17:20 내가 비옵는 것은 이 사람들만 위함이 아니요 또 그들의 말로 말미암아 나를 믿는 사람들도 위함이니

17:21 아버지여, 아버지께서 내 안에, 내가 아버지 안에 있는 것 같이 그들도 다 하나가 되어 우리 안에 있게 하사 세상으로 아버지께서 나를 보내신 것을 믿게 하옵소서

17:22 내게 주신 영광을 내가 그들에게 주었사오니 이는 우리가 하나가 된 것 같이 그들도 하나가 되게 하려 함이니이다

17:23 곧 내가 그들 안에 있고 아버지께서 내 안에 계시어 그들로 온전함을 이루어 하나가 되게 하려 함은 아버지께서 나를 보내신 것과 또 나를 사랑하심 같이 그들도 사랑하신 것을 세상으로 알게 하려 함이로소이다

20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

17:24 아버지여 내게 주신 자도 나 있는 곳에 나와 함께 있어 아버지께서 창세 전부터 나를 사랑하시므로 내게 주신 나의 영광을 그들로 보게 하시기를 원하옵나이다

24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.

17:25 의로우신 아버지여 세상이 아버지를 알지 못하여도 나는 아버지를 알았사옵고 그들도 아버지께서 나를 보내신 줄 알았사옵나이다

17:26 내가 아버지의 이름을 그들에게 알게 하였고 또 알게 하리니 이는 나를 사랑하신 사랑이 그들 안에 있고 나도 그들 안에 있게 하려 함이니이다

25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26 I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”

오늘 본문은 고별설교 후 이어진 예수님 기도의 마지막 부분입니다.

그런데 예수님의 중보기도는 오직 제자들만을 위한 것이 아니었습니다.

예수님은 그들의 말로 말미암아 나를 믿는 사람들도 위함이니(20b)라고 밝히십니다. 

그러니까 이후로 제자들의 복음전도로 말미암아 예수를 믿게 되는 모든 자들을 위한 기도입니다. 그러니까 지금 요한복음을 읽는 우리들을 위한 예수님의 기도인 것입니다.

얼마나 감동이 되는 기도입니까? 예수님은 세상이 아버지께서 예수를 보내신 것, 곧 복음을 믿게 해달라고 기도하십니다. 예수님의 기도에서 ‘믿음’은 적어도 2가지 요소로 구성됩니다.

Today's passage is the final part of Jesus' prayer following His farewell sermon.

However, Jesus' intercessory prayer was not only for His disciples.

Jesus states, "for those who will believe in me through their message" (v. 20b).

In other words, this prayer is for all who will come to believe in Jesus through the disciples' preaching of the gospel. This means that Jesus' prayer is also for us who are now reading the Gospel of John.

How moving is this prayer! Jesus prays that the world may believe that the Father has sent Him—that they may come to faith in the gospel. In Jesus' prayer, 'faith' consists of at least two elements.

첫번째는 연합입니다(20~24절).

아버지는 아들에게 영광을 주셨습니다. 그 영광은 사명 자체임과 동시에 그 사명을 감당한 결과 누리게 될 결과로서 영광입니다. 이에 대해서 바울은 다음과 같이 말했습니다.

이러므로 하나님이 그를 지극히 높여 모든 이름 위에 뛰어난 이름을 주사

하늘에 있는 자들과 땅에 있는 자들과 땅 아래에 있는 자들로 모든 무릎을 예수의 이름에 꿇게 하시고

모든 입으로 예수 그리스도를 주라 시인하여 하나님 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하셨느니라

(빌 2:9~11)

그런데 예수님은 그 영광을 제자들에게 나누십니다. 그 영광은 예수님의 사명을 이어서 땅 끝까지 복음을 전하는 것과 그 말씀과 명령에 대한 순종의 결과 영원한 천국에서 예수님과 함께 아버지의 영광에 참예하게 되는 것을 의미합니다. 그리스도와 함께 영원히 왕 노릇 하는 것입니다.

그 영광을 주신 이유와 그 영광을 이루기 위해 필요한 것이 바로 하나됨, 곧 연합입니다(21).

그런 점에서 연합은 목적이자, 동시에 목적을 이루는 방법입니다.

하지만 이 연합은 오직 하나님, 예수님 안에서의 연합을 의미합니다. 연합하는 것이 목적이지만, 이것이 세상에 존재하는 모든 연합이 하나님을 위한 연합이라는 것을 의미하는 것은 아닙니다.

The first element is Unity (verses 20–24).

The Father has given glory to the Son. This glory is both the mission itself and the result of fulfilling that mission. Paul speaks of this in the following way:

Jesus shares this glory with His disciples. This glory signifies continuing Jesus' mission by spreading the gospel to the ends of the earth and, as a result of obedience to His word and commands, partaking in the Father’s glory with Jesus in the eternal kingdom. It means reigning forever with Christ.

The reason for granting this glory and what is necessary to fulfill it is unity (v. 21).

In this sense, unity is both the goal and the means to achieving that goal.

However, this unity refers exclusively to being united in God and in Jesus. While unity is the goal, this does not mean that all forms of unity in the world are for God.

쉽게 표현하면 도둑질을 위해 연합하는 것은 주님이 원하시는 연합이 아니라는 의미입니다.

