18:1 예수께서 이 말씀을 하시고 제자들과 함께 기드론 시내 건너편으로 나가시니 그 곳에 동산이 있는데 제자들과 함께 들어가시니라

1 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.

18:2 그 곳은 가끔 예수께서 제자들과 모이시는 곳이므로 예수를 파는 유다도 그 곳을 알더라

18:3 유다가 군대와 대제사장들과 바리새인들에게서 얻은 아랫사람들을 데리고 등과 횃불과 무기를 가지고 그리로 오는지라

2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. 3 So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.

18:4 예수께서 그 당할 일을 다 아시고 나아가 이르시되 너희가 누구를 찾느냐

4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”

18:5 대답하되 나사렛 예수라 하거늘 이르시되 내가 그니라 하시니라 그를 파는 유다도 그들과 함께 섰더라

18:6 예수께서 그들에게 내가 그니라 하실 때에 그들이 물러가서 땅에 엎드러지는지라

5 “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied.

“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

18:7 이에 다시 누구를 찾느냐고 물으신대 그들이 말하되 나사렛 예수라 하거늘

7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.

18:8 예수께서 대답하시되 너희에게 내가 그니라 하였으니 나를 찾거든 이 사람들이 가는 것은 용납하라 하시니

18:9 이는 아버지께서 내게 주신 자 중에서 하나도 잃지 아니하였사옵나이다 하신 말씀을 응하게 하려 함이러라

8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”

18:10 이에 시몬 베드로가 칼을 가졌는데 그것을 빼어 대제사장의 종을 쳐서 오른편 귀를 베어버리니 그 종의 이름은 말고라

10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)

18:11 예수께서 베드로더러 이르시되 칼을 칼집에 꽂으라 아버지께서 주신 잔을 내가 마시지 아니하겠느냐 하시니라

11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”

18:12 이에 군대와 천부장과 유대인의 아랫사람들이 예수를 잡아 결박하여

18:13 먼저 안나스에게로 끌고 가니 안나스는 그 해의 대제사장인 가야바의 장인이라

18:14 가야바는 유대인들에게 한 사람이 백성을 위하여 죽는 것이 유익하다고 권고하던 자러라

12 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him 13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.

                  예수님께서 잡히시기 전날 밤 제자들에게 마지막으로 가르침을 전하시고 하나님 아버지께 기도하였던 것이 바로 이전 17장까지의 말씀이었습니다. 이제 예수님의 때가 이르렀습니다. 우리는 이전 말씀들을 통하여 유대인들이 예수님을 돌로 치고 죽이려 할 때마다 번번히 예수님께서 피하시거나 숨으셨던 것을 보았습니다. 그들이 예수님을 잡고자 하여도 예수님의 때가 이르지 않아 손을 대는 자가 없었다 라는 말씀을 보았습니다. 그러나 오늘 말씀에서는 예수님께서 자신을 숨기지 아니하십니다. 오히려 자신이 누구인지 드러내시고 그들에게 스스로를 직접 내어주십니다. 그리고 이 모든 것은 말씀을 응하게 하기 위하여. 또 하나님 아버지의 뜻을 이루기 위하여 행하신 것임을 오늘 말씀은 말해 주고 있습니다. 예수님께서 배신을 당하시는 것, 또 하나님의 진노의 잔을 마시는 것, 제자들을 잃지 않는 것 모두 하나님의 말씀과 계획을 이루기 위함임을 보여주고 있습니다. 예수님 당신께서 성자 하나님이심에도 불구하고 예수님께서는 아버지의 뜻을 이루기 위하여 기꺼이 순종하시는 것입니다. 오늘은 이 말씀을 전하기 원합니다. 아버지의 뜻을 위해 기꺼이 순종하시는 예수님.

