Celebrate a festival to the Lord for seven days. 13 Present as an aroma pleasing to the Lord a food offering consisting of a burnt offering of thirteen young bulls, two rams and fourteen male lambs a year old, all without defect. 14 With each of the thirteen bulls offer a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil; with each of the two rams, two-tenths; 15 and with each of the fourteen lambs, one-tenth. 16 Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and drink offering.

29:39 너희가 이 절기를 당하거든 여호와께 이같이 드릴지니 이는 너희의 서원제나 낙헌제로 드리는 번제, 소제, 전제, 화목제 외에 드릴 것이니라

39 “‘In addition to what you vow and your freewill offerings, offer these to the Lord at your appointed festivals: your burnt offerings, grain offerings, drink offerings and fellowship offerings.’”

29:40 모세가 여호와께서 모세에게 명령하신 모든 일을 이스라엘 자손에게 말하니라

40 Moses told the Israelites all that the Lord commanded him.

                여러분 성경 개역개정판을 보시면 오늘 말씀의 제목을 장막절이라고 적어놓은 것을 보실 수 있으실 겁니다. 지난 주 토요일부터 오늘 말씀까지 하나님께서는 이스라엘 백성들에게 각 절기에 대해 말씀하십니다. 각 절기를 어떻게 지켜야 하는지 말씀하십니다.  그 절기마다 제사는 또 어떻게 드려야 하는지에 대해서 말씀하십니다. 사실 이 절기들은 우리에게 새로운 것이 아닙니다. 왜냐하면 레위기에서 이미 각 절기들에 대해서 설명을 하셨기 때문입니다. 그러나 오늘 말씀에서 이 절기들을 다시 한번 언급하시며 보충 설명하십니다. 레위기에서는 이 절기가 무슨 뜻이고 왜 이 절기를 지키는지에 대해 설명하셨습니다. 그 당시에는 제사에 대한 언급이 그리 많지 않았습니다. 시내 산을 떠나 광야 생활을 할 이들에게 그만한 제사를 드릴 수 있는 능력이 없었기 때문입니다. 그러나 오늘 말씀은 조금 다릅니다. 이들은 약속의 땅을 눈 앞에 두고 있습니다. 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅입니다. 그런 그들에게 하나님께서는 오늘 30여절의 말씀을 통하여 이들에게 엄청난 양의 제사를 요구하십니다. 그렇다면 이들은 이 말씀을 듣고 시험에 들었을까요? 아니 지금 우리는 광야에 있는데 어떻게 이렇게 많은 제사를 요구하실 수 있는가? 아마도 아닐 것입니다. 이들은 이것을 하나님의 축복의 약속이라고 생각했을 것입니다. 약속의 땅에 들어가면 하나님께서 우리를 얼마나 축복하실 것이기에 이런 제사를 말씀하시는가? 가슴이 뛰었을지 모릅니다. 여러분 오늘은 축복의 약속에 대한 마땅한 반응이라는 제목으로 말씀을 전하기 원합니다.

You'll see in your Bibles, the New King James Version, that today's sermon title is "The Feast of Tabernacles." From last Saturday until today's message, God has been speaking to the Israelites about their various feasts. He tells them how each feast should be observed, and how sacrifices should be offered for each one.

These feasts aren't new to us, of course. We've already heard about them in Leviticus. However, in today's passage, God mentions these feasts once more and provides additional explanations. In Leviticus, He explained the meaning of each feast and why they were to be observed. At that time, there wasn't much mention of sacrifices, because the people, having left Mount Sinai and living in the wilderness, didn't have the means to offer such extensive sacrifices.

Today's passage, however, is a bit different. They're on the cusp of entering the Promised Land, a land flowing with milk and honey! And to them, through nearly 30 verses, God demands an enormous amount of sacrifices. So, did this passage cause them to stumble? Did they say, "Wait a minute, we're still in the wilderness! How can God demand so many sacrifices?" I don't think so. I believe they saw this as a promise of God's blessing. Their hearts might have pounded with excitement, thinking, "How much will God bless us when we enter the Promised Land, that He would speak of such sacrifices?"

