20250330 [새벽묵상] 타협할 수 없는 원칙 | Non-Negotiable Principles(민/Num 31:13~24)

31:13 모세와 제사장 엘르아살과 회중의 지도자들이 다 진영 밖에 나가서 영접하다가

31:14 모세가 군대의 지휘관 곧 싸움에서 돌아온 천부장들과 백부장들에게 노하니라

13 Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp. 14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who returned from the battle.

31:15 모세가 그들에게 이르되 너희가 여자들을 다 살려두었느냐

31:16 보라 이들이 발람의 꾀를 따라 이스라엘 자손을 브올의 사건에서 여호와 앞에 범죄하게 하여 여호와의 회중 가운데에 염병이 일어나게 하였느니라

31:17 그러므로 아이들 중에서 남자는 다 죽이고 남자와 동침하여 사내를 아는 여자도 다 죽이고

31:18 남자와 동침하지 아니하여 사내를 알지 못하는 여자들은 다 너희를 위하여 살려둘 것이니라

15 “Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them. 16 “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the Lord’s people. 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

31:19 너희는 이레 동안 진영 밖에 주둔하라 누구든지 살인자나 죽임을 당한 사체를 만진 자는 셋째 날과 일곱째 날에 몸을 깨끗하게 하고 너희의 포로도 깨끗하게 할 것이며

31:20 모든 의복과 가죽으로 만든 모든 것과 염소털로 만든 모든 것과 나무로 만든 모든 것을 다 깨끗하게 할지니라

19 “Anyone who has killed someone or touched someone who was killed must stay outside the camp seven days. On the third and seventh days you must purify yourselves and your captives. 20 Purify every garment as well as everything made of leather, goat hair or wood.”

31:21 제사장 엘르아살이 싸움에 나갔던 군인들에게 이르되 이는 여호와께서 모세에게 명령하신 율법이니라

31:22 금, 은, 동, 철과 주석과 납 등의

31:23 불에 견딜 만한 모든 물건은 불을 지나게 하라 그리하면 깨끗하려니와 다만 정결하게 하는 물로 그것을 깨끗하게 할 것이며 불에 견디지 못할 모든 것은 물을 지나게 할 것이니라

31:24 너희는 일곱째 날에 옷을 빨아서 깨끗하게 한 후에 진영에 들어올 지니라

21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, “This is what is required by the law that the Lord gave Moses: 22 Gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, lead 23 and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire, and then it will be clean. But it must also be purified with the water of cleansing. And whatever cannot withstand fire must be put through that water. 24 On the seventh day wash your clothes and you will be clean. Then you may come into the camp.”

어제 본문에서 12,000명의 군사들이 하나님의 전쟁에서 대승을 거뒀습니다. 그리하여 의기양양하게 진영으로 돌아왔더니 그들을 반기는 것은 모세의 진노였습니다. 신실히 하나님께 온전히 순종하였는데 돌아오는 반응이 영 심상치 않습니다. 뭐가 잘못된 것일까요? 공동체의 거룩을 위해 모세가 절대 타협하지 않는 원칙주의 면모를 보여줍니다. 이를 통해 이스라엘 공동체에게 요구되는 거룩의 중요성을 알아보길 원합니다.

In yesterday’s passage, 12,000 soldiers achieved a great victory in God’s war. They returned triumphantly to their camp, but what greeted them was Moses’ anger. Even though they had faithfully and completely obeyed God, the reaction they received was anything but welcoming. What went wrong? Moses demonstrates an uncompromising commitment to principles for the sake of the community's holiness. Through this, we are reminded of the importance of holiness that is demanded of the Israelite community.

거룩함을 위해 타협할 수 없는 원칙 첫 번째는 죄악의 근원을 남겨놓지 않는 것입니다. 15절을 보면 모세의 화난 포인트를 알 수 있죠. “모세가 그들에게 이르되 너희가 여자들을 다 살려 두었느냐”하고 전쟁에서 돌아온 천부장들과 백부장들에게 묻습니다. 전쟁에서 승리한 뒤 그 나라에서 여러 전리품을 챙겨오는 것은 꽤 타당한 듯 생각이 듭니다. 포로로 여자나 아이들을 데려오기도 하고 가축물들을 챙겨오기도 하죠. 그러나 이들이 미디안 여자들을 살려서 데려온 행동은 미디안 정벌 전쟁을 모조리 말짱 도루묵으로 만드는 행위였습니다. 애초에 이들이 미디안 족속 정벌 전쟁을 하러 나간 이유가 어떻게 되지요? 민수기 25장에서 살펴봤던 바알브올 사건때문이지요. 발람의 계략에 따라 모압과 미디안의 여자들이 이스라엘을 꾀어 음행하며 우상을 숭배하게 했습니다. 이 일로 전염병이 돌아 이스라엘 백성들이 2만 4천 명이나 죽게되는 수치를 당했죠. 이 원수를 갚기위해 정벌 전쟁을 나섰던 것인데 그 죄악의 근원들을 그대로 이스라엘 진영 안으로 데리고 들어오려 했습니다. 그래서 모세가 16절에 이 여자들 중 바알브올 사건에 연루된 자도 있을 것이라 확정적으로 말하는 것이었습니다. 그리하여 처녀와 여자아이만 살려두고 남자와 동침한 적이 있는 여자와 남자 아이는 모두 죽이라고 명령합니다 (17절).

