18:1 이 일 후에 다른 천사가 하늘에서 내려 오는 것을 보니 큰 권세를 가졌는데 그의 영광으로 땅이 환하여지더라

18:2 힘찬 음성으로 외쳐 이르되 무너졌도다 무너졌도다 큰 성 바벨론이여 귀신의 처소와 각종 더러운 영이 모이는 곳과 각종 더럽고 가증한 새들이 모이는 곳이 되었도다

18:3 그 음행의 진노의 포도주로 말미암아 만국이 무너졌으며 또 땅의 왕들이 그와 더불어 음행하였으며 땅의 상인들도 그 사치의 세력으로 치부하였도다 하더라

[Lament Over Fallen Babylon]

1 After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven. He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor. 2 With a mighty voice he shouted:

“‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’

    She has become a dwelling for demons

and a haunt for every impure spirit,

    a haunt for every unclean bird,

    a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.

3 For all the nations have drunk

    the maddening wine of her adulteries.

The kings of the earth committed adultery with her,

    and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries.”

18:4 또 내가 들으니 하늘로부터 다른 음성이 나서 이르되 내 백성아, 거기서 나와 그의 죄에 참여하지 말고 그가 받을 재앙들을 받지 말라

18:5 그의 죄는 하늘에 사무쳤으며 하나님은 그의 불의한 일을 기억하신지라

18:6 그가 준 그대로 그에게 주고 그의 행위대로 갑절을 갚아 주고 그가 섞은 잔에도 갑절이나 섞어 그에게 주라

18:7 그가 얼마나 자기를 영화롭게 하였으며 사치하였든지 그만큼 고통과 애통함으로 갚아 주라 그가 마음에 말하기를 나는 여왕으로 앉은 자요 과부가 아니라 결단코 애통함을 당하지 아니하리라 하니

18:8 그러므로 하루 동안에 그 재앙들이 이르리니 곧 사망과 애통함과 흉년이라 그가 또한 불에 살라지리니 그를 심판하시는 주 하나님은 강하신 자이심이라

[Warning to Escape Babylon’s Judgment]

4 Then I heard another voice from heaven say:

“‘Come out of her, my people,’

    so that you will not share in her sins,

    so that you will not receive any of her plagues;

5 for her sins are piled up to heaven,

    and God has remembered her crimes.

6 Give back to her as she has given;

    pay her back double for what she has done.

    Pour her a double portion from her own cup.

7 Give her as much torment and grief

    as the glory and luxury she gave herself.

In her heart she boasts,

    ‘I sit enthroned as queen.

I am not a widow;

    I will never mourn.’

8 Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her:

    death, mourning and famine.

She will be consumed by fire,

    for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.

지난 16일(월) 오전 11시쯤 위스콘신주의 주도 매디슨에 있는 어번던트 라이프 크리스천스쿨 ABUNDANT LIFE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL에서 이 학교 학생 나탈리 럽나우(15)가 교실에서 권총을 발사하였습니다.

나탈리는 이날 정시에 등교 후 약 3시간 뒤 여러 학년 학생이 모여 있는 교실에서 이 같은 범행을 저질렀습니다. 이번 총격으로 10대 학생 한 명과 교사 한 명이 숨졌고, 범인 스스로도 자살했습니다. 부상자는 총 6명으로 이중 2명은 생명이 위독한 상태라고 경찰은 밝혔습니다. 정확한 범행 동기는 밝혀지지 않았지만, 사건 직전에 남긴 성명문과 그 학생이 트렌스젠더였다는 사실에 사람들은 주목하고 있습니다.

2024년에만 미국 총기 사건이 360개에 달한다고 합니다. 하루에 한 건의 총격사고가 일어난 것입니다.

여전히 10대들과 어린이들 사망 원인의 1위가 총기사고라고 하니 참으로 안타까울 뿐입니다. 총만 없으면 될 것 같지만, 총이 없는 한국을 보면 그렇지도 않습니다. 좀 비관적인 생각이지만, 아마도 주님이 다시 오시기 전에는 이 바벨론의 악순환이 끝날 것 같지는 않습니다. 

At around 11 a.m. on Monday, December 16, in Madison, Wisconsin, a student named Natalie Rupnow (15) at Abundant Life Christian School opened fire in a classroom.

After attending school on time, Natalie carried out this crime about three hours later in a classroom with students from multiple grades present. The shooting resulted in the deaths of one teenage student and one teacher, while the perpetrator also took her own life. Six people were injured, with two in critical condition, according to police reports.

The exact motive for the crime has not been revealed, but attention is being drawn to a statement left by the student before the incident and the fact that she was transgender.

There have been as many as 360 gun incidents in the U.S. in 2024 alone—essentially one shooting per day.