On the night before Jesus was arrested, He gave His final teachings to His disciples and prayed to God the Father, as we saw in the previous chapter 17. Now, Jesus' time had come. Throughout previous passages, we've seen that whenever the Jews tried to stone or kill Jesus, He repeatedly escaped or hid from them. We read that even when they tried to seize Him, no one laid a hand on Him because His time had not yet come. But in today's passage, Jesus no longer hides Himself. Instead, He reveals who He is and willingly gives Himself up to them. Today's passage tells us that all of this was done to fulfill the Scriptures and to accomplish the Father's will. Jesus' betrayal, drinking the cup of God's wrath, and not losing any of His disciples—all these things were meant to fulfill God's word and plan. Despite being God the Son, Jesus willingly obeyed to fulfill the Father's will. Today, I want to share this message with you: Jesus willingly submitting to the Father's will.

                  첫번째로 예수님께서는 하나님의 뜻을 이루시고자 스스로 자신의 목숨을 버리십니다. 누군가가 예수님의 목숨을 예수님으로부터 빼앗는 것이 아닙니다. 이것은 요한복음 10:17-18의 선한 목자의 비유를 생각나게 합니다. 제가 읽겠습니다. “내가 내 목숨을 버리는 것은 그것을 내가 다시 얻기 위함이니 이로 말미암아 아버지께서 나를 사랑하시느니라 이를 내게서 빼앗는 자가 있는 것이 아니라 내가 스스로 버리노라” 오늘의 말씀도 마찬가지입니다. 18장 1절을 보니 예수님께서 기도를 마치시고 제자들과 함께 겟세마네 동산으로 들어가십니다. 그런데 2절을 보니 이곳은 유다도 아는 곳이었습니다. 예수님께서는 유다의 배신을 피하실 생각이 없으셨던 것입니다. 오히려 예수님이 제자들과 겟세마네 동산으로 가신 것은 유다가 올 것을 기다리셨다고 생각하는 것이 더 정확할 것입니다. 3절을 함께 보겠습니다. “유다가 군대와 대제사장들과 바리새인들에게서 얻은 아랫사람들을 데리고 등과 횃불과 무기를 가지고 그리로 오는지라” 이 말씀은 그 당시 종교 지도자들이 예수님을 어떻게 생각했는지를 정확히 보여줍니다. 또 12제자 중 하나였던 유다조차도 예수님을 그동안 어떻게 생각했는지 보여주는 장면입니다. 여기서 군대라고 번역되어있는 단어는 보통 600명의 로마 군인을 가리키는 용어입니다. 그래서 예수님께서 잡히시는 12절에 보면 천부장이 등장하여 예수님을 결박하는 장면이 나오지요. 이것을 보면 대제사장들과 바리새인들이 분명 빌라도에게 가서 사람들이 몰리는 이 유월절에 예수님이 자신을 메시아 또는 유대인의 왕이라고 말하며 폭동을 일으킬 것이다 라고 얘기했겠지요. 무장된 로마 군대와 유대 성전 경비대를 모두 동원한 것은 이들이 예수님과 제자들이 마치 무장 봉기세력처럼 결사 항전을 할 것이라 예상했던 것입니다. 그리고 실제로 베드로의 반응을 볼 때 그들의 생각은 유효했습니다. 그들은 예수님의 생명을 빼앗으려 했지요. 그러나 4절을 보니 예수님께서는 그 당할 일을 다 아시고도 그들에게 나아가 스스로를 밝히십니다. 그들이 예수님의 생명을 뺏는 것이 아닙니다. 예수님께서는 하나님의 뜻을 위해 기꺼이 스스로 목숨을 버리시는 것입니다.

