53 Then they all went home,

8:1 예수는 감람 산으로 가시다

1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

8:2 아침에 다시 성전으로 들어오시니 백성이 다 나아오는지라 앉으사 그들을 가르치시더니

8:3 서기관들과 바리새인들이 음행 중에 잡힌 여자를 끌고 와서 가운데 세우고

8:4 예수께 말하되 선생이여 이 여자가 간음하다가 현장에서 잡혔나이다

8:5 모세는 율법에 이러한 여자를 돌로 치라 명하였거니와 선생은 어떻게 말하겠나이까

8:6 그들이 이렇게 말함은 고발할 조건을 얻고자 하여 예수를 시험함이러라 예수께서 몸을 굽히사 손가락으로 땅에 쓰시니

2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.

8:7 그들이 묻기를 마지 아니하는지라 이에 일어나 이르시되 너희 중에 죄 없는 자가 먼저 돌로 치라 하시고

8:8 다시 몸을 굽혀 손가락으로 땅에 쓰시니

But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.

8:9 그들이 이 말씀을 듣고 양심의 가책을 느껴 어른으로 시작하여 젊은이까지 하나씩 하나씩 나가고 오직 예수와 그 가운데 섰는 여자만 남았더라

8:10 예수께서 일어나사 여자 외에 아무도 없는 것을 보시고 이르시되 여자여 너를 고발하던 그들이 어디 있느냐 너를 정죄한 자가 없느냐

9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”

8:11 대답하되 주여 없나이다 예수께서 이르시되 나도 너를 정죄하지 아니하노니 가서 다시는 죄를 범하지 말라 하시니라)

11 “No one, sir,” she said.

“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

                요한은 요한복음을 통해 예수님이 누구신가를 우리에게 말씀해주고 있습니다. 예수님은 말씀이시며, 예수님은 하나님이시고, 예수님은 인간이십니다. 또한 예수님은 빛이시며 생명이시고 구약에서 예언한 메시야이시지요. 이렇듯 요한은 예수님이 하신 일보다 예수님께서 누구신지에 대해 좀 더 촛점을 맞추어 우리에게 예수님을 전하고 있습니다. 그렇다면 오늘 말씀에서 요한이 우리에게 알려주고 있는 예수님은 어떤 분이실까요? 말씀이신 예수님? 하나님이신 예수님? 저는 오늘 말씀에서 드러난 예수님의 모습은 바로 하나님의 심판자 되시는 예수님이라고 생각합니다. 심판이라는 말은 듣는 것 만으로도 두려움을 일으키지요. 하나님의 완전한 공의로우심과 의로우심 앞에서 죄인인 우리는 모두 유죄 판결을 받을 수 밖에 없기 때문에 우리는 본질적으로 심판이라는 말에 두려움이 앞서는 것인지도 모르겠습니다. 그러나 오늘 말씀은 조금 다른 심판자를 우리에게 소개시켜 줍니다. 요한은 예수님이 우리를 구원하시는 심판자임을 알려주기 때문입니다. 심판을 해야 할 사람이 심판받는 이를 구원한다. 참으로 이상한 말이 아닐 수 없습니다. 그래서 오늘은 예수, 우리를 구원하시는 하나님의 심판자라는 제목으로 이 이상한 일에 대해 함께 말씀 나누기 원합니다.

Through the Gospel of John, John tells us who Jesus is. Jesus is the Word, Jesus is God, and Jesus is human. Furthermore, Jesus is the light, the life, and the Messiah prophesied in the Old Testament. In this way, John focuses more on who Jesus is rather than what He did, delivering Jesus' identity to us. So in today's passage, who does John reveal Jesus to be? Is He the Word? Is He God? I believe that in today's passage, Jesus is revealed as God's Judge. The word "judgment" alone strikes fear in our hearts. Perhaps we're inherently fearful of judgment because, before God's perfect righteousness and justice, we sinners can only receive a guilty verdict. However, today's passage introduces us to a different kind of Judge. John shows us that Jesus is the Judge who saves us. A judge who saves those whom He should condemn - it sounds strange, doesn't it? So today, I want to share with you about this peculiar truth under the title "Jesus: God's Judge Who Saves Us."

                먼저 예수님이 어떤 분이신지 오늘 본문의 말씀을 통해 한 번 알아보겠습니다. 오늘 말씀 53절과 1절을 보니 “다 각각 집으로 돌아가고 예수님은 감람산으로 가시니라” 라고 합니다. 사람들이 다 각각 집으로 돌아가 가족들과 시간을 보낼 때 예수님께서는 하나님 아버지께 기도를 하기 위해 감람산으로 올라가십니다. 예수님께서 이렇게 기도하기 위해 산에 올라가시는 것을 누가복음 22:39에서는 습관을 따라 올라가셨다라고 적고 있습니다. 예수님께서 하나님과 얼마나 가까운 분이신지를 우리는 이 모습을 통해 알 수 있습니다.

