20250421 [새벽묵상] 상황이 아니라 시각이 문제입니다 | Situation isn't the Problem, the Perspective is (민/Num 14:1~10)

14:1 온 회중이 소리를 높여 부르짖으며 백성이 밤새도록 통곡하였더라

14:2 이스라엘 자손이 다 모세와 아론을 원망하며 온 회중이 그들에게 이르되 우리가 애굽 땅에서 죽었거나 이 광야에서 죽었으면 좋았을 것을

14:3 어찌하여 여호와가 우리를 그 땅으로 인도하여 칼에 쓰러지게 하려 하는가 우리 처자가 사로잡히리니 애굽으로 돌아가는 것이 낫지 아니하랴

14:4 이에 서로 말하되 우리가 한 지휘관을 세우고 애굽으로 돌아가자 하매

1 That night all the members of the community raised their voices and wept aloud. 2 All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this wilderness! 3 Why is the Lord bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?” 4 And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.”

14:5 모세와 아론이 이스라엘 자손의 온 회중 앞에서 엎드린지라

14:6 그 땅을 정탐한 자 중 눈의 아들 여호수아와 여분네의 아들 갈렙이 자기들의 옷을 찢고

14:7 이스라엘 자손의 온 회중에게 말하여 이르되 우리가 두루 다니며 정탐한 땅은 심히 아름다운 땅이라

14:8 여호와께서 우리를 기뻐하시면 우리를 그 땅으로 인도하여 들이시고 그 땅을 우리에게 주시리라 이는 과연 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅이니라

14:9 다만 여호와를 거역하지는 말라 또 그 땅 백성을 두려워하지 말라 그들은 우리의 먹이라 그들의 보호자는 그들에게서 떠났고 여호와는 우리와 함께 하시느니라 그들을 두려워하지 말라 하나

5 Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown in front of the whole Israelite assembly gathered there. 6 Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes 7 and said to the entire Israelite assembly, “The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good. 8 If the Lord is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. 9 Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them.”

14:10 온 회중이 그들을 돌로 치려 하는데 그 때에 여호와의 영광이 회막에서 이스라엘 모든 자손에게 나타나시니라

10 But the whole assembly talked about stoning them. Then the glory of the Lord appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites.

제가 한국에서 살 때 근처에 유명한 S 백화점이 있었습니다. 강남 한복판에 있는 백화점 주변은 늘 붐볐고, 덕분에 주차난에 시달렸습니다. 그런데 백화점은 VIP고객만을 위한 주차장을 따로 마련하여 그들은 늘 편안하게 주차할 수 있었습니다. 한 번도 그곳으로 들어가지 못해서 그들도 주차비를 정산하는지, 아니면 무료인지는 알 수 없었지만, 어쨌든 이런 서비스는 소위 파레토 법칙Pareto principle에 근거하여 시행하는 것입니다.

파레토 법칙은 다른 말로 80대20의 법칙이라고도 합니다. 이 용어를 경영학에 처음으로 사용한 사람은 조셉 M. 주란인데, '이탈리아 인구의 20%가 이탈리아 전체 부의 80%를 가지고 있다'고 주장한 이탈리아의 경제학자 빌프레도 파레토Vilfredo Federico Damaso Pareto의 이름에서 따왔다고 합니다.

이러한 법칙은 약간의 차이는 있지만, 거의 모든 영역에서 적용되는 것을 발견합니다. 백화점 같은 경우 VIP고객들 20%가 전체 매상의 80%를 소비합니다. 그러니 주차장을 따로 서비스해 주는 것입니다. 

교회 경영이나 영적인 믿음도 마찬가지입니다. 20%의 사람들이 80%의 일을 합니다. 건강한 교회 일수록 20%가 30%로 30%가 40%으로 늘어납니다. 함께 리드하는 사람이 많은 것입니다.

