[The Woman and the Dragon]
1 A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. 2 She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth. 3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on its heads. 4 Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child the moment he was born. 5 She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.” And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne. 6 The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.

7 Then war broke out in heaven. 13 When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. 14 The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time, out of the serpent’s reach. 15 Then from his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. 16 But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring—those who keep God’s commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.

필립 얀시는 젊은 시절 교회가 배제의 복음을 전하고 율법주의에 빠져 사람을 정죄하는 것에 염증을 느껴 교회를 떠났습니다. 화려한 젊은 시절을 교회 밖에서 보낸 그가 다시 교회를 찾게 되는 감동적인 이야기가 그의 책 교회, 나의 고민 나의 사랑 Church, why bother? 에 잘 표현되어 있습니다.
저는 요즘 요한계시록을 보면서 새로운 발견을 합니다. 요한계시록은 묵시문학으로 분류됩니다. 그리고 종말론에 대한 가르침으로 해석합니다. 그런데 요즘 드는 생각은 요한계시록은 다분히 교회론적이라는 사실입니다. 이 땅의 교회는 끊임없이 사탄과 전쟁하는 불완전한 공동체입니다. 그래서 때로는 실망도 하고, 아픔도 겪고, 다툼도 있습니다. 김집사와 이권사 사이에 벌어지는 일 같지만, 사실은 보이지 않는 영적인 전쟁입니다.
Discipleship Class Reading Assignment
In the discipleship class, there is a reading assignment where participants are encouraged to read one recommended book per month and submit a one-page or half-page book review. One of the books that has received positive feedback from disciples is What's So Amazing About Grace? by Philip Yancey, a renowned evangelical intellectual and former editor-in-chief of the influential Christian magazine Christianity Today.
Philip Yancey shares his personal journey in his book Church: Why Bother?, describing how he left the church in his youth after being disillusioned by its legalism and judgmental attitudes. Later, after living a life away from the church, he was deeply moved to return, and his story offers a profound reflection on faith and community.
New Insights from Revelation
Recently, as I study the Book of Revelation, I have gained fresh insights. Revelation is typically classified as apocalyptic literature and often interpreted as a teaching on eschatology (the study of the end times). However, I am beginning to see it more as ecclesiological in nature—a reflection on the Church. The Church on earth is an imperfect community constantly engaged in spiritual warfare with Satan. This is why the Church sometimes experiences disappointment, pain, and conflict. While these struggles may seem like mere human disagreements (like those between Deacon Kim and Deaconess Lee), they are, in reality, manifestations of unseen spiritual warfare.
여자와 용의 전쟁 (1~6절)
11장에서 일곱 인, 일곱 나팔 재앙과 그 사이 삽입된 장면이 마무리되었습니다. 이제 마지막 재앙인 7대접 재앙이 나와야 하는 순서입니다. 하지만 12~14장은 전혀 다른 환상의 계시를 기록하고 있습니다. 왜 그런 걸까요? 잘 모르겠습니다. 하지만 본문을 해석하면서 느끼는 분명한 사실은 재앙의 시대에 교회를 향한 분명한 응원과 권면이 있다는 것입니다. 그래서 이 부분의 키워드는 영적전투 입니다.
일곱 인의 계시는 승리를 확신하라는 교훈을, 일곱 나팔 재앙의 계시는 마지막까지 사명을 완수하라는 교훈을, 그리고 오늘부터 시작하는 용과 두 짐승에 관한 계시는 끝까지 싸우라! 싸우라! 싸우라! 는 교훈을 줍니다.
해를 옷 입고, 달을 신고, 머리에 열 두 별의 관을 쓴 여인(1)은 누구일까요?
카톨릭은 마리아라고 우깁니다. 하지만 이 여인은 구약과 신약의 교회(성도)를 상징합니다.
교회는 하나님이 보시기에 해와 달과 별로 치장한 아름다운 존재입니다.
이 여인이 잉태하여 아이를 낳습니다. 그 아이는 누구일까요?? 아이에 대해 다음과 같이 설명합니다.
The War Between the Woman and the Dragon (Verses 1–6)
Chapter 11 concluded with the seven seals and seven trumpet judgments, setting the stage for the final judgment of the seven bowls. However, before the bowls are introduced, chapters 12–14 shift focus to a completely different vision. Why? The reason is not explicitly stated, but one thing becomes clear—the Church is given encouragement and exhortation during this period of tribulation.
The key theme in this section is spiritual warfare.
The seven seals teach the Church to have confidence in victory.
The seven trumpets call the Church to fulfill its mission until the end.
