20:24 열두 제자 중의 하나로서 디두모라 불리는 도마는 예수께서 오셨을 때에 함께 있지 아니한지라

20:25 다른 제자들이 그에게 이르되 우리가 주를 보았노라 하니 도마가 이르되 내가 그의 손의 못 자국을 보며 내 손가락을 그 못 자국에 넣으며 내 손을 그 옆구리에 넣어 보지 않고는 믿지 아니하겠노라 하니라

24 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”


But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”


20:26 여드레를 지나서 제자들이 다시 집 안에 있을 때에 도마도 함께 있고 문들이 닫혔는데 예수께서 오사 가운데 서서 이르시되 너희에게 평강이 있을지어다 하시고

20:27 도마에게 이르시되 네 손가락을 이리 내밀어 내 손을 보고 네 손을 내밀어 내 옆구리에 넣어 보라 그리하여 믿음 없는 자가 되지 말고 믿는 자가 되라

26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”


20:28 도마가 대답하여 이르되 나의 주님이시요 나의 하나님이시니이다

28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”


20:29 예수께서 이르시되 너는 나를 본 고로 믿느냐 보지 못하고 믿는 자들은 복되도다 하시니라

29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”


20:30 예수께서 제자들 앞에서 이 책에 기록되지 아니한 다른 표적도 많이 행하셨으나

20:31 오직 이것을 기록함은 너희로 예수께서 하나님의 아들 그리스도이심을 믿게 하려 함이요 또 너희로 믿고 그 이름을 힘입어 생명을 얻게 하려 함이니라

30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.



                  이번주에 우리는 계속해서 부활하신 예수님에 대한 말씀을 나누고 있습니다. 먼저는 빈 무덤을 가장 먼저 발견한 막달라 마리아부터 그 빈 무덤 안에 들어가서 세마포가 놓인 것과 머리를 쌌던 수건이 개켜져 있는 것을 본 베드로와 또 다른 제자. 그 다른 제자는 무덤을 들어가서 이런 예수님의 부활의 흔적들을 보고 믿었다고 전하고 있지요. 그 뒤에 무덤 밖에서 울고 있던 마리아도 무덤 안에서 두 천사를 만나게 되지요. 또 뒤에 서 계셨던 부활하신 예수님을 만나면서 제자들에게 내가 주를 보았다, 주님께서 나에게 이런 말씀을 하셨다고 자신의 믿음을 고백하는 것을 볼 수 있었습니다. 제자들도 마찬가지이지요. 유대인들이 자신들을 해할까봐 모든 문의 빗장을 걸어잠구고 두려움에 빠져있던 제자들이었습니다. 그런 그들이 부활 하신 예수님을 만나고 주님의 부활하심으로 그들의 두려움이 기쁨이되는 모습을 우리는 볼 수 있었지요. 자 오늘 말씀에 아직도 부활하신 예수님을 보지 못한 도마가 있습니다. 다른 제자들이 도마에게 우리가 주를 보았다고 말을 하는데도 도마는 도저히 믿을 수가 없습니다. 내가 부활하신 예수님을 직접 보고 경험하지 않고서는 믿을 수 없다고 말하는 것이지요. 도마는 보고 믿는 믿음에 대해서 이야기하고 있는 것입니다. 오늘은 이런 도마의 모습을 통하여 보고 믿는 믿음과 보지 못하고 믿는 믿음에 대해서 함께 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.


This week we are continuing to share the message about the risen Jesus. First, Mary Magdalene who discovered the empty tomb, then Peter and the other disciple who entered the empty tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there and the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus' head folded up by itself. The Bible tells us that this other disciple entered the tomb, saw these traces of Jesus' resurrection, and believed. Afterward, Mary who was crying outside the tomb encountered two angels inside. Later, she met the risen Jesus who was standing behind her and confessed her faith to the disciples saying, "I have seen the Lord," and told them what the Lord had said to her.


The same was true for the disciples. They were disciples who had locked all the doors for fear of the Jews and were gripped by fear. We could see how these disciples met the risen Jesus and how their fear turned into joy through the Lord's resurrection. In today's passage, there is Thomas who still has not seen the risen Jesus. Even though the other disciples tell Thomas that they have seen the Lord, Thomas simply cannot believe it. He is saying that he cannot believe without seeing and experiencing the risen Jesus directly. Thomas is talking about faith that comes from seeing and believing. Today, through Thomas' story, I want to share a message about faith that believes after seeing and faith that believes without seeing.



