20250212 [새벽묵상] 하나님의 영광에 참여하는 자가 되라 | Be the Participants in God's Glory (요/Jhn 12:1~11)

1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. 3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, 5 “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.” 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.

7 “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. 8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”

9 Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, 11 for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.

When Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, the chief priests and Pharisees began plotting to kill Jesus from that time on. As we saw in verse 54 yesterday, Jesus had to withdraw to a town called Ephraim, where He stayed to avoid the Jews. Now, the Passover was approaching. Many people were going up to Jerusalem to purify themselves before the Passover. The religious leaders stood in the temple, waiting for Jesus to arrive. The tension was building. Would Jesus come to Jerusalem?

And now we come to today's passage. Six days before the Passover, Jesus arrived at Bethany. Bethany was only about 2 miles east of Jerusalem. In the original text, it says, "Six days before the Passover, therefore, Jesus came to Bethany." The word "therefore" shows us that Jesus intentionally moved toward the cross, knowing He would die. While the cross of Jesus signifies His death, it also represents His resurrection – His ultimate glory. It's no coincidence that verse 1 specifically mentions that Bethany was "where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead." Through Monday's meditation, we discussed how Lazarus's resurrection revealed God's glory. Now, Jesus is about to reveal an even greater, ultimate glory of God through the cross than what was shown through Lazarus's resurrection. At Bethany, where Jesus headed for this noble purpose, we encounter two people: Mary, who poured perfume on Jesus' feet and wiped them with her hair, and Judas Iscariot, who criticized her actions. Today, we'll share the Word under the title "Becoming Participants in God's Glory" through these two individuals.

Let's first look at Mary. Verse 2 tells us that when Jesus arrived in Bethany, where Lazarus whom He had raised from the dead lived, a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. As we shared on Monday, Lazarus, Martha, and Mary were the subjects of the most glorious final sign among Jesus' seven signs. Jesus revealed God's glory by raising Lazarus, solving the problem of death that no human could resolve. Lazarus himself became a living sign. Through this sign, many came to believe in Jesus. Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, who experienced this sign firsthand, must have tasted what God's glory truly meant. Those who directly experienced the joy of resurrection share that joy in a feast with Jesus, just as we will feast with Jesus in heaven after our resurrection. However, this earthly feast is merely a shadow of the heavenly banquet, just as Lazarus's resurrection was a shadow of how Jesus would resurrect. Perhaps Mary understood this through her experience. So while everyone was feasting, Mary seemed to recognize that Jesus would reveal an even greater glory of God through His death. And Mary decided to participate in that glory once again. That's why verse 3 tells us, "Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume."

Today's passage specifically mentions "expensive perfume" to show us the value of Mary's sacrifice. This extremely costly sacrifice that Mary offered to Jesus also shows how incredibly precious Jesus' sacrifice for us would be. Notice how Mary pours the perfume on His feet and wipes them with her hair? In the following chapter 13, we see Jesus washing the disciples' feet and drying them with a towel, telling them to do likewise. And in verse 7, Jesus says Mary did this "in preparation for my burial." Verse 7 is interpreted slightly differently in various translations, but they all commonly include the reference to Jesus' "burial." Mary served Jesus' upcoming death on the cross with the most valuable thing she possessed. Through this, Mary became a participant in the ultimate glory of God that Jesus would reveal through His death. That's why, uniquely, John's Gospel includes the detail that "the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume." This contrasts with Martha's earlier statement about Lazarus that "by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days." The smell of death has been transformed into the fragrance of Jesus' glory, which overcomes death. This is how Mary became a participant in God's glory.

Next, let's look at Judas Iscariot. In verse 4, the first description of Judas Iscariot is "one of his disciples." He was one of the twelve disciples chosen by Jesus. He spent three years of public ministry with Jesus, directly experiencing all of Jesus' teachings, signs, and miracles. Verse 6 also tells us he was in charge of the money bag. Just as in our church today, we don't entrust the accounting to just anyone. Among the twelve disciples, Judas Iscariot must have been considered trustworthy or well-educated. However, despite seeing, hearing, and experiencing who Jesus was from the closest position, he did not participate in God's glorious work. Instead, driven by his selfish desires, he harshly criticized Mary, who was participating in God's glorious work. He says in verse 5, "Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages." While these words alone might make him appear compassionate toward the poor, it was a clever lie to hide his true intentions. With this lie, he hurt Mary, who was honoring Jesus, while presenting himself as someone who truly worked for God's glory. However, John completely exposes his true nature in verse 6: "He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it." In an instant, he was transformed from one of Jesus' twelve disciples to a mere thief. Despite being in the closest position to participate in God's glory, he pursued his selfish desires instead of God's glory. And we all know how his story ended.

Let me conclude. Lazarus himself was a living testimony to God's glory. Today's passage begins and ends with references to Lazarus. Large crowds came not only to see Jesus but also to see Lazarus. Because of Lazarus, many Jews believed in Jesus, leading the chief priests to plot to kill Lazarus too. Mary, who directly experienced this glory of God, seemed to understand what kind of death Jesus would face to reveal an even greater glory of God. And she participated in that glory with everything she had. Judas Iscariot, despite being in the closest position to participate in God's glory, rejected that glory by pursuing his selfish desires. What glory of God have you experienced in your life? What choices will you make based on experiencing that glory? I pray that you will become participants in God's glory.
