14:1 너희는 마음에 근심하지 말라 하나님을 믿으니 또 나를 믿으라

14:2 내 아버지 집에 거할 곳이 많도다 그렇지 않으면 너희에게 일렀으리라 내가 너희를 위하여 거처를 예비하러 가노니

14:3 가서 너희를 위하여 거처를 예비하면 내가 다시 와서 너희를 내게로 영접하여 나 있는 곳에 너희도 있게 하리라

14:4 내가 어디로 가는지 그 길을 너희가 아느니라

1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”

14:5 도마가 이르되 주여 어디로 가시는지 우리가 알지 못하거늘 그 길을 어찌 알겠사옵나이까

5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

14:6 예수께서 이르시되 내가 곧 길이요 진리요 생명이니 나로 말미암지 않고는 아버지께로 올 자가 없느니라

14:7 너희가 나를 알았더라면 내 아버지도 알았으리로다 이제부터는 너희가 그를 알았고 또 보았느니라

6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

14:8 빌립이 이르되 주여 아버지를 우리에게 보여 주옵소서 그리하면 족하겠나이다

8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

14:9 예수께서 이르시되 빌립아 내가 이렇게 오래 너희와 함께 있으되 네가 나를 알지 못하느냐 나를 본 자는 아버지를 보았거늘 어찌하여 아버지를 보이라 하느냐

14:10 나는 아버지 안에 거하고 아버지는 내 안에 계신 것을 네가 믿지 아니하느냐 내가 너희에게 이르는 말은 스스로 하는 것이 아니라 아버지께서 내 안에 계셔서 그의 일을 하시는 것이라

14:11 내가 아버지 안에 거하고 아버지께서 내 안에 계심을 믿으라 그렇지 못하겠거든 행하는 그 일로 말미암아 나를 믿으라

14:12 내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 나를 믿는 자는 내가 하는 일을 그도 할 것이요 또한 그보다 큰 일도 하리니 이는 내가 아버지께로 감이라

14:13 너희가 내 이름으로 무엇을 구하든지 내가 행하리니 이는 아버지로 하여금 아들로 말미암아 영광을 받으시게 하려 함이라

14:14 내 이름으로 무엇이든지 내게 구하면 내가 행하리라

9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

                  예수님께서 제자들을 떠나신다고 말씀하시자 제자들의 마음은 심란해집니다. 거기에 베드로의 호기로운 다짐에도 예수님께서는 그가 닭 울기 전에 세번 씩이나 예수님을 부인하리라고 말씀하셨습니다. 이 말씀에 제자들은 더욱 혼란스럽습니다. 예수님이 우리를 떠나시면 우리는 어떻게 되는 것인가? 게다가 베드로에게 하시는 말씀을 보니 우리는 예수님이 가시는 곳에 따라갈 수도 없는 것 같은데 우리는 어떻게 해야하나? 그들의 마음이 갑자기 불안해지며 근심에 빠집니다. 그런 제자들에게 오늘 예수님께서는 네가지 말씀을 하십니다. 첫째는 근심하지 말라. 둘째는 너희가 이미 길을 알고 있다 그 길이 바로 나다. 셋째는 나와 아버지가 하나임을 믿으라. 넷째는 내가 하는 일을 너희가 하게 될 것이다. 입니다. 하나씩 살펴보겠습니다.

When Jesus told His disciples that He would leave them, their hearts became troubled. Even after Peter's bold commitment, Jesus said that Peter would deny Him three times before the rooster crowed. This statement confused the disciples even more. "What will happen to us if Jesus leaves? And from what He's saying to Peter, it seems we cannot follow Him where He's going—so what should we do?" Their hearts suddenly became anxious and fell into worry.