                2절에 이른 “아침에 다시 성전으로 들어오시니 백성이 다 나아오는지라 앉으사 그들을 가르치시더니” 이른 아침부터 예수님께 나아오는 사람들을 예수님께서는 거절하지 않으셨습니다. 아마도 전날 모였던 무리가 모두 왔을 것입니다. 이들을 내쫓지 아니하시고 그곳에 앉으셔서 그들을 친히 가르치시는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 이는 6:37에 “내게 오는 자는 내가 결코 내어쫓지 아니하리라”라고 하신 말씀처럼 예수님께서 주님께 나오는 사람들을 암탉이 병아리들을 날개 아래 모음같이 품으시는 것입니다. 예수님께 나아오는 자들을 예수님은 늘 받아주시는 것입니다.

Let's first look at who Jesus is through today's passage. In John 7:53 and 8:1, we read, "Then each went to their own home. But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives." While everyone returned home to spend time with their families, Jesus went up to the Mount of Olives to pray to God the Father. Luke 22:39 tells us that Jesus went "as usual" to the Mount of Olives - this was His habit. Through this, we can see how close Jesus was to God.

Verse 2 says, "At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them." Jesus didn't turn away the people who came to Him early in the morning. Perhaps these were the same crowds from the day before. We see that He didn't send them away but sat down and taught them personally. This fulfills what He said in John 6:37, "Whoever comes to me I will never drive away." Jesus gathers those who come to Him like a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. He always receives those who come to Him.

                그런데 3절부터 분위기가 갑자기 바뀝니다. 서기관들과 바리새인들이 바람피다가 현장에서 잡힌 여인을 끌고와서 가운데 세웁니다. 예수님을 당신이라 부르던 이들이 갑자기 예수님께 선생님이라고 부르며 예수님을 시험합니다. 그런데 이상합니다. 5절에서 이들은 “모세는 율법에 이러한 여자를 돌로 치라 명하였거니와 선생은 어떻게 말하겠나이까?”라고 묻는데 원래 모세의 율법은 레위기 20:10에 “어떤 남자가 이웃의 아내와 간음하였다면 간음한 남녀 모두는 죽여야 한다”고 되어있습니다. 남녀 모두를 죽여야 한다는데 남자는 어디있는지 보이지 않습니다. 즉 이들의 촛점은 실제 이 여자가 율법에 따라 죽어야 한다는 것에 있는 것이 아닌 것입니다. 이들의 관심은 6절에 적혀 있듯이 “고발할 조건을 얻고자 하여 예수를 시험함이러라” 즉 간음한 여인을 처벌하는 것이 목적이 아니라 예수님을 고발할 조건을 얻어 예수님을 죽이려 하였던 것입니다. 그러나 재미있는 것은 그들은 의도하지 않았을지 몰라도 그들은 간음한 여인을 예수님이 계셨던 성전으로 데리고 옵니다. 성전은 어떤 곳입니까? 하나님의 보좌가 있는 곳입니다. 하나님의 임재가 머무는 곳입니다. 바로 그곳에서 그들은 예수님에게 이 여인의 처분, 즉 심판을 묻고 있습니다. 그들은 의도하지 않았지만 하나님의 성전에서 예수님이 심판자되시는 상황을 스스로 만들고만 것입니다. 예수님을 모세의 율법으로 함정에 빠뜨려 죽이려하였던 이들이 오히려 예수님을 율법의 심판자로 세운것입니다.

But the atmosphere suddenly changes in verse 3. The teachers of the law and Pharisees bring in a woman caught in adultery and make her stand in front of everyone. Those who had been calling Him "Lord" suddenly address Him as "Teacher" and try to test Him. Something's strange here. In verse 5, they say, "In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" But the original Mosaic Law in Leviticus 20:10 states, "If a man commits adultery with another man's wife—with the wife of his neighbor—both the adulterer and the adulteress are to be put to death." Both the man and woman should be put to death, but where is the man? Their focus isn't really on following the law. As verse 6 reveals, "They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him." Their goal wasn't to punish the adulterous woman but to find grounds to accuse and kill Jesus.

Interestingly, though perhaps unintentionally, they brought the woman to the temple where Jesus was. What is the temple? It's where God's throne is, where His presence dwells. Right there, they ask Jesus for His judgment on this woman. Without realizing it, they created a situation where Jesus acts as Judge in God's temple. Those who tried to trap Jesus with Moses' law inadvertently positioned Him as the Judge of the law.