Today, I want to share a message titled, "A Fitting Response to the Promise of Blessing."

                먼저는 오늘 하나님께서 말씀하시는 것은 바로 축복의 약속이라는 것입니다. 여러분 오늘 말씀에 나오는 초막절은 가을의 마지막 절기입니다. 이 초막절은 조금 특이한게요 두가지 의미가 한꺼번에 내포되어 있습니다. 그 첫번째는 하나님의 구원을 기뻐하는 것입니다. 초막절을 처음 설명하고 있는 레위기 23:43절은 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “이는 내가 이스라엘 자손을 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 내던 때에 초막에 거주하게 한 줄을 너희 대대로 알게 함이니라 나는 너희의 하나님 여호와이니라” 바로 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성들을 노예 생활하던 애굽에서 구출해 내셔서 하나님의 백성으로서 초막에 거하게 하신 것을 기뻐하는 절기입니다. 그래서 레위기 23:40을 보면 “첫 날에는 너희가 아름다운 나무 실과와 종려나무 가지와 무성한 나무 가지와 시내 버들을 취하여 너희의 하나님 여호와 앞에서 이레 동안 즐거워 할 것이라” 나뭇가지들로 초막을 만들어 7일동안 하나님 앞에 기뻐하라고 말씀하고 계시지요. 8일 째에는 안식하라고 하십니다.

The Promise of Blessing

First, what God is speaking about today is indeed a promise of blessing. The Feast of Tabernacles, or Sukkot, mentioned in today's passage, is the final feast of the autumn season. This feast is somewhat unique because it carries two meanings simultaneously.

The first is rejoicing in God's deliverance. Leviticus 23:43, which first explains the Feast of Tabernacles, says this: "so your descendants will know that I had the Israelites live in temporary shelters when I brought them out of Egypt. I am the1 Lord your God." It's a feast to celebrate God rescuing the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and having them dwell in tents as His people. That's why Leviticus 23:40 says, "On the first day you are to take branches from luxuriant trees—palm fronds, leafy branches and poplars—and rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days." God tells them to make temporary shelters with branches and rejoice before Him for seven days. On the eighth day, He tells them to rest.

초막절의 두번째 의미는 바로 초막절이 우리나라로 치면 추석과 같은 의미를 갖고 있습니다. 유대 음력 7월 15일은 동양의 음력 8월 15일과 같은 날입니다. 즉, 정확히 우리나라의  추석에 해당하는 날입니다. 한 해 농사의 결과를 맛보는 날입니다. 풍성한 추수의 기쁨이 있는 날입니다. 그래서 가을의 마지막 절기인 이 초막절을 다른 말로 수장절이라고도 부릅니다. 거둘 수, 감출 장, 즉 과실을 추수하여 저장하는 것을 기념하는 절기이기도 한 것입니다. 신명기 16:13, 15절은 초막절을 이렇게 적고 있습니다. “너희 타작 마당과 포도주 틀의 소출을 거두어 들인 후에 이레 동안 초막절을 지킬 것이요… 네 하나님 여호와께서 네 모든 소출과 네 손으로 행한 모든 일에 복 주실 것이니 너는 온전히 즐거워할지니라” 여러분 이렇게 하나님이 주시는 복을 맛보는 때가 바로 초막절입니다. 그런데 이스라엘 백성은 아직 가나안 땅에 입성하지도 못한 상태였습니다. 아직 농사를 짓지도 않았고, 추수한 곡식도 없습니다. 그런데 하나님께서는 이들이 농사를 짓고 추수한 이후에 하나님께 바치라는 규례를 주셨습니다. 그것도 막대한 양을 바치라고 하십니다. 이것이 무슨 뜻입니까? 바로 하나님께서 이들이 바치는 것 이상으로 풍성히 주시겠다는 하나님의 약속이며 보증인 것입니다. 하나님의 축복의 약속인 것입니다.

The second meaning of the Feast of Tabernacles is that it's similar to Thanksgiving in American culture. The 15th day of the 7th month in the Jewish calendar is comparable to what was traditionally a time of harvest celebrations. It's a day to enjoy the fruits of a year's labor, a day of abundant harvest joy. That's why this final feast of autumn, the Feast of Tabernacles, is also called the Feast of Ingathering. It commemorates the gathering and storing of the harvest.