The first non-negotiable principle for holiness is to not leave any root of sin behind. In verse 15, we see the reason for Moses’ anger. He asks the commanders who returned from war, “Have you allowed all the women to live?” From a human standpoint, it might seem reasonable to take plunder from the defeated nation, including women, children, and livestock. However, sparing and bringing back the Midianite women essentially rendered the entire conquest meaningless. Why had they gone to war against Midian in the first place? It was because of the Baal-Peor incident in Numbers 25. According to Balaam’s scheme, Moabite and Midianite women had seduced the Israelites into committing sexual immorality and idolatry. As a result, a plague broke out, killing 24,000 Israelites—a great disgrace. The soldiers were sent to avenge this, but instead, they brought the very root of the problem back into Israel's camp. That’s why in verse 16, Moses definitively states that among these women are those involved in the Baal-Peor incident. Therefore, he commands that only the virgin girls and female children be spared, and that all women who had slept with a man and all male children be killed (verse 17).

이러한 명령이 현대 사회에서 윤리적으로 받아들이기 힘들수도 있습니다. 그러나 하나님의 기준에서 거룩한 이스라엘 진영 안을 자칫 더럽게 만들 수 있는 위험한 요소는 다 없애버려야 하는 원칙이 최우선되었기에 모세가 이런 결단을 할 수 있었던 것입니다. 사도 바울은 경고했습니다. “적은 누룩이 온 덩이에 퍼지느니라” (갈 5:9). 죄악의 씨앗을 멸하지 않고 한번 두번 타협하는 마음을 가지면 결국 죄의 종노릇을 하게 됩니다. 거룩함을 유지하기위해 그 어떤 상황에도 타협할 수 없는 원칙이 이미 벌써 마음 속에 자리잡혀 있어야 유혹이 들어올때 끊어낼 수 있게 되는 것입니다. 마치 매일 새벽예배의 자리를 지키는 여러분들처럼 말입니다. 무슨 일이 있더라도 하나님께 예배와 말씀으로 하루를 시작하겠다는 원칙. 이게 없으면 새벽에 그 따뜻한 침대를 박차고 일어나기란 정말 힘든 일이지요.

This kind of command may be hard to accept ethically in our modern society. However, from God’s perspective, any dangerous element that could defile the holy Israelite camp had to be removed as a top priority. This is why Moses made such a decision. The Apostle Paul warned, “A little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough” (Galatians 5:9). If we don’t destroy the seed of sin and instead compromise once or twice, we end up enslaved to sin. To maintain holiness, we must have unwavering principles already rooted in our hearts, so that when temptation comes, we are able to cut it off. Just like those of you who faithfully attend early morning prayer service. No matter what, you’ve decided to start your day with worship and God’s Word. Without that principle, it would be very difficult to get out of your warm bed in the morning.

또한 모세가 거룩함을 위해 지킨 원칙은 정결 예식에 있습니다. 전쟁에서 돌아온 이들은 기쁨의 승전보를 전했습니다. 그런 그들에게 마땅히 큰 잔치를 통해 승리의 기쁨을 나누고 응당 대우를 해줘야 할 것 같습니다. 그러나 모세는 그들에게 부정하니 7일간 진영 밖에서 지내고 셋째 날과 일곱째 날에는 정결하게하는 잿물을 통해 정결례를 치르게 했습니다(19절). 이는 몸 뿐만 아니라 모든 의복과 나무로 만든 도구 또한 마찬가지 였습니다 (20절). 그리고 금속으로 만든 도구는 다 불 속에 넣어 정결케 한 후 또 잿물로 씻기게 하여 깨끗하게 해야지만 진영 안으로 들고 들어올 수 있었습니다 (23절). 승리의 기쁨에 젖어 시체를 만져 부정해진 군사들을 쉽게 진영 안으로 들여보냈더라면 더 많은 자들이 부정해질 위기를 겪었을 것입니다. 그랬더라면 또 어떠한 하나님의 심판이 그들에게 내려졌을지 알 수 없습니다. 야속해보이더라도 원칙을 지킴으로서 더 큰 피해를 막았습니다.

