12:1 예수께서 비유로 그들에게 말씀하시되 한 사람이 포도원을 만들어 산울타리로 두르고 즙 짜는 틀을 만들고 망대를 지어서 농부들에게 세로 주고 타국에 갔더니

12:2 때가 이르매 농부들에게 포도원 소출 얼마를 받으려고 한 종을 보내니

12:3 그들이 종을 잡아 심히 때리고 거저 보내었거늘

12:4 다시 다른 종을 보내니 그의 머리에 상처를 내고 능욕하였거늘

12:5 또 다른 종을 보내니 그들이 그를 죽이고 또 그 외 많은 종들도 더러는 때리고 더러는 죽인지라

1 Jesus then began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place. 2 At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. 3 But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 4 Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully. 5 He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed.

12:6 이제 한 사람이 남았으니 곧 그가 사랑하는 아들이라 최후로 이를 보내며 이르되 내 아들은 존대하리라 하였더니

6 “He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’

12:7 그 농부들이 서로 말하되 이는 상속자니 자 죽이자 그러면 그 유산이 우리 것이 되리라 하고

12:8 이에 잡아 죽여 포도원 밖에 내던졌느니라

7 “But the tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 8 So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

12:9 포도원 주인이 어떻게 하겠느냐 와서 그 농부들을 진멸하고 포도원을 다른 사람들에게 주리라

12:10 너희가 성경에 건축자들이 버린 돌이 모퉁이의 머릿돌이 되었나니

12:11 이것은 주로 말미암아 된 것이요 우리 눈에 놀랍도다 함을 읽어 보지도 못하였느냐 하시니라

9 “What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others. 10 Haven’t you read this passage of Scripture:

“‘The stone the builders rejected

    has become the cornerstone;

11 the Lord has done this,

    and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”

12:12 그들이 예수의 이 비유가 자기들을 가리켜 말씀하심인 줄 알고 잡고자 하되 무리를 두려워하여 예수를 두고 가니라

12 Then the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd; so they left him and went away.

예수님의 공생애 마지막 한주간을 고난주간 또는 수난주간이라고 말합니다. 오늘 본문은 화요일 논쟁의 날에 일어난 사건입니다. 오늘 비유에서 포도원은 이스라엘을 그리고 그것을 만든 한 사람, 곧 포도원 주인은 하나님을 상징합니다. 소작인은 바로 그 포도원의 관리 임무를 부여 받은 유대 지도자들입니다.

그리고 보냄 받은 종들은 예언자(선지자)이고, 상속자인 아들은 예수님 자신을 상징합니다.

스토리는 간단합니다. 주인이 포도원을 만들어 소작인들에게 맡기고 타국에 가서, 얼마 후에 그 소출 일부분을 받으려고 종(선지자)들을 보내지만 소작인들이 종들을 때리고 죽입니다. 그러자 주인은 내 아들은 존대할 것을 기대하며 보내지만, 오히려 소작인들은 상속자임을 알고 죽여 포도원을 밖에 버립니다. 결국 주인이 와서 그들을 진멸하고 포도원을 다른 사람들에게 줍니다.

The final week of Jesus’ public ministry is called Passion Week or the Week of Suffering. Today's passage describes an event that took place on Tuesday, often referred to as the Day of Controversy. In today’s parable, the vineyard represents Israel, and the man who planted it—the owner of the vineyard—symbolizes God. The tenant farmers are the Jewish leaders who were entrusted with the responsibility of managing the vineyard.

The servants who were sent represent the prophets, and the son, the heir, represents Jesus Himself.

The story is simple: the owner builds a vineyard and entrusts it to tenants. He then travels to a distant country. Later, he sends servants (the prophets) to collect a portion of the harvest. But the tenants beat and kill the servants. Finally, the owner sends his son, expecting they will respect him. Instead, the tenants recognize him as the heir, kill him, and throw him out of the vineyard. In the end, the owner comes, destroys the wicked tenants, and gives the vineyard to others.

1. 포도원 비유 (1~9절)

그러면 예수님께서는 이 짧은 풍유적 이야기를 통해서 사람들이 무엇을 깨닫기를 원하셨을까요?

먼저는 종말의 때가 있음을 알기를 원했습니다.

이스라엘은 포도원 주인이신 하나님의 아들 예수를 죽이고 결국에는 심판을 받아 1948년 이스라엘 영토와 주권이 회복되기까지, 거의 2천년을 난민으로 뿔뿔이 흩어져 살았습니다.  

우리 역시 포도원 주인이신 하나님은 반드시 심판하신다는 사실을 기억해야 합니다.

둘째로 예수를 위한 고난과 박해가 있음을 알기를 원했습니다.