오늘 본문을 보면 12명의 가나안 정탐꾼이 있었는데, 40일간 정탐을 마치고 이스라엘 진으로 돌아와 보고를 하는데, 10명은 자신들이 정탐한 땅은 거인들이 살고 있고 자신들은 메뚜기와 같아서 반드시 패할 것이라고 그 땅을 악평합니다(13:32). 반면에 여호수아 갈렙만이 그 땅은 심히 아름다운 땅이라고 호평합니다. 총 12명 중에 2명의 비율을 계산해 보니 반올림하여 83:17 입니다. 악평한 자는 83%이고, 호평한 자는 17%입니다. 거의 파레토 법칙에 맞아 떨어집니다. 나는 80에 해당하는 자입니까? 20에 해당하는 자입니까?

When I was living in Korea, there was a famous department store, S Department Store, near where I lived. Located in the heart of Gangnam, the area around the store was always bustling with people, and as a result, there was a constant struggle to find parking. However, the department store had a separate parking area reserved exclusively for VIP customers, so they were always able to park comfortably. I never had the chance to park there myself, so I don’t know whether they had to pay or if it was free—but either way, that kind of service is typically provided based on what's known as the Pareto Principle.

The Pareto Principle is also known as the 80/20 rule. The term was first applied to business management by Joseph M. Juran, but it comes from the name of Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, who observed that 20% of the population in Italy owned 80% of the country’s wealth.

With slight variations, this principle seems to apply to nearly every area of life. In the case of department stores, for example, 20% of VIP customers are responsible for 80% of the total sales. That’s why they receive special services like dedicated parking.

The same can be said for church ministry and even spiritual commitment. Often, 20% of the people are doing 80% of the work. In a healthy church, that 20% grows into 30%, and then 30% becomes 40%. It means more people are stepping up to lead together.

In today’s passage, we see that there were 12 spies sent to explore Canaan. After 40 days of exploration, they returned to the Israelite camp to give their report. Ten of them gave a negative report, saying that giants lived in the land and that they felt like grasshoppers in comparison—there was no way they could win (Numbers 13:32). In contrast, only Joshua and Caleb gave a positive report, describing the land as exceedingly good.

Out of the 12, only 2 gave a favorable report. That works out to a ratio of 83:17 when rounded. Those who spoke negatively made up 83%, while those with faith made up 17%. That’s almost perfectly in line with the Pareto Principle.

So here’s the question:Are you part of the 80—or the 20?

원망은 믿음의 문제입니다 (1~4절)

10명의 정탐꾼의 악평을 듣고는 이스라엘 백성들은 부르짖으며 밤새도록 대성통곡합니다(1).

이어서 그들은 모세와 아론을 원망하고, 칼에 맞아 죽느니 차라리 애굽이나 광야에서 죽는 것이 나았다고 말합니다. 또한 자신들의 처자가 사로잡힐 것이니 다른 지도자를 세워 애굽으로 돌아가자고 말합니다. 

한가지 의문이 듭니다. 주님이 주신 선한 땅을 악하다고 보고한 정탐꾼들이 문제인가요? 아니면 그들의 보고를 듣고서 밤새도록 통곡하며 원망한 이스라엘 백성들이 문제인가요?

사실 두 그룹은 동일한 그룹입니다. 그들은 부정적이며, 불신앙의 그룹입니다.

믿음의 반대말은 불신앙이 아니라 두려워하는 마음이고, 부정적인 생각입니다.

그리고 원망은 바로 이러한 마음으로부터 출발합니다. 믿음이 없는 자들은 이처럼 두려움과 부정적인 생각에 쉽게 사로잡힙니다. 문제는 이러한 두려움과 부정적 생각은 매우 전염성이 강하다는 사실입니다.

이것은 공동체를 망치는 최고의 방법이고, 사탄이 주로, 매우 자주 사용하여 성공하는 방법입니다.

우리는 생각해 보아야 합니다. 나는 가정과 공동체에 두려움과 부정을 전염시키는 숙주는 아닌지?!

결국 원망은 100% 믿음의 문제입니다. 믿음이 있느냐, 없느냐 문제인 것입니다.