                심판자이신 예수님께서 이들에게 말씀하십니다. 7절 “너희 중에 죄 없는 자가 먼저 돌로 치라.” 인간 중에 죄 없는 자가 어디 있습니까? 죄 있는 인간이 다른 사람을 정죄 할 수 없는 것입니다. 그렇다면 누가 우리의 죄를 정죄하고 심판 하실 수 있습니까? 오직 예수님만이 심판자 되시는 것입니다. 요한복음 5:22 “아버지께서 아무도 심판하지 아니하시고 심판을 다 아들에게 맡기셨으니” 하나님께서도 심판을 다 아들에게 맡기셨다고 하십니다. 오직 예수님만이 심판자 되시기에 이런 말씀을 하실 수 있는 것입니다.

                그들이 이 말씀을 듣고 나이든 사람부터 하나둘씩 사라지자 예수님과 여인만 자리에 남습니다. 예수님이 여인에게 물으십니다. 10절 “여자여 너를 고발하던 그들이 어디 있느냐 너를 정죄한 자가 없느냐?” 11절 “대답하되 주여 없나이다 예수께서 이르시되 나도 너를 정죄하지 아니하노니 가서 다시는 죄를 범하지 말라 하시니라” 방금 전에 예수님께서 심판자 되신다고 말씀을 드렸습니다. 죄인된 다른 사람들은 이 여인의 죄를 정죄할 수 없지만 예수님께서는 이 여인의 죄를 심판하셔야만 합니다. 하나님의 공의 앞에서 죄는 반드시 그 댓가를 치뤄야만 합니다. 그러나 예수님께서는 이 간음한 여인에게 “나도 너를 정죄하지 아니하노니”라고 말씀하십니다. 어떻게 이런 말씀을 하실 수 있습니까? 하나님의 공의가 망가진 것입니까? 아닙니다. 바로 예수님께서 이 여인의 죗값을 전부 치루셨기 때문입니다. 예수님께서 십자가에서 이 여인의 죄를 대신하여 죽으심으로 하나님의 공의가 충족되었고 이 여인은 돌에 맞아 죽을 사망에서 구원된 것입니다. 심판자이신 예수님께서 이 여인의 구원자가 되어주신 것입니다. 요한복음 12:47 “내가 온 것은 세상을 심판하려 함이 아니요 세상을 구원하려 함이로라” 이 말씀대로 하나님으로부터 모든 심판의 권한을 받으신 예수님께서 이 땅에 오신 것은 바로 우리를 구원하려 하심이었던 것입니다.

As Judge, Jesus tells them in verse 7, "Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." Who among humans is without sin? No sinful human can condemn another. Then who can judge and condemn our sins? Only Jesus can be the Judge. John 5:22 says, "Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son." Even God the Father has entrusted all judgment to the Son. Only Jesus, as the rightful Judge, could make such a statement.

After hearing this, they leave one by one, starting with the older ones, until only Jesus and the woman remain. Jesus asks her in verses 10-11, "'Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?' 'No one, sir,' she said. 'Then neither do I condemn you,' Jesus declared. 'Go now and leave your life of sin.'" I just mentioned that Jesus is the Judge. While other sinful people couldn't condemn this woman, Jesus should judge her sin. Before God's justice, sin must always be paid for. Yet Jesus tells this adulterous woman, "Neither do I condemn you." How could He say this? Has God's justice been compromised? No - it's because Jesus would pay the full price for her sins. Through His death on the cross in her place, God's justice was satisfied, and she was saved from the death of stoning. The Judge became her Savior. As John 12:47 states, "For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world." True to these words, Jesus, who received all authority to judge from God, came to earth to save us.

                말씀을 맺습니다. 예수님께서는 우리를 구원하시는 하나님의 심판자이십니다. 하나님께서는 예수님께 모든 심판의 권한을 맡기셨지만 예수님께서는 심판이 아니라 세상을 구원하시려 이 땅에 오셨습니다. 간음한 여인에게 나도 너를 정죄하지 아니 하노니라고 하신 말씀은 심판자이신 예수님이 그 여인의 죄를 대신하여 죽으셨기 때문에 하실 수 있는 말씀인 것입니다. 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 예수님께서 우리의 심판자 되시지만 우리를 구원하시려 우리를 위해 죽으셨습니다. 우리가 예수님을 믿을 때에 예수님께서 나도 너를 정죄하지 아니한다고 말씀하시는 것입니다. 이것은 놀라운 은혜입니다. 심판자 되시는 예수님께서 우리의 구원자가 되어주시는 것입니다. 그러므로 우리는 주님을 더욱 사랑해야 합니다. 주를 사랑함으로 죄에서 떠나야 하는 것입니다. 기도하시겠습니다.

Let me conclude. Jesus is God's Judge who saves us. Though God entrusted all judgment to Jesus, He came to earth not to judge but to save the world. Jesus could say "Neither do I condemn you" to the adulterous woman because He, the Judge, would die for her sins. The same applies to us. Though Jesus is our Judge, He died to save us. When we believe in Jesus, He tells us, "I do not condemn you." This is amazing grace. Jesus, who is our Judge, becomes our Savior. Therefore, we must love Him more. Out of love for Him, we must turn away from sin. Let us pray.
