10:1 내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 문을 통하여 양의 우리에 들어가지 아니하고 다른 데로 넘어가는 자는 절도며 강도요

10:2 문으로 들어가는 이는 양의 목자라

10:3 문지기는 그를 위하여 문을 열고 양은 그의 음성을 듣나니 그가 자기 양의 이름을 각각 불러 인도하여 내느니라

10:4 자기 양을 다 내놓은 후에 앞서 가면 양들이 그의 음성을 아는 고로 따라오되

10:5 타인의 음성은 알지 못하는 고로 타인을 따르지 아니하고 도리어 도망하느니라

10:6 예수께서 이 비유로 그들에게 말씀하셨으나 그들은 그가 하신 말씀이 무엇인지 알지 못하니라

[The Good Shepherd and His Sheep]

1 “Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. 2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” 6 Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.

10:7 그러므로 예수께서 다시 이르시되 내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 말하노니 나는 양의 문이라

10:8 나보다 먼저 온 자는 다 절도요 강도니 양들이 듣지 아니하였느니라

10:9 내가 문이니 누구든지 나로 말미암아 들어가면 구원을 받고 또는 들어가며 나오며 꼴을 얻으리

10:10 도둑이 오는 것은 도둑질하고 죽이고 멸망시키려는 것 뿐이요 내가 온 것은 양으로 생명을 얻게 하고 더 풍성히 얻게 하려는 것이라

7 Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

            제가 예전에 고등학교 다닐 때 미술선생님이 계셨는데요. 이분은 고등학교 미술 선생님이시지만 자신만의 작품세계가 있었던 분이셨습니다. 제가 미술을 그렇게 잘하지는 못해서 그닥 좋아하는 과목은 아니었지만 그 미술실에 들어가면 느껴지는 독특한 분위기는 아직까지 기억에 남는 것 같습니다. 미술실에 들어가면 뒤쪽 창고에 미술 선생님의 작품들이 잔뜩 있었는데 그 작품들은 대부분 유화로 문을 그려놓으신 작품들이었습니다. 미술 수업중에도 문에 대한 그분의 독특한 관점을 말씀해주시고는 했습니다. 문이란 서로 다른 두 공간을 이어주는 매개체다. 얼마나 멋지냐? 문이 없으면 분리되고 단절되었을 각각의 공간이 이 문이라는 매개체가 있어서 서로 오갈 수 있게 되는 것이다. 그 당시에는 대학가는데 필요도 없는 미술수업, 뭐 그냥 대충 건성으로 들었던 것 같습니다. 그러나 오늘 말씀을 준비하면서 그 때 일이 떠오르는 것을 보면 나름의 울림이 있었던 것이 아닌가 생각합니다. 여하튼 오늘 말씀에서 예수님께서는 스스로를 가르켜 나는 양의 문이다 라고 말씀하십니다. 저의 미술선생님이 말씀하셨던 것을 기억한다면 문이란 서로 분리되어있는, 단절되어있는 두 공간을 연결해 주는 존재일텐데 예수님께서는 어느 공간을 연결하시는 문이 되시는 것일까요? 아마도 하나님 나라와 세상을 연결하시는 문이 아니신가 생각합니다. 예수님은 내가 문이니 누구든지 나로 말미암아 들어가면 구원을 받는다고 하시기 때문이지요. 그리고 문을 통하지 않으면 다 절도요 강도라고 하십니다. 즉 예수님만이 하나님 나라로 들어갈 수 있는 문이라는 것입니다. 그렇기에 우리는 예수님을 통하여만 구원을 얻고 하나님 나라를 소망 할 수 있습니다. 예수님만이 구원의 문이신 것입니다.

When I was in high school, there was an art teacher. Although he was a high school art teacher, he had his own artistic world. While I wasn't particularly good at art and it wasn't my favorite subject, I still remember the unique atmosphere I felt whenever I entered that art room. In the storage area at the back of the art room, there were many of the teacher's works, mostly oil paintings of doors. During art classes, he would often share his unique perspective on doors. "A door," he would say, "is a medium that connects two different spaces. Isn't that wonderful? Spaces that would have been separated and disconnected can now be accessed through this medium called a door." At that time, I probably didn't pay much attention, thinking art class wasn't necessary for college admission. But as I prepare today's message, the fact that I remember this shows it must have resonated with me somehow. In today's scripture, Jesus refers to himself saying, "I am the gate for the sheep." If I recall what my art teacher said, a door is something that connects two separate, disconnected spaces - so what spaces is Jesus connecting as the gate? I believe He is the gate connecting God's kingdom and our world. Jesus says, "I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved." And He says that anyone who does not enter through the gate is a thief and a robber. This means Jesus is the only gate through which we can enter God's kingdom. Therefore, we can only receive salvation and hope for God's kingdom through Jesus. Jesus alone is the gate of salvation.