                  첫째는 근심하지 말라고 말씀하십니다. 예수님이 떠나신다는 말에 제자들은 심히 근심이 되었습니다. 그런 그들에게 예수님께서는 1절의 말씀 “너희는 마음에 근심하지 말라 하나님을 믿으니 또 나를 믿으라”고 말씀하십니다. 이들의 마음의 근심에 대한 해결책이 바로 예수님을 믿는 것이라고 하십니다. 저는 이번 주의 말씀들을 보면서 예수님과 제자들의 대화가 마치 부모 자식간의 대화와 너무 비슷한 것 같다라는 느낌을 받습니다. 마치 어린 아이가 부모님이 눈 앞에서 사라지면 분리불안이 오는 것처럼 제자들 또한 그렇게 불안해 하는 것이지요. 그러나 어린 아이라 할지라도 부모와 애착관계가 잘 형성되어 있으면 부모가 눈 앞에 없더라도 그렇게 불안해 하지 않습니다. 부모가 시야에 보이지 않더라도 자신이 필요할 때에 나타날 것이라는 믿음이 있기 때문입니다. 마찬가지인 것 같습니다. 예수님께서 이들이 겪고 있는 분리 불안에 대한 해결책으로 말씀하신 것이 나를 믿으라 입니다. 그리고 2-4절까지 예수님이 어디로 가시는지 무엇을 위해 가시는지 또 언제 그들을 데리고 가실지 다 말씀해주시고 그 가는 길 또한 알려주십니다. 마치 어린 아이에게 아빠가 지금 슈퍼에 가서 너 좋아하는 아이스크림 먼저 사고 있을 테니 시간되면 나와라 라고 말하는 것 같지요. 2절에 “내 아버지 집에 거할 곳이 많도다” 어디로 가시는지 알려주십니다. “내가 너희를 위하여 거처를 예비하러 가노니” 가시는 목적 또한 알려주십니다. 3절 “너희를 위하여 거처를 예비하면… 나 있는 곳에 너희도 있게 하리라” 이들이 예수님과 영영 떨어지는 것이 아닌 때가 되면 이들도 예수님 있는 곳으로 올 것이라는 약속을 하십니다. 그리고 4절 “내가 어디로 가는지 그 길을 너희가 아느니라” 이들에게 어떻게 올 수 있는지 길도 알려주십니다. 그들이 이미 아는 길이라고 하십니다. 이들은 예수님이 떠나신다는 그 사실 하나 때문에 이렇게 근심하고 불안했지만 예수님께서는 마치 아이가 부모를 믿듯이 자신을 믿으라고 말씀하시는 것입니다.

To these disciples, Jesus gives four messages today. First, do not be troubled. Second, you already know the way, and that way is Me. Third, believe that the Father and I are one. Fourth, you will do the works that I do. Let's examine each one.

First, Jesus says, "Do not let your hearts be troubled." The disciples were deeply concerned about Jesus leaving them. To them, Jesus says in verse 1, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me." Jesus tells them that the solution to their troubled hearts is simply believing in Him.

As I look at this week's scripture, I feel that the conversation between Jesus and His disciples is very similar to one between parents and children. Just as a young child experiences separation anxiety when parents disappear from sight, the disciples felt the same anxiety. However, even a young child who has formed a secure attachment with their parents doesn't become anxious when the parents are out of sight, because they believe their parents will appear when needed.

It seems similar here. Jesus offers "believe in me" as the solution to their separation anxiety. In verses 2-4, Jesus explains where He's going, why He's going there, and when He will take them with Him. He even tells them the way. It's like a father telling his child, "I'm going to the store to buy your favorite ice cream first, so come out when you have time."

In verse 2, Jesus says, "My Father's house has many rooms," revealing where He's going. "I am going there to prepare a place for you," showing His purpose. Verse 3 continues, "And if I go and prepare a place for you... I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am." This is a promise that they won't be separated from Jesus forever—when the time comes, they will join Him. Then in verse 4, "You know the way to the place where I am going." He even tells them how to get there, saying they already know the way.

Though the disciples were anxious and troubled simply because Jesus was leaving, Jesus tells them to believe in Him just as a child believes in their parents.

