7:1 그 후에 예수께서 갈릴리에서 다니시고 유대에서 다니려 아니하심은 유대인들이 죽이려 함이러라

7:2 유대인의 명절인 초막절이 가까운지라

7:3 그 형제들이 예수께 이르되 당신이 행하는 일을 제자들도 보게 여기를 떠나 유대로 가소서

7:4 스스로 나타나기를 구하면서 묻혀서 일하는 사람이 없나니 이 일을 행하려 하거든 자신을 세상에 나타내소서 하니

7:5 이는 그 형제들까지도 예수를 믿지 아니함이러라

[Jesus Goes to the Festival of Tabernacles]

1 After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him. 2 But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near, 3 Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. 4 No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 For even his own brothers did not believe in him.

7:6 예수께서 이르시되 내 때는 아직 이르지 아니하였거니와 너희 때는 늘 준비되어 있느니라

7:7 세상이 너희를 미워하지 아니하되 나를 미워하나니 이는 내가 세상의 일들을 악하다고 증언함이라

7:8 너희는 명절에 올라가라 내 때가 아직 차지 못하였으니 나는 이 명절에 아직 올라가지 아니하노라

7:9 이 말씀을 하시고 갈릴리에 머물러 계시니라

6 Therefore Jesus told them, “My time is not yet here; for you any time will do. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are evil. 8 You go to the festival. I am not[b] going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come.” 9 After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee.

7:10 그 형제들이 명절에 올라간 후에 자기도 올라가시되 나타내지 않고 은밀히 가시니라

7:11 명절 중에 유대인들이 예수를 찾으면서 그가 어디 있느냐 하고

10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret. 11 Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus and asking, “Where is he?”

7:12 예수께 대하여 무리 중에서 수군거림이 많아 어떤 사람은 좋은 사람이라 하며 어떤 사람은 아니라 무리를 미혹한다 하나

7:13 그러나 유대인들을 두려워하므로 드러나게 그에 대하여 말하는 자가 없더라

12 Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.”

Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.” 13 But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders.

오늘 말씀의 시작은 “그 후에”로 시작합니다. 그 후는 어제 살펴보았던 오병이어 사건이겠지요. 시간 상으로 보면 오병이어 사건은 6장 4절을 봤을 때 유월절이 가까운 어느 날이었습니다. 유월절은 양력으로 3~4월쯤인데요. 오늘 본문은 초막절이 가까운 어느 날이라고 나옵니다. 초막절은 양력으로 9월~10월 쯤에 드리는 절기입니다. 그러니 오늘 본문은 오병이어 사건 이후 한 5-7개월 후에 일어난 사건입니다.

예수님께서는 유대인들을 피해 갈릴리에서 생활하시고 계셨습니다. 그 이유는 즉 유대인들이 예수님을 찾아 죽이려 했기 때문이죠. 그러던 중 이 초막절이 다가왔습니다.

초막절은 유대인들에게 매우 중요한 절기였습니다. 이것은 이스라엘이 출애굽 후 광야에서 하나님의 보살핌 가운데 40년동안 천막 생활을 했던 것을 기념합니다 또한, 한 해 동안 풍성히 추수한 수확에 감사하는 절기로서 추수감사절과 같은 맥락이라고 이해하시면 됩니다. 

Today's message begins with the phrase 'After this.' The 'after this' refers to the event of the feeding of the five thousand, which we studied yesterday. Chronologically, based on John 6:4, the feeding of the five thousand occurred around the time of Passover, which falls in March or April on the solar calendar. However, today's passage takes place near the Feast of Tabernacles, which is celebrated around September or October. Therefore, today's passage describes an event that took place about 5-7 months after the feeding of the five thousand.

Jesus was staying in Galilee to avoid the Jews, who were seeking to kill Him. During this time, the Feast of Tabernacles approached.

The Feast of Tabernacles was a very important festival for the Jews. It commemorated the 40 years the Israelites spent living in tents in the wilderness under God's care after the Exodus. It was also a time to give thanks for the abundant harvest of the year, much like Thanksgiving.

이토록 큰 절기였기 때문에 얼마나 많은 사람들이 예루살렘으로 모이겠습니까? 이 때 예수님의 형제들이 예수님께 말합니다. “당신이 행하는 일을 제자들도 보게 여기를 떠나 유대로 가소서 (3절).” 여기서 예수님의 형제들이란 쉽게 생각해서 마리아가 나은 예수님의 친형제들이라 볼 수 있습니다. 그러나 또 어떤 학자들은 사촌이나 다른 친적들이라 보기도 하는데요. 정확히 누구였나는 여기서 중요하지 않고, 다만 예수님과 가까운 사람들이 예수님을 향해 조롱섞인 말을 했다는 것입니다. 쉬운말성경을 살펴보면 “이런 데 숨어서 일하시면, 누가 형님을 알아보겠습니까? 어차피 이런 일을 할 바에는, 형님이 위대하시다는 사실을 세상에 증명해 보이란 말입니다 (7:4).” 마치 예수님이 유명세를 쫓아 기적을 행하시는 자로 전락시켜 버렸는데요. 전혀 예수님을 그리스도로 믿지 않는 태도를 보이고 있습니다.