Another principle Moses upheld for holiness was the cleansing ritual. The soldiers who returned from war brought news of their joyful victory. Naturally, one might think they should be celebrated with a grand feast and honored for their success. But Moses instead declared them unclean and had them remain outside the camp for seven days. On the third and seventh days, they were to be purified with the water of cleansing (verse 19). This applied not only to their bodies, but also to all clothing and wooden articles (verse 20). Metal articles were to be purified through fire and then also cleansed with water before they could be brought into the camp (verse 23). Had Moses allowed those who had touched dead bodies to return to the camp without purification, it could have led to many more becoming unclean. Who knows what further judgment might have come upon them? Though it may have seemed harsh, sticking to the principle prevented greater harm.

이처럼 교회에서 어떠한 행사를 하게될 때 수 많은 결정의 순간들이 옵니다. 기본 방식을 고수하거나 원칙에 어긋나지 않는 선에서 변화를 수용하느냐. 이걸 분별할 수 있는 지혜가 절실합니다. 세상의 방식으로 더 효과적이고 효율적인 방법이 당연히 있을 것입니다. 그러나 그 방식이 교회의 원칙에 어긋나 타협할 수 없다면 담당자로서 어떻게 해야 하는가. 미움을 사더라도 타협하지 않고 정정하여 교회 방향으로 끌고오거나 의견을 수용하여 새로운 방식을 시도한 후 벌어지는 모든 책임을 떠안거나 둘 중 하나겠죠. 특히 이제 VBS가 한 달 앞으로 다가왔는데 두렵습니다. 그러나 감사한 것은 내 능력과 힘을 의지하는 사역이 아니라는 것입니다. 지혜를 구할 하나님 아버지가 계시다는 것입니다. 여러분도 삶 가운데 결정의 순간에 놓이실 것입니다. 죄와 타협을 할 것인가 아니면 거룩함을 위해 유혹을 뿌리치고 원칙을 고수할 것인가. 우리 하나님 앞에 타협할 수 없는 원칙을 세워 거룩하게 승리하는 성도님들 되시기를 기도드립니다.

Likewise, when the church conducts events, many moments of decision arise. Should we stick to the basic methods or accept changes that don’t violate core principles? Wisdom is absolutely needed to discern this. There may indeed be more effective and efficient ways according to worldly standards. But if those ways violate church principles and cannot be compromised, then as a leader, you must choose: either resist compromise and bring things back in line with the church’s direction even if it earns criticism, or take full responsibility after trying a new method. VBS is just a month away, and I feel nervous. But I am thankful that this ministry does not depend on my strength or ability. I have God the Father, from whom I can seek wisdom. You, too, will face moments of decision in your life. Will you compromise with sin, or will you resist temptation and hold firm to holiness? I pray that you will become saints who establish non-negotiable principles before God and achieve holy victory.

결국 모세는 공동체의 거룩성 유지라는 강력한 원칙 앞에 현실과 타협하지 않고 더 큰 피해를 막아 이 사건을 마무리 할 수 있었습니다. 그렇다면 우리가 왜 그렇게 거룩함에 힘써야 하는가 반문할 수 있습니다. 다른 이유 없습니다. ‘하나님이 그렇게 하라고 했으니까’가 답입니다. “오직 너희를 부르신 거룩한 이처럼 너희도 모든 행실에 거룩한 자가 되라 (벧전 1:15)” 말씀하십니다. 세상과 타협하는 존재가 아닌 세상과 구별된 존재로 부르셨습니다. “그런즉 사랑하는 자들아 이 약속을 가진 우리는 하나님을 두려워하는 가운데서 거룩함을 온전히 이루어 육과 영의 온갖 더러운 것에서 자신을 깨끗하게 하자 (고후 7:1)” 예수 그리스도의 핏값으로 칭의를 얻은 우리는 감사와 감격으로 거룩함을 이루어감을 최우선 순위로 놔야겠습니다.

In the end, Moses was able to resolve the situation because he did not compromise with reality but upheld the firm principle of preserving the community's holiness, thus preventing greater harm. You might ask why we should strive so hard for holiness. There is no other reason than this: because God said so. “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do” (1 Peter 1:15). We are not called to blend in with the world but to be set apart from it. “Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God” (2 Corinthians 7:1). As those who have been justified by the blood of Jesus Christ, we must make the pursuit of holiness our highest priority, out of gratitude and awe.