                  이렇게 이들의 불안에 대한 대책으로 당신을 믿으라, “너희가 내가 가는 곳의 길을 알고 있다”고 말씀하시는 예수님에게 도마가 질문합니다. 5절입니다. “주여 주께서 어디로 가시는지 우리가 알지 못하거늘 그 길을 어찌 알겠사옵나이까?” 베드로와 마찬가지로 도마 또한 예수님을 따르는데 진심인 사람이었습니다. 예수님께서 나사로를 일으키시려 베다니로 가실 때에 “우리도 주와 함께 죽으러 가자” (11:16) 라고 제자들에게 말했던 사람이 도마입니다. 아마 베드로가 “주를 위하여 내 목숨을 버리겠나이다”라고 말을 할 때에 도마는 ‘아 저 말을 내가 먼저 할 껄!’ 이라고 속으로 생각했을지도 모릅니다. 그런데 베드로가 예수님의 말씀을 제대로 이해하지 못했듯이 도마도 예수님의 말씀을 이해하지 못합니다. 그러자 예수님께서 그 길이 정확히 무엇인지 도마에게 말씀하십니다. 6절입니다. “예수께서 이르시되 내가 곧 길이요 진리요 생명이니 나로 말미암지 않고는 아버지께로 올자가 없느니라” 바로 내가 길이다 라고 말씀하시지요. 너희가 이미 아는 길. 그 길이 나다라고 말씀하고 계시는 것입니다. 그 길이 어디로 통하는 길입니까? 아버지께로, 하나님께로 통하는 길이지요. 그래서 예수님은 7절에 “너희가 나를 알았더라면 내 아버지도 알았으리로다” 라고 말씀하시지요. 예수님을 안다면 예수님을 통하여 하나님 또한 알게 되는 것입니다.

After Jesus offers belief in Him as the solution to their anxiety and says, "You know the way to where I am going," Thomas questions Him in verse 5: "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?" Like Peter, Thomas was sincere in following Jesus. When Jesus went to Bethany to raise Lazarus, it was Thomas who said to the disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with him" (11:16). Perhaps when Peter said, "I will lay down my life for you" (13:37), Thomas might have thought, "I should have said that first!"

But just as Peter didn't properly understand Jesus' words, neither did Thomas. So Jesus tells Thomas exactly what that way is in verse 6: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Jesus Himself is the way. The way they already know—that way is Jesus. And where does this way lead? To the Father, to God. That's why Jesus says in verse 7, "If you really know me, you will know my Father as well." If you know Jesus, you will also know God through Him.

                  그런데 이번에는 빌립이 예수님께 요청합니다. “주여 아버지를 우리에게 보여 주옵소서 그리하면 족하겠나이다.” 아니 방금까지 예수님을 알았다면 아버지 또한 알았으리라고 분명히 말씀하셨는데 빌립마저 이런 요청을 하는 것을 보면 아마 모든 제자들이 예수님께서 무슨 말씀을 하시는지 전혀 이해하지 못했던 것 같습니다. 오죽하면 예수님께서 섭섭함을 드러내시지요 9절입니다. “내가 이렇게 오래 너희와 함께 있으되 네가 나를 알지 못하느냐” 그리고 이제 대놓고 말씀하십니다. 10절입니다. “내가 아버지 안에 거하고 아버지는 내 안에 계신 것을 네가 믿지 아니하느냐?” 그리고 이제는 그가 이미 알고 있을 것이라, 믿고 있을 것이다라는 생각을 내려놓으시고 아예 믿으라고 하십니다. 11절입니다. “내가 아버지 안에 거하고 아버지께서 내 안에 계심을 믿으라” 이들에게 예수님께서 하나님 안에 계시고 하나님이 예수님 안에 계신 것은 너무나 중요한 가르침입니다. 예수님은 늘 10절 하반절 말씀처럼 “내가 너희에게 이르는 말은 스스로 하는 것이 아니라 아버지께서 내 안에 계셔서 그의 일을 하시는 것이라”라고 제자들에게 또 유대인들에게 말씀하셨었습니다. 이 말씀이 왜 중요하겠습니까? 예수님과 하나님의 관계처럼 이들 또한 예수님과 하나됨을 이루어 예수님의 일을 이 땅에 이루어야 하기 때문입니다. 