Deuteronomy 16:13, 15 describes the Feast of Tabernacles this way: "Celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles for seven days after you have gathered the produce of your threshing floor and your winepress...2 For seven days celebrate the festival to the Lord your God at the place the Lord will choose. For the Lord your God will bless you in all your harvest3 and in all the work of your hands, and your joy will be complete."4 Friends, the Feast of Tabernacles is a time to taste the blessings God gives.

However, the Israelites hadn't even entered the land of Canaan yet. They hadn't farmed, nor had they harvested any crops. Yet, God gave them regulations to offer sacrifices after they had farmed and harvested. And He told them to offer an enormous amount! What does this mean? It's God's promise and guarantee that He would give them far more abundantly than what they could offer. It's a promise of God's blessing.

자 두번째로, 이런 하나님의 축복의 약속에 우리는 마땅히 반응해야 합니다. 오늘 말씀을 보시면 양이 많아 보이지만 반복이 많을 뿐 그 내용은 사실 간단합니다. 12-16절까지 첫째 날 드려야 하는 제물을 설명합니다. 숫송아지 13마리, 숫양 2마리, 일년생 숫양 14마리 그에 따른 소제와 속죄 제물로 드릴 숫염소 한마리. 자 17절부터 34절까지 둘째 날부터 일곱째 날 까지는 다른 건 다 똑같습니다. 숫송아지 양만 하나씩 줄어요. 둘째 날에는 12마리, 셋째 날에는 11마리 이렇게 일곱째 날에는 7마리까지 줍니다. 나머지 숫자는 다 똑같아요. 같은 말씀을 계속 반복하고 있습니다. 35절부터 38절까지의 여덟째 날이 조금 다른데요. 이 날은 모임을 갖고 안식일로 드리며 제사의 규모를 다른 제사들과 같이 줄임으로써 일상으로 돌아갈 수 있도록 준비시키십니다. 이 초막절 첫날에만 드리는 제물이 모두 서른 두마리였고 7일간 제물의 총합은 189마리나 되었습니다. 이는 다른 명절에 비해 압도적으로 많은 수량입니다. 그런데 이 대부분의 제물을 모두 불태우는 번제로 드립니다. 여러분 번제는 언제 드립니까? 번제는 두가지의 경우에 드립니다. 하나는 죄와 연관되어 하나님의 진노를 가라앉히기 위해 드립니다. 또 하나는 하나님에 대한 전적인 헌신을 보이고 싶을 때 드립니다. 아브라함이 이삭을 번제로 드리려 할 때가 그러하였고 노아가 홍수 이후에 하나님께 전적으로 헌신할 때에 번제를 드렸습니다. 여러분 14절의 소제는 언제 드립니까? 소제는 마치 왕께 바치는 조공이라고 생각하시면 좋습니다. 내가 하나님께 충성하겠다는 선물이며 예물인 것이지요. 하나님께서는 오늘 말씀을 통해 이들에게 엄청난 축복의 약속을 하십니다. 너희가 약속의 땅으로 들어가면 내가 너희를 이렇게 축복할 것이니 너희가 내 앞에서 즐거워하여라. 그러나 너희가 나의 엄청난 축복으로 풍성한 추수를 누릴 때에 너희는 그것을 너희가 이루었다고 생각하지 말아라. 너희의 마땅한 반응은 바로 나에 대한 전적인 헌신이다. 너희의 왕인 나에게 충성하는 것을 잊지 말아라. 그것이 바로 오늘 하나님께서 이들에게 이 규례를 주시는 이유인 것입니다. 아직 가나안 땅에 들어가기도 전에 하나님의 축복의 약속에 대한 마땅한 반응을 먼저 알려주시는 것입니다.

Our Fitting Response to the Promise

Now, second, we must respond appropriately to this promise of God's blessing. If you look at today's passage, it may seem long, but it's actually quite simple; it's mostly repetition. Verses 12-16 describe the sacrifices to be offered on the first day: 13 young bulls, 2 rams, 14 male lambs a year old, along with their grain offerings, and one male goat for a sin offering.