The vision of the dragon and the two beasts urges the Church to "Fight! Fight! Fight to the end!"
The woman described in verse 1 is "clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and a crown of twelve stars on her head." Some in the Catholic Church interpret this woman as Mary. However, she symbolizes the Church—both the Old Testament and New Testament communities of God’s people. In God's eyes, the Church is adorned with the sun, moon, and stars, a beautiful and glorious figure.
장차 철장으로 만국을 다스릴 남자라 그 아이를 하나님 앞과 그 보좌 앞으로 올려가더라(5)
이 설명은 분명히 예수 그리스도를 의미합니다. 그리고 간략하게 부활 후 승천한 장면까지 묘사합니다.
그런데 하늘에서 또 다른 이적이 벌어지는데, 그것은 한 큰 붉은 용이 해산하려는 여자 앞에서 여인이 해산하면 그 남자 아이를 삼키려고 기다리는 것입니다. 이 붉은 용은 왕관을 쓴 머리가 일곱이고 뿔이 열 개입니다. 역사적인 인물로는 아기 예수를 죽이려 했던 헤롯 대왕을 묘사한 것입니다.
꼬리로 하늘의 별 삼분의 일을 끌어다가 땅에 던졌다(4a)는 표현은 여러가지로 해석됩니다.
하지만 천사였던 루시퍼가 타락하여 사탄이 되면서 그를 따르던 부하 천사들도 함께 타락한 것을 묘사하는 것으로 해석하는 것이 가장 타당해 보입니다.
아기 예수를 해하려던 용의 계획이 수포로 돌아갑니다. 이제 대신 여자(교회)를 공격합니다.
그러나 하나님은 예비하신 광야(보호와 훈련)에서 1260일 동안 여인을 보호하고 양육하십니다.
이미 11장에서 보았던 박해의 기간에 완전하게 보호하심에 대한 상징입니다. 지금까지 교회는 완전하게 보호하심을 받았습니다.
The woman is pregnant and gives birth to a child. Who is this child? Verse 5 explains:
"She gave birth to a son, a male child, who 'will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.' And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne."
This is a clear reference to Jesus Christ, even summarizing His resurrection and ascension.
Then another sign appears—a great red dragon with seven heads and ten horns. The dragon waits to devour the child as soon as it is born. The dragon symbolizes Satan, and historically, King Herod, who sought to kill baby Jesus, serves as a human representation of this attack.
The dragon's tail sweeps a third of the stars from heaven and hurls them to earth (verse 4a). This is often interpreted as a reference to the fall of Lucifer (Satan) and the angels who rebelled with him.
Though the dragon seeks to destroy the child, the plan fails as the child is caught up to God's throne. Enraged, the dragon turns to attack the woman (the Church). But God provides a place of refuge for her in the wilderness for 1,260 days—a symbolic period representing protection and spiritual nourishment during persecution. This recalls the protection experienced by the early Church during its time of persecution.
하늘 전쟁 (7~12절)
장면이 하늘로 바뀝니다. 1~6절이 땅에서 목격한 사건이라면, 7~12절은 동일한 사건을 하늘에서 본 시각으로 묘사합니다. 용(사탄, 루시퍼)과 미가엘이 서로의 부하들을 데리고 전쟁을 벌입니다. 시기적으로 언제인지 모릅니다. 하지만 성경을 참조할 때 아마도 태초 전에 하늘에서 벌어진 사건으로 보입니다.
그들은 패하고 땅으로 쫓겨납니다. 9~10절은 천사장이었던 루시퍼가 사탄이 되어 추방되는 장면입니다.
그들이 땅에서 아무리 여인(교회)을 공격해도 이미 천상에서 패한 자들입니다. 또한 예수 그리스도의 십자가와 부활 사건으로 사탄의 머리는 깨졌습니다. 그래서 천상에서는 참소하는 자가 추방된 것에 대해 즐거워합니다(12a). 사탄의 별명은 참소하는 자입니다.
본문은 참소하는 자를 이길 수 있는 방법을 소개합니다. 그것은 어린양의 피와 능력, 증언하는 말씀, 그리고 죽기까지 생명을 아끼지 않는 헌신입니다. 이미 승리하여 천상에 거하는 자들은 즐거워합니다. 하지만 땅과 바다는 화가 있습니다! 조심해야 합니다! 마지막 발악을 하러 사탄이 내려갔기 때문입니다(12).
War in Heaven (Verses 7–12)
The scene shifts from earth to heaven. While verses 1–6 describe events seen from an earthly perspective, verses 7–12 show the same events from a heavenly perspective. The archangel Michael and his angels wage war against the dragon (Satan) and his angels.
