7 Then the angel said to me: “Why are you astonished? I will explain to you the mystery of the woman and of the beast she rides, which has the seven heads and ten horns. 8 The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and yet will come up out of the Abyss and go to its destruction. The inhabitants of the earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the creation of the world will be astonished when they see the beast, because it once was, now is not, and yet will come.
17:9 지혜 있는 뜻이 여기 있으니 그 일곱 머리는 여자가 앉은 일곱 산이요
17:10 또 일곱 왕이라 다섯은 망하였고 하나는 있고 다른 하나는 아직 이르지 아니하였으나 이르면 반드시 잠시 동안 머무르리라

9 “This calls for a mind with wisdom. The seven heads are seven hills on which the woman sits. 10 They are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; but when he does come, he must remain for only a little while. 11 The beast who once was, and now is not, is an eighth king. He belongs to the seven and is going to his destruction.
17:12 네가 보던 열 뿔은 열 왕이니 아직 나라를 얻지 못하였으나 다만 짐승과 더불어 임금처럼 한동안 권세를 받으리라
17:13 그들이 한 뜻을 가지고 자기의 능력과 권세를 짐승에게 주더라
17:14 그들이 어린 양과 더불어 싸우려니와 어린 양은 만주의 주시오 만왕의 왕이시므로 그들을 이기실 터이요 또 그와 함께 있는 자들 곧 부르심을 받고 택하심을 받은 진실한 자들도 이기리로다
12 “The ten horns you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but who for one hour will receive authority as kings along with the beast. 13 They have one purpose and will give their power and authority to the beast. 14 They will wage war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph over them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings—and with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers.”
17:15 또 천사가 내게 말하된 네가 본 바 음녀가 앉아 있는 물은 백성과 무리와 열국과 방언들이니라
17:16 네가 본 바 이 열 뿔과 짐승은 음녀를 미워하여 망하게 하고 벌거벗게 하고 그의 살을 먹고 불로 아주 사르리라
17:17 이는 하나님이 자기 뜻대로 할 마음을 그들에게 주사 한 뜻을 이루게 하시고 그들의 나라를 그 짐승에게 주게 하시되 하나님의 말씀이 응하기까지 하심이라
17:18 또 네가 본 그 여자는 땅의 왕들을 다스리는 큰 성이라 하더라
15 Then the angel said to me, “The waters you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages. 16 The beast and the ten horns you saw will hate the prostitute. They will bring her to ruin and leave her naked; they will eat her flesh and burn her with fire. 17 For God has put it into their hearts to accomplish his purpose by agreeing to hand over to the beast their royal authority, until God’s words are fulfilled. 18 The woman you saw is the great city that rules over the kings of the earth.”
하나님께서는 밧모섬에 갇혀 있는 요한에게 각 교회들에게 전할 계시를 말씀하십니다. 그 계시의 말씀을 기록한 것이 요한계시록입니다. 그런데 하나님은 요한에게 당신 자신을 다음과 같이 소개합니다.
주 하나님이 이르시되 나는 알파와 오메가라
이제도 있고 전에도 있었고 장차 올 자요 전능한 자라 하시더라 (계 1:8)
시간과 공간을 초월한 영원성은 인간의 속성과 공유되지 않은 비공유적인 하나님의 속성 중 하나입니다.
영원하시고 전능하신 변함없이 신실하신 하나님이시기에 우리에게 큰 힘과 위로가 됩니다.
그런데 오늘 본문에서 천사가 짐승을 타고 있는 음녀를 보며 놀라는 요한에게 그들의 비밀을 알려주는데, 그들은 전에 있었다가 지금은 없으나 장차 무저갱으로부터 올라와 멸망으로 들어갈 자(8)라는 것입니다.
사탄은 패러디, 곧 거짓의 아비(요 8:44)입니다. 예수님의 부활을 패러디 하지만, 예수님의 부활과는 전혀 다릅니다. 전에 있었다가 지금은 없고 장차 나타나 멸망으로 들어갈 자 라는 것은 무슨 의미일까요?
God spoke to John, who was imprisoned on the island of Patmos, about revelations to be conveyed to the churches. These revelations were recorded as the Book of Revelation.
In it, God introduces Himself as follows:
"The Lord God says, 'I am the Alpha and the Omega—the One who is, who was, and who is to come—the Almighty.'" (Revelation 1:8)
God’s eternal nature, transcending time and space, is one of His incommunicable attributes, not shared with human beings. His eternal, unchanging, and faithful nature is a great source of strength and comfort to us.
In today’s passage, the angel reveals a mystery to John, who is astonished at the sight of the prostitute riding the beast. These are described as "once was, now is not, and yet will come up out of the Abyss and go to its destruction (v. 8).