한편 모세와 아론은 이스라엘 회중 앞에서 엎드렸습니다(5). 이에 대해서는 글렌 S. 마틴 Glen S. Martin

은 모세와 아론은 여호와꼐서 악화되는 반역에 반응하실 것을 알고 수치심과 모멸감으로 땅에 엎드렸다 고 말합니다. 존 칼빈 John Calvin은 모세와 아론은 폭도가 된 백성들에게 대항치 않고 그들 앞에서 이 모든 상황을 하나님께 맡긴다는 표시로 엎드려 간구하였다 말합니다. 개인적으로 두 지도자는 지침과 절망감에 모든 것을 포기하는 심정으로 하나님 앞에 운명을 맡기고 엎드린 것으로 보입니다.  

원망은 위대한 지도자도 지치게 합니다.   

Grumbling Is a Matter of Faith (Numbers 14:1–4)

After hearing the negative report from the ten spies, the Israelites cried out and wept loudly all night long (v.1).

They then began to grumble against Moses and Aaron, saying that it would have been better to die in Egypt or in the wilderness than to be struck down by the sword. They even said their wives and children would be taken as plunder, and suggested appointing a new leader to take them back to Egypt.

This raises an important question:Were the ten spies who gave the bad report the real problem?Or was the problem the Israelites who listened to that report and spent the night weeping and grumbling?

In truth, these two groups are one and the same. They belong to the same camp—negative and full of unbelief.

The opposite of faith is not simply disbelief; it's a heart filled with fear and negative thinking.

And grumbling comes directly from that mindset.Those who lack faith are easily overtaken by fear and negativity.And the problem is, fear and negativity are highly contagious.

This is one of the most effective ways to destroy a community—and one of Satan’s most frequently used, and most successful, tactics.

We need to ask ourselves honestly:Am I a carrier of fear and negativity in my family or community?

In the end, grumbling is 100% a matter of faith.It all comes down to one question:Do I have faith—or don’t I?

Meanwhile, Moses and Aaron fell facedown in front of the whole assembly of Israel (v.5).On this, Glen S. Martin explains that Moses and Aaron fell to the ground out of shame and humiliation, knowing that the Lord would respond to the escalating rebellion.John Calvin interprets their action as an expression of surrender—not resisting the angry crowd, but entrusting the entire situation to God in prayer.Personally, I believe these two leaders were overwhelmed and exhausted, and in a state of utter despair, they threw themselves before God, entrusting everything to Him.

Grumbling wears out even the greatest leaders.

동일한 상황을 바라보는 다른 시각 (6~10절)

여호수아와 갈렙은 같은 상황을 목격했지만, 이 둘은 전혀 다른 반응을 보입니다. 그들은 우리가 정탐한 땅은 심히 아름다운 땅이라고 말합니다(7). 이 둘은 10명의 정탐꾼과 다른 곳을 보고 온 것일까요?

그렇지 않은 것을 우리는 잘 알고 있습니다. 여호수아와 갈렙은 파레토 법칙에서 20%에 해당하는 영적인 VIP, 80%의 군중을 이끌어 가는 지도자였던 것입니다.

이러한 자들은 최고 지도자와 비전을 같이하면서 일반인들이 보지 못하는 비전을 보는 사람들입니다.

이러한 자들은 여호와께서 우리 삶의 인도자가 되심을 믿는 자이며, 그를 거역하지 않고, 여호와께서 우리의 보호자이심을 믿고, 두려움 없이 앞으로 전진하는 자입니다.

동일한 상황을 보면서도 그들은 소망을 발견합니다. 이런 자가 비전의 사람이요, 믿음의 사람입니다.

믿음은 같은 상황을 바라보아도 전혀 다르게 봅니다. 그러니까 우리 인생에 발생하는 문제는 상황이 문제가 아니라, 우리의 믿음 없는 시각, 원망하는 시각이 문제였던 것입니다.

이런 자들은 옳은 소리, 믿음의 소리를 합니다. 그런데 문제는 옳은 소리, 믿음의 소리의 대가입니다.

그 대가는 온 회중이 그들을 돌로 치려는 것이었습니다(10a). 회중은 10번 칭찬하다가, 한 번 잔소리하면 냉정하게 뒤돌아 섭니다. 그 한번의 잔소리조차 용납되지 않는 것이 죄인인 인간, 바로 우리 자신입니다.