                  첫번째, 보고 믿는 믿음입니다. 서론에서 말씀드렸듯이 막달라 마리아와 많은 제자들이 부활하신 예수님을 직접 경험하였습니다. 그러나 열두 제자 중의 하나인 도마는 오늘 말씀을 보니 예수님께서 오셨을 때에 함께 있지 아니하였다고 합니다. 하필 어떻게 딱 그렇게 도마만이 그 자리에 없었을까요? 참 억울 할 것도 같습니다. 마침 그 자리에 없었던 도마에게 다른 제자들이 우리가 주를 보았노라 라고 하지요. 그러자 도마는 아마도 그들이 유령을 본 것이라고 생각했던 것이 아닌가 싶습니다. 25절에 도마가 그들에게 이렇게 이야기 하지요. “내가 그의 손의 못 자국을 보며 내 손가락을 그 못 자국에 넣으며 내 손을 그 옆구리에 넣어보지 않고는 믿지 아니하겠노라” 단순히 보는 것 만이 아닙니다. 자신이 직접 체험하고 경험하지 않고서는 예수님의 부활을 믿지 않겠다고 다짐하는 모습입니다. 헬라어 원문에는 이중부정과 더불어 절대로 믿지 않겠다는 강한 의지가 나타나는 표현입니다. 우리는 이런 도마의 모습을 보고 도마를 “의심많은 도마”라고 부르는 경우가 많습니다. 그러나 도마가 이런 말을 하는 것도 충분히 이해가 되는 것 같습니다. 앞에서 이야기했던 모든 사람, 즉, 마리아와 제자들 모두 예수님을 보고 믿었지 않았습니까? 그들도 부활하신 예수님을 직접 만나기 전에는 믿음 없이 슬픔과 두려움 가운데 있었지요. 그렇다면 도마 또한 예수님을 직접 보아야만 믿을 수 있다고 말하는 것은 충분히 납득할 만한 이야기입니다. 도마만을 의심이 많다고 이야기 할 수는 없는 것이지요. 자 이제 여드레, 즉 8일이 지났습니다. 예수님께서 이 일주일의 시간 동안 모습을 보이지 않으셨습니다. 아마도 이 시간동안 가장 힘들었을 사람은 도마였을 것입니다. 그래서일까요? 예수님께서 제자들 가운데 다시 나타나시는데 그 나타나시는 목적은 도마 때문인것 같습니다. 26절을 보니 여드레를 지나 제자들이 다시 집안에 있을 때에 이번에는 도마도 함께 있고 지난번 처럼 또 문들이 닫혀있는데 예수님께서 그들 가운데 오셔서 지난번과 같이 이들에게 평강이 있을지어다라고 말씀하십니다. 예수님이 전하시는 평강이 가장 필요했던 사람은 일주일동안 의심과 불신의 안개에 갇혀 힘들었을 도마였겠지요. 그런 도마에게 예수님은 그가 말했던 그대로를 하라고 하십니다. 손가락을 손 못자국에 넣으며 손을 내밀어 옆구리에 넣어보라고 하시지요. 그렇게 하시는 까닭은 무엇입니까? “그리하여 믿음 없는 자가 되지 말고 믿는 자가 되라”고 하십니다. 비록 보고 믿더라도 믿는 자가 되는 것이 중요하다는 것이지요. 예수님을 보고 믿은 도마는 예수님께 “나의 주님이시요 나의 하나님이시니이다”라고 고백합니다. 이 고백은 예수님이 누구신지에 대한 핵심을 간파한 고백이며 신약성경에 나와있는 예수님에 대한 신앙고백 중에 감히 백미라 할 수 있습니다.


First, faith that believes after seeing. As I mentioned in the introduction, Mary Magdalene and many disciples directly experienced the risen Jesus. But Thomas, one of the twelve disciples, was not with them when Jesus came, according to today's passage. Why was Thomas the only one not present at that moment? It seems quite unfortunate for him. The other disciples told Thomas, who happened to be absent, "We have seen the Lord." Thomas probably thought they had seen a ghost. In verse 25, Thomas says to them: "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe." It's not simply about seeing. He is determined not to believe in Jesus' resurrection without directly experiencing it himself. In the original Greek text, it uses a double negative along with an expression indicating a strong will that he would absolutely not believe. When we see Thomas like this, we often call him "Doubting Thomas." However, it seems completely understandable why Thomas would say this. Everyone mentioned earlier—Mary and the disciples—all believed after seeing Jesus, didn't they? They too were without faith, in sorrow and fear, before they directly met the risen Jesus. So it is perfectly reasonable for Thomas to say that he can only believe after seeing Jesus directly. We cannot say that only Thomas had many doubts.


