21:1 네겝에 거주하는 가나안 사람 곧 아랏의 왕이 이스라엘이 아다림 길로 온다 함을 듣고 이스라엘을 쳐서 그 중 몇 사람을 사로잡은지라

21:2 이스라엘이 여호와께 서원하여 이르되 주께서 만일 이 백성을 내 손에 넘기시면 내가 그들의 성읍을 다 멸하리이다

21:3 여호와께서 이스라엘의 목소리를 들으시고 가나안 사람을 그들의 손에 넘기시매 그들과 그들의 성읍을 다 멸하니라 그러므로 그 곳 이름을 호르마라 하였더라

1 When the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming along the road to Atharim, he attacked the Israelites and captured some of them. 2 Then Israel made this vow to the Lord: “If you will deliver these people into our hands, we will totally destroy their cities.” 3 The Lord listened to Israel’s plea and gave the Canaanites over to them. They completely destroyed them and their towns; so the place was named Hormah.

21:4 백성이 호르 산에서 출발하여 홍해 길을 따라 에돔 땅을 우회하려 하였다가 길로 말미암아 백성의 마음이 상하니라

21:5 백성이 하나님과 모세를 향하여 원망하되 어찌하여 우리를 애굽에서 인도해 내어 이 광야에서 죽게 하는가 이 곳에는 먹을 것도 없고 물도 없도다 우리 마음이 이 하찮은 음식을 싫어하노라 하매

4 They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go around Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way; 5 they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!”

21:6 여호와께서 불뱀들을 백성 중에 보내어 백성을 물게 하시므로 이스라엘 백성 중에 죽은 자가 많은지라

21:7 백성이 모세에게 이르러 말하되 우리가 여호와와 당신을 향하여 원망함으로 범죄하였사오니 여호와께 기도하여 이 뱀들을 우리에게서 떠나게 하소서 모세가 백성을 위하여 기도하매

6 Then the Lord sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. 7 The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.

21:8 여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 불뱀을 만들어 장대 위에 매달아라 물린 자마다 그것을 보면 살리라

21:9 모세가 놋뱀을 만들어 장대 위에 다니 뱀에게 물린 자가 놋뱀을 쳐다본즉 모두 살더라 

8 The Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.

아론의 죽음 후 호르산을 떠난 이스라엘 백성들은 계속되는 행진 가운데 두 가지의 사건을 맞딱뜨립니다. 첫 번째는 아랏 족속과의 전쟁이고 두 번째는 불 뱀 재앙입니다. 이 두 사건 속에서 이스라엘 백성들이 각각 잘한 행동과 잘못한 행동들이 나옵니다. 이때 우리는 이스라엘 백성들의 잘잘못 여부와 상관없이 신실하신 약속과 구원의 하나님을 만날 수 있습니다.

After Aaron’s death, the Israelites left Mount Hor and encountered two significant events during their continued journey: the first was the war with the Canaanite king of Arad, and the second was the plague of fiery serpents. In these two events, the Israelites demonstrated both commendable and wrongful behaviors. Yet, regardless of whether the Israelites were right or wrong, we meet the God of faithful promises and salvation through these stories.

1. 구원의 하나님을 구하라

먼저 이스라엘 백성들이 잘한 행동부터 살펴보겠습니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 호르산에서 나와 북쪽으로 향했습니다. 추측하건데 에돔 땅으로 통과를 하지 못했으니 북쪽으로 계속 나아가 방어력이 취약한 지역을 찾아 가나안 진입을 시도한 걸로 보입니다. 그랬더니 1절에서 보듯이 아랏의 왕이 이 소식을 듣고 이스라엘을 공격했습니다. 아랏 지역은 가나안 바로 아랫 지역에 위치합니다. 여기에 나온 ‘아다림 길’은 ‘정탐꾼들의 길’로 해석됩니다. 그말은 즉 과거 열두 정탐꾼들이 갔던 바로 그 길인 것입니다. 사실 지금 아랏 족속과의 전쟁이 이루어지고 있는 이 지역은 과거 40년 전에 광야 생활을 시작할 때 이스라엘 백성들이 하나님의 말을 거역했던 장소였습니다.

1. Seek the God of Salvation

Let’s first look at what the Israelites did well. After leaving Mount Hor, the Israelites moved northward. Since they were denied passage through Edom, it seems they attempted to enter Canaan by seeking a region with weaker defenses. As seen in verse 1, the king of Arad heard this and attacked Israel. Arad was located just south of Canaan. The “Way of Atharim” mentioned here is interpreted as “the way of the spies,” indicating it was the very path the twelve spies had taken in the past. Interestingly, the region where this war with the Aradites occurred was the same area where, 40 years earlier, the Israelites had rebelled against God at the beginning of their wilderness journey.