First, Jesus willingly gives up His own life to fulfill God's will. No one takes Jesus' life from Him. This reminds us of Jesus' parable of the Good Shepherd in John 10:17-18. Let me read it: "The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord." Today's passage is similar. In chapter 18 verse 1, we see that after Jesus finished praying, He and His disciples went into the Garden of Gethsemane. Verse 2 tells us that Judas also knew this place. Jesus had no intention of avoiding Judas' betrayal. Rather, it would be more accurate to say that Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane with His disciples to wait for Judas to come. Let's look at verse 3 together: "So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons." This verse shows exactly how the religious leaders of that time viewed Jesus. It also reveals how even Judas, one of the twelve disciples, had thought about Jesus all along. The word translated as "detachment" here typically refers to about 600 Roman soldiers. That's why in verse 12, when Jesus is arrested, a commander appears and binds Jesus. This shows that the chief priests and Pharisees must have gone to Pilate and told him that during this busy Passover, Jesus would claim to be the Messiah or King of the Jews and cause a riot. They mobilized both armed Roman soldiers and Jewish temple guards because they expected Jesus and His disciples to fight to the death like an armed resistance. And indeed, looking at Peter's reaction, their thinking was valid. They were trying to take Jesus' life. But verse 4 shows that Jesus, knowing everything that was going to happen to Him, still stepped forward and identified Himself. They weren't taking His life from Him. Jesus was willingly giving up His life for God's will.

                  두번째로 예수님은 성자 하나님이심에도 불구하고 아버지의 계획을 이루시는 것에 순종하셨습니다. 예수님을 찾는 이들에게 예수님께서는 6절에 대답하십니다. “예수께서 그들에게 내가 그니라 하실 때에 그들이 물러가서 땅에 엎드러지는 지라” 이상하지요. 예수님께서 자신을 밝히신 것 뿐인데 왜 그들은 땅에 엎드러지는 것일까요? 이것은 예수님께서 내가 그니라 라고 말씀하시는 말씀이 원문에는 내가 ‘스스로 있는 자니라’ 라고 말씀하시는 것이기 때문에 그렇습니다. 예수님께서 당신의 신성. 당신이 하나님이심을 드러내시는 순간입니다. 그 하나님의 존전 앞에 이들은 그들이 의도하지 않았더라도 하나님 앞에 인간이 보여야할 마땅한 반응, 바로 땅에 엎드러지며 절하게 되는 것입니다. 이렇게 당신이 하나님이심을 드러내시면 그에 따른 권능 또한 드러내실 만도 한데 예수님께서는 당신의 신성을 보이심으로 다름아닌 제자들을 보호하십니다. 8절입니다. “내가 그니라 하였으니 나를 찾거든 이 사람들이 가는 것을 용납하라 하시니” 예수님께서 하나님이심을 보이실 때에 하셨던 것이 자신을 내어주시고 제자들을 보호하시는 것이었습니다. 양을 위하여 목숨을 내놓는 선한 목자가 여기 있습니다. 사랑하시되 끝까지 사랑하시는 예수님의 사랑이 여기 있습니다. 그리고 이것은 9절에 보니 하나님의 말씀을 응하게 하려함이러라 라고 합니다. 성자 하나님이신 예수님이 아버지의 계획을 이루시는 것에 순종하시는 것이지요. 이렇게 성자 하나님이신 예수님께서 아버지의 계획에 순종하시는 장면은 바로 다음인 11절에도 나와있습니다. 베드로가 칼을 빼어 응전합니다. 그때에 예수님께서는 베드로를 말리시고 이렇게 말씀하시지요 “아버지께서 주신 잔을 내가 마시지 아니하겠느냐?” 예수님께서는 십자가의 잔을 앞에 두고 성자 하나님이신 자신의 뜻보다 아버지의 계획을 이루시는 것에 순종하셨습니다.

