27:1 요셉의 아들 므낫세 종족들에게 므낫세의 현손 마길의 증손 길르앗의 손자 헤벨의 아들 슬로브핫의 딸들이 찾아왔으니 그의 딸들의 이름은 말라와 노아와 호글라와 밀가와 디르사 라

27:2 그들이 회막 문에서 모세와 제사장 엘르아살과 지휘관들과 온 회중 앞에 서서 이르되

27:3 우리 아버지가 광야에서 죽었으나 여호와를 거슬러 모인 고라의 무리에 들지 아니하고 자기 죄로 죽었고 아들이 없나이다

27:4 어찌하여 아들이 없다고 우리 아버지의 이름이 그의 종족 중에서 삭제되리이까 우리 아버지의 형제 중에서 우리에게 기업을 주소서 하매

1 The daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They came forward 2 and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting and said, 3 “Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the Lord, but he died for his own sin and left no sons. 4 Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”

27:5 모세가 그 사연을 여호와께 아뢰니라

27:6 여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되

27:7 슬로브핫 딸들의 말이 옳으니 너는 반드시 그들의 아버지의 형제 중에서 그들에게 기업을 주어 받게 하되 그들의 아버지의 기업을 그들에게 돌릴지니라

5 So Moses brought their case before the Lord, 6 and the Lord said to him, 7 “What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father’s relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them.

27:8 너는 이스라엘 자손에게 말하여 이르기를 사람이 죽고 아들이 없으면 그의 기업을 그의 딸에게 돌릴 것이요

27:9 딸도 없으면 그의 기업을 그의 형제에게 줄 것이요

27:10 형제도 없으면 그의 기업을 그의 아버지의 형제에게 줄 것이요

27:11 그의 아버지의 형제도 없으면 그의 기업을 가장 가까운 친족에게 주어 받게 할지니라 하고 나 여호와가 너 모세에게 명령한 대로 이스라엘 자손에게 판결의 규례가 되게 할지니라

8 “Say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. 9 If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. 11 If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law for the Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.’”

                지난 2020년은 미국 여성 참정권 100주년이 되는 해였습니다. 미국같이 자유와 평등을 국가 기조로 삼는 나라에서 인구의 절반을 차지하는 여성이 투표권을 가지게 된 것이 고작 100여년 밖에 되지 않았다니 참 놀라운 일이지요. 지금과는 다르게 당시에 여성이 정치에 참여하는 것은 상상하기 어려운 권리였다고 합니다. 이미 모든 법과 규례가 남성만이 정치에 참여하는 것을 상정하고 만들어져 있었고 사회적인 인식도 여성의 정치 참여에 대해 부정적이었습니다. 그러나 여성 참정권 운동가들은 여성 또한 남성과 함께 사회의 대등한 구성원이라는 믿음을 잃지 않았습니다. 그들은 18세기 후반부터 시작한 오랜 싸움 끝에 20세기 초인 1920년에 법과 사회의 변화를 이끌어낼 수 있었습니다. 오늘 말씀의 슬로브핫의 딸들의 이야기가 그렇습니다. 그들 또한 하나님의 약속에 대한 굳건한 믿음이 있었습니다. 비록 그들은 당시의 율법과 규례의 사각지대에 있던 사람들이었지만 담대히 하나님의 약속을 구했습니다. 그런 그들에게 하나님께서는 슬로브핫 딸들의 말이 옳다 라고 하십니다. 그리고 그들만을 구제하시는 것이 아니라 이 사례를 규례로 만들어 같은 상황을 겪을 사람들도 함께 구제하십니다. 오늘은 슬로브핫의 딸들의 이야기를 통해 하나님의 약속을 믿고 담대히 구하라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

Brothers and sisters, in 2020, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage in the United States. It's truly astonishing, isn't it? In a nation like America, founded on the principles of freedom and equality, it had only been about a century since half its population—women—gained the right to vote. Unlike today, the idea of women participating in politics back then was almost unimaginable. All the laws and regulations were crafted with the assumption that only men would engage in the political sphere, and societal perception was largely negative towards women's involvement.

Yet, the suffragettes, those brave women, never lost their faith that women, too, were equal members of society alongside men. After a long struggle that began in the late 18th century, they managed to bring about legal and social change in 1920, at the dawn of the 20th century.

Today's passage about the daughters of Zelophehad is very much like their story. They, too, had an unwavering faith in God's promises. Even though they found themselves in a blind spot of the laws and regulations of their time, they boldly sought God's promise. And what was God's response to them? He declared, "The daughters of Zelophehad are right!" (Numbers 27:7). And not only did He provide a solution for them, but He established this very case as a permanent statute, ensuring that all who found themselves in similar circumstances would also receive the same benefit.