이들의 말에서 어떤 다른 사건이 생각나십니까? 저는 예수님께서 광야에서 마귀에게 세 번 시험을 받으신 사건이 생각났습니다. 이 때도 사탄은 예수님께 “네가 만일 하나님의 아들이어든”하며 예수님에게 당신의 능력을 드러내보아라 하며 자존심을 건드렸죠. 다만 그 때는 사탄 마귀가 직접 나타나서 예수님을 시험하며 죄의 자리로 유혹했었는데, 이번에는 예수님의 가족들의 말을 통해서 이루어지고 있습니다.

그러자 예수님은 과거 광야에서와 마찬가지로 “내 때는 아직 이르지 아니하였다”하시며 네 자신을 드러내라는 요구를 거절하십니다.

Because this was such a significant festival, imagine how many people would have gathered in Jerusalem. At this time, Jesus' brothers said to Him, 'Leave here and go to Judea, so that Your disciples may see the works You are doing' (v. 3). Here, Jesus' brothers are understood to be His biological siblings born to Mary. However, some scholars suggest they might have been cousins or other relatives. While the exact identity of these brothers isn't crucial here, what matters is that those close to Jesus made remarks tinged with mockery.

In the Easy-to-Read Version, it says, 'If you want to be known, you cannot keep hiding like this. Show the world the great things you are doing' (John 7:4). Their words reduce Jesus to someone seeking fame through miracles, showing a complete lack of faith in Him as the Christ.

Does this remind you of another event? For me, it recalls the time when Jesus was tempted three times by the devil in the wilderness. At that time, Satan provoked Jesus by saying, 'If You are the Son of God,' urging Him to prove His power and appealing to His pride. In that case, Satan directly appeared to test and tempt Jesus into sin. Now, however, this test comes through the words of Jesus' family.

In response, Jesus, just as He did in the wilderness, rejects their demands, saying, 'My time has not yet come.'

왜냐하면 예수님은 오직 하나님의 계획 안에서 철저하게 순종하며, 당신이 세상 가운데에 드러나야 될 하나님의 때를 정확히 알고 계셨기 때문입니다. 전혀 형제들이 부추기는 유명세나 다른 사람들에게서 받는 인정에는 관심이 없으십니다. 그래서 예수님은 6절에서 형제들을 꼬집으며 말씀하십니다. “내 때는 아직 이르지 아니하였거니와 너희 때는 늘 준비되어 있느니라(6).” 완벽한 하나님의 때에 맞춰 행하시는 예수님과는 다르게 형제들은 언제든지 마음 내키는대로 본인들의 계획에 따라 행동하니 그들의 때는 항상 준비되어져 있을 수 밖에 없지요.

이렇게 신앙 생활을 하다보면 낙담이 되는 상황이 옵니다. 그리고 사탄은 우리의 약점을 정확히 알고 우리를 넘어뜨릴 기회를 호시탐탐 노리고 있는걸 느낍니다. 다른 그 누구도 아닌 우리가 사랑하고 가깝게 여기는 가족, 친척, 지인들로부터 말입니다.

Because Jesus perfectly obeyed God's plan, He knew precisely the timing when He was to be revealed to the world according to God's will. He had no interest in the fame His brothers were urging Him to pursue or in seeking recognition from others. Thus, in verse 6, Jesus pointedly tells His brothers, 'My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready' (v. 6). Unlike Jesus, who acted in perfect alignment with God's timing, His brothers acted according to their own plans and desires, so their time was always ready.

In our faith journey, we sometimes face discouraging situations. And we realize that Satan knows our weaknesses and eagerly waits for opportunities to make us stumble. Often, these challenges come not from strangers but from those closest to us—our family, relatives, and friends.

