31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

8:33 그들이 대답하되 우리가 아브라함의 자손이라 남의 종이 된 적이 없거늘 어찌하여 우리가 자유롭게 되리라 하느냐

33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”

8:34 예수께서 대답하시되 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 죄를 범하는 자마다 죄의 종이라

8:35 종은 영원히 집에 거하지 못하되 아들은 영원히 거하나니

8:36 그러므로 아들이 너희를 자유롭게 하면 너희가 참으로 자유로우리라

8:37 나도 너희가 아브라함의 자손인 줄 아노라 그러나 내 말이 너희 안에 있을 곳이 없으므로 나를 죽이려 하는도다

8:38 나는 내 아버지에게서 본 것을 말하고 너희는 너희 아비에게서 들은 것을 행하느니라

34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.”

8:39 대답하여 이르되 우리 아버지는 아브라함이라 하니 예수께서 이르시되 너희가 아브라함의 자손이면 아브라함의 행한 일들을 할 것이거늘

8:40 지금 하나님께 들은 진리를 너희에게 말한 사람인 나를 죽이려 하는도다 아브라함은 이렇게 하지 아니하였느니라

8:41 너희는 너희 아비가 행한 일들을 하는도다 대답하되 우리가 음란한 데서 나지 아니하였고 아버지는 한 분뿐이시니 곧 하나님이시로다

39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.

“If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would[c] do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.”

“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”

8:42 예수께서 이르시되 하나님이 너희 아버지였으면 너희가 나를 사랑하였으리니 이는 내가 하나님께로부터 나와서 왔음이라 나는 스스로 온 것이 아니요 아버지께서 나를 보내신 것이니라

8:43 어찌하여 내 말을 깨닫지 못하느냐 이는 내 말을 들을 줄 알지 못함이로다

8:44 너희는 너희 아비 마귀에게서 났으니 너희 아비의 욕심을 너희도 행하고자 하느니라 그는 처음부터 살인한 자요 진리가 그 속에 없으므로 진리에 서지 못하고 거짓을 말할 때마다 제 것으로 말하나니 이는 그가 거짓말쟁이요 거짓의 아비가 되었음이라

8:45 내가 진리를 말하므로 너희가 나를 믿지 아니하는도다

8:46 너희 중에 누가 나를 죄로 책잡겠느냐 내가 진리를 말하는데도 어찌하여 나를 믿지 아니하느냐

8:47 하나님께 속한 자는 하나님의 말씀을 듣나니 너희가 듣지 아니함은 하나님께 속하지 아니하였음이로다

42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

오늘 말씀은 예수님께서 자기를 믿은 유대인들과 나눈 언쟁을 다루고 있습니다. 비록 예수님을 믿는 듯 했지만 모든 것을 꿰뚫어 보시고 아시는 예수님 앞에 그들의 거짓된 마음은 숨겨질 수 없었습니다. 예수님은 43절에서 그들에게 “어찌하여 내 말을 깨닫지 못하느냐 이는 내 말을 들을 줄 알지 못함이로다”하시며 44절에서는 아예 노골적으로 그들의 아비가 마귀라고 말씀하십니다. 어찌하여 이들은 예수님을 믿는다고 했는데 참 된 제자가 되지 못했을까요?

Today's passage deals with the argument Jesus had with the Jews who had believed in Him. Although they seemed to believe in Jesus, their deceitful hearts could not be hidden from Him, who sees and knows everything. In verse 43, Jesus asks them, "Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word." Then, in verse 44, He goes even further, telling them outright that their father is the devil.

Why, then, did these people, who claimed to believe in Jesus, fail to become true disciples?

1. 마귀 아버지 vs 하나님 아버지

먼저, 그들은 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로써 얻게 되는 의로움, 즉 칭의를 이해하지 못했습니다. 

예수님께서 말씀하십니다. “진리를 알지니 진리가 너희를 자유롭게 하리라(32).” 그러자 이들은 단지 그들이 선택받은 민족, 아브라함의 자손임을 언급하며 남의 종이 된 적이 없음을 강조합니다. 그들은 율법을 철저하게 지키는 행위로 자신들이 하나님 앞에 깨끗한 백성이라 자부하며 구원을 확신하고 있습니다. 그런 그들에게 예수님께서는 “죄를 범하는 자마다 죄의 종이라(34)”라며 일침을 가하십니다.

사도 바울은 로마서에서 다음과 같이 말했습니다. “그러므로 율법의 행위로 그의 앞에 의롭다 하심을 얻을 육체가 없나니 율법으로는 죄를 깨달음이니라 (롬 3:20).” 그렇습니다. 예수님을 믿는 믿음 없이는 의롭다함을 얻을 수 없는 죄인의 몸인 것 입니다. 율법은 단지 우리가 완벽하게 율법을 지킬 수 없는 죄인임을 확인해주는 도구일 뿐입니다.

1. Father of Lies vs. Father God

First, they failed to understand the righteousness that comes through faith in Jesus Christ—justification.