From verse 17 to 34, from the second day to the seventh day, everything else is the same; only the number of young bulls decreases by one each day. On the second day, there are 12; on the third day, 11; and so on, until the seventh day, when there are 7. The other numbers remain the same. The same instructions are repeated over and over.

The eighth day, from verses 35 to 38, is a little different. On this day, they were to hold an assembly and observe a Sabbath. By reducing the scale of the sacrifices, similar to other sacrifices, God was preparing them to return to their daily lives.

On the first day of the Feast of Tabernacles alone, 32 animals were offered. The total number of sacrifices over the seven days was an astonishing 189 animals! This is an overwhelmingly larger quantity than any other feast. And most of these sacrifices were burnt offerings, completely consumed by fire.

Friends, when do we offer burnt offerings? Burnt offerings are offered in two situations. One is to appease God's wrath in connection with sin. The other is when we want to show total dedication to God. This was the case when Abraham was about to offer Isaac as a burnt offering, and when Noah offered burnt offerings after the flood to show his complete devotion to God.

And when do we offer grain offerings, as mentioned in verse 14? Think of a grain offering as a tribute offered to a king. It's a gift, an offering, showing our loyalty to God. Through today's passage, God makes an enormous promise of blessing to them. He says, "When you enter the Promised Land, I will bless you so greatly that you will rejoice before Me. But when you enjoy an abundant harvest from My immense blessing, do not think you accomplished it yourselves. Your fitting response is total dedication to Me. Do not forget your loyalty to Me, your King." That is precisely why God gives them these regulations today. Even before they enter the land of Canaan, God is teaching them their fitting response to His promise of blessing.

말씀을 맺습니다. 하나님께서 이들에게 엄청난 축복의 약속을 하십니다. 그리고 그 축복의 약속은 또한 하나님의 축복에 대한 그들의 마땅한 반응이기도 합니다. 오늘 본문의 39-40절은 지난 토요일부터 설명하신 공적인 제사에 대한 각주입니다. 하나님께서는 매일의 제사와 안식일 제사, 매달 첫날, 초하루의 제사, 유월절의 제사, 칠칠절의 제사, 일곱째달 초하루의 제사, 대속죄일의 제사, 그리고 오늘 초막절의 제사까지 이 모든 제사를 개인의 제사와 분리하여 지킬 것을 모세를 통하여 직접 명령하십니다. 왜 일까요? 이들에게 끊임없이 기억하게 하시는 것입니다. 이들의 주인이 누구인지. 이들의 왕이 누구인지. 여러분 하나님께서 여러분을 축복하신 줄 믿습니다. 그렇다면 여러분의 왕되신 하나님께 여러분이 마땅히 보여야할 반응은 무엇입니까? 오늘 말씀 40절은 하나님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다라고 하지 않습니다. 모세에게 명령하셨다고 하십니다. 하나님께서 명령하신 하나님의 축복의 약속에 대한 우리의 마땅한 반응. 그것을 기억하시며 하나님 앞에 나아가기 원합니다. 함께 기도하겠습니다.

Conclusion

To conclude, God makes an enormous promise of blessing to them. And that promise of blessing also calls for their fitting response to God's blessing. Verses 39-40 of today's passage are a footnote to the public sacrifices that have been explained since last Saturday. God directly commands Moses that all these sacrifices—the daily sacrifices, the Sabbath sacrifices, the sacrifices for the first day of each month, the Passover sacrifices, the Feast of Weeks sacrifices, the sacrifices for the first day of the seventh month, the Day of Atonement sacrifices, and today, the Feast of Tabernacles sacrifices—are to be observed separately from individual sacrifices.

Why? To constantly remind them who their Master is. Who their King is. Friends, I believe God has blessed you. So, what is the fitting response you should show to God, your King? Verse 40 doesn't say God spoke to Moses. It says He commanded Moses.

Let us remember our fitting response to God's commanded promise of blessing and draw near to Him. Let us pray together.
