들의 기업을 받으리라 각 지파의 기업을 받으리라

13 Moses commanded the Israelites: “Assign this land by lot as an inheritance. The Lord has ordered that it be given to the nine and a half tribes, 14 because the families of the tribe of Reuben, the tribe of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance. 15 These two and a half tribes have received their inheritance east of the Jordan across from Jericho, toward the sunrise.”

제가 어릴 때 정말 마음에 들지 않는 규칙이 하나 있었어요. 그것은 바로 외박 금지였습니다. 친구집에서 자는 것이 절대 허락되지 않았어요. 어린 마음에 이런 답답하고 꽉 막힌 부모님이 너무 싫었습니다. 왜냐하면 제 남동생은 저보다 5살이나 어렸음에도 불구하고 언제든지 외박을 했거든요. 남녀차별이라며 엄청난 피해의식에 쩔어서 컸습니다. 그랬는데 이제 나이가 들고 가정을 이루고 하니까 부모님의 마음이 이해가 되면서 너무 감사한거예요. 집이라는 안전한 공간 밖에서 밤새 무슨 일이 일어날지 알 수 없죠. 부모님 입장에서는 최대한으로 저를 보호하고자하는 사랑이었습니다. 그때 저의 작은 머리로는 미처 이해하지 못하여 단지 속박이라고 느꼈던 그 규칙이 큰 울타리처럼 저를 안전하게 보호했던 것을 깨달았습니다. 하나님의 정해준 경계 안에서 사는 것. 그것은 자유를 속박하는 답답함이 아닙니다. 그것은 양떼가 목자의 보호 아래 넓은 초원을 자유로이 뛰어다니며 누리는 참된 자유입니다. 오늘 본문을 통해 하나님께서 확실하게 그어주신 경계 안에서 이스라엘 백성들은 보호와 평안을 누렸습니다. 이 말씀안에서 만나는 하나님은 확실한 약속과 확실한 경계를 통해 우리에게 믿음과 평안을 허락하시는 하나님이십니다.

When I was a child, there was one rule I really disliked: I was never allowed to have sleepovers. Staying the night at a friend’s house was absolutely forbidden. As a young girl, I found this rule frustrating and felt my parents were overly strict and unreasonable. What made it even worse was that my younger brother—five years younger than me—was allowed to sleep over whenever he wanted. I grew up feeling deeply wronged, convinced it was unfair gender discrimination.

But now that I’m older and have a family of my own, I’ve come to understand and deeply appreciate my parents’ perspective. You never know what might happen outside the safety of home during the night. From their point of view, it was a way of protecting me as much as possible—a form of love. What I once perceived as nothing more than control, I now see as a protective fence that kept me safe when I was too young to understand.

Living within the boundaries set by God is just like that. It’s not a restrictive confinement that limits freedom—it is true freedom, like sheep running freely in a wide open field under the shepherd’s care. In today’s passage, we see that the people of Israel enjoyed peace and protection within the clear boundaries God had set for them. The God we encounter through this word is a God who grants us faith and peace through His sure promises and clear boundaries.

1)    확실한 약속에서 얻는 믿음

오늘 말씀은 하나님께서 주실 약속의 땅인 가나안 지역의 지리적 경계를 확실히 알려주고 계십니다. 3절부터 12절까지 남, 서, 북, 동쪽 순서로 정확하게 지리를 언급하시며 알려주시고 있습니다. 가나안 정복 전쟁을 떠나기 전에 알려주시는 이 말씀은 앞으로 이들이 겪어야 할 정복 전쟁에 앞서 승리를 확신하게하는 희망의 메세지였습니다. 가나안 땅이 왜 약속의 땅입니까? 창세기에서 하나님은 아브라함에게 다음과 같이 약속했습니다. “ 그 날에 여호와께서 아브람과 더불어 언약을 세워 이르시되 내가 이 땅을 애굽 강에서부터 그 큰 강 유브라데까지 네 자손에게 주노니” (창 15:18). 이 말씀에서 하나님은 애굽강 즉 나일강부터 유프라테스강까지 주시겠다고 하셨습니다. 그러나 오늘 본문에 하나님이 말씀해주신 약속의 땅 크기는 그에 비하면 터무니 없이 작습니다. 고작 대한민국 땅의 ¼ 정도의 크기라고 합니다. 얼마나 작은지 느낌이 확 오시죠?

1) Faith from Sure Promises

In today’s scripture, God clearly defines the geographical boundaries of the promised land of Canaan. From verses 3 to 12, He outlines the borders in detail—south, west, north, and east. Before the conquest of Canaan even begins, God provides this message to instill hope and assurance of victory. Why is Canaan called the Promised Land? In Genesis, God made a covenant with Abraham, saying: “On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, ‘To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates.’” (Genesis 15:18) God promised to give them the land stretching from the Nile to the Euphrates. But compared to that, the land described in today’s passage is significantly smaller—only about a quarter the size of South Korea. That really puts things into perspective.