Jesus said, "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (John 8:32). However, instead of embracing this, they clung to their identity as Abraham’s descendants, insisting that they had never been slaves to anyone. They took pride in their strict adherence to the Law, believing that this made them pure before God and secured their salvation. In response, Jesus confronted them, saying, "Everyone who sins is a slave to sin" (John 8:34).

The apostle Paul echoes this in Romans: "Therefore, no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin" (Romans 3:20). Indeed, apart from faith in Jesus, no one can be justified. The Law serves only to reveal our sinful nature, proving that we are incapable of keeping it perfectly.

두 번째로 그들은 자신들이 죄인임을 인지하지 못했습니다.

예수님께서 아브라함의 자손이라는 유대인들의 주장을 반박하니 유대인들이 예수님께 답합니다. 41절에 “대답하되 우리가 음란한 데서 나지 아니하였고 아버지는 한 분뿐이시니 곧 하나님이시로다.” 그러나 우리는 이것이 사실이 아님을 알고있지요. 전도자는 우리에게 “선을 행하고 전혀 죄를 범하지 아니하는 의인은 세상에 없다” (전도서 7:20)라고 말해줍니다. 아담의 죄로 인하여 그 이후에 태어난 모든 인간은 죄성을 가지고 태어납니다. 모두가 음란한 데서 태어난 죄인이란 말입니다. 유대인들은 자만에 빠져 두 눈이 가리어져 자신들이 범하는 죄를 깨닫지 못했습니다. 로마서에 따르면 유대인들은 간음하지 말라 말하면서 간음하고 우상을 가증히 여긴다 하면서 신전 물건을 도둑질하는 죄를 범합니다. 율법을 자랑하면서 오히려 율법을 범함으로 하나님을 욕되게 합니다 (롬 2:22-23).  자신들이 악의 권세를 이기지 못해 허우적 거리고 있는 현실을 망각하고 있습니다.

Secondly, they failed to recognize that they were sinners.

When Jesus refuted their claim of being Abraham’s descendants, they responded, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God” (John 8:41). However, we know that this is not true. The Preacher reminds us, “Surely there is no one on earth who is righteous, no one who does what is right and never sins” (Ecclesiastes 7:20). Because of Adam’s sin, every human born after him inherits a sinful nature. In other words, we are all sinners, born in iniquity.

Blinded by their pride, the Jews failed to recognize their own sins. According to Romans, while they preached against adultery, they committed adultery themselves; while condemning idolatry, they stole from temples. They boasted in the Law, yet dishonored God by breaking it (Romans 2:22-23). They were drowning under the power of sin, yet refused to acknowledge their condition.

우리는 다 죄를 짓습니다. 그리고 내가 얼마나 죄악된 인간인지를 깨달아야 합니다. 그걸 아는 자만이 구세주의 필요성을 깨닫습니다. 예수 그리스도 없이는 꿈도 소망도 없이 지옥행 열차를 탄 존재였다는 것을 뼈저리게 느껴야 은혜를 압니다. 유대인들은 이런 경험이 없었던 것 같습니다. 그러나 우리는 다들 경험하셨지요? 맹인처럼 두 눈이 가리어져 보지 못했던 죄악된 내 모습들이 하나님의 주권적인 통치 가운데 다 까발려져서 오직 할 수 있는 것이라곤 통곡하며, “주님 제가 죄인입니다. 용서하여 주시옵소서.” 회개하신 경험 있으실 것 입니다. 그 당시에는 부끄럽고 도망치고 싶었을 수 있습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 지금 당장 부끄러운 수치심보다 하나님께서 나를 너무 사랑하사 내가 더 이상 죄 가운데 머물지 않기를 바라시는 그 아버지의 마음으로 허락하신 고난임을 이해하는 축복이 여러분과 함께 했고 앞으로도 함께 하시기를 기도드립니다.

We all sin. And we must recognize just how sinful we truly are. Only those who grasp this reality understand their need for a Savior. We must deeply realize that without Jesus Christ, we were hopelessly bound for destruction. The Jews in this passage seemed to lack such an experience. But haven’t we all had this moment? When the depth of our sinfulness was exposed before God's sovereign rule, and all we could do was cry out in repentance, “Lord, I am a sinner. Please forgive me.”

At that moment, we may have felt ashamed and wanted to run away. Yet, in hindsight, we see that God, in His great love, allowed us to experience that conviction—not to shame us, but to lead us out of sin. My prayer is that this blessing—of understanding God’s love even in discipline—continues to be with you now and always.

저는 과거 한 때 제가 꽤 괜찮은 사람이라고 생각했습니다. 어릴 때 저희 집 가훈이 “정직하게 살자” 였는데요. 남들에게 피해 안주고 내 할 일 잘해내면서 꽤 정직하게 사는 착한 사람이라고 생각했습니다. 그렇게 믿고 살아왔는데 어느 순간부터 주님을 믿고 난 뒤로 점점 제가 알고 있는 나와 현실의 나와의 격차를 발견하게 됐습니다. ‘어라? 이건 내가 아닌데? 억울해!’ 처음에는 부정을 했다가 나중에는 자기연민에 빠졌었습니다. 그러다가 이제 괴로우니까 회피를 하려는 위기까지 갔다가 깨달았습니다. ‘아 내가 괜찮은 사람이 아니였구나. 죄인이구나. 주님이 필요한 병자였구나.’ 이 깨달음의 은혜로 제가 지금 이 자리에 있는 줄 믿습니다. 