제가 신앙적으로 지금보다 더욱 미숙하고 어렸던, 지금부터 한 4년전 일입니다. 제가 평소에 많이 의지하며 친하게 지냈던 지인이 한 분 계셨는데요. 어느 한 날 제가 그 분께 제 평소 교회 나가는 스케쥴을 말씀드렸는데 그 얘기를 듣더니 이렇게 말씀하시는 겁니다. “아니 20대 아가씨가 뭐 그렇게 교회에서 많은 시간을 보내냐. 예쁘고 좋은 곳 가서 시간도 많이 보내고 해야지.” 이건 그 분의 관심과 사랑의 표현이었는데 듣고보니 마치 제가 교회에서 쓸 데 없이 시간 낭비를 한다는 듯이 들렸습니다. 괜히 맞는 말인 것 같고 속상하더라구요. 제 안에 잠재되어져 있는 욕구와 자기 연민을 일으키는 그러한 말이었죠. 여기서 이렇게 있을 게 아니라 이 젊음을 누리며 밖에서 나를 드러내는 그런 일을 해야 할 것 같았습니다. 이 때가 시기적으로 안 좋았던 것이 제가 신분적인 문제와 개인적인 여러 상황들로 한국으로 돌아가야 하나 고민하던 시기였습니다. 이 때는 또 제가 데이빗을 만날 줄 모르던 때 였습니다. 그러므로 조금만 탁 건들면 하나님의 나라며 사명이며 다 버리고 세상으로 넘어갈 사탄이 넘 볼 절호의 기회였죠.

About four years ago, when I was less mature and inexperienced in my faith compared to now, there was a close friend I relied on a lot. One day, I shared my regular church schedule with this person. After hearing about it, they said to me, 'Why does a young woman in her twenties spend so much time at church? You should be out enjoying yourself and spending time in nice places.' It was said out of care and affection, but it sounded to me like they were implying I was wasting my time at church. It upset me, and I started to think maybe they were right. Their words stirred up hidden desires and self-pity within me. It made me feel like I should be out in the world enjoying my youth and showcasing myself, rather than staying where I was.

What made this time particularly challenging was that I was already struggling with personal issues and considering whether I needed to return to Korea due to some legal and personal challenges. It was also before I met David. In this vulnerable season, Satan saw the perfect opportunity to tempt me, making me question my commitment to God's kingdom and my sense of calling. A small nudge could have pushed me to abandon everything and turn to the world.

근데 저에게 어떠한 하나님의 은혜가 임했냐면 분별이 되는겁니다. ‘아 이게 지금 사탄의 유혹이구나.’ 그래서 가볍게 흘려 듣고 넘길 수 있었습니다. 왜냐면 저는 교회 나오는게 좋았거든요. 사탄의 거짓말이었습니다. 그때 제가 고민하던 모든 문제들이 주님의 때에 다 해결된 줄로 믿습니다. 이 일로 제가 어떠한 교훈을 얻게 됐냐면 ‘내가 아무리 선한 의도로 말을 한다고 해도 이게 듣는 이의 상황에 따라 사탄의 도구로 사용될 수 있겠구나’ 와 ‘주님의 뜻과 때를 분별할 수 있는 것은 다 은혜구나’입니다. 세상의 눈으로 바라봤을 때 어리석고 지루할 지 몰라도, 여기 계신 여러분은 모두 주님의 계획 안에 속한 삶을 살 때 얼마나 감사하고 기쁘고 충만하지 다들 아시리라 믿습니다.

요즘 주님의 때를 기다리며 간절히 구하시는 기도 제목이 있으십니까? 그래서 우리는 더욱 성령 충만을 구해야 합니다. 성령 충만하여 어떠한 유혹이 다가와도 굳건히 하나님의 때를 기다릴 수 있어야 하겠습니다. 우리의 본이 되시는 예수님처럼 말입니다. 주님의 뜻과 때를 분별할 수 있는 지혜의 눈을 열어주시기를 구합시다. 그리하여 예수님의 형제들처럼 마음 내키는대로 자기들의 때에 준비되는 자가 아니라 하나님의 때에 준비되어져 행하는 성도님들 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 기도드립니다.

But what kind of grace did God grant me at that moment? He gave me discernment. I realized, ‘Ah, this is Satan's temptation.’ Because of this, I was able to brush it off and move on. Why? Because I genuinely enjoyed going to church. It was Satan’s lie. I believe that all the issues I was struggling with at the time were resolved in God’s perfect timing.

From this experience, I learned two important lessons: first, even if I speak with the best intentions, my words could still be used as a tool of Satan depending on the listener's situation; and second, the ability to discern God’s will and timing is entirely by His grace. Though it may seem foolish and dull through the eyes of the world, I believe all of you here understand how grateful, joyful, and fulfilling it is to live a life aligned with God’s plan.

Are you earnestly seeking a prayer topic while waiting for the Lord's timing these days? This is why we must seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit even more. By being filled with the Spirit, we can stand firm and patiently wait for God's timing, no matter what temptations may come our way, just as Jesus, our perfect example, did. Let us pray for God to open the eyes of wisdom so that we may discern His will and timing. In doing so, may we not be like Jesus' brothers, who acted according to their own timing, but rather like those who are prepared and act according to God's timing. In the name of the Lord, I pray that you will become such believers.
