20241204 [새벽묵상] 끝까지 회개를 기다리시는 주님 | Until the Very End: Understanding God's Heart in Judgment (계/Rev 9:1~21)

1 The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. 2 When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss. 3 And out of the smoke locusts came down on the earth and were given power like that of scorpions of the earth. 4 They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads. 5 They were not allowed to kill them but only to torture them for five months. And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion when it strikes. 6 During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.

7 The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle. On their heads they wore something like crowns of gold, and their faces resembled human faces. 8 Their hair was like women’s hair, and their teeth were like lions’ teeth. 9 They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle. 10 They had tails with stingers, like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months. 11 They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon and in Greek is Apollyon (that is, Destroyer).

12 The first woe is past; two other woes are yet to come.

13 The sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the four horns of the golden altar that is before God. 14 It said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” 15 And the four angels who had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released to kill a third of mankind. 16 The number of the mounted troops was twice ten thousand times ten thousand. I heard their number.

17 The horses and riders I saw in my vision looked like this: Their breastplates were fiery red, dark blue, and yellow as sulfur. The heads of the horses resembled the heads of lions, and out of their mouths came fire, smoke and sulfur. 18 A third of mankind was killed by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur that came out of their mouths. 19 The power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails were like snakes, having heads with which they inflict injury.

20 The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the work of their hands; they did not stop worshiping demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood—idols that cannot see or hear or walk. 21 Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic arts, their sexual immorality or their thefts.

Do you remember yesterday's message? When the slain Lamb opened the seventh seal, after half an hour of silence, seven angels received seven trumpets. And when the prayers of the saints ascended, fire from the altar was thrown to earth in the golden censer, beginning the seven trumpet judgments. From the first to the fourth trumpet, natural disasters struck: hail, seas turning to blood, bitter waters like wormwood, and darkness. These were all natural disasters. However, today, through the fifth and sixth trumpet judgments, we see the plagues no longer targeting nature but people—specifically those who do not believe in God. These are plagues that torment them and take their lives. God's judgment intensifies with each plague. The judgment against unbelievers now extends to their very lives. Yet, despite this, today's passage tells us about those who survived these two plagues in the final two verses. Verses 20 and 21 tell us that even after experiencing all these plagues, they did not repent. Here, we can consider two things: First, these terrible plagues came upon them because they refused to repent until the end, and second, God's ultimate purpose in allowing these increasingly severe judgments was His desire for them to witness these plagues and repent. This, brothers and sisters, reveals God's heart. God is a God of justice. Before God's justice, unrighteousness must face judgment. However, judgment is not God's will. What God truly desires is for them to return to Him, even at the last moment. God desires repentance until the very end.

In today's passage, the fifth angel sounds his trumpet. A star that had fallen from heaven receives the key to the Abyss and opens it. From the opened Abyss emerge locusts. As we discussed yesterday, this recalls the locust plague among the ten plagues of Egypt. But verse 4 is strange. While locusts normally eat grass and plants, these are commanded to harm only those who don't have God's seal. At this point, we realize, "Ah, these aren't literal locusts but symbolic creatures." Verses 7-10 describe their appearance, which closely resembles the symbolic locusts in Joel. First, verse 7 says, "The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle." This echoes Joel 2:4, which describes the locusts of the Day of the Lord: "They have the appearance of horses; they gallop along like cavalry."

Joel reveals why God executes judgment through locusts. Joel 2:12 states: "'Even now,' declares the LORD, 'return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.'" God declares judgment so that people might hear the prophecy of judgment and return to Him even now. And in today's passage, verse 5, God commands the locusts from the Abyss: "They were not allowed to kill them but only to torture them for five months." Verse 6 tells us this torment was so severe that people would prefer death. Why, brothers and sisters, does the Lord not allow death but only permits this torment? It's because God wants them to return to Him even now. No matter how severe their torment, it's nothing compared to the eternal suffering that awaits after death. Through five plagues, the Lord doesn't kill them but gives them opportunities to repent. The Lord waits for their repentance until the end.

However, they don't repent, and the sixth trumpet sounds. Verse 13 tells us that a voice came from the four horns of the golden altar before God where the saints' prayers were offered, showing that this sixth trumpet judgment is God's response to the prayers of the saints. The message is this: Verse 14-15, release the four angels bound at the great river Euphrates, to kill a third of mankind at the very hour, day, month, and year God appointed. Beyond the great Euphrates River lay the lands of Assyria and Babylon, which conquered Israel in Old Testament times, and in the Roman era when this message was delivered, it suggested the Parthians whom Rome feared most, conveying the terror of God's judgment. However, the time and hour remain under God's sovereignty. This shows that God is the sovereign over history, time, and life itself.

Those who kill are an army of 200 million mounted troops. This number, showing an innumerable host, far exceeds even the entire Roman army of the time, which numbered about 120,000. The horses have heads like lions, and from their mouths come fire, smoke, and sulfur, reminiscent of hell. Verse 18 tells us that a third of mankind was killed by these three plagues of fire, smoke, and sulfur. Yet even in this sixth trumpet judgment, God doesn't kill everyone. Even when judging with death those who won't repent despite increasingly severe plagues, God doesn't destroy all. Why? He's waiting for their repentance. God waits and waits for their repentance even until the final moment when He takes their lives. However, today's passage shows they fail to recognize God's mercy and grace, stubbornly refusing to repent. This is the foolishness of humanity.

In conclusion, through the fifth and sixth trumpet judgments, those not sealed by God ultimately face the judgment of death. Yet all these plagues and deaths were not what God desired. By forewarning all these plagues and judgments, what God truly desired was for them to return to Him, even at the last moment. The Lord desires their repentance and return to Him. Our Lord is one who waits for repentance until the very end. Let us pray.
