12:12 그 이튿날에는 명절에 온 큰 무리가 예수께서 예루살렘으로 오신다는 것을 듣고

12:13 종려나무 가지를 가지고 맞으러 나가 외치되 호산나 찬송하리로다 주의 이름으로 오시는 이 곧 이스라엘의 왕이시여 하더라

12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,

“Hosanna!”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Blessed is the king of Israel!”

12:14 예수는 한 어린 나귀를 보고 타시니

14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:

12:15 이는 기록된 바 시온 딸아 두려워하지 말라 보라 너의 왕이 나귀새끼를 타고 오신다 함과 같더라

15 “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion;

    see, your king is coming,

    seated on a donkey’s colt.”

12:16 제자들은 처음에 이 일을 깨닫지 못하였다가 예수께서 영광을 얻으신 후에야 이것이 예수께 대하여 기록된 것임과 사람들이 예수께 이같이 한 것임이 생각났더라

16 At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.

12:17 나사로를 무덤에서 불러내어 죽은 자 가운데서 살리실 때에 함께 있던 무리가 증언한지라

12:18 이에 무리가 예수를 맞음은 이 표적 행하심을 들었음이러라

12:19 바리새인들이 서로 말하되 볼지어다 너희 하는 일이 쓸 데 없다 보라 온 세상이 그를 따르는도다 하니라

17 Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. 18 Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”

오늘의 말씀은 예수님의 영광스러운 승리의 예루살렘 입성을 다루고 있습니다. 목사님께서 요한복음서는 독수리가 상징 동물이라고 말씀해주셨듯이 우리에게 익숙한 다른 3개의 복음서와는 다른 전개로 풀어서 이 사건을 다루고 있습니다. 특히 16절이 눈에 띕니다. “제자들은 처음에 이 일을 깨닫지 못하였다가 예수께서 영광을 얻으신 후에야 이것이 예수께 대하여 기록된 것임과 사람들이 예수께 이같이 한 것임이 생각났더라.”

제자들이 깨닫지 못했던 예수님에 대한 기록은 스가랴서에 나와있습니다. 스가랴 9장 9절을 살펴보면 장차 오실 구세주는 다음과 같습니다. “... 보라 네 왕이 네게 임하시나니 그는 공의로우시며 구원을 베푸시며 겸손하여서 나귀를 타시나니 나귀의 작은 것 곧 나귀 새끼니라.” 장차오실 왕께서는 공의로우시며, 구원을 베푸시며, 겸손하기까지 하십니다. 제자들이 그 당시 놓쳤던 구세주 예수님을 오늘 새벽 다시 한번 살펴보기 원합니다.

Today's message focuses on Jesus' triumphant and glorious entry into Jerusalem. As the pastor has mentioned, the Gospel of John, symbolized by an eagle, presents this event differently from the three other Gospels we are more familiar with.

Notably, verse 16 stands out:"At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him."

The prophecy about Jesus, which the disciples did not initially understand, is found in the book of Zechariah. Zechariah 9:9 describes the coming Savior as follows:"See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey."

The coming King is righteous, brings salvation, and is humble. This morning, let us once again reflect on Jesus, the Savior, whom the disciples initially failed to recognize.

1)    공의

첫 번째로, 공의로우십니다. 예수님께서 예루살렘에 입성하신 유일한 목적은 하나님의 공의를 만족하시기 위함입니다. 바로 오직 십자가에서 인류의 죄를 대속하기 위해 예루살렘에 입성하시고 계십니다. 공의로우신 하나님의 법칙은 죄를 짓지 않은 누군가가 전 인류를 대신하여 죄 값을 치러야 지만 다시 죄악된 인간과 하나님이 화평해질 수 있습니다. 그런데 그럴 수 있는 존재가 예수님밖에는 없습니다.

“이 예수를 하나님이 그의 피로써 믿음으로 말미암는 화목제물로 세우셨으니 이는 하나님께서 길이 참으시는 중에 전에 지은 죄를 간과하심으로 자기의 의로우심을 나타내려 하심이니. (로마서 3:25)”

예수님이 오시기 전까지 구약 성경 시대 때에 오랜 시간동안 하나님께서는 이스라엘 백성들의 죄악을 참아오시고 기다려 주셨습니다. 이걸 이렇게 방치하면 공의로우신 하나님이 되실 수 없겠지요. 그리하여 예수님의 희생으로 단번에 모든 인류의 죄악이 사해졌습니다. 이런 예수님의 희생으로 죄사함을 받았다고 믿는 자 만이 믿음으로 의롭다함을 얻게 되는 것입니다.

