20 Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival. 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.

12:23 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 인자가 영광을 얻을 때가 왔도다

12:24 내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 한 알의 밀이 땅에 떨어져 죽지 아니하면 한 알 그대로 있고 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺느니라

12:25 자기의 생명을 사랑하는 자는 잃어버릴 것이요 이 세상에서 자기의 생명을 미워하는 자는 영생하도록 보전하리라

12:26 사람이 나를 섬기려면 나를 따르라 나 있는 곳에 나를 섬기는 자도 거기 있으리니 사람이 나를 섬기면 내 아버지께서 그를 귀히 여기시리라

23 Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.

12:27 지금 내 마음이 괴로우니 무슨 말을 하리요 아버지여 나를 구원하여 이 때를 면하게 하여 주옵소서 그러나 내가 이를 위하여 이 때에 왔나이다

12:28 아버지여, 아버지의 이름을 영광스럽게 하옵소서 하시니 이에 하늘에서 소리가 나서 이르되 내가 이미 영광스럽게 하였고 또 다시 영광스럽게 하리라 하시니

12:29 곁에 서서 들은 무리는 천둥이 울었다고도 하며 또 어떤 이들은 천사가 그에게 말하였다고도 하니

27 “Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name!”

Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.

12:30 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 이 소리가 난 것은 나를 위한 것이 아니요 너희를 위한 것이니라

12:31 이제 이 세상에 대한 심판이 이르렀으니 이 세상의 임금이 쫓겨나리라

12:32 내가 땅에서 들리면 모든 사람을 내게로 이끌겠노라 하시니

12:33 이렇게 말씀하심은 자기가 어떠한 죽음으로 죽을 것을 보이심이러라

30 Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine. 31 Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” 33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.

12:34 이에 무리가 대답하되 우리는 율법에서 그리스도가 영원히 계신다 함을 들었거늘 너는 어찌하여 인자가 들려야 하리라 하느냐 이 인자는 누구냐

34 The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law that the Messiah will remain forever, so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”

12:35 예수께서 이르시되 아직 잠시 동안 빛이 너희 중에 있으니 빛이 있을 동안에 다녀 어둠에 붙잡히지 않게 하라 어둠에 다니는 자는 그 가는 곳을 알지 못하느니라

12:36 너희에게 아직 빛이 있을 동안에 빛을 믿으라 그리하면 빛의 아들이 되리라 예수께서 이 말씀을 하시고 그들을 떠나가서 숨으시니라

35 Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. 36 Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.” When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.

                  예수님께서 갈릴리 가나에서 첫 표적을 보이실 때 이런 말씀을 하시지요. 2:4입니다. “여자여 나와 무슨 상관이 있나이까 내 때가 아직 이르지 아니하였나이다.” 요한복음에서는 이 예수님의 때라는 말이 꽤나 여러번 반복해서 나옵니다. 그러나 그 때마다 예수님께서는 내 때가 아직 이르지 않았다라는 말씀을 하시지요. 심지어는 예수님만이 그런 말씀을 하시는 것이 아니라고 합니다. 사람들이 예수님을 잡고자 하여도 그 일이 이루어지지 않는다고 합니다. 이것은 예수님의 때가 아직 이르지 않았기 때문이라고 요한은 적고 있지요. 즉 예수님만이 아니라 하나님의 주권 또한 이 때를 주관하고 계시다는 말씀이지요. 7:30입니다. “그들이 예수를 잡고자 하나 손을 대는 자가 없으니 이는 그의 때가 아직 이르지 아니하였음이러라.” 그렇다면 예수님의 때라는 것은 과연 무엇이기에 예수님께서도 이 때를 의식하시면서 사역을 행하시고 하나님께서도 이 때를 세밀히 주관하시는 것일까요? 그렇습니다. 예수님께서 말씀하시는 예수님의 때는 바로 예수님께서 십자가에 달려 돌아가시는 때 입니다. 그리고 그 때에 우리를 대속하시는 예수님의 죽음이 하나님의 구원의 역사를 완성하시는 때인것입니다. 그리고 오늘 말씀에서 드디어 예수님께서 “인자가 영광을 얻을 때가 왔도다”라는 말씀을 하십니다. 오늘은 이 인자가 영광을 얻을 때란 무엇인지 함께 말씀 나누기를 원합니다.

When Jesus showed His first sign in Cana of Galilee, He said these words. In John 2:4, "Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come." In the Gospel of John, this phrase about Jesus' "hour" appears quite frequently. However, each time, Jesus says that His hour has not yet come. It's noted that not only does Jesus say these words, but even when people try to seize Him, they cannot succeed. John writes that this was because Jesus' hour had not yet come. This means that not only Jesus but also God's sovereignty was controlling this timing. As we see in John 7:30, "They tried to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come."

So what exactly is this "hour" of Jesus that He was so conscious of during His ministry, and that God was controlling so precisely? Indeed, the hour Jesus speaks of is the time when He would be crucified. It is the time when His death would complete God's work of salvation through His atonement for us. And in today's passage, Jesus finally declares, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified." Today, we will explore together what this means - this hour when the Son of Man is glorified.