            구원의 문 되시는 예수님 함께 알아보겠습니다. 첫번째로 예수님만이 그 문이십니다. 1절과 2절 보시겠습니다. “내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 문을 통하여 양의 우리에 들어가지 아니하고 다른데로 넘어가는 자는 절도며 강도요 문으로 들어가는 이는 양의 목자라” 이 말씀에서 문은 절대적입니다. 문으로 들어가는 사람만이 양의 목자이고 문을 통하지 않고 담을 넘는 사람들은 다 도둑이고 강도라고 하십니다. 과거의 팔레스타인 지역에는 마을마다 양들을 관리하는 공동우리가 있었다고 합니다. 밤이 되면 양들을 지키기 편리하도록 마을의 모든 양을 공동 우리에 모아놓았습니다. 그리고 그 우리에는 문을 하나만 만들어서 그 문을 통해서만 우리에 들어갈 수 있었다고 합니다. 문이 하나 밖에 없으면 관리하기가 굉장히 편하지요. 여러마리 양들이 있다고 하더라도 이 문 하나만 지키면 됩니다. 누구든 이 문을 통하지 않고서는 양들에게 다가갈 수 없기 때문이지요. 목자나 문지기가 지키고 있는 이 문은 양을 위하는 사람들만 드나들 수 있는 문이었을 것입니다. 그렇기 때문에 이 문으로 들어가는 이는 양의 목자다 라고 말씀하고 계시지 않습니까? 그러나 이렇게 양 우리의 문이 있음에도 불구하고 다른데로 넘어가는 사람. 어떤 사람일까요? 양을 훔치거나 해치는 사람들이지요. 그들은 양을 위하는 사람들이 아닌 것입니다. 이들에 대한 부연 설명이 8절에 나옵니다. “나보다 먼저 온자는 다 절도요 강도니” 예수님보다 먼저 온 이들은 과연 누구였을까요? 에스겔서 34:2-3에 이렇게 말씀하십니다 “인자야 너는 이스라엘 목자들에게 예언하라 … 자기만 먹는 이스라엘 목자들은 화 있을진저 목자들이 양 떼를 먹이는 것이 마땅하지 아니하냐 너희가 살진 양을 잡아 그 기름을 먹으며 그 털을 입되 양 떼는 먹이지 아니하는도다” 이 거짓 목자들은 바로 예수님 당시의 유대 관리들과 종교 지도자들을 가르키시는 것입니다. 이들은 10절 말씀처럼 오히려 양을 도둑질하고 죽이고 멸망시키기만 한 이들이었습니다. 그러나 예수님은 양으로 생명을 얻게 하고 더 풍성히 얻게 하려는 것이라는 말씀을 하십니다. 7절에서 예수님께서 다시 말씀하십니다. “내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 말하노니 나는 양의 문이라” 이 말씀을 원문에 충실하게 번역하면 예수님은 “그 양들의 그 문이다.” 라고 말씀하십니다. 즉 예수님이 여러 문 중의 하나가 아니라 바로 그 문임을 알려주시는 것이지요. 예수님만이 구원의 꼴을 얻는 바로 그 문인 것입니다.

Let's explore Jesus as the gate of salvation. First, Jesus alone is that gate. Let's look at verses 1 and 2: "Very truly I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep." In this passage, the gate is absolute. Only those who enter through the gate are shepherds of the sheep, and those who climb over the walls without using the gate are all thieves and robbers. In ancient Palestine, every village had a communal sheep pen where they managed their sheep. At night, all the village's sheep would be gathered in this communal pen for easier protection. The pen had only one gate, and that was the only way to enter. Having just one gate made management very convenient. Even with many sheep, they only needed to guard this one gate. No one could approach the sheep without going through this gate. This gate, guarded by the shepherd or gatekeeper, was only for those who cared for the sheep. That's why the scripture says, "The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep." However, despite the presence of this gate, there were those who climbed in by other ways. What kind of people were they? They were those who would steal or harm the sheep. They weren't people who cared for the sheep. Further explanation about these people appears in verse 8: "All who have come before me are thieves and robbers." Who were these people who came before Jesus? Ezekiel 34:2-3 says, "Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel... Woe to you shepherds of Israel who only take care of yourselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock? You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock." These false shepherds refer to the Jewish officials and religious leaders of Jesus' time. As verse 10 states, they only came to steal and kill and destroy. But Jesus says He has come that they may have life, and have it to the full. In verse 7, Jesus says again, "Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep." In the original text, Jesus says He is "THE gate for THE sheep." This indicates that Jesus isn't just one of many gates, but THE gate. Jesus alone is THE gate through which salvation's pasture is found.

