20240807 [새벽묵상] 삶의 고통과 어려움이 다가올 때 기도하십시요 | When Pain and Difficulties Come in Your Life, Pray (왕하/2 Kings 20:1-11)

20:1 In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, “This is what the Lord says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover.”

2 Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, 3 “Remember, Lord, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.

4 Before Isaiah had left the middle court, the word of the Lord came to him: 5 “Go back and tell Hezekiah, the ruler of my people, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will heal you. On the third day from now you will go up to the temple of the Lord. 6 I will add fifteen years to your life. And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city for my sake and for the sake of my servant David.’”

7 Then Isaiah said, “Prepare a poultice of figs.” They did so and applied it to the boil, and he recovered.

8 Hezekiah had asked Isaiah, “What will be the sign that the Lord will heal me and that I will go up to the temple of the Lord on the third day from now?”

9 Isaiah answered, “This is the Lord’s sign to you that the Lord will do what he has promised: Shall the shadow go forward ten steps, or shall it go back ten steps?”

10 “It is a simple matter for the shadow to go forward ten steps,” said Hezekiah. “Rather, have it go back ten steps.”

11 Then the prophet Isaiah called on the Lord, and the Lord made the shadow go back the ten steps it had gone down on the stairway of Ahaz.

What does today's scripture say about God? What aspects of God's character are revealed through today's message? To summarize today's scripture briefly: When Hezekiah, who was sick and about to die, prayed to God with weeping, God extended his life by 15 years and promised salvation from Assyria. God also healed Hezekiah's illness and as a sign, made the sun's shadow go back ten degrees. Everything God did in today's scripture starts from that moment of pain and difficulty when Hezekiah was sick and about to die. This is the essence of today's message. Everyone, pray when pain and difficulties approach in your life. If a time of pain and difficulty is approaching you, now is the time for you to pray. Pray when pain and difficulties approach in your life.

Let's look at Hezekiah's situation again. Verse 1 says: "In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, 'This is what the Lord says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover.'" Hezekiah is sick and about to die. He's in so much pain. But the prophet Isaiah is coming. What might Hezekiah have expected? Maybe he thought, "Oh, God is going to heal me. Isaiah will come and do this and that, and I'll live." Hope starts to rise. But when the prophet Isaiah comes, he delivers a terminal diagnosis, saying it's God's word: "You're going to die soon. You will certainly die, so put your affairs in order." Like this. You know, when a doctor gives a terminal diagnosis, even if your heart sinks, there's still hope that a miracle might happen, right? But if God gives a terminal diagnosis, that's literally the end. There's no hope. How must Hezekiah have felt? Verse 3 says, "Hezekiah wept bitterly." As he prayed to God without hope, Hezekiah cried so painfully. It says he wept bitterly. Have you ever experienced such difficult and painful things? Or are you perhaps going through such things now? Are you in so much pain, so tired that you can't even pray, and you're just weeping and groaning before God?

To those of you in such situations, God speaks. Jeremiah 29:11-13 says, "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.'" You must pray when pain and difficulties approach in your life. Because this is the opportunity to pray that God is giving you. This is not a calamity for you, but it is to give you peace and hope for the future. If you cry out to the Lord and pray at this time, God will hear your prayers and meet you. Do you think God really intended to kill Hezekiah? Did He purposely send Isaiah to say, "You're going to die"? No. God gave Hezekiah an opportunity. An opportunity to pray. This is an opportunity given by God. That's why God deliberately informed him. The song Hezekiah sang after he was healed is recorded in the book of Isaiah. Isaiah 38:17 says, "Surely it was for my benefit that I suffered such anguish. In your love you kept me from the pit of destruction; you have put all my sins behind your back." What does it say? It was for my benefit that I suffered such anguish. Everyone, pray when pain and difficulties approach in your life. It's not because God wants to add more pain to you, but because He wants to make you pray and give you peace. Pain and difficulty are opportunities to pray given by God. An opportunity to pray given by God. This is the first reason why you should pray when pain and difficulties approach.

Then what is the second reason? The second reason why we should pray when difficulties approach our lives is that God carries out His work through our prayers. Although we may pray for our personal reasons or personal needs, God carries out the work of His kingdom through our prayers. He accomplishes His work through our prayers. What did Hezekiah pray to God for? Because he was sick and dying, right? Hezekiah's prayer is focused on a very personal aspect. Let's look at verse 3: "Remember, Lord, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes." And Hezekiah wept bitterly. Hezekiah prayed for his personal life and death, blessings and curses. And while praying, he appealed to God about his own goodness. "Lord, I've been so faithful in my spiritual life all this time, I've been good with my tithes, I've kept the Sabbath well, I've served, Lord, please remember me." He prayed like this. It's a very personal prayer, but the Lord heard it. 20:4-6 says, "Before Isaiah had left the middle court, the word of the Lord came to him: 'Go back and tell Hezekiah, the ruler of my people, 'This is what the Lord, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will heal you. On the third day from now you will go up to the temple of the Lord. I will add fifteen years to your life.'"

Before Isaiah could even reach the middle of the city after giving Hezekiah the terminal diagnosis and leaving the palace, God responds to Hezekiah. Did God really intend to kill Hezekiah? No. God grants everything Hezekiah asked for. But as God answers that prayer, He changes the paradigm. From Hezekiah to God. He changes the paradigm. Hezekiah prayed for personal healing and appealed to his personal goodness, right? But God promises something Hezekiah didn't ask for. Verse 6 says, "And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city for my sake and for the sake of my servant David." Hezekiah prayed for personal healing, but God promises to protect all the people of Judah. Hezekiah prayed appealing to his personal goodness, but God reminds him of His faithfulness to the covenant He made with David, promising to protect not just Hezekiah personally, but all the people of Judah. From the beginning, when God refers to Himself in verse 5, He says, "This is what the Lord, the God of your father David, says," reminding Hezekiah that He is the faithful God who keeps the covenant He made with David long ago. He's letting Hezekiah know that it's not because of Hezekiah's goodness, but because of God's own faithfulness that He hears Hezekiah's prayer and also fulfills His plan. The focus completely shifts from Hezekiah to God. He accomplishes God's work through our personal prayers. Isn't that amazing? God is inviting you to participate in the execution of His plan. He accomplishes His work through your prayers. And this is done entirely based on God's faithfulness. How amazing is it that God accomplishes His work through our prayers? It truly is a glorious thing. Although we may come before the Lord because of our personal difficulties and pain, the Lord uses that small prayer to accomplish His great work according to His faithfulness. Accomplishing God's work through our prayers - this is the second reason why you should pray when pain and difficulties approach in your life.

Let me conclude the message. If unbearable pain, upsetting events, or difficult situations come to you, pray. This is God calling you. It's an opportunity to pray given by God. And through your prayers, you are participating in God's ministry. Do you know what happens when you do this? You will experience who God is. After Hezekiah was healed, he asked God for a sign. Then God shows Hezekiah the power of the Almighty God. Something that only the Creator God who made heaven and earth can do - He makes the sun's shadow go back ten degrees. What if Hezekiah had just despaired and not prayed to God when he was sick and about to die? He would not only have missed seeing God's work accomplished through his prayer, but he would have ended his life without experiencing how great God is. If you are going through such a difficult season right now, pray even more earnestly. This is an opportunity God is giving you, a privilege to participate in God's work, and a precious calling to experience who God is. Pray. When pain and difficulties approach in life, everyone, pray.