Today, I want to share a message with you titled "Believe God's Promise and Ask Boldly," drawn from the story of Zelophehad's daughters.

                첫번째 슬로브핫의 딸들은 하나님의 약속을 믿었습니다. 오늘 말씀을 간단히 요약하면 슬로브핫의 딸들이 자신들의 아버지에게 아들이 없어 기업을 받을 수 없는 점을 가지고 모세에게 나아와 간청하는 내용입니다. 허나 재미있는 것은 그들이 아직 받지도 못한 기업을 가지고 마치 그것이 기정 사실인냥 다루고 있다는 점입니다. 이들에게는 하나님의 약속이란 이루어 지는가 이루어 질 수 없는가 같은 가능성의 문제가 아니었습니다. 전 세대를 한 번 생각해 보십시오. 그들은 약속의 땅을 직접 정탐하고 그 땅이 하나님이 약속하신 대로 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅이라는 것을 보고 들었습니다. 그러나 그 땅의 민족이 그들의 눈에 강대하고 성읍이 견고하다는 보고에 그들은 다시 애굽으로 되돌아가고자 했습니다. 그들에게는 하나님의 약속이란 사람의 약속 같이 때에 따라 지켜질 수도, 지켜지지 않을 수도 있는 것이었습니다. 그러나 오늘 말씀의 슬로브핫의 딸들은 하나님의 약속을 마치 기정 사실처럼 믿었습니다. 그들이 하는 말을 보십시오. 4절입니다. “어찌하여 아들이 없다고 우리 아버지의 이름이 그의 종족 중에서 삭제되리이까 우리 아버지의 형제 중에서 우리에게 기업을 주소서 하매” 여러분 이들은 단순히 땅을 구하는 것이 아닙니다. 이들이 구하는 것은 그들의 아버지의 이름이 하나님이 주시는 기업을 통하여 남는 것입니다. 2차 인구조사를 통해 우리는 이스라엘의 각 지파와 각 가문들의 이름이 하나님의 약속 가운데 있는 것을 보았습니다. 슬로브핫의 딸들은 자신들도 이런 하나님의 약속에서 제외되지 않고 포함되게 해달라고 요청하는 것입니다. 하나님의 가나안 땅 약속이 반드시 이루어질 것이라는 확고한 믿음이 있었기에 내 아버지의 가문도 하나님의 약속이 이루어지는 것을 보게 해달라는 말입니다. 여러분 우리는 하나님의 약속을 이렇게 실제적으로 믿고 있습니까? 어쩌면 이들에게는 가능성에 불과한 일일수도 있었습니다. 그들의 전 세대는 분명 실패한 일이었고 그것을 이들은 알고 있었을 것입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 지금 그들은 그 약속이 이미 이루어진 것처럼 믿고 실제적인 땅의 분배를 요청하고 있습니다. 이것은 결코 쉬운 일이 아니었습니다. 엄청난 용기가 필요한 일이었습니다.

First, The Daughters of Zelophehad Believed God’s Promise.

To summarize today's passage: the daughters of Zelophehad approached Moses to appeal their situation, as their father had no sons, which meant they wouldn't inherit the family land. But what's fascinating is that they spoke about an inheritance they hadn't yet received as if it were already a done deal. For them, God's promise wasn't a matter of possibility—whether it could or couldn't be fulfilled.

Think back to the previous generation. They had personally scouted the Promised Land, and they saw and heard that it was indeed a land flowing with milk and honey, just as God had promised. However, when they reported that the people of that land were mighty and their cities fortified, they wanted to return to Egypt. For them, God's promise was like a human promise—something that might or might not be kept, depending on the circumstances.

But the daughters of Zelophehad in today's passage believed God's promise as if it were an established fact. Look at their words in verse 4: "Why should our father's name disappear from his clan just because he had no son? Give us property among our father's relatives." (Numbers 27:4).

Friends, they weren't simply asking for land. What they desired was for their father's name to endure through the inheritance God was giving. Through the second census, we see that the names of each tribe and family in Israel were part of God's promise. Zelophehad's daughters were asking to be included in this divine promise, not excluded. They had unwavering faith that God's promise regarding the land of Canaan would surely be fulfilled, and so they said, "Let my father's family also see God's promise come to pass."

Do we truly believe God's promises in such a tangible way? For them, it might have seemed like a mere possibility. Their previous generation had clearly failed, and they would have known this. Yet, despite that, they believed the promise was already a reality and were asking for the actual distribution of the land. This was by no means easy. It required immense courage.