사실 현대 사회는 예수님 때문에 고난 받는 일이 거의 없습니다. 그런데도 예수 믿는 것이 어렵다고 말합니다. 무슨 현상일까요? 마틴 로이드 존스는 다음과 같이 말했습니다.

많은 사람들이 그리스도인다운 삶을 사는 것을 어려워하는 이유는

영적으로 자기 자신을 과보호하기 때문이라는 것을 나는 점점 더 확신하게 된다.

기독교의 중흥은 가장 박해가 심했던 시기에 이루어졌습니다. 오늘 기독교의 문제는 결코 희생하려 하지 않는다는 것입니다. 세상 사람들과 똑같은 길을 걷고 있다면 그것은 결코 제자의 길이 아닙니다.

마지막으로 우리에게는 주인이 있음을 알기를 원했습니다.

후안 까를로스 오르티즈 목사는 이 문제에 대한 핵심을 “내 것이 아닙니다. 우리는 단지 청지기 일뿐입니다.” 에서 이야기합니다. 악한 종과 선한 종의 차이는 주인의 존재를 잊느냐 잊지 않느냐 차이입니다. 하나님은 우리에게 온 천지를 맡기시며 누리고 즐기라고 주셨습니다. 우리가 가진 물질, 건강, 시간, 재능 모든 것이 하나님의 주신 것입니다. 마음껏 누리고 즐깁시다! 그러나 잊지 맙시다. 그렇다고 해서 그 모든 것이 나의 것은 아닙니다. 주인이 있습니다.

1. The Parable of the Vineyard (Verses 1–9)

So, what did Jesus want people to understand through this short parable?

First, He wanted them to know that there will be an end time.

Israel killed Jesus, the Son of God and the owner of the vineyard, and as a result, faced judgment. For nearly two thousand years, until the restoration of its land and sovereignty in 1948, Israel was scattered and lived as refugees across the world.

We too must remember that God, the owner of the vineyard, will surely bring judgment.

Secondly, He wanted us to know that suffering and persecution come with following Jesus.

In reality, there is very little persecution for Jesus in today’s society. Yet many still say that it is hard to live as a Christian. Why is that? Martyn Lloyd-Jones once said:

The greatest revivals in Christian history occurred during times of intense persecution. The problem with modern Christianity is that we are often unwilling to make sacrifices. If we are walking the same path as the world, it is not the path of discipleship.

Lastly, He wanted us to know that we have a Master.

Pastor Juan Carlos Ortiz captures the heart of this truth in the statement: “It is not mine. We are merely stewards.”The difference between a wicked servant and a faithful one lies in whether or not they remember the existence of the Master.

God has entrusted us with all of creation to enjoy and steward. Everything we possess—our wealth, health, time, talents—has been given by God. Let us enjoy them fully!But let us not forget: just because we enjoy them does not mean they belong to us. We have a Master. 

2. 모퉁이 돌 (10~12절)

예수님은 이어서 시편 118편을 인용하여 말씀하십니다.

이 비유에서 건축자는 성경 전문가라고 자부하는 사두개인, 제사장, 바리새인들을 의미합니다. 건축자들은 예수라는 돌이 쓸모없는 돌이라고 버렸습니다. 곧 죽였습니다.

하지만 주인이신 하나님은 그 돌을 들어 모퉁이 돌, 곧 건물을 세울 때 가장 중요한 코너 스톤, 주춧돌을 삼으셨습니다. 모퉁이 돌은 건물의 하중을 지탱하는 돌로 건물을 떠받치는 중요한 역할을 감당합니다.

이 돌만 빼 버리면 건물은 무너집니다. 결국 하나님은 예수를 모퉁이 돌 삼아 교회라는 새로운 성전을 건축하신 것입니다. 그러므로 교회는 예수 없이는 존재할 수 없는 공동체인 것입니다.

우리는 여기서 스스로에게 중요한 질문을 해보아야 합니다. 예수님이 정말 내 삶과 나의 가정에 모퉁이 돌이 맞는가? 정말 내 삶에서 예수를 빼면 삶이 무너져 내리는가? 내 삶의 모퉁이 돌이 다른 것은 아닌지, 만일 그렇다면 삶이라는 나의 건축물은 잘못하면 2000년전 예루살렘 성전처럼 무너져 내릴 수 있습니다. 삶이 허무하고, 답답한 것이 어쩌면 지금 모퉁이 돌, 추춧돌을 잘못 놓아서 그럴 수 있습니다. 더 위험하게 쌓아 올리기 전에 다시 처음부터 예수라는 반석위에 다시 쌓아 가야 합니다. 

2. The Cornerstone (Verses 10–12)

Jesus then quotes from Psalm 118.

In this parable, the builders represent the Sadducees, priests, and Pharisees—those who considered themselves experts in Scripture. These builders rejected the stone called Jesus, thinking it useless. In other words, they killed Him.

