Life by the Spirit
13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.
5:16 내가 이르노니 너희는 성령을 따라 행하라 그리하면 육체의 욕심을 이루지 아니하리라
5:17 육체의 소욕은 성령을 거스르고 성령은 육체를 거스르나니 이 둘이 서로 대적함으로 너희가 원하는 것을 하지 못하게 하려 함이니라

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
5:19 육체의 일은 분명하니 곧 음행과 더러운 것과 호색과

19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
5:22 오직 성령의 열매는 사랑과 희락과 화평과 오래 참음과 자비와 양선과 충성과
5:23 온유와 절제니 이같은 것을 금지할 법이 없느니라

5:26 헛된 영광을 구하여 서로 노엽게 하거나 서로 투기하지 말지니라
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
제가 중학교 2학년 때였을까요, 수업을 진행하던 선생님께서 갑자기 최근에 본 영화가 있는데 그 영화가 너무 재미있었다면서 영화 얘기를 해주셨습니다. 선생님의 이야기가 너무 재미있어서 학교가 끝나자마자 비디오를 빌려서 영화를 보았는데 그 영화가 바로 쇼생크탈출 이었습니다. 워낙 유명한 탈옥 영화라 많은 분들이 줄거리는 이미 다 알고 계실 것 같은데요. 극중에 모건프리먼이 연기한 레드라는 조연이 나옵니다. 영화의 주인공인 앤디가 탈옥하고 난 뒤, 레드도 얼마지나지 않아 복역40년차에 가석방이 되어 사회로 나오게 됩니다. 이제 그는 드디어 평생을 걸쳐 소망하던 자유인이 되었습니다. 그러나 그는 자유인이 되었는데도 불구하고 감옥에서 너무 시간을 오래 보낸 탓인지 바깥사회에서의 적응을 어려워 합니다. 마치 아직도 감옥에 있는 것처럼 자신이 일하고 있는 슈퍼마켓 매니저에게 화장실을 갈 때마다 물어보는 바람에 매니저에게 그런건 알아서 하라고 한소리를 듣는 장면이 있지요. 어린 제게는 자유인이 되었는데도 어떻게 살아야하는지 몰라서 혼란스러워하던 레드의 모습이 무척 인상깊었습니다. 그렇습니다. 이 모습은 어쩌면 저희와 닮은 모습이 아닐까요? 어제 저희는 그리스도께서 우리를 자유케 하셨다는 말씀을 들었습니다. 그렇다면 자유케된 우리는 어떻게 살아야 하는 걸까요? 극중의 레드처럼 다시 갇혀있던 것 처럼 살아야 할까요? 아니면 이젠 자유인이니 내 마음대로 살아도 되는 걸까요? 오늘의 말씀은 자유인으로 사는 것이 어떻게 사는 것이라고 말씀하고 계신가요?
When I was in eighth grade, during class one day, our teacher suddenly started talking about a movie she had recently watched, saying how incredible it was. Her story was so interesting that right after school, I rented the video - it was "The Shawshank Redemption." It's such a famous prison break movie that I'm sure most of you know the plot. There's a supporting character named Red, played by Morgan Freeman. After Andy, the main character, escapes, Red is eventually paroled after serving 40 years and returns to society. He has finally become a free man, something he had hoped for his entire life. However, despite being free, he struggles to adjust to life outside, perhaps because he spent too much time in prison. There's a scene where he keeps asking his supermarket manager for permission to use the bathroom, just as he did in prison, until the manager tells him he doesn't need to ask. As a young viewer, I was deeply impressed by Red's confusion - free yet unsure how to live in freedom.
Indeed, isn't this somewhat similar to our situation? Yesterday, we heard that Christ has set us free. So how should we, who have been set free, live? Should we live like Red, as if we're still imprisoned? Or since we're free now, can we live however we want? What does today's scripture tell us about living as free people?