                두번째, 슬로브핫의 딸들은 믿음에 근거한 용기로 담대히 구했습니다. 여러분 오늘 말씀 1절에 이 슬로브핫의 딸들을 자세히 소개하고 있습니다. 이들의 족보를 언급하고 이들의 이름 하나 하나 일일이 다 적고 있습니다. 심지어 며칠 전에 보았던 2차 인구조사에서도 이들의 이름을 일일이 나열하고 있습니다. 왜 일까요? 그만큼 이들이 낸 목소리가 파격적이었다는 것입니다. 모든 사람이 이들을 기억해야할 만큼 이들이 중요한 일을 했다는 것입니다. 여러분 당시에 여성은 사람 수를 셀 때에 포함되지도 않을 만큼 그 지위가 낮았습니다. 여러분 당시의 모든 율법과 규례는 재산을 아들에게 상속하도록 명시하고 있었습니다. 자신의 사회적 지위가 이미 낮습니다. 그리고 율법과 규례도 이들을 이미 무시하고 있는 상황입니다. 그런데 2절을 보니 이들은 그럼에도 불구하고 나아와서 회막 문에 섰습니다. 모세와 제사장 엘르아살과 지휘관들과 온 회중 앞에 서서 담대하게 이 요청을 하고 있습니다. 여러분 이것은 두려움을 넘어선 엄청난 용기입니다. 그리고 그런 담대함이 가능했던 것은 바로 이들이 하나님의 약속의 성취를 믿었기 때문입니다. 하나님께서는 이들의 담대한 요청을 들으시고 이렇게 말씀하십니다. 7절입니다. “슬로브핫 딸들의 말이 옳으니 너는 반드시 그들의 아버지의 형제 중에서 그들에게 기업을 주어 받게하되” 하나님께서 이들의 용기있는 요청을 들으시고 바로 “그들이 옳다”라고 인정하십니다. 그리고 그들에게 즉각적인 해결책을 주십니다. 그런데 오늘 말씀은 거기에 그치지 않습니다. 8절부터 11절까지 앞으로 이와 비슷한 상황에 처한 이들을 구제할 수 있는 영구적인 규례를 마련하게 하십니다. 보잘것 없어 보이는 다섯자매였지만 그들이 하나님의 약속을 믿고 담대히 구했을 때에 하나님께서는 그들의 목소리를 들으셨을 뿐만 아니라 그들의 요청을 통해 하나님의 공의를 많은 이들에게 더욱 확장시키십니다.

Second, The Daughters of Zelophehad Asked Boldly, Based on Their Faith.

Friends, verse 1 of today's passage introduces the daughters of Zelophehad in detail. Their genealogy is mentioned, and each of their names is listed. Even in the second census we looked at a few days ago, their names were listed individually. Why? Because the voice they raised was revolutionary. It means they did something so significant that everyone should remember them.

At that time, women had such a low status that they weren't even included when counting the population. All the laws and regulations of the day explicitly stated that property should be inherited by sons. Their social standing was already low, and the laws and regulations seemed to completely disregard them.

Yet, verse 2 tells us that despite all this, they came and stood at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. They stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders, and the entire assembly, and they boldly made their request. Friends, this was an act of tremendous courage, transcending fear. And that boldness was possible precisely because they believed in the fulfillment of God's promise.

God heard their bold request and said this in verse 7: "What Zelophehad's daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father's relatives and1 turn their father's inheritance over to them." (Numbers 27:7).2

God heard their courageous request and immediately acknowledged, "They are right." And He provided them with an immediate solution. But today's passage doesn't stop there. From verses 8 to 11, God establishes a permanent statute that will benefit others who face similar situations in the future. Though they were just five seemingly insignificant sisters, when they believed God's promise and asked boldly, God not only heard their voice but also further extended His justice to many through their request.

                말씀을 맺습니다. 슬로브핫의 딸들은 하나님의 약속을 믿고 담대히 구했습니다. 우리는 얼마나 실제적으로 하나님의 약속을 믿고 있습니까? 우리가 하나님의 약속을 믿고 구할 수 없을 것 같을 때에라도 담대함을 가지고 하나님 앞에 나아갈 때가 바로 지금입니다. 하나님께서 슬로브핫의 딸들을 통하여 당신의 공의를 널리 펼치셨듯이 지금 여러분의 담대한 요청을 기다리고 계실지도 모릅니다. 이시간 함께 담대하게 하나님께 부르짖으며 나아가기 원합니다.

Conclusion

To conclude, the daughters of Zelophehad believed God's promise and asked boldly. How practically do we believe God's promises today? Even when we feel we cannot ask, now is the time to come before God with boldness. Just as God widely unfolded His justice through the daughters of Zelophehad, He may be waiting for your bold request right now. This morning, I want us to cry out to God boldly together and move forward.