민수기 14장에서 정탐꾼들의 보고를 들은 이스라엘 백성들이 두려움으로 원망이 넘쳐난 후 하나님의 심판으로 40년간 광야에서 방황하는 죄를 받았습니다. 그리고 그 직후 백성들이 후회하여 모세가 말렸음에도 불구하고 굳이 가나안 진입을 시도하다 아말렉인과 가나안인들에게 패해 호르마까지 퇴각했었죠 (민 14:45). 이 호르마라는 장소에서 과거에는 대패를 했으나 약 40년 후에는 대승을 거둡니다. 무엇이 바뀌었을까요?

In Numbers 14, after hearing the spies’ report, the Israelites were filled with fear and complaints, which led to God's judgment: 40 years of wandering in the wilderness. Soon after, they regretted their actions and, despite Moses’ warning, attempted to enter Canaan anyway, only to be defeated by the Amalekites and Canaanites and retreat as far as Hormah (Num 14:45). Though they suffered a crushing defeat at Hormah back then, about 40 years later, they achieved a great victory there. What changed?

하나님께서 함께하시는 여부가 바뀌었습니다. 2절을 보면 이스라엘 백성들이 하나님을 붙잡습니다. 하나님께 서원하니 하나님께서 그들의 목소리를 들으십니다. 그리하여 그들에게 아랏 족속을 넘겨 다 진멸케 하십니다. 반면에 과거에는 모세의 경고처럼 “여호와께서 너희 중에 계시지 아니하니 올라가지 말라 너희의 대적 앞에서 패할까 하노라 (민 14:42)” 하나님께서 함께하시지 않았습니다. 과거 출애굽 1세대 이스라엘 백성들은 후회와 미련으로 얼룩진 회개를 했지만 이미 늦었었죠. 그들은 문제 앞에서 불평과 원망으로 하나님께 반항했었습니다. 그러나 지금 출애굽 2세대들은 문제 앞에서 하나님께 도움을 구하며 의지했습니다. 전쟁에서 승리한 장소에 붙인 ‘호르마’라는 뜻은 ‘진멸, 파멸’이라는 뜻입니다. 이스라엘 백성들이 서원한 것에 맞게 하나님이 승리를 허락해 주셨습니다.

It was whether or not God was with them. In verse 2, the Israelites clung to God. They made a vow to the Lord, and God heard their voices and delivered the Canaanites into their hands for complete destruction. In contrast, in the past, as Moses had warned, “The Lord is not with you. Do not go up, or you will be defeated by your enemies” (Num 14:42). God was not with them then. The first generation of Israelites who came out of Egypt repented only after regret and hesitation—but it was too late. In the face of problems, they had rebelled against God with complaints. But now, the second generation turned to God and relied on Him when facing challenges. The name "Hormah," which means "destruction" or "devotion to destruction," marked the victory God gave them in response to their vow.

이처럼 우리도 또한 인생의 위기나 문제 앞에서 쉽게 불평이나 원망 대신에 이 일을 허락하신 하나님의 뜻을 먼저 생각해봐야 합니다. 그리고 하나님을 믿고 의지하는 자에게 가장 선하시고 좋은 것을 허락하시는 분이심을 기억해야 합니다. 고린도전서 10장 13절 말씀 “사람이 감당할 시험 밖에는 너희가 당한 것이 없나니 오직 하나님은 미쁘사 너희가 감당하지 못할 시험 당함을 허락하지 아니하시고 시험 당할 즈음에 또한 피할 길을 내사 너희로 능히 감당하게 하시느니라”를 기억해야합니다. 우리의 한계는 하나님의 그 크신 뜻을 다 알지 못한다는 것입니다. 당장 오늘 하루 무슨 일이 일어날지도 모르는 연약한 존재입니다. 그러나 우리가 할 수 있는 것은 문제의 상황을 맞닥뜨렸을 때 어떻게 반응할지 선택하는 것입니다.

In the same way, when we face crises or problems in life, instead of quickly resorting to complaints or bitterness, we must first seek the purpose of God who allowed the situation. We must remember that He grants the best and most gracious outcomes to those who believe and depend on Him. As 1 Corinthians 10:13 reminds us:

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

Our limitation is that we cannot fully understand God’s vast will. We are weak beings who don’t even know what will happen today. But what we can do is choose how we respond when faced with difficulties.

2. 구원의 하나님을 바라보라

이제 이스라엘 백성들이 잘못한 행동입니다. 아랏 족속과의 승리에도 불구하고 이스라엘 백성들은 더 이상 그곳을 통과해 북쪽인 가나안으로 나아가지 않고 다시 남쪽으로 방향을 돌립니다. 아마 애초에 40년전부터 하나님이 허락하신 길이 아니었을 것입니다. 그리하여 다시 에돔 땅을 우회하며 호르산을 거쳐 홍해길을 따라 밑으로 쭉 왔던 길을 다시 내려갑니다. 이리하여 백성들의 마음이 상하여 다시 5절에보면 원망이 터져나옵니다. 모세뿐만 아니라 직접적으로 하나님을 원망합니다. 그리고 하나님의 은혜와 보살핌의 상징인 ‘만나’마저 ‘하찮은 음식’으로 폄하합니다. 그리하여 하나님께서 징계로 불 뱀들을 백성들 사이로 보내십니다. 6절에 많은 백성들이 죽은 걸로 볼때 이 불뱀들은 맹독성을 가진 독사였을 것입니다.