자유인으로 사는 법 그 첫번째 – 오직 사랑으로 서로를 섬기라. 13절입니다. “형제들아 너희가 자유를 위하여 부르심을 입었으나 그러나 그 자유로 육체의 기회를 삼지말고 오직 사랑으로 서로 종노릇하라.” 뭐라고 말씀하십니까? 그 자유로 육체의 기회를 삼지 말라고 하십니다. 여기서 육체란 우리의 죄된 본성을 뜻합니다. 즉 자유케 되었다고 내 마음 내키는대로 사는 것이 아니라는 말씀입니다. 우리가 어떻게 자유케 되었습니까? 바로 예수님의 십자가 대속의 사랑을 믿는 믿음으로 자유케 되었습니다. 어제말씀 5:6을 보니 “그리스도 예수 안에서는 할례나 무할례나 효력이 없으되 사랑으로써 역사하는 믿음뿐이니라”라고 하십니다. 예수님의 사랑으로 자유함을 입은 우리이기 때문에 자유인인 우리는 사랑으로 서로를 섬겨야 하는 것입니다.
그리고 14절을 보니 “온 율법은 네 이웃 사랑하기를 네 자신같이 하라 하신 한 말씀에서 이루어졌나니”라고 하십니다. 이 말씀은 우리가 이웃사랑을 실천할 때 우리가 다시 율법 아래로 들어간다는 말씀이 아닙니다. 오히려 이 말씀을 통해 사랑으로 서로를 섬기는 것이 모든 율법보다 뛰어나다는 말씀인 것입니다. 그래서 예수님께서는 요한복음 13:34-35 에 이렇게 말씀하고 계시는 것입니다. “새 계명을 너희에게 주노니 서로 사랑하라 내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라. 너희가 서로 사랑하면 이로써 모든 사람이 너희가 내 제자인줄 알리라” 우리가 예수님의 사랑을 믿어 자유인으로 사는 법 그 첫번째는 바로 사랑으로 서로를 섬기는 것입니다.
The First Law of Living in Freedom -- Serve One Another in Love. Look at verse 13: "You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love." What does it say? Don't use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh. Here, "flesh" refers to our sinful nature. In other words, being set free doesn't mean living however we feel like living. How did we become free? We were set free through faith in Jesus's sacrificial love on the cross. Looking at yesterday's verse, Galatians 5:6 says, "For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love." Because we received freedom through Jesus's love, we as free people must serve one another in love.
And verse 14 states, "For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" This doesn't mean we return under the law when we practice loving our neighbors. Rather, this verse tells us that serving one another in love is superior to all the law. That's why Jesus says in John 13:34-35, "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." The first principle of living as free people who believe in Jesus's love is to serve one another in love.
자유인으로 사는 법 그 두번째 – 성령을 따라 살아야 합니다. 16절 말씀입니다. “내가 이르노니 너희는 성령을 따라 행하라 그리하면 육체의 욕심을 이루지 아니하리라” 우리가 우리의 죄된 본성의 욕심을 이루지 않을 수 있는 방법을 오늘 말씀은 성령을 따라 사는 것이라고 하십니다. 주목할만한 것은 성령을 따라 행하는 것의 반대는 육체를 따라 행하는 것이 아니라 육체의 욕심을 이루는 것이라는 것입니다. 이는 우리의 죄된 본성은 욕심이 있고 우리는 그 죄된 본성을 강화하거나 만족케하여 그 죄된 본성을 키워서는 안된다는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 17절 말씀처럼 우리안에 “육체의 소욕은 성령을 거스르고 성령은 육체를 거스르는데 이 둘이 서로 대적함으로 너희가 원하는 것을 하지 못하게 하려함이기” 때문입니다.