Satan is the father of lies (John 8:44) and a master of parody. He tries to imitate Christ’s resurrection, but it is entirely different. What does it mean when it says, “once was, now is not, and yet will come”?
짐승의 비밀과 어린양의 승리 (7~14절)
큰 음녀, 곧 여자는 로마제국을 상징합니다. 그리고 일곱 머리와 열 뿔을 가진 짐승은 적그리스도인 로마의 네로 황제를 의미합니다. 그런데 네로는 요한이 계시를 받던 때에는 이미 사망했습니다. 그래서 전에는 있었다가 지금은 없는 것입니다. 요한이 계시를 받던 시기에 황제는 도미티아누스(81~96년) 입니다.
그렇다면 장차 무저갱에서 다시 올라온다는 말의 의미는 당시 유행했던 네로의 부활신화가 진짜로 이루어질 것이라는 의미일까요? 그렇지는 않습니다. 요한계시록을 시작하면서 말씀드렸듯이, 계시록은 과거, 현재, 그리고 미래의 관점을 동시에 가지고 읽어야 합니다.
이러한 역사관이 나선형 역사관이라고 말씀드렸습니다. 그러니까 과거에 네로가 있었고, 지금(요한의 시대)은 도미티아누스가 있으며, 장차 누구인지는 모르지만 네로와 비슷한 마지막 적그스리스도가 나타날 것이라는 의미입니다. 그리고 구원의 생명책에서 제외된 사람들은 그를 보며 놀라워하며 그를 섬길 것입니다(8).
지혜 있는 뜻이 여기 있으니(9a) 영적 통찰력과 분별력을 가지고 보아야 하나님의 계시의 참 의미를 알 수 있다는 의미입니다. 천사가 요한이 본 환상에 대해서 해석해 줍니다.
여자가 앉은 일곱 산인 짐승의 일곱 머리는 로마제국의 특출한 일곱 황제를 상징하는 것입니다.
그 중에 다섯 황제는 이미 망하였습니다(9). 곧 죽었습니다. 학자들은 이들을 칼리큘라, 클라우디우스, 네로, 베스파시아누스, 티투스로 봅니다. 하나는 있다 라는 것은 요한의 때 황제인 도미티아누스를 가리킵니다. 그리고 잠시 머물 일곱 번째 황제는 네르바(96~98년)를 의미합니다.
The Mystery of the Beast and the Victory of the Lamb (Verses 7–14)
The great prostitute, the woman, symbolizes the Roman Empire. The beast with seven heads and ten horns represents the Antichrist, specifically Emperor Nero of Rome. Nero had already died by the time John received his revelations. Thus, he “once was, now is not.” During John’s time, the emperor was Domitian (81–96 AD).
What, then, does it mean that the beast will ascend from the Abyss? Does it suggest the fulfillment of the contemporary legend of Nero’s resurrection? Not necessarily. As I’ve mentioned before, the Book of Revelation should be read with a simultaneous view of the past, present, and future—a perspective I’ve called the “spiral view” of history.
In this view, Nero existed in the past, Domitian ruled during John’s time, and a final Antichrist, akin to Nero, will emerge in the future. Those not written in the Book of Life will marvel at and worship this figure (v. 8).
The angel interprets John’s vision, providing insight into the symbolism. The seven hills the woman sits upon represent Rome’s emperors.
Five emperors had fallen (v. 9)—scholars often identify them as Caligula, Claudius, Nero, Vespasian, and Titus. “One is” refers to the current emperor, Domitian, and the seventh, who will remain only briefly, refers to Nerva (96–98 AD).
그리고 전에 있었다가 지금은 사라졌지만 다시 나타날 마지막 여덟 번째 왕이 네로로 상징되는 마지막 적그리스도이고, 그의 운명은 이미 멸망으로 들어갈 자(8b)로 정해져 있습니다.
물론 이러한 해석에 대해서 반대하는 학자들도 있습니다. 여러 해석들이 있지만, 아마도 실제 벌어진 사건으로 해석하자면 이러한 해석이 어느 정도 설득력이 있다고 생각합니다. 동시에 본문은 영적이고 상징적으로 해석해야 합니다. 앞서 말한 것처럼 계시록은 과거, 현재, 그리고 미래적으로 해석해야 합니다.
천사는 요한에게 짐승이 가진 열개의 뿔에 대해서 설명합니다. 그것을 짐승에게 협조하는 권력들입니다. 역사적으로 해석하자면, 로마에게 협조한 헤롯과 같은 분봉왕이라 할 수 있습니다. 한편 어떤 학자들은 유럽연합인 EU가 열 뿔이라고 해석합니다. 그러한 해석은 좀 무리다 싶습니다.