When did this happen? While the exact timing is not clear, it likely refers to an event that took place before the creation of the world, as Scripture suggests. Satan and his followers are defeated and cast down to earth.
Verses 9–10 depict the fall of Lucifer, the former archangel who became Satan:
"The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him."
Though Satan continues to attack the Church, he is a defeated enemy. Christ's crucifixion and resurrection dealt a fatal blow to Satan, and his accusations against God's people were silenced.
The text provides a strategy for overcoming Satan:
The blood of the Lamb (Jesus' sacrifice)
The word of their testimony (bold witness)
Not loving their lives to the point of death (sacrificial commitment)
Because Satan has been cast out of heaven, the heavenly hosts rejoice (verse 12a). But for those on earth, it is a warning:
"But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short."
This marks the beginning of Satan's "last stand," as he knows his time is limited.
다시 땅으로 (13~17절)
다시 장면은 땅입니다. 하늘 전쟁의 승리를 보여주고 땅을 보여주는 것이 이미 이긴 전쟁임을 보여주며 영적인 전쟁을 하는 교회들을 격려하는 것입니다. 앞부분(1~6절)은 예수님 생애를 중심으로 사탄의 공격을 묘사했다면, 이제는 그 후에 교회에 대한 사탄의 공격을 묘사합니다. 한 때 두 때 반 때 역시 정해진 기간의 고난입니다. 이것은 초대교회가 공인 받기까지 핍박을 받았던 시기를 나타냅니다.
하지만 하나님은 교회를 특별한 능력(독수리 날개)으로 지키고 보호하셨습니다. 또한 뱀(용)은 물로서 공격하지만 땅이 입을 벌려 용이 토해낸 물을 삼킵니다. 더욱 화가 난 용은 여자의 남은 자손(17)을 더 집요하고 조직적으로 공격하려고 준비합니다.
사탄은 먼저 예수를 죽이려 했습니다. 실패하자, 여자(교회)를 죽이려 합니다. 그 역시 하나님의 독수리 날개와 같은 특별한 보호하심으로 실패하자, 이제 용은 그 여자의 남은 자손을 공격합니다. 그 자손이 누구입니까? 곧 하나님의 계명을 지키며, 예수의 증거를 가진 자들입니다(17). 바로 우리 성도 개개인을 의미합니다. 공동체로서 교회를 공격하다 실패하자, 이제는 성도 개인과 가정들을 공격하는 시대가 열린 것입니다. 어떻게 해야 할까요? 싸우고, 또 싸워야 합니다. 물러나서는 안 됩니다. 어떻게 이길 수 있을까요? 어린양의 피와 능력, 증언하는 말씀, 그리고 죽기까지 생명을 아끼지 않는 헌신입니다(11).
Back to Earth (Verses 13–17)
The scene shifts once again from heaven back to earth. By contrasting heaven's victory with earth's ongoing struggle, this passage offers hope and encouragement to the Church. Since victory in heaven is assured, victory on earth is also certain, even if it seems delayed.
The dragon, defeated in heaven, now focuses on attacking the woman (the Church). The "time, times, and half a time" mentioned refers to a period of suffering, symbolizing a limited but significant time of persecution. This period likely represents the early Church’s persecution before Christianity was officially recognized in the Roman Empire.
However, God provides protection for the woman (the Church) by giving her "the two wings of a great eagle" (verse 14)—a metaphor for divine deliverance. The dragon (Satan) then attacks with a flood of water, but the earth itself swallows the water, symbolizing God's intervention in protecting His Church.
Enraged even further, the dragon turns his attention to "the rest of her offspring"—those who keep God’s commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus. This marks a shift in Satan's strategy. Having failed to destroy Jesus, and unable to destroy the Church, he now targets individual believers.
Takeaway for Us
Satan’s goal was first to kill Jesus, but he failed. Then he tried to destroy the Church, but he failed. Now, he targets individual believers and their families. We see this in today's world, where personal faith and family life are under spiritual attack.
How can we overcome this relentless onslaught? The Bible gives us a battle plan:
The blood of the Lamb – Trust in Jesus' sacrifice for our victory.
The word of our testimony – Boldly proclaim and live out our faith.
Unwavering commitment – Be willing to sacrifice for the sake of the gospel, even unto death.
The Book of Revelation is not just a warning about the end times; it is a call to courage and perseverance for the Church. While it depicts a fierce cosmic war, it also declares that the war has already been won in heaven. We, too, will be victorious if we stand firm.
Let us fight on, never retreat, and never give up. Victory belongs to the Lamb and those who follow Him."They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death." (Revelation 12:11)
