20240806 [새벽묵상] 오직 주님만이 살아계신 하나님이십니다 | Only the LORD is the Living GOD (왕하/2 Kings 19:29-37)

29 “This will be the sign for you, Hezekiah:

“This year you will eat what grows by itself,

and the second year what springs from that.

But in the third year sow and reap,

plant vineyards and eat their fruit.

30 Once more a remnant of the kingdom of Judah

will take root below and bear fruit above.

31 For out of Jerusalem will come a remnant,

and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors.

“The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

32 “Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning the king of Assyria:

“‘He will not enter this city

    or shoot an arrow here.

He will not come before it with shield

or build a siege ramp against it.

33 By the way that he came he will return;

he will not enter this city,

declares the Lord.

34 I will defend this city and save it,

for my sake and for the sake of David my servant.’”

35 That night the angel of the Lord went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies! 36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to Nineveh and stayed there.

37 One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisrok, his sons Adrammelek and Sharezer killed him with the sword, and they escaped to the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon his son succeeded him as king.

What do you see through today's scripture? What is the image of God shown in today's passage? What attributes of God are revealed in this scripture? If you've been consistently attending dawn prayer and meditating on the Word, you'll remember that today's passage is God's response to King Hezekiah of Judah's earnest prayer. What happened? The great empire of Assyria of that time - the very Assyrian empire that had destroyed Northern Israel - attacked and captured all the fortified cities of Judah. Jerusalem was like a candle in the wind. Then they sent envoys to urge surrender. In the process, the king of Assyria not only despises King Hezekiah of Judah but also God. It's the meditation passage from last Saturday, 18:35: "Who of all the gods of these countries has been able to save their land from me? How then can the Lord deliver Jerusalem from my hand?" As the Assyrian empire conquered surrounding nations, no foreign god was able to save them from Assyria's attack, so now they're despising even Judah's God Jehovah, thinking He'll be the same. It's such a devastating statement. But King Hezekiah of Judah had no power to resist. All the fortified cities had already fallen, and the fall of the capital Jerusalem was merely a matter of time. Humanly speaking, there was nothing that could be done. But at that very moment, Hezekiah prays earnestly to God. 19:19 "Now, Lord our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms on earth may know that you alone, Lord, are God." This is it, everyone. Like Hezekiah's prayer, I pray that you will come to know today that Jehovah our Lord alone is the living God. Only the Lord is the living God. Amen.

Today's passage continues from this prayer of Hezekiah. It's the part where God hears Hezekiah's prayer and speaks to Hezekiah through the prophet Isaiah, which is today's main text. Now, didn't I just say that only the Lord is the living God? You received it with faith, saying "Amen!" But how can we know that God is the living God? In reality, aren't there many other religions around us? Among the numerous other gods, how can we be sure that only our Lord Jehovah is truly the living God? I want to talk about that today. The living God, first: God hears our prayers. It's 19:20, "Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: 'This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I have heard your prayer concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria.'" Everyone, our God is the one who hears your prayers. In our faith life, when we pray to God, sometimes it seems like God listens well, but there are also cases where we've been praying for a very long time but haven't received an answer yet. However, I can tell you with confidence: God is hearing all those prayers. Not a single prayer falls to the ground. Jesus said in Matthew 7:11, "If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!" I believe that our good Father, God, is hearing all your prayers.

The living God, second: God restores us. God restores us. In today's passage, God speaks to Hezekiah. 19:29, "This will be the sign for you, Hezekiah: This year you will eat what grows by itself, and the second year what springs from that. But in the third year sow and reap, plant vineyards and eat their fruit." What does this mean? Jerusalem is about to fall. The 185,000-strong Assyrian army is marching. In a situation where the country is about to perish, what is God promising now? He's promising the restoration of food. He's saying that in the land devastated by long wars, farming will resume and restoration will come. God's work is not a temporary salvation like urinating on a fire. God brings about restoration from our most fundamental needs. King Hezekiah's eyes, like ours, were focused on the huge problem right in front of him. Save us from the great Assyrian army! But God was drawing a bigger picture. He's promising not temporary salvation, but complete restoration. As the saying goes, "Agriculture is the foundation of all under heaven" - meaning agriculture is the great foundation of the world and the power that stably maintains a country - God is promising the restoration of food and population, which are the basis of national power, not just Judah's immediate problem. And God said this to confirm His promise. Verse 31: "The zeal of the Lord will accomplish this." The living God restores us, and God's zeal will surely accomplish this.

The living God, third: God saves us. God hears our prayers and saves us. Verses 32-33: "Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning the king of Assyria: 'He will not enter this city or shoot an arrow here. He will not come before it with shield or build a siege ramp against it. By the way that he came he will return; he will not enter this city,' declares the Lord." God says that the once-threatening Assyrian king's army won't even reach this city. In other words, they won't be able to touch a single hair. They won't even reach this city, and all the strategies of siege warfare that Assyria boasted about will be unused as they return. Sometimes we are shaken in the face of worldly threats, sometimes in the face of enemy threats. But under God's salvation and protection, they can't harm us at all. Their threats have no power before God. But God's threat, God's word, is fulfilled as it is. Verse 35: "That night the angel of the Lord went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning - there were all the dead bodies!" 185,000 soldiers were annihilated in one night. As God said, they didn't even reach Jerusalem and died a violent death. God is this powerful and great. Such a living God saves us.

I conclude the message. Only the Lord is the living God. God hears our prayers, restores us, and saves us. Only the living God can do all these things. At the end of today's passage, there's a story about the Assyrian king Sennacherib. Sennacherib, the king of a great empire who despised God and worshipped foreign gods, ends up being assassinated by his own sons while worshipping those powerless foreign gods. Do you believe that only the Lord is the living God? The God who heard Hezekiah's prayer will hear your prayers. He will restore you and save you. I hope we can pray together at this time to the living God, only to our Lord.