                  인자가 영광을 얻을 때란 무엇인가? 그 첫번째는 많은 사람을 위하여 자신의 생명을 희생하시는 때입니다. 오늘 말씀의 시작은 명절에 예루살렘에 예배를 드리러 온 헬라인, 즉 이방인들이 예수님을 찾아오면서 시작합니다. 이들은 비 유대인들로서 이방인 중에서도 유대교에 이끌려 하나님을 예배하는 사람들이었죠. 21절을 보니 이들이 빌립에게 가서 예수님을 뵙고자 합니다. 왜 굳이 빌립에게 갔을까? 그것은 빌립의 이름 자체가 헬라어 이름이었기 때문입니다. ‘말을 사랑하는 자’라는 뜻이지요. 이들이 빌립을 통해 예수님의 가르침을 얻고자 하니 예수님께서 그들에게 대답하여 말씀하시는 것이 바로 23절 “인자가 영광을 얻을 때가 왔도다”라는 말씀입니다. 이렇게 이방인들의 방문에 맞춰서 십자가 영광을 말씀하신 것은 결코 우연이 아니지요. 왜냐하면 예수님께서는 유대인들과 이방인 모두를 위해 당신의 생명을 희생하실 것이기 때문입니다. 그래서 11:52에서는 “또 그 민족만 위할 뿐 아니라 흩어진 하나님의 자녀를 모아 하나가 되게 하기 위하여 죽으실 것을 미리 말함이러라”라고 하지 않습니까? 이 말씀 그대로 예수님께서는 오늘 말씀 24절에 한 알의 밀알이 땅에 떨어져 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺는다고 하셨습니다. 예수님께서 자신의 생명을 희생하는 것이 많은 열매를 맺기 위함이라는 것입니다. 25절도 마찬가지입니다. 자기의 생명을 미워하는 자는 영생하도록 보전하리라. 예수님께서 자신의 생명을 내려놓으심으로 많은 사람들에게 영생을 주시는 것 바로 이것이 인자가 영광을 얻는 때 인것입니다.

What is the hour when the Son of Man is glorified? First, it is the time when He sacrifices His life for many. Today's passage begins with Greeks, that is, Gentiles, who came to worship at the festival in Jerusalem, seeking Jesus. These were non-Jews who were drawn to Judaism and came to worship God. In verse 21, we see them approaching Philip to see Jesus. Why Philip specifically? It was because Philip had a Greek name, meaning "lover of horses." When these people sought Jesus' teaching through Philip, Jesus responds in verse 23, saying "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified." It was no coincidence that Jesus spoke about the glory of the cross in response to these Gentiles' visit. This was because Jesus would sacrifice His life for both Jews and Gentiles. Isn't this why John 11:52 says, "and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one"? Just as this Scripture says, in verse 24 of today's passage, Jesus speaks about a kernel of wheat falling to the ground and dying to produce many seeds. He is saying that His life's sacrifice is meant to bear much fruit. Verse 25 says the same: whoever hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. This is the hour of the Son of Man's glorification - when Jesus lays down His life to give eternal life to many.

                  인자가 영광을 얻는 때란 무엇인가? 그 두번째는 하나님의 영광이 드러나는 때입니다. 비록 인자가 영광을 얻는 때이지만 예수님께서는 그 과정이 어떠한 것인지를 이미 다 알고 계셨습니다. 예수님께서는 또한 완전한 인간이셨기에 그 마음이 편하실리 없습니다. 마태복음 26:38에 보니 제자들에게 함께 깨어 기도하라고 말씀하시며 “내 마음이 매우 고민하여 죽게 되었으니 너희는 여기 머물러 나와 함께 깨어있으라”라고 하셨습니다. 그리고 누가복음 22:44은 예수님께서 잡히시기전에 “힘쓰고 애써 더욱 간절히 기도하시니 땀이 땅에 떨어지는 핏방울 같이 되더라”라는 말씀을 합니다. 오늘 말씀 27절도 같은 말씀을 하고 있습니다. “지금 내 마음이 괴로우니 무슨 말을 하리요” 그러나 예수님은 그럼에도 불구하고 하나님이 계획하신 일과 그 때를 위하여 자신을 쳐서 복종하심으로 하나님의 영광을 드러내시는 것입니다. 27절 하반절과 28절입니다. “그러나 내가 이를 위하여 이때에 왔나이다 아버지여 아버지의 이름을 영광스럽게 하옵소서” 인자가 영광을 얻는 때란 예수님께서 하나님께 순종하심으로 예수님을 보내신 하나님의 뜻을 이루시는 하나님의 영광이 드러나는 때인 것입니다.

What is the hour when the Son of Man is glorified? Second, it is the time when God's glory is revealed. Although it was the hour for the Son of Man to be glorified, Jesus fully knew what this process would entail. Being fully human, He could not be at ease. In Matthew 26:38, He tells His disciples to stay and keep watch with Him, saying, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me." And Luke 22:44 tells us that before His arrest, "And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground." Verse 27 of today's passage says the same: "Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say?" Yet despite this, Jesus submits Himself to God's planned time and purpose, revealing God's glory through His obedience. As we see in verses 27b-28: "Yet what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!" The hour when the Son of Man is glorified is when Jesus reveals God's glory by submitting to God's will through His obedience.