But then Philip requests, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us." Jesus had just clearly said if they knew Him, they would know the Father, yet Philip still made this request. It seems all the disciples completely failed to understand what Jesus was saying. Jesus expresses His disappointment in verse 9: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time?" Then He states plainly in verse 10: "Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me?" And now, letting go of the assumption that Philip already believes this, Jesus directly commands in verse 11: "Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me."

This teaching—that Jesus is in God and God is in Jesus—is crucial for the disciples. Jesus always told His disciples and the Jews, as in the latter part of verse 10, "The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work." Why is this important? Because just as Jesus and God have this relationship, these disciples must also become one with Jesus to continue His work on earth.

                  이것이 오늘 말씀 안에 예수님의 마지막 가르침입니다. 12절입니다. “나를 믿는 자는 내가 하는 일을 그도 할 것이요 또한 그보다 큰 일도 하리니 이는 내가 아버지께로 감이라.” 이것이 예수님의 결론입니다. 나는 아버지께로 가지만. 그래서 너희를 떠나지만, 너희가 나를 믿으면 그러면 너희는 내가 아버지 안에 또 아버지가 내 안에 계신 것처럼 너희도 내 안에 나도 너희 안에 거하게되어 내가 하는 일을 하게 될 것이다. 아니 그보다 더 큰 일을 하게 될 것이다. 그러니 근심하지 말라. 는 말씀아니겠습니까? 13절에 “내 이름으로 무엇을 구하든지 내가 행하리니” 이 말씀은 14절에도 거의 그대로 다시 반복해서 말씀하십니다. 그런데 한가지 조건이 있지요. 13절 하반절입니다. “이는 아버지로 하여금 아들로 말미암아 영광을 받으시게 하려 함이라” 바로 예수님께서 우리 안에 계실 때에 우리가 예수님의 일을 하는 것이 우리 안의 예수님을 통하여 하나님께서 영광을 받으신 다는 것입니다. 그러므로 우리가 예수님의 이름으로 무엇이든 구한다는 것은 바로 예수님께서 하나님의 영광을 위하여 구하시듯이 우리도 그렇게 구하여야 한다는 뜻입니다.

This is Jesus' final teaching in today's passage. Verse 12 says, "Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father." This is Jesus' conclusion: "I am going to the Father. So I am leaving you, but if you believe in me, then just as I am in the Father and the Father is in me, you will be in me and I in you, and you will do the works I do. In fact, you will do even greater works. So do not be troubled."

Verse 13 states, "And I will do whatever you ask in my name," which Jesus repeats almost verbatim in verse 14. But there is one condition in the latter part of verse 13: "so that the Father may be glorified in the Son." When Jesus is in us and we do His work, God receives glory through Jesus in us. Therefore, asking in Jesus' name means that we should ask as Jesus would ask—for God's glory.

                  말씀을 맺습니다. 제자들을 떠나시기 전에 예수님께서는 근심하는 제자들에게 근심하지 말고 당신을 믿으라고 말씀하십니다. 그들을 위로하시고 그들에게 길을 알려주십니다. 그 길은 바로 예수님 당신이셨습니다. 그러면서 예수님은 당신과 하나님이 어떻게 하나 됨을 이루시는지를 다시 상기시키십니다. 그리고 이들 또한 예수님과 이렇게 하나되야 함을 말씀하십니다. 예수님을 믿음으로 예수님과 하나되어 예수님의 일을 하는 것. 바로 그것이 예수님께서 근심하는 제자들에게 또 우리에게 명하시는 일인 것입니다.

To conclude: Before leaving His disciples, Jesus tells them not to be troubled but to believe in Him. He comforts them and shows them the way—which was Jesus Himself. He reminds them how He and the Father are one, and tells them they must also become one with Him in the same way. Believing in Jesus, becoming one with Him, and doing His works—this is what Jesus commands His troubled disciples and us to do.