2. Look to the God of Salvation

Now let’s look at what the Israelites did wrong. Despite their victory over the king of Arad, the Israelites did not continue north into Canaan but turned back south. Perhaps the path they had initially tried 40 years ago was not the way God had permitted. So, they again bypassed Edom, retraced their steps past Mount Hor, and traveled down along the Red Sea road. As a result, the people grew impatient, and in verse 5, complaints broke out once more. This time, they not only grumbled against Moses but directly against God. They even insulted the manna, the symbol of God’s grace and provision, calling it “worthless food.” In response, God sent fiery serpents among them as punishment. Given that many people died (verse 6), these were likely venomous snakes.

7절에 “백성이 모세에게 이르러 말하되 우리가 여호와와 당신을 향하여 원망함으로 범죄하였사오니 (민 21:7a)” 보니 또 이스라엘 백성들이 뒤늦은 후회를 합니다. 과거 버릇 얼마 못가죠. 불행 중 다행인건 회개가 빠르다는 거예요. 그리고 이번에도 모세에게 중재의 기도를 요청합니다. 모세도 정말 대단한 것이 이제 이판사판으로 이스라엘 백성들을 손절할 법도 하지 않습니까? 어차피 가나안 땅도 못들어가고 이스라엘 백성들의 불평이 질릴법도 한데 그 넓은 온유함으로 다시 한번 그들을 위해 하나님 앞에 기도합니다.

In verse 7, the people say to Moses, “We sinned when we spoke against the Lord and against you” (Num 21:7a), once again showing belated regret. Old habits return quickly. However, at least this time they repented quickly and asked Moses to intercede in prayer. It’s remarkable that Moses didn’t give up on them. He had every reason to wash his hands of the people—after all, he wouldn’t even enter Canaan himself, and their constant complaints must have worn him down. Yet in his great humility, he once again prayed on their behalf.

그리고 여기서 우리는 또한 끝까지 포기하지 않으시는 긍휼의 하나님을 만날 수 있습니다. 이스라엘 백성들이 잘못하여 죄값을 치루는 가운데에도 살 길을 열어주십니다. 8절 “여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 불 뱀을 만들어 장대 위에 매달아라 물린 자마다 그것을 보면 살리라.” 뱀에게 물려서 독이 퍼져나가 시름시름 죽어가고 있을 때 들려온 한 소식! “장대 위에 달린 놋 뱀을 쳐다보기만 하면 산다”는 이 소식을 과연 모두가 아멘으로 받았을까요? 말도 안되는 소리 하지 말라며 귓등으로도 안듣고 무시한 사람들의 결과는 죽음이었을 것입니다. 반면에 암담한 상황 속에서도 하나님의 능력을 믿어 그 말을 듣고 행동으로 옮긴 사람들은 다 살았을 것입니다. 모두에게 똑같이 들려지고 똑같이 선택의 기회가 주어진 이 구원의 방법은 지금 현재 우리들에게도 똑같이 주어집니다. 놋 뱀을 쳐다본 사람마다 생명을 얻은 것처럼, 십자가에 달린 예수님을 믿는 사람은 누구나 구원을 얻습니다.

Here we also encounter the merciful God who never gives up. Even as the people were paying for their sins, God provided a way for them to live. In verse 8, “The Lord said to Moses, ‘Make a fiery serpent and put it on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.’” Imagine hearing this when you’ve been bitten and are dying from venom: “If you just look at the bronze serpent on the pole, you’ll live.” Did everyone receive this message with faith? Probably not. Some likely dismissed it as nonsense—and they died. But those who believed in God’s power even in that desperate situation and acted on the instruction were saved. This salvation method, which was equally heard and equally available to all, is also given to us today. Just as those who looked at the bronze serpent were healed, all who believe in Jesus on the cross receive salvation.

죄 가운데 빠져 빛도 희망도 없는 상태인 우리 인간들을 위해 예수님을 통하여 구원을 이루신 하나님. 이 사실이 귀에 들리고 믿어지게 해주신 그 은혜에 감사하길 원합니다. 정말 귀가 막히고 눈이 가리어져서 진리를 듣고도 깨닫지 못하는 자들이 얼마나 많습니까. 다 하나님의 은혜입니다. 또한 이 복음을 우리 각자에게 전달해준 사람들에게 감사하길 원합니다. 먼저 믿음을 가진 한 사람이 다른 한 사람의 영혼을 위해 진심으로 생각하며 그 좋은 소식을 전할 때 복음이 땅 끝까지 전해질 수 있으리라 믿습니다.

God, who provided salvation through Jesus for us humans, lost in sin, without light or hope—let us be thankful for the grace that allows this truth to be heard and believed. So many are deaf and blind to the truth and cannot understand it even when they hear it. It is all by God’s grace. Let us also be thankful for those who brought the gospel to each of us. When someone who already has faith sincerely thinks of another soul and shares this good news, we believe the gospel can reach the ends of the earth.