                  인자가 영광을 얻는 때란 무엇인가? 그 세번째는 이 세상에 대한 심판과 모든 사람을 이끄시는 구원이 임하는 때입니다. 31절 말씀에 “이 세상에 대한 심판이 이르렀으니 이 세상의 임금이 쫓겨나리라” 라고 하십니다. 예수님께서 땅에서 들려 십자가에서 죽으심이 어떻게 이 세상에 대한 심판이 되고 이 세상의 임금이 쫓겨난다는 것일까요? 첫번째 아담은 하나님께서 명령하신 나무에 불순종함으로 하나님께서 주신 이 세상의 통치권을 죄와 사망에게 넘겨준 것입니다. 그래서 이 세상은 죄와 사망이 임금이 되어 대적의 통치아래 그 누구도 죽음을 벗어날 수 없게 된 것입니다. 그러나 두번째 아담이신 예수님께서는 하나님께서 명령하신 나무에 순종하셨습니다. 그래서 그 나무에 들려 죽으심으로 모든사람에게 영생을 주신것입니다. 이 세상의 임금노릇을 하던 죄와 죽음이 예수님의 십자가로 말미암아 심판받고 그 자리에서 쫓겨나게 된 것입니다. 그리고 우리가 예수님을 믿을 때에 태초에 하나님께서 우리에게 주셨던 이 세상의 통치권이 다시 회복되는 것입니다. 로마서 5:17이 이것을 말하고 있습니다. “한 사람의 범죄로 말미암아 사망이 그 한 사람을 통하여 왕 노릇 하였은즉 더욱 은혜와 의의 선물을 넘치게 받는 자들은 한 분 예수 그리스도를 통하여 생명 안에서 왕 노릇 하리로다” 아멘 예수 그리스도를 통하여. 오늘 말씀 32절처럼 예수님께서 땅에서 들리면 모든 사람을 예수님께로 이끄시는 것입니다. 부활이요 생명이신 예수님께로 이끄시는 것입니다. 그것이 인자가 영광을 얻는 때인 것입니다.

What is the hour when the Son of Man is glorified? Third, it is the time when judgment comes upon this world and salvation draws all people to Him. Verse 31 says, "Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out." How does Jesus' death on the cross bring judgment on this world and drive out its prince? The first Adam surrendered the God-given dominion over this world to sin and death through his disobedience to God's command about the tree. Thus, this world came under the rule of sin and death, with no one able to escape death under the enemy's dominion. However, Jesus, the second Adam, obeyed God's command concerning the tree. By being lifted up on it and dying, He gave eternal life to all people. Sin and death, which had ruled this world, were judged through Jesus' cross and driven from their position. And when we believe in Jesus, the dominion over this world that God gave us in the beginning is restored. Romans 5:17 speaks to this: "For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!" Amen, through Jesus Christ. As verse 32 of today's passage says, when Jesus is lifted up from the earth, He will draw all people to Himself. He draws them to Jesus, who is the resurrection and the life. This is the hour when the Son of Man is glorified.

                  말씀을 맺습니다. 오늘 우리는 인자가 영광을 얻는 때란 무엇인가에 대해 함께 이야기 했습니다. 첫째는 예수님께서 많은 사람을 위하여 자신의 생명을 희생하시는 때입니다. 둘째는 인자되신 예수님께서 하나님께 온전히 순종하심으로 하나님의 영광이 드러나는 때입니다. 셋쨰는 이 세상의 죄와 사망이 예수님의 구원으로 심판받는 때입니다. 또한 모든 사람을 예수님의 구원으로 이끄시는 때이기도 합니다. 우리가 예수님의 때 곧 십자가의 때를 생각할 때에 우리가 해야 할 것은 한가지입니다. 오늘 말씀은 이렇게 끝을 맺습니다. 아직 빛이 있을 동안에 빛을 믿으라 그리하면 빛의 아들이 되리라. (v. 36) 참 빛, 곧 세상에 와서 각 사람에게 비추시는 빛. 우리 예수님의 십자가의 대속을 믿으심으로 그 하나님의 영광에 참여하시는 여러분 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Let me conclude. Today, we discussed what it means for the Son of Man to be glorified. First, it is the time when Jesus sacrifices His life for many. Second, it is the time when God's glory is revealed through the complete obedience of Jesus, the Son of Man. Third, it is the time when this world's sin and death are judged through Jesus' salvation. It is also the time when He draws all people to His salvation. When we consider Jesus' hour - the hour of the cross - there is one thing we must do. Today's passage ends with these words: "Believe in the light while you still have the light, so that you may become children of light" (v. 36). The true light that gives light to everyone who comes into the world - I pray in the Lord's name that you will participate in God's glory by believing in Jesus' atoning sacrifice on the cross.