로마제국과 황제, 그리고 그들을 돕는 하수인들은 어린양과 더불어 전쟁합니다. 하지만 어린양은 만주의 주시요(퀴로오스 퀴리온), 만왕의 왕(바실류스 바실레온)입니다. 당연히 그들은 어린양에게 패합니다.
그러므로 어린양과 함께 있는 자들, 곧 부르심을 받고 택하심을 받은 진실한 자들도 승리합니다(14).
음녀와 짐승, 그리고 생명책에 기록되지 못한 자들의 운명과 어린양과 그 진실한 자들의 운명이 극명하게 대조됩니다. 패배와 승리, 멸망과 영생입니다.
The eighth king, symbolized by Nero, represents the ultimate Antichrist, whose fate is already sealed as one destined for destruction (v. 8b).
While there are varying interpretations, this reading aligns well with historical events and makes a compelling case. At the same time, the passage should also be interpreted spiritually and symbolically. As previously noted, Revelation should be read with an eye to the past, present, and future.
The angel also explains the ten horns of the beast, which represent powers that cooperate with the beast. Historically, these might include client kings like Herod who collaborated with Rome. Some scholars interpret the ten horns as the European Union, though this interpretation seems far-fetched.
The Roman Empire, its emperors, and their collaborators war against the Lamb. However, the Lamb is “Lord of lords” (Kyrios kyriōn) and “King of kings” (Basileus basileōn). Naturally, they will be defeated.
Those who are with the Lamb—the called, chosen, and faithful—will also triumph (v. 14).
The destinies of the prostitute, the beast, and those not recorded in the Book of Life sharply contrast with the Lamb and His faithful followers: defeat and destruction versus victory and eternal life.
많은 물 위에 앉은 큰 음녀의 운명 (15~18절)
천사는 요한이 앞서 보았던 많은 물 위에 앉은 큰 음녀에 대해서 설명해줍니다. 많은 물은 백성과 무리와 열국과 방언들입니다. 이것은 음녀의 유혹을 받고 그녀의 지배를 받은 모든 세상을 의미합니다.
어제 말한 것처럼 세상의 모든 문명이자 세상 사람들입니다.
재미있는 것은 16절입니다. 갑자기 음녀와 짐승이 싸웁니다. 그리고는 짐승과 열 뿔이 음녀를 망하게 하고, 벌거벗기고, 그의 살을 먹고, 불로 사릅니다. 도대체 이것은 무엇을 의미하는 것일까요?
자중지란입니다. 황제와 제국이 서로를 잡아먹으려는 것입니다. 얼마전 대한민국에 일어난 계엄령 사태가 비슷한 구조로 보입니다. 음녀와 짐승 모두 세상에 속한 자들입니다. 그리고 하나님은 그들이 하고 싶은 대로 내버려 두셔서, 짐승이 패권을 차지하게 하십니다. 하지만 걱정하지 않아도 되는 것은 모든 것이 철저하게 하나님의 손 안에서 움직이고 있기 때문입니다.
The Fate of the Great Prostitute Sitting on Many Waters (Verses 15–18)
The angel explains that the great prostitute, seen sitting on many waters, symbolizes all the people, multitudes, nations, and languages influenced by her seduction.
As mentioned yesterday, this refers to all of civilization and humanity under worldly influence.
Verse 16 presents an intriguing twist: the prostitute and the beast turn on each other. The beast and its ten horns will hate the prostitute, strip her naked, eat her flesh, and burn her with fire. What does this mean?
This is infighting—empires and rulers devouring one another. A similar dynamic was seen in the recent coup situation in South Korea. Both the prostitute and the beast belong to the world, and God allows them to act on their desires, ultimately granting dominance to the beast. But there’s no need for concern, as everything operates firmly under God’s control.
짐승과 제국, 그리고 그의 하수인들은 끊임없이 악을 위해 손을 잡았다가, 자신들의 이해 관계에 의해 배신을 하고 서로를 죽입니다. 결국 마지막에는 강력한 적그리스도가 네로처럼 패권을 장악할 것입니다.
하지만 걱정할 필요가 없는 것은 만군의 주요, 만왕의 왕이신 어린양이 우리의 대장이십니다.
걱정해야 할 것은 내가 지금 줄을 잘 서있는가 하는 문제입니다.
화려하고, 찬란하고, 말초신경을 자극하는 짐승과 음녀의 줄인지, 아니면 진실한 어린양의 줄인지…
The beast, the empire, and its collaborators constantly form alliances for evil, only to betray and destroy one another. In the end, a powerful Antichrist, akin to Nero, will seize control.
However, we need not fear, for the Lamb, the “Lord of Hosts” and “King of kings,” leads us.
What we must worry about is whether we are aligned with the right side.
Are we drawn to the glittering, seductive allure of the beast and the prostitute?
Or are we faithfully standing with the Lamb?