It is deeply saddening that the leading cause of death for teenagers and children continues to be gun-related incidents. While it may seem that eliminating guns would solve the problem, observing gun-free countries like South Korea shows that it is not so simple. It may be a pessimistic outlook, but it feels as though this vicious cycle of Babylon will not end until the Lord returns.

큰 성 바벨론의 미래 (1~3절)

계시록 18장은 큰 성으로서 바벨론의 미래에 대한 예언을 기록합니다. 음녀 바벨론은 그 음행에 주로 초점을 두었다면, 큰 성 바벨론은 로마 제국의 제도적이고 사회적인 부분에 초점을 맞춘 예언입니다.

앞선 17장 16~18절에 기록된 예언의 자세한 버전이라 할 수 있습니다.

큰 권세를 가진 다른 천사가 하늘로부터 내려옵니다. 그 천사의 영광 때문에 땅이 환하게 비칩니다.

본 장면은 에스겔 선지자가 본 장면을 반영합니다.

이스라엘 하나님의 영광이 동쪽에서부터 오는데

하나님의 음성이 많은 물 소리 같고 땅은 그 영광으로 말미암아 빛나니(겔 43:2)

The Future of the Great City, Babylon (Verses 1-3)

Revelation 18 records prophecies about the future of the great city, Babylon. While the "harlot Babylon" focuses on immoral acts, the "great city Babylon" highlights the institutional and social aspects of the Roman Empire.

This prophecy is a more detailed version of what was recorded in Revelation 17:16-18.

Another angel with great authority descends from heaven, and the earth is illuminated by the angel's glory. This scene reflects what the prophet Ezekiel witnessed:

빛나는 천사는 하나님의 명령을 선포합니다. 그것은 큰 성 바벨론의 미래입니다.

무너졌도다 무너졌도다(2a) 부정과거시제를 사용하여 두 번을 반복한 것은 심판의 확정성을 나타냅니다.

요한의 시대에는 아직 로마가 건재했지만, 시간을 초월하신 하나님의 관점에서는 바벨론 로마는 이미 멸망한 성입니다.

바벨론의 형편은 이제 귀신의 처소, 곧 귀신의 소굴이 되었습니다. 또한 각종 더러운 영이 모이고, 더럽고 가증한 새들이 모이는 악의 소굴이 되었습니다. 아니 이미 그랬기 때문에 멸망을 받는 것입니다. 

그리스, 로마에는 판테온 Πάνθειον 신전이 있습니다. 한국어로는 범신전(汎神殿), 만신전(萬神殿)으로 번역합니다. 쉽게 설명하면 온갖 귀신, 잡신들이 다 모이는 신전이라는 의미입니다.

그런데 사람들은 아파트 이름을 OO판테온이라고 짓습니다. 온갖 귀신들과 함께 살고 싶다는 것인지…

귀신들은 항상 더럽고, 악하고, 상처 입은 곳을 찾아 다닙니다. 로마가 그런 곳이었습니다. 지금 서구화된 도시들도 다르지 않습니다. 우리는 바벨론 한 가운데 살고 있습니다.

천사는 바벨론이 심판을 받는 이유에 대해서 알려줍니다(3). 왕들이 음녀 바벨론과 음행하여, 권력을 추구하였고, 상인들은 그들의 권력을 등에 업고 부를 쌓았습니다. 돈, 섹스, 권력… 이것이 정확히 바벨론을 상징하는 단어들입니다.

The shining angel proclaims God's command: the future of the great city, Babylon.

"Fallen, fallen is Babylon the Great!" (Revelation 18:2)

The phrase "fallen, fallen" is repeated, using the aorist tense, to emphasize the certainty of the judgment.

During John's time, Rome was still standing, but from God's timeless perspective, Babylon (Rome) had already fallen.

The state of Babylon is described as a dwelling place for demons, a haunt for every impure spirit, and a lair for every unclean and detestable bird. These features indicate that Babylon had already become a hub of wickedness, which is why it faced judgment.

In Greece and Rome, there were structures called Pantheons (Πάνθειον), which can be translated into Korean as 범신전 (Temple of All Gods) or 만신전 (Temple of Ten Thousand Gods). Essentially, these were temples where all kinds of spirits and gods were worshiped.

However, some people today name apartment complexes using the term "Pantheon," which raises the question of whether they wish to live among all these spirits.

Demons are always drawn to what is filthy, evil, and broken. Rome embodied these qualities, and modern Westernized cities are no different. We live right in the middle of Babylon.

The angel explains the reason for Babylon's judgment (verse 3). The kings of the earth committed adultery with the harlot Babylon, pursuing power. Merchants grew wealthy by taking advantage of that power. Power, wealth, and indulgence—these are the words that perfectly symbolize Babylon.

하나님 백성이 가져야 할 경각심 (4~8절)

이제 하늘에서 음성이 들립니다. 하나님의 백성들에게 전해지는 3가지 명령입니다.