또한 오늘 말씀에서 육체와 성령을 비교할 때에 19-21절까지 육체의 일과 22-23절에서 성령의 열매로 비교하신 것을 주목하셔야 할 필요가 있습니다. 육체의 일은 곧 육체의 행위, 행동으로 번역할 수 있습니다. 이는 매우 즉각적입니다. 그래서 더 범하기가 쉽습니다. 그러나 성령의 열매는 육체의 행위처럼 즉각적이지 않습니다. 많은 시간과 노력이 필요합니다. 그렇기 때문에 우리는 육체의 욕심에 넘어가기가 쉬운 것입니다. 오늘 말씀 21절에 보니 이런 말씀까지 있습니다. “이런 일을 하는 자들은 하나님의 나라를 유업으로 받지 못할 것이요.” 여기서 이런 일을 하는 자들중에 하다 라는 말씀은 그러한 일을 삶의 패턴으로 실천하는 사람들을 말합니다. 이들은 하나님의 나라를 유업으로 받지 못한다고 하는데 이는 이들의 행동이 이들의 내적인 영적 상태를 보여주기 때문입니다. 바로 이들 마음 안에서 죄된 육체와 성령이 서로 싸워야 하는데 이들의 행동이 성령이 없는 것을 증명하므로 믿음이 없는 것 또한 증명되어 구원을 얻지 못한다는 말씀입니다.
The Second Law of Living in Freedom -- Live by the Spirit. Look at verse 16: "So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh." Today's scripture tells us that the way to avoid fulfilling our sinful nature's desires is to live by the Spirit. It's noteworthy that the opposite of walking by the Spirit isn't walking by the flesh, but gratifying the desires of the flesh. This means our sinful nature has desires, and we shouldn't strengthen or satisfy it, thereby feeding that sinful nature. Because, as verse 17 says, "For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want."
Also, we need to pay attention to how today's scripture compares the flesh and the Spirit - verses 19-21 list the acts of the flesh, while verses 22-23 describe the fruit of the Spirit. The acts of the flesh can be translated as works or actions of the flesh. These are very immediate, making them easier to commit. However, the fruit of the Spirit isn't immediate like the acts of the flesh. It requires much time and effort. That's why we easily fall into the desires of the flesh. In verse 21, we find this warning: "those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God." The phrase "those who live like this" refers to people who practice such things as their life pattern. They won't inherit God's kingdom because their actions reveal their internal spiritual state. In their hearts, the sinful flesh and the Spirit should be fighting each other, but their actions prove the absence of the Spirit, thereby proving the absence of faith and salvation.
그러나 우리는 저들과 다릅니다. 24절에 “그리스도 예수의 사람들은 육체와 함께 그 정욕과 탐심을 십자가에 못 박았”다고 말씀하시기 때문입니다. 우리는 예수님께 속해있는 그리스도 예수의 사람들입니다. 그러므로 우리는 십자가에서 옛사람을 벗어버리고 성령으로 새롭게된 새 사람들인 것입니다. 25절 말씀처럼 우리는 성령으로 사는 사람들이기에 성령으로 행하다, 즉 성령을 따라 살아가야 하는 것입니다.
말씀을 맺습니다. 복음을 통하여 우리는 자유를 얻었습니다. 오늘 말씀은 우리에게 묻습니다. 자유인으로서 어떻게 살아야 하는가? 육체의 기회를 따르는 삶을 살 것인가 사랑으로 서로 섬기며 살 것인가? 육체의 욕심을 이루며 살 것인가 성령을 따라 살 것인가? 여러분께서 오늘 하루도 믿음안에 자유하심으로 서로를 사랑으로 섬기고 성령님을 따라 성령의 열매 맺는 삶을 사시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
But we are different from them. Because verse 24 says, "Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires." We belong to Jesus - we are Christ Jesus's people. Therefore, we have shed our old self on the cross and become new people renewed by the Spirit. As verse 25 says, because we live by the Spirit, we must keep in step with the Spirit - that is, live according to the Spirit.
Let me conclude. Through the gospel, we have obtained freedom. Today's scripture asks us: How should we live as free people? Will we live following the opportunities of the flesh or serve one another in love? Will we live fulfilling the desires of the flesh or following the Spirit? I pray in the Lord's name that today, you will live in the freedom of faith, serving one another in love and following the Spirit, bearing the fruit of the Spirit.