1) Righteousness

First, Jesus is righteous. The sole purpose of His entry into Jerusalem was to fulfill God’s righteousness. He was entering the city to atone for the sins of humanity on the cross. According to the righteous law of God, in order for sinful humanity to be reconciled with Him, someone who is without sin must pay the price on behalf of all. The only one who could fulfill this requirement was Jesus.

"God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished." (Romans 3:25)

Before Jesus' coming, throughout the Old Testament era, God patiently endured the sins of the Israelites and waited for the appointed time. However, if sin were simply overlooked, He would not be a righteous God. Therefore, through Jesus' sacrifice, the sins of all humanity were atoned for once and for all. Only those who believe in this sacrifice receive justification through faith.

2)    구원

두 번째로, 구원을 베푸십니다. 예수님을 둘러싼 무리들은 또한 예수님께서 나사로를 죽음에서 살리셨던 표적을 본 자들입니다. 이들이 계속해서 주변에 그 표적을 증언하니 더 많은 무리들이 모입니다. 당연히 그렇겠지요. 죽은 자를 살리셨다는데 어찌 그 능력이 궁금하지 않겠습니까? 과거 아픈 자를 고치신 거에 비하면 비교도 안될 혁신적인 것 일 겁니다.

그런 예수님을 향해 무리들은 외칩니다. “호산나 찬송하리로다 주의 이름으로 오시는 이 곧 이스라엘의 왕이시여 (13).” 우리가 짐작컨데 무리 중에 물론 예수님을 구세주로 믿는 자들이 있었고 그냥 단순히 신기하고 궁금해서 모인 자들도 있었습니다. 그러나 예수님을 구세주로 믿는 자들조차 예수님이 자신들을 무엇에서 구원하러 오셨는지 잘 이해하지 못했습니다. 아마 로마 제국의 압제에서 구원해 줄 세상적인 왕으로 생각했습니다. 이들은 몰랐습니다. 이 나귀를 타신 예수님께서는 이들이 바라는 단순히 죽은 자를 살리시는 능력 뿐만이 아니라 그 죽음을 야기한 사탄의 권세를 이기시고 우리를 영원히 악에서 구원해주실 구세주이심을요.

(2) Salvation

Second, Jesus brings salvation. The crowd surrounding Jesus included those who had witnessed the miraculous sign of Him raising Lazarus from the dead. As they continued to testify about this miracle, even more people gathered around Him. Naturally, curiosity grew—after all, who wouldn’t be amazed by someone who could bring a dead man back to life? Compared to healing the sick, this was an unprecedented and revolutionary act.

The crowd cried out to Jesus:"Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the King of Israel!" (John 12:13)

Among the crowd, some truly believed in Jesus as the Savior, while others were simply intrigued by the miracle and gathered out of curiosity. However, even those who believed in Him as the Messiah did not fully understand what He had come to save them from. Many likely thought He was a worldly king who would deliver them from the oppression of the Roman Empire.

What they did not realize was that Jesus, riding on a donkey, was not just a miracle worker who could bring the dead back to life. He had come to conquer the very power that caused death—Satan himself—and to offer eternal salvation, delivering humanity from the grip of evil forever.

3)    겸손

마지막으로 나귀를 타고 들어오시는 예수님은 겸손 그 자체입니다. 요한복음에는 나와있지 않지만 예수님께서는 두 제자를 보내어 미리 아무도 생전 타지 않은 나귀 새끼를 구해놓으십니다. “주께서 쓰시겠다” 한 마디로 두 제자의 미션은 성공합니다. 스가랴의 예언에 순종하여 겸손히 나귀를 타십니다. 과연 제자들은 무슨 생각을 했을까요? 당시에는 이 일을 깨닫지 못했었다 나와있는 걸로 봐서는 ‘멋진 승용마도 아니고 모양 빠지게 고작 나귀 새끼라니. 예수님 취향 참 독특하시네’ 생각했을까 모르겠습니다.

(3) Humility

Finally, Jesus entering on a donkey is the very embodiment of humility. Although it is not mentioned in the Gospel of John, Jesus sends two disciples ahead to secure a young donkey that no one has ever ridden. With just the words, "The Lord needs it," their mission is a success. In obedience to Zechariah’s prophecy, He humbly rides the donkey.

What might the disciples have thought? Since the Bible states that they did not understand this at the time, perhaps they wondered, "Not a splendid warhorse, but just a mere donkey? Jesus sure has a unique taste."

