20250604 [새벽묵상] 하나님과 함께하는 매일의 삶 | God's Presence in Our Daily Lives (민/Num 33:1~37)

1 Here are the stages in the journey of the Israelites when they came out of Egypt by divisions under the leadership of Moses and Aaron. 2 At the Lord’s command Moses recorded the stages in their journey. This is their journey by stages:

3 The Israelites set out from Rameses on the fifteenth day of the first month, the day after the Passover. They marched out defiantly in full view of all the Egyptians, 4 who were burying all their firstborn, whom the Lord had struck down among them; for the Lord had brought judgment on their gods.

Introduction

I remember when our first child received infant baptism. It was the child who was being baptized, but they asked me to give the testimony. Strange, right? Anyway, I wrote a testimony, and I think I said something like this: "A few days ago, I took my child to a seaside park. The child couldn't walk properly yet, so my wife and I each held one of the child's hands as we walked step by step together. As we were walking, I suddenly thought, 'Ah, isn't this what life is like?' Just as parents hold their child's hands and walk together, step by step, with a child who can't yet walk properly, perhaps God has been holding my hand and walking with me throughout my entire life, step by step." That was roughly what my testimony was like.

Even now, I sometimes have these thoughts. Throughout all the paths I've walked in life, in that entire journey, God has been with me, and He is still with me now. So whether in days that were bright and exciting, or in days that were dark and painful, God was with me through them all. Especially in my daily routine that seems to just repeat the same things monotonously, God is with me. God is walking with me step by step through all those days, through each step I take.

So today, through the text of Scripture, I want to share a message titled "Daily Life with God."

First Point: God Doesn't Only Remember Our Dramatic Moments

However, people only remember the dramatic moments. Through various social media platforms, we want to show people our most beautiful appearance, our most glamorous moments. So we post moments from our lives that others would envy on Facebook, Instagram, KakaoStory, and such places. Even our faith life is the same way. We love dramatic moments. The passion and first love we felt when we first met God - we remember that for a long time and try to experience that moment again. We don't understand why it's so difficult to experience that kind of passion again in our daily devotions and prayer life.

But God seems to have a different perspective. Let's read verse 2 of today's text together: "At the LORD's command Moses recorded the stages in their journey. This is their journey by stages" (Numbers 33:2, NIV).

God directly commands Moses to record their journey. This means that all the journey recorded in today's text from verses 3-37 of chapter 33 was recorded as God commanded it to be recorded. Verses 3 and 4 specifically explain how they came out of Egypt - when, how, and why, in great detail. It's a very dramatic moment.

Verse 3: "The Israelites set out from Rameses on the fifteenth day of the first month, the day after the Passover. They marched out defiantly in full view of all the Egyptians" (NIV). This emphasizes God's great power. Verse 4: "who were burying all their firstborn, whom the LORD had struck down among them; for the LORD had brought judgment on their gods" (NIV). This means He judged the gods of Egypt. God saved the Israelites from Egypt with great power and by judging the gods of Egypt. This dramatic moment is recorded as the beginning of their journey.

However, the records that follow, from verse 5 to verse 37, are not easily understood when we think of this beginning. Because these contents deal with their journey from Egypt to the Desert of Sinai (Mount Sinai), and from the Desert of Sinai to the Desert of Paran, and from the Desert of Paran to Mount Hor, but all the truly dramatic events are missing. The meeting with God at Mount Sinai and receiving the law, Korah's rebellion on the way to the Desert of Paran, the rebellion of Israel after hearing the report of the 12 spies at Kadesh Barnea - all these truly dramatic events are omitted.

Then why did God tell them to record this journey?

Second Point: God Remembers and Cares for Our Small Daily Needs

The reason is that God remembers and cares for our small daily needs. Setting aside those dramatic and important events that we saw earlier - events that seem impossible for us to leave out - what the text deals with are the words in verses 8, 9, and 14.

Verse 8: "They left Pi Hahiroth and passed through the sea into the desert, and when they had traveled for three days in the Desert of Etham, they camped at Marah" (NIV). The detail about traveling three days in the Desert of Etham is more detailed than passing through the sea. It tells us the specific travel distance and time taken.

Verse 9: "They left Marah and went to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped there" (NIV). We remember what happened at Marah. The water there was bitter and undrinkable. But God showed Moses a piece of wood, and when he threw the branch into the water, it became sweet. And there's a detailed description of Elim. The mention of twelve springs uses absolute dual number grammar in the original text, expressing that Elim's springs were abundant enough for even 600,000 men to drink. And the exact number of shade trees is also given.

Verse 14 is the same: "They left Alush and camped at Rephidim, where there was no water for the people to drink" (NIV). It conveys the specific situation of water shortage.

Why did God set aside recording dramatic spiritual experiences and tell them to write about drinking water and shade like this? It's to show that God knows their daily needs precisely. God knew exactly when, where, and what they needed during their journey. Through the number of springs and palm trees, He showed that God's provision was precise and sufficient. By having them record even places like Rephidim where water was scarce, He shows that even such lack and shortage were within God's plan.

Recording all 42 place names without missing a single one, but omitting dramatic events and instead recording only ordinary movements, shows that for God there is no distinction between what we think of as dramatic days and ordinary days. For God, our day-by-day, daily routine is the object of God's interest and care. So through this record, we can know that God is with us in our daily lives.

Conclusion

God is with us in our daily lives. Just as the Israelites moved their camp 42 times and lived day by day, we too are living each day under God's detailed care. The dramatic encounter at Mount Sinai is precious, but even a sip of water drunk at Elim is God's grace. Even the moments of thirst at Marah and Rephidim were within God's plan.

Sometimes on life's path that seems like a wilderness, in my day-to-day routine that seems to repeat itself, there is God's presence working just as powerfully as on that first day when we first met God. Let us give thanks to the Lord who is with us in our daily lives, and I pray in the Lord's name that you will be those who walk with the Lord today as well.