Now eight days have passed. Jesus did not appear during this week. Perhaps the person who struggled the most during this time was Thomas. Is that why Jesus appears again among the disciples? It seems that the purpose of his appearance is because of Thomas. Verse 26 says that after eight days, when the disciples were again inside and this time Thomas was with them, the doors were shut just like before, and Jesus came and stood among them and said to them as before, "Peace be with you." The person who needed the peace that Jesus brings the most was probably Thomas, who had been struggling in the fog of doubt and disbelief for a week. To such a Thomas, Jesus tells him to do exactly what he had said. He tells him to put his finger into the nail marks in his hands and reach out his hand and put it into his side. Why does He do this? "Stop doubting and believe," He says. Even though one believes after seeing, what's important is to become a believer. Thomas, who believed after seeing Jesus, confesses to Jesus, "My Lord and my God." This confession penetrates the core of who Jesus is and can be considered the masterpiece among the confessions of faith about Jesus in the New Testament.



                  이렇게 오늘 말씀은 도마의 이야기를 통해서 보고 믿는 믿음에 대해서만 이야기 하는 것 같습니다. 그러나 그렇지 않지요. 이런 놀라운 개인적인 신앙고백을 하는 도마의 모습을 통해서 오히려 예수님께서는 보지 못하고 믿는 믿음이 복되다고 하십니다. 29절입니다. “예수께서 이르시되 너는 나를 본고로 믿느냐 보지 못하고 믿는 자들은 복되도다 하시니라” 즉 부활하신 예수님을 보고 믿는 믿음이 이렇게 귀하다면 부활하신 예수님을 보지 못하고 믿는 믿음은 더욱 귀하다라는 말씀을 하고 계신 것입니다. 사실 이것이 요한이 요한 복음을 쓴 목적입니다. 예수님께서 부활 하시고 제자들을 포함한 많은 이들에게 그 모습을 보이셨지만 이제 이 요한 복음을 읽고 있는 사람들은 예수님의 부활을 오늘 말씀의 도마처럼 직접 보고 경험 할 수 없지요. 그러나 요한이 기록한 이 말씀을 통하여 우리는 예수께서 부활하셨고 우리의 주님이시며 하나님이심을 듣고 믿을 수 있는 것입니다. 베드로전서 1:8-9 “예수를 너희가 보지 못하였으나 사랑하는도다 이제도 보지 못하나 믿고 말할 수 없는 영광스러운 즐거움으로 기뻐하니 믿음의 결국 곧 영혼의 구원을 받음이라” 오늘 말씀 31절도 같은 말씀을 전하고 있지요. 요한이 요한 복음을 기록한 것은 바로 예수를 보지 못한 “너희로 예수께서 하나님의 아들 그리스도이심을 믿게 하려함이요, 또 너희로 믿고 그 이름을 힘입어 생명을 얻게 하려 함이니라” 즉 오늘 말씀에 도마를 통하여 보고 믿는 믿음에 대해서 말씀하신 것은 모두 보지 못하고 믿는 믿음의 복됨을 더욱 강조하기 위함이였던 것입니다.


Today's passage seems to only talk about faith that believes after seeing through Thomas's story. But that's not the case. Through Thomas's remarkable personal confession of faith, Jesus rather states that those who believe without seeing are blessed. Verse 29 says, "Then Jesus told him, 'Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.'" In other words, if faith that believes after seeing the risen Jesus is this precious, faith that believes without seeing the risen Jesus is even more precious. In fact, this is John's purpose for writing the Gospel of John. After Jesus was resurrected, He showed Himself to many, including the disciples, but the people now reading this Gospel of John cannot directly see and experience Jesus' resurrection like Thomas in today's passage. However, through these words recorded by John, we can hear and believe that Jesus has risen and is our Lord and God. 1 Peter 1:8-9 says, "Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls." Verse 31 of today's passage conveys the same message. John wrote the Gospel of John so that you who have not seen Jesus "may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name." In other words, the reason for speaking about faith that believes after seeing through Thomas in today's passage was all to emphasize even more the blessedness of faith that believes without seeing.



                  말씀을 맺습니다. 도마는 예수님을 보고 믿습니다. 그리고 “나의 주님이시요 나의 하나님이시니이다”라고 놀라운 고백을 합니다. 우리는 예수님의 부활을 보지 못하고 믿습니다. 그러나 예수님께서는 이 믿음이 더욱 복되다라고 하십니다. 이 말씀을 신뢰함으로 복된 믿음을 지키시는 여러분 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 기도하시겠습니다.


I conclude the message. Thomas believes after seeing Jesus. And he makes an amazing confession: "My Lord and my God." We believe in Jesus' resurrection without seeing it. However, Jesus says that this faith is even more blessed. I pray in the Lord's name that you will maintain this blessed faith by trusting in this word. Let us pray.