저는 겸손과 평화를 상징하는 왕께서 우리 기독교가 믿는 주님이심이 너무 감사하고 좋습니다. 한 때 잠깐 디즈니에서 인턴으로 일했던 적이 있습니다. 그때 운이 좋게 디즈니 내에서 최고의 대우를 받는다는 “Entertainment Department”에서 일을 하게 됐는데요. 거기서 한 3-4개월 일을 하다보니까 느낀 게 ‘아 나랑 정말 안맞다’ 였습니다. 왜냐면 거기서는 경쟁이 정말 치열해요. 디즈니 가면 정해진 시간마다 하는 퍼레이드가 있는데 거기에 뽑혀서 올라가려면 계속 오디션을 봐야합니다. 그래서 오늘 친구가 내일 적군이에요. 그러다보니까 거기서 같이 일하는 사람들이 다 한 성격하는 사람들이었습니다. 막 자기가 하고 싶은 말들 필터 없이 막 내뱉고 그러는… 그런 사람들이랑 일을 하다 보니까 제가 자꾸 마음에 상처를 입고 점점 쭈그러 들더라구요. 그때 저는 저를 원망했었습니다. ‘아 나도 쟤네들 처럼 나빠지고싶다. 약육강식에서 살아남고 싶다.” 쎄보이고 싶고 강해지고 싶었습니다. 그렇게 마음 속에 뾰족 뾰족한 가시들을 키워나가고 있었던 저에게 예수님께서 찾아오셔서 알려주셨습니다. 그것은 예수님이 원하는 승리의 방식이 아님을요. 더 이상 세상의 속삭임에 흔들리지 않아도 되는 이유를 주셨습니다.

I am so grateful that the King who embodies humility and peace is the Lord whom we, as Christians, believe in.

There was a time when I briefly worked as an intern at Disney. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to work in the highly regarded Entertainment Department, which is known for offering the best benefits within the company. However, after working there for about three to four months, I realized, "this really isn't for me."

The competition there was incredibly fierce. At Disney, there are scheduled parades at set times, and to be chosen for one, you have to keep auditioning. That meant that a friend today could be a rival tomorrow. Because of this, the people working there all had very strong personalities. They would speak their minds without any filter, saying whatever they wanted. Working with those kinds of people kept hurting my feelings, and I found myself shrinking more and more.

At that time, I blamed myself. "I wish I could be like them. I want to survive in this world of survival of the fittest." I wanted to appear strong, to be tough. I began to cultivate sharp thorns in my heart, believing that was the only way to win.

But that was when Jesus came to me and showed me the truth—that this was not the kind of victory He desired. He gave me the reason why I no longer had to be swayed by the whispers of the world.

무리들은 원했을 것 입니다. 자기들을 괴롭게하는 로마제국을 단번에 제압하여 지금껏 억울하게 당했던 모든 서러움을 씻어내 줄 천하무적의 왕! 복수에 눈이 멀어서 두 팔벌려 주님을 환영하는 무리에게 주님께서 알려주십니다. ‘그건 나의 방식이 아니다.’

세상은 우리에게 말합니다. ‘강한 자만이 살아남는다.’ 아닙니다. 우리에게는 친히 하늘 권세를 내려 놓으시고 우리를 사랑하사 모든 것을 내려놓으신 겸손한 예수님께서 보여주신 모범이 있습니다. 더욱 예수님을 닮아 갑시다. 미련해보이고 호구같을지라도 괜찮습니다. 조금 더 배려하고 조금 더 사랑합시다. 나를 드러내는 대신에 나를 낮추고 주님을 드러내는 선택을 합시다.

그럴 때 정말 마지막 때에 공의의 예수님께서는 주님의 방식으로 이미 이루신 승리를 완성하실 것을 믿습니다. 예수님이 다시 오실 그 날에는 백마를 타고 하늘에서 내려와 세상에 “만왕의 왕이요 만주의 주 (계 19:16b)”라 찬송과 영광을 받으실 것임을 우리는 믿습니다. 주님을 본받아 겸손과 평화로 오늘 하루 승리하시는 여러분 되시기를 기도드립니다.

The crowds must have wanted it—an invincible King who would instantly overthrow the Roman Empire that had tormented them, washing away all their years of suffering and injustice. Blinded by their desire for revenge, they welcomed Jesus with open arms. But Jesus made it clear to them: "That is not My way."

The world tells us, "Only the strong survive." But that is not true. We have the perfect example of Jesus, who willingly laid down His heavenly authority, humbled Himself, and gave up everything out of love for us. Let us strive to be more like Him. Even if we seem foolish or naïve in the eyes of the world, that’s okay. Let’s be a little more considerate, love a little more. Instead of exalting ourselves, let us humble ourselves and lift up the name of the Lord.

When we do, we trust that in the very end, Jesus, the righteous One, will fulfill the victory He has already secured in His way. On the day of His return, He will descend from heaven riding on a white horse, and the world will proclaim Him as “King of kings and Lord of lords” (Rev. 19:16b).