먼저는 거기, 곧 바벨론에서 나오라 입니다. 다음은 그의 죄에 참여하지 말라 입니다.

마지막으로 그리하여 그들이 받을 재앙을 받지 말라 입니다(4).  

이 명령은 물리적으로 로마에 살지 말라는 명령은 아닙니다. 요한계시록의 수신자들인 일곱 초대교회는 로마에서 멀리 떨어진 소아시아 지역에 위치했습니다. 그러므로 이 명령은 영적인 명령입니다. 황제/우상숭배와 사치, 그리고 음행에서 떠나라는 의미입니다.

주석가 바클레이 W. Barclay는 이 명령을 성경에 기록된 “떠나가라”는 하나님의 명령과 연결하여 해석했습니다. 갈대아 우르를 떠난 아브라함, 소돔을 떠난 롯, 그리고 바울이 말한,

너희는 유혹의 욕심을 따라 썩어져 가는 구습을 따르는 옛 사람을 벗어 버리고 오직 너희의 심령이 새롭게 되어 하나님을 따라 의와 진리의 거룩함으로 지으심을 받은 새 사람을 입으라 (엡 4:22~24)

The Call for God's People to Be Alert (Verses 4-8)

A voice from heaven calls out with three commands for God's people:

1. "Come out of her, my people!"

2. "Do not share in her sins!"

3. "Do not receive her plagues!"

This command is not a physical instruction to leave Rome. The seven churches, the original recipients of Revelation, were located in Asia Minor, far from Rome. Therefore, the command is spiritual. It is a call to flee from emperor worship, idolatry, luxury, and immorality.

Commentator William Barclay connects this command to other calls from God in Scripture to "come out." For example, Abraham was called to leave Ur of the Chaldeans, Lot was called to flee Sodom, and Paul instructed believers:

가 본문에서 천사가 말하는 의미입니다.

하나님의 백성이 바벨론에서 떠나야 하는 이유는 이어서 등장하는 하나님의 속성 때문입니다.

첫번째로 하나님은 인간의 불의한 행동을 기억하시는 분입니다(5).

이것은 하나님의 전지성과 연관되어 있습니다. 모든 것을 다 아시는 하나님 앞에 숨길 수 없습니다.

둘째로 하나님은 인간의 불의한 행동을 갑절로 갚으시는 분입니다(6).

갑절로 갚으시는 이유는 율법(출 22:4, 7, 9)이 도둑질한 자에게 그렇게 요구하기 때문입니다.

바벨론의 가장 큰 죄악은 교만입니다. 스스로를 영화롭게 하고, 스스로를 치장하는데 사치했습니다. 자신에게는 결코 슬픈 일이 벌어지지 않을 것이라고 건방을 떨었습니다(7).

마지막으로 하나님은 인간의 불의한 행동을 심판하시는 분입니다(8)

하나님은 교만하여 건방을 떠는 바벨론에게 사망과 애통함과 흉년과 화염으로 심판하십니다. 그것도 단 하루에 이 모든 재앙이 임할 것입니다. 이것은 신속하고 급작스러운 하나님의 심판을 상징합니다.

심판하시는 하나님은 전능하십니다. 전능하지 않으면 결코 바베론을 심판할 수 없습니다.

모든 것을 기억하시고, 갚으시고, 심판하시는 전능자 하나님이 우리의 왕이요, 아버지이십니다. 그래서 우리는 평안합니다. 하나님의 백성으로 바벨론에서 나와 그들의 죄(우상숭배, 사치, 음행), 곧 돈, 섹스, 권력에 참여하지 않는 자녀가 되기를 간절하게 원합니다.

The angel explains the reasons why God's people must leave Babylon. These reasons are based on God's character and actions:

1. God remembers humanity's unrighteous deeds (verse 5).

   • This relates to God's omniscience. Nothing can be hidden from God, who knows all things.

2. God repays unrighteous deeds twofold (verse 6).

   • The concept of double repayment comes from the Law (Exodus 22:4, 7, 9), where a thief is required to pay back double.

3. God judges human arrogance and pride (verse 7).

   • Babylon's greatest sin is arrogance. It glorifies itself, lives in luxury, and boasts that no sorrow will ever come to it.

4. God delivers swift and sudden judgment (verse 8).

   • Death, mourning, famine, and fire will all come upon Babylon in a single day. This symbolizes the rapid and unexpected nature of God's judgment.

God is able to bring judgment on Babylon because He is omnipotent. Without absolute power, He could not bring Babylon to justice.

God is the One who remembers all things, repays all things, and judges all things. He is our King and Father, and therefore, we have peace.

We earnestly desire to be the children of God who come out of Babylon, do not partake in its sins (idolatry, luxury, and immorality), and do not get swept up in the pursuit of wealth, indulgence, and power.