There was a time in the past when I thought I was a pretty decent person. My family’s motto growing up was “Live honestly,” so I believed I was a good person—living uprightly, not harming others, and diligently fulfilling my responsibilities. I lived with that belief, but after coming to faith in the Lord, I began to notice the gap between the person I thought I was and the reality of who I truly was.

"Wait, this isn’t me! This isn’t fair!" At first, I denied it. Then, I sank into self-pity. Eventually, the struggle became so overwhelming that I found myself wanting to avoid it altogether. But in the midst of that, I came to a realization: "Oh... I wasn’t a good person after all. I am a sinner. I am a sick soul in need of the Lord."

I believe it is by the grace of this realization that I stand where I am today.

2. 아들을 믿음으로 누리는 권세

이런 불쌍한 인간들을 하나님께서 너무 사랑하사 하나뿐인 아들을 보내시어 죄와 사망의 권세에서 우리를 구원하셨습니다. 예수님께서 알려주십니다. 36절에 “그러므로 아들이 너희를 자유롭게 하면 너희가 참으로 자유로우리라.” 아멘! 예수님께서 우리의 죄를 십자가에 대속하셨음으로 죄사함을 받았음을 믿고 예수님을 구주로 고백하는 자에게 무한한 영광과 특권이 주어집니다. 그 중에 하나는 바로 하나님의 자녀가 되는 것입니다.

“때가 차매 하나님이 그 아들을 보내사 여자에게서 나게 하시고 율법 아래에 있는 자들을 속량하시고 우리로 아들의 명분을 얻게 하려 하심이라. 너희가 아들이므로 하나님이 그 아들의 영을 우리 마음 가운데 보내사 아빠 아버지라 부르게 하셨느니라. 그러므로 네가 이 후로는 종이 아니요 아들이니 아들이면 하나님으로 말미암아 유업을 받을자니라” (갈라디아서 4:4-7).

구원해주시는 것만해도 감사한데, 죄의 종이 아닌 것 만으로도 참으로 감사한데, 성령님을 주셔서 하나님과 교통하게 하시고 하나님을 아버지라 부를 수 있게 됐습니다. 또한 예수님을 믿는 믿음으로 말미암아 예수님이 하나님의 아들로서 받게 될 하나님의 유업을 우리 믿는 자들 또한 함께 받게 됩니다. 35절의 말씀처럼 우리는 더 이상 종이 아니라 영원히 하나님의 나라에 거할 수 있는 아들이 된 것입니다.

2. The Authority Given Through Faith in the Son

God loved us—wretched sinners—so much that He sent His one and only Son to save us from the power of sin and death. Jesus declares in John 8:36, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” Amen! Because Jesus bore our sins on the cross, those who believe in Him, receive the forgiveness of sins, and confess Him as their Lord and Savior are granted infinite glory and privilege. One of the greatest of these is becoming children of God.

"But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba, Father.’ So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir” (Galatians 4:4-7).

It is already an immeasurable blessing to be saved—to no longer be slaves to sin. But God goes beyond that! He gives us the Holy Spirit, allowing us to commune with Him and call Him Father. And through faith in Jesus, we become heirs alongside Christ, sharing in the glorious inheritance of the Son of God. What an amazing grace! As stated in verse 35, we are no longer slaves but have become sons who can dwell in God’s kingdom forever.

결론

유대인들이 하나님의 선택을 받은 민족임은 거부할 수 없는 사실입니다. 그러나 그들은 진정 하나님을 알지도 사랑하지도 못했습니다. 다 지키지도 못할 율법의 무게에 짓눌려 참 된 자유를 누리지 못하는 불쌍한 자들입니다. 혹시 우리 또한 그러고 있지는 않습니까? 하나님을 왜곡하고 오해하여 자기 마음대로 성경을 해석하고 율법적인 삶을 살고 있지는 않는가 말입니다. 우리 모두 주님의 말씀안에 거하여 참으로 예수님의 제자가 됩시다. 그리하여 진리 안에서 자유함을 누립시다. 오늘 아침 각자의 믿음을 다시 한번 점검해 보고 주님 안에서 자유를 누리며 승리하시는 하루 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 기도드립니다.

Conclusion

It is an undeniable fact that the Jewish people were chosen by God. However, they neither truly knew nor loved God. Burdened by the weight of the law, which they could not fully keep, they were unable to experience true freedom. Could we be in the same situation? Are we distorting and misunderstanding God, interpreting the Bible according to our own desires, and living a legalistic life?

Let us all abide in the Word of the Lord and truly become disciples of Jesus. In doing so, let us experience the freedom found in the truth. This morning, I encourage you to examine your faith once again, and I pray in the name of the Lord that you may live in His freedom and victory today.