            두번째로 예수님만이 구원 되십니다. 세상의 많은 사람들이 예수님을 통하지 않고서도 구원의 길이 있다고 생각합니다. 그러나 그렇지 않습니다. 예수님께서는 앞에서 당신만이 그 양들의 그 문이 되신다고 하셨습니다. 그리고 그 하나의 문만이 구원을 얻는 문이 되시는 것입니다. 9절입니다. “내가 문이니 누구든지 나로 말미암아 들어가면 구원을 받고 또는 들어가며 나오며 꼴을 얻으리라” 이 문은 무슨 문입니까? 구원을 받는 문입니다. 이 문은 누구든지 들어갈 수 있습니다. 예수님께서 그렇게 말씀하셨습니다. 그러나 조건이 있으니 그것은 바로 “나로 말미암아 들어가면 구원을 받고” 즉 예수님께서 바로 그 단 하나의 문이시기에 이 문되시는 예수님을 통하지 않고서는 구원을 받을 수 없다는 말씀입니다. 그러나 말씀처럼 예수님으로 말미암아 들어가고 나오는 이들은 꼴을 얻으리라고 말씀하십니다. 이 말씀은 신명기 28:6에서 하나님의 말씀을 순종하는 자에게 하나님께서 내리시는 축복을 생각나게 합니다. “네가 들어와도 복을 받고 나가도 복을 받을 것이니라” 예수님만이 유일한 구원의 통로입니다. 그 문을 드나드는 양은 지속해서 풍성히 꼴을 얻는 것입니다. 양들이 얻는 꼴은 앞서 예수님께서 말씀하신 ‘생명의 떡’을 떠올리게 합니다. 양들은 이 생명의 떡을 먹고 10절 하반절의 말씀처럼 생명을 더욱 더 풍성히 얻게 되는 것입니다. 바로 이를 위하여 예수님께서 우리에게 오신 것입니다.

Secondly, salvation comes through Jesus alone. Many people in the world think there are ways to salvation without going through Jesus. However, this isn't true. Jesus has already declared that He alone is THE gate for THE sheep. And this one gate alone is the gate of salvation. Look at verse 9: "I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture." What kind of gate is this? It's the gate of salvation. Anyone can enter through this gate. Jesus said so. But there's a condition: "whoever enters through me will be saved." This means that because Jesus is that one and only gate, there can be no salvation without going through Him, the gate. However, as the scripture says, those who come in and go out through Jesus will find pasture. This reminds us of Deuteronomy 28:6, where God promises blessings to those who obey His word: "You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out." Jesus is the only path to salvation. The sheep who pass through this gate continuously find abundant pasture. The pasture the sheep find reminds us of the 'bread of life' that Jesus spoke about earlier. The sheep eat this bread of life and, as stated in the latter half of verse 10, have life more abundantly. This is precisely why Jesus came to us.

            말씀을 맺습니다. 예수님은 하나님 나라에서 이 땅에 오셨습니다. 그리고 이 땅에서 다시 하나님나라로 올라가셨습니다. 완전히 분리 되었던 하나님의 나라와 죄인된 인간의 세계가 예수님께서 십자가에서 죽으심으로 다시 연결이 된 것입니다. 우리는 예수님을 통하여 하나님의 나라를 경험할 수 있습니다. 각각 분리되었던 세계를 예수님께서 문이 되어주신 것입니다. 이 예수님 이외에는 다른 문은 없습니다. 예수님만이 구원의 문이십니다.

In conclusion, Jesus came from God's kingdom to this earth. And from this earth, He ascended back to God's kingdom. The completely separated kingdom of God and the world of sinful humans were reconnected through Jesus' death on the cross. We can experience God's kingdom through Jesus. He became the gate between these separated worlds. There is no other gate besides Jesus. Jesus alone is the gate of salvation.