Second, Jesus, despite being God the Son, obeyed in fulfilling the Father's plan. In verse 6, Jesus answers those who are looking for Him: "When Jesus said, 'I am he,' they drew back and fell to the ground." Isn't this strange? Jesus only revealed who He was, so why did they fall to the ground? This is because when Jesus said "I am he," in the original text, He was saying "I AM," revealing His divine nature—that He is God. It was a moment when Jesus revealed His divinity. In the presence of God, these people, whether they intended to or not, showed the proper human response before God—falling to the ground and bowing down. Having revealed His divinity, Jesus could have also displayed His power, but instead, Jesus used His revelation of divinity to protect His disciples. Verse 8 says: "'I told you that I am he,' Jesus answered. 'If you are looking for me, then let these men go.'" When Jesus revealed that He was God, what He did was give Himself up and protect His disciples. Here is the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for His sheep. Here is Jesus' love, loving to the very end. And verse 9 tells us this was to fulfill the word of God. Jesus, God the Son, was obeying in fulfilling the Father's plan. This scene of Jesus, God the Son, obeying the Father's plan also appears in the very next verse, verse 11. Peter draws his sword to fight back. Jesus stops Peter and says, "Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?" Facing the cup of the cross, Jesus submitted to fulfilling the Father's plan rather than His own will as God the Son.

오늘의 말씀은 예수님께서 스스로를 내어주심으로 결박당하시고 대제사장 가야바의 장인인 안나스에게로 끌려가시는 것으로 끝을 맺습니다. 예수님께서 안나스에게로 끌려가셨다라고만 적을 수도 있었을텐데 사도요한은 우리에게 굳이 안나스가 대제사장 가야바의 장인인 것과 이 가야바가 어떠한 인물인지 14절에 해설을 덧붙이고 있습니다. 함께 읽겠습니다. “가야바는 유대인들에게 한 사람이 백성을 위하여 죽는 것이 유익하다고 권고하던 자러라” 이 말씀은 예수님께서 나사로를 살리실 때에 종교 지도자들이 그 표적을 보고 예수님을 이제는 죽이고자 했던 바로 그때에 가야바가 했던 말이었습니다. 11:51은 이 말을 두고 이렇게 말하고 있지요. “이 말은 스스로 함이 아니요” 대제사장 가야바가 이 말을 하였던 것은 아버지 하나님께서 그가 그 해에 대제사장이므로 그 입을 빌려 하나님의 계획을 미리 밝히신 것이었습니다. 이렇듯 예수님께서는 아버지의 계획을 이루시는 것에 순종하셨습니다. 오늘 예수님께서 행하셨던 모든 것들은 다 하나님의 뜻을 위하여 기꺼이 순종하신 것이었지요.

                  말씀을 맺습니다. 예수님께서는 아버지의 뜻을 위하여 기꺼이 순종하셨습니다. 먼저는 아버지의 뜻을 이루고자 스스로 자신의 목숨을 버리십니다. 그리고 당신께서도 성자 하나님이심에도 불구하고 아버지의 계획을 이루시는 것에 순종하십니다. 하나님이신 예수님조차도 아버지의 뜻을 위하여 기꺼이 순종하는 본을 우리에게 보이신 것입니다. 그렇다면 예수님을 따르는 우리도 예수님의 본을 쫓아 우리의 삶에서 하나님의 아버지의 뜻을 찾고 그 뜻을 위하여 기꺼이 순종해야 할 줄로 믿습니다. 기도하시겠습니다.

Today's passage ends with Jesus being bound and taken to Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas the high priest. The apostle John could have simply written that Jesus was taken to Annas, but he adds the explanation that Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas the high priest and describes who Caiaphas was in verse 14. Let's read it together: "Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people." These were the words Caiaphas had spoken when the religious leaders decided to kill Jesus after seeing Him raise Lazarus from the dead. John 11:51 says about this statement: "He did not say this on his own." When the high priest Caiaphas said these words, it was Father God using his position as high priest that year to reveal God's plan in advance through his mouth. Thus, Jesus obeyed in fulfilling the Father's plan. Everything Jesus did today was done in willing obedience to God's will.

To conclude, Jesus willingly obeyed the Father's will. First, He willingly gave up His own life to fulfill the Father's will. And despite being God the Son, He obeyed in fulfilling the Father's plan. Even Jesus, who is God, showed us an example of willingly obeying the Father's will. Therefore, I believe that we who follow Jesus should also follow His example by seeking the Father's will in our lives and willingly obeying it. Let us pray.