하지만 하나님은 모세와 아론, 여호수아와 갈렙을 돌 맞을 위기에 내버려 두지 않았습니다.

그때에 여호와의 영광이 회막에서 이스라엘 모든 자손에게 나타나시니라(10b).  

드디어 주인공이 등장한 것입니다. 이제 이 이야기는 완전히 다른 국면으로 접어 들것입니다.

차라리 모세의 말을 듣는 것이 훨씬 좋았을 것입니다. 내일 본문에서 계속 이어질 것입니다.

한가지 더 생각해 봅니다. 다행히도 오늘 본문은 돌 맞을 위기 가운데 하나님의 직접적인 개입으로 새로운 국면으로 접어 들었습니다. 하지만 매우 동일한 상황 가운데서 하나님이 그저 지켜만 보신 경우가 있습니다.

A Different Perspective on the Same Situation (Numbers 14:6–10)

Joshua and Caleb witnessed the same situation as the others, but their response was entirely different. They said, “The land we explored is exceedingly good” (v.7).Did these two men go to a different land than the other ten spies?

Of course not—we know very well that wasn't the case.Joshua and Caleb represent the 20% in the Pareto Principle—spiritual VIPs, leaders who rise above the crowd and help guide the remaining 80%.

Such people share the vision of the highest leader. They are the ones who can see what others cannot.They believe that the Lord is the One who leads their lives. They do not rebel against Him, but trust that He is their protector, and they move forward without fear.

Though they face the same situation as everyone else, they see hope.These are the people of vision—the people of faith.

Faith allows us to see the same situation through a completely different lens.So, the real issue in our lives isn't the situation itself, but rather our faithless perspective—a perspective shaped by grumbling and doubt.

People of faith speak truth. They speak words of faith.But here’s the problem: there is often a cost to speaking truth and faith.

That cost?The entire assembly tried to stone them (v.10a).The crowd may praise you ten times, but turn on you the moment you say something uncomfortable.This is human nature—our sinful tendency. We can’t even tolerate a single word of correction.

And yet, God did not leave Moses, Aaron, Joshua, and Caleb to face the stones alone.

“Then the glory of the Lord appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites.” (v.10b)Finally, the main character enters the scene.From this point on, the story shifts into an entirely new phase.

It would have been far better for the people if they had simply listened to Moses.We’ll continue with the rest of this story in tomorrow’s passage.

But there’s one more thing to reflect on:Thankfully, in today’s story, God intervened directly at the moment of crisis.But there are times when God watches in silence—even in the very same kind of situation.

사도행전 7장에 등장하는 스데반 집사 사건입니다. 그의 설교는 은혜와 이를 갈게 하는 두 가지 반응을 가져왔습니다. 군중들은 돌을 들어 스데반을 치려 했습니다. 하지만 하나님은 오늘 본문처럼 직접 개입하시지 않습니다. 스데반의 환상 가운데 보니, 그저 천국 보좌에서 일어나 스데반을 응원만 하십니다. 결국 그는 돌에 맞아 죽습니다. 이것이 영적인 파레토 법칙에서 20%에 해당하는 자들의 운명일 수 있습니다. 그래도 이 길을 가시겠습니까? 그렇다면 당신은 어쩌면 2%에 해당하는 분일 것입니다. 상황이 문제가 아닙니다. 그것을 보고 해석하는 나의 시각의 문제입니다. 

This brings us to the story of Stephen in Acts 7.His sermon provoked two very different reactions: for some, it was full of grace; for others, it stirred rage. The crowd picked up stones to kill him.

But unlike today’s passage, God does not intervene directly.In Stephen’s vision, he simply sees the Lord standing at the throne of heaven—cheering him on.And in the end, Stephen is stoned to death.

This may be the fate of those who belong to the 20% in the spiritual Pareto Principle.

Still, will you choose this path?

If so, you might even belong to the 2%.

The problem is not the situation—The real issue is how I see it, and how I interpret it.