But God, the true Master, took that very stone and made it the cornerstone—the most essential stone in the foundation of a building. The cornerstone bears the weight of the structure and plays a vital role in supporting the entire building.

If you remove that stone, the building collapses. In the end, God used Jesus as the cornerstone to build a new temple—the Church. That means the Church is a community that cannot exist without Jesus.

At this point, we must ask ourselves a very important question:Is Jesus truly the cornerstone of my life and my home?If Jesus were removed from my life, would everything fall apart?Is something else functioning as the cornerstone of my life?If so, then the structure I’m building—my life—could one day collapse, just as the Temple in Jerusalem did 2,000 years ago.

If your life feels empty or stifled, perhaps it's because the cornerstone was laid wrongly.Before you build any higher and risk greater collapse, it’s time to start again—this time, building upon the rock that is Jesus.

유대인들은 하나님께서 맡긴 포도원, 곧 그 귀한 성전과 예루살렘, 그리고 복음을 가지고 자신들이 주인 노릇을 했습니다. 청지기여야 하는 사람들이 주인 행세를 한 것입니다. 그리고 심지어 주인의 아들을 죽이기까지 했습니다. 그러므로 그들은 자신들의 행위에 대한 심각한 심판을 받았습니다.

이번 고난주간을 맞아 우리는 각자에게 맡기신 하나님의 포도원이 무엇인지 생각해봐야 합니다.

하나님은 먼저 배우자라는 포도원을 맡기셨습니다. 함께 맡기신 포도원 잘 가꾸라고 붙여 주신 배우자 역시 서로가 서로에게 또다른 포도원입니다. 아내라는 남편이라는 포도원에서 거두는 열매를 기쁘게 여기고, 만족하고 누려야 하는데, 많은 부부들이 그렇지 못한 것이 현실입니다.

하나님은 자녀라는 포도원을 맡겼는데, 우리는 포도원을 잘 가꾸려는 욕심이 너무 강해서 오히려 주인이 기뻐하시지 않는 선택을 한 적이 한 두 번이 아닙니다. 하나님보다 맡기신 포도원 자체(자녀)를 더욱 사랑하여 내 욕심대로 자녀를 양육하려 했습니다.

사역의 포도원, 재물의 포도원, 건강의 포도원, 시간이라는 포도원, 인간관계라는 포도원을 맡기셨지만, 우리는 그것들을 너무 열심히 관리하다가 심지어 그것이 내 것이라고 착각하는 단계로 들어섰습니다.

주님이 우리에게서 모든 것을 다시 가져 가시기 전에, 이 모든 것이 주께로 부터 왔음을 알고 있다고 날마다 고백하는 청지기의 삶이 되기를 원합니다. 그러한 청지기에게 예수님은 다음과 같이 말씀하실 것입니다.

그 주인이 이르되 잘하였도다 착하고 충성된 종아 네가 적은 일에 충성하였으매

내가 많은 것을 네게 맡기리니 네 주인의 즐거움에 참여할지어다 (마 25:21)

맡겨 주신 포도원을 잘 관리하고, 주님 손에 다시 올려 드려 착하고 충성된 종이라는 칭찬과 더불어 더 많은 것으로 맡겨 주시는 은총을 받는 종, 선한 청지기가 되기를 주님의 이름을 축복합니다. 

The Jewish people took on the role of masters over the vineyard God had entrusted to them—namely, the precious Temple, Jerusalem, and the Gospel. Those who were supposed to be stewards acted as if they were the owners. They even went as far as to kill the owner's son. Therefore, they received severe judgment for their actions.

As we enter this Passion Week, we must reflect on what vineyard God has entrusted to each of us.

God has first entrusted us with the vineyard of our spouse. The spouse, whom God has given to us, is another vineyard to be cared for. We are to rejoice in the fruits we gather from our husbands and wives, finding satisfaction and enjoyment. Unfortunately, many couples fail to do this in reality.

God has entrusted us with the vineyard of our children, but our desire to care for the vineyard can sometimes lead us to make choices that do not please the Owner. There have been times when we loved the vineyard (our children) more than God, trying to raise them according to our own desires rather than His will.

God has also entrusted us with the vineyard of ministry, wealth, health, time, and relationships. Yet, in our zeal to manage these vineyards, we sometimes fall into the mistake of thinking they belong to us.

Before the Lord takes everything back from us, we must live as stewards, acknowledging daily that all things come from Him. If we live in this way, Jesus will say to us, as He said in Matthew 25:21:

"His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!'”

May we be good stewards, managing the vineyards God has entrusted to us well, and may we receive the Lord's praise and grace, being entrusted with even more. I bless you in the name of the Lord to be faithful stewards!