아니 이렇게 말이 다른데 어떻게 하나님이 신실하시다 할 수 있는가. 왜냐하면 하나님께서는 한번 하신 약속을 반드시 이루십니다. 그리하여 이 약속을 솔로몬 왕정 때에 이루십니다. 이 순간에서부터 대략 600년 후에 말이죠. 영원하신 하나님은 우리와 차원이 다르죠. 하나님은 현재 놓인 현실만을 바라보시지 않고 시간과 공간을 초월하여 존재하시기 때문입니다. “주의 목전에는 천 년이 지나간 어제 같으며 밤의 한 순간 같을 뿐임이니이다” (시편 90:4). 현재 본문 속 이스라엘 백성들은 이 사실을 그 당시에는 몰랐겠지요. 그러나 이들이 맡은바 해야할 일은 본인들의 상황과 현실에 맞게 주어진 가나안 땅의 경계 안에서 정복 전쟁에 최선을 다해야 하는 것입니다. 그리고 하나님은 이렇게 아직 정복 전쟁이 시작하기도 전에 상세한 약속의 말씀으로 비전을 심어주시고 계십니다. 여러분도 이렇게 하나님의 약속을 믿고 기다리는 무언가가 있으십니까? 오늘 말씀을 통해서 우리 모두가 하나님은 신실하신 분이며 약속을 반드시 지키시는 분이라는 확신을 갖기를 원합니다.

How, then, can God still be considered faithful when there seems to be such a discrepancy? Because God always fulfills His promises. This particular promise was fulfilled during the reign of King Solomon—about 600 years later from this moment. God, who is eternal, operates on a completely different level from us. He exists beyond time and space and doesn’t view reality from a human perspective. “A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.” (Psalm 90:4) The Israelites in today’s passage probably didn’t know this at the time. But what they were responsible for was to do their best in the conquest within the boundaries of Canaan as it had been assigned to them. Even before the battles began, God planted a vision in them through His specific promise. Do you have a promise from God you’re still waiting on? I pray that today’s word helps you be assured that God is faithful and always keeps His promises.

2)    확실한 경계에서 얻는 평안

또 하나님께서는 14절과 15절에서 확실하게 요단 동쪽에 이미 기업을 받은 르우벤, 갓, 므낫세 반 지파를 언급하시며 이들이 받는 기업을 다른 지파들과 구별합니다. 나머지 지파들만이 요단강 서쪽 가나안 땅을 기업으로 받을 수 있죠. 그러므로 이렇게 경계선을 구체적으로 제시해주신 것은 하나님의 배려였습니다. 인간의 욕심은 끝이 없지요. 그들에게 만에 하나 하나님의 정확한 경계선이 없었더라면 어떤 일이 벌어졌었을까요? 한도 끝도 없이 더 많은 땅을 정복하려고 했다가 지파들끼리 다투고 싸웠을 수도 있죠. 요단 동쪽 땅은 이미 받았는데 훗날 전쟁 참여 후 이들이 변심하여 욕심을 부릴 수 없게 확실히 못을 박는 것입니다. 이러한 경계는 이스라엘 지파 간의 갈등을 미연에 방지하고 이들이 평화롭고 조화롭게 살 수 있게 도와주었죠. 내가 가지지 못한 것에 초점을 맞추는 것이 아니라 나에게 허락된 것에 충만함과 감사함을 기억하는 습관은 우리 기독교인들에게 너무나도 필요한 자세입니다. 그렇지 못함은 불평과 불만의 씨앗이 평안과 행복을 야금야금 앗아갈 것입니다.

2) Peace from Clear Boundaries

In verses 14 and 15, God clearly identifies the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh as having already received their inheritance on the east side of the Jordan River. Only the remaining tribes were to receive land west of the Jordan in Canaan. By specifying these boundaries, God was being considerate. Human greed knows no limits. Without God’s clearly defined borders, what could have happened? Some tribes might have tried to conquer more land, leading to conflicts and fighting among them. Though the eastern tribes had already received their share, they might later have changed their minds and gotten greedy after the conquest. God’s clear boundaries prevented such outcomes. These boundaries helped prevent conflicts and allowed the tribes to live together peacefully and in harmony. As Christians, it is essential for us to practice gratitude and contentment with what we have, rather than focusing on what we lack. When we don’t, seeds of grumbling and dissatisfaction can slowly steal our peace and happiness.

더 나아가 이들에게 하나님이 주신 경계가 없었다면 더 많은 땅을 정복하려 했다가 가나안 민족들에게 반격을 받아 멸망했을지도 모르는 일입니다. 구약 성경 속 많은 곳에서 하나님이 함께 하시지 않을 때 크게 패배하고 실패하는 이스라엘의 모습을 많이 살펴볼 수 있습니다. 하나님이 허락하신 정도 안에서 만족하는 것. 이것은 하나님을 향한 단단한 믿음이 있을 때 가능한 것입니다. 왜냐하면 나에게 가장 선하고 좋은 것을 허락하시는 하나님 아버지이심을 믿기 때문입니다. 그랬을 때 다윗과 같은 고백이 절로 우리들의 입술 가운데 흘러나올 것을 믿습니다. “여호와는 나의 목자시니 내게 부족함이 없으리로다 그가 나를 푸른 풀밭에 누이시며 쉴 만한 물가로 인도하시는도다” (시편 23:1-2). 오늘 새벽 목자되시는 예수님의 보살핌에 집중하여 나에게 지금 허락하신 현재의 삶에 감사하고 또한 앞으로도 계속해서 신실하게 좋고 선한 것을 공급해주실 것을 믿고 나아가는 성도님들 되시길 기도드립니다.

Moreover, without the boundaries God set, they may have tried to conquer more land and ended up being attacked and destroyed by the Canaanites. Throughout the Old Testament, we see Israel suffer major defeats when they act without God. Being content within what God has allowed us—this is only possible when we have deep trust in Him. Because we believe that He is our Father who gives us what is best and good. When we truly believe this, we can naturally echo the words of David: “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters.” (Psalm 23:1–2) This morning, I pray that you focus on Jesus, our Shepherd, and give thanks for the life He has granted you today. May you trust that He will continue to faithfully provide all that is good and needful in your life.