성부와 성자와 그리고 성령이 하나됨, 곧 연합으로 존재하시고, 사역하십니다. 그 연합을 본받아야 합니다. 성도는 그 삼위일체의 비밀 가운데 참예함으로 삼위일체 하나님과 또한 성도들 간에 온전히 하나됨을 경험할 수 있습니다. 그렇게 예수 안에서 하나됨을 경험할 때, 비로소 세상은 하나님의 살아 계심, 또한 예수가 그리스도이심과 성도들이 그의 자녀 됨(사랑하심)을 알게 되는 것입니다.

어느 때나 하나님을 본 사람이 없으되 만일 우리가 서로 사랑하면

하나님이 우리 안에 거하시고 그의 사랑이 우리 안에 온전히 이루어지느니라 (요일 4:12)

그런 점에서 예수님은 고리입니다. 아버지와 우리를 연결하는 고리, 하나님과 세상을 연결하는 고리입니다. 영원히 만날 수 없는 우리와 하나님을 예수 안에서 영원히 연결하신 것입니다.

이제 예수님은 제자들이 마지막 날에는 천국에 함께 하며 아버지가 아들에게 주신 영광을 보게 하시기를 간구합니다(24).

이것은 비록 제자들이 지금은 따라올 수 없지만, 결국에는 그들이 예수님을 따라 순교하여 천국에서 재회할 것에 대한 소망의 기도입니다. 예수님은 종말론적인 소망을 담고 기도하십니다. 천국에서 제자들이, 성도들이 창조주 예수 그리스도와 구속주 예수 그리스도의 영광을 보기를…

Simply put, uniting for the purpose of stealing is not the kind of unity the Lord desires.

The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit exist and work in perfect unity. We must follow this model of unity. Believers, by partaking in the mystery of the Trinity, can fully experience unity with the Triune God and with one another. When we truly experience this unity in Jesus, the world will come to know that God is alive, that Jesus is the Christ, and that believers are His beloved children.

In this sense, Jesus is the link—the link that connects the Father and us, the link that connects God and the world. Jesus eternally unites us, who could never reach God on our own, with Him.

Now, Jesus prays that His disciples will be with Him in heaven on the last day and see the glory that the Father has given Him (v. 24).

Though the disciples cannot follow Him now, they will ultimately follow Him in martyrdom and reunite with Him in heaven. This is a prayer of hope—a hope for the end times. Jesus prays with eschatological hope, desiring that His disciples and all believers will see the glory of Jesus Christ, the Creator and Redeemer, in heaven.

앎 (25~26절)

예수님은 3절에서 다음과 같이 말씀 하셨습니다.

영생은 곧 유일하신 참 하나님과 그가 보내신 자 예수 그리스도를 아는 것이니이다 (요 17:3)

믿음의 중요한 또 다른 요소는 앎입니다. 요한은 형용사 의로우신(디카이오스)을 오직 하나님께만 사용합니다. 왜냐하면 이것은 하나님의 속성(성품)이기 때문입니다.

세상은 바로 이렇게 의로우신 하나님을 알지 못합니다. 그러므로 그가 예수를 보낸 사실도 모릅니다.

세상은 하나님과 예수를 몰라서 영생하지 못하고 죽을 수밖에 없습니다. 모르기에 망하는 것입니다.

앎이 없어서 망하는 사실에 대해서 호세아 선지자가 이미 말했습니다.

이스라엘 자손들아 여호와의 말씀을 들으라 여호와께서 이 땅 주민과 논쟁하시나니 이 땅에는 진실도 없고 인애도 없고 하나님을 아는 지식도 없고... 내 백성이 지식이 없으므로 망하는도다 (호 4:1; 6a)

바울은 하나님을 아는 일에 대해서 다음과 같이 강조했습니다.

우리가 다 하나님의 아들을 믿는 것과 아는 일에 하나가 되어… (엡 4:13a)

놀고먹는 일에 하나가 되는 것이 아닙니다. 인간적인 친교를 위한 하나됨도 아닙니다. 하나님의 아들을 믿는 것과 아는 일에 하나가 되어야 합니다. 그래서 말씀을 공부해야 합니다. 예수를 배워야 합니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 이것을 알게 하셨고, 또한 제자들을 통하여 사람들에게 이것을 알게 하실 것입니다.

진리의 영이신 또 다른 보혜사 성령을 통하여 그 일을 계속 하실 것이고, 지금도 하고 계십니다.

그렇게 하시는 이유는 사랑 때문입니다.

예수님은 하나님 아버지의 사랑이 우리 안에, 또한 예수께서 우리 안에 거하시기를 원하십니다.

예수께서 우리 안에 거하시는 방법은 연합과 앎입니다. 예수를 알고, 예수와 연합하는 제자가 됩시다. 

Knowing (Verses 25–26)

In verse 3, Jesus says:

Another crucial element of faith is knowledge. John exclusively uses the adjective "righteous" (dikaios) to describe God, as it is an essential attribute of His character.

The world does not know this righteous God; therefore, it also does not recognize that He sent Jesus.

Because the world does not know God and Jesus, it cannot have eternal life and is destined for destruction. It perishes due to a lack of knowledge.

The prophet Hosea already spoke of this truth:

Paul also emphasizes the importance of knowing God:

Unity is not about indulging in leisure or merely fostering human relationships. Rather, we must be united in faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God. This is why we must study the Word and learn about Jesus.

Jesus revealed this knowledge to His disciples, and through them, He will continue to make it known to others.

This work will continue through the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, and it is still happening today.

The reason behind all of this is love.

Jesus desires that the Father's love dwells in us and that He Himself abides in us.

The way Jesus abides in us is through unity and knowledge.

Let us strive to know Jesus and be His disciples by uniting with Him.
