8:1 엘리사가 이전에 아들을 다시 살려 준 여인에게 이르되 너는 일어나서 네 가족과 함께 거주할 만한 곳으로 가서 거주하라 여호와께서 기근을 부르셨으니 그대로 이 땅에 칠 년 동안 임하리라 하니
8:2 여인이 일어나서 하나님의 사람의 말대로 행하여 그의 가족과 함께 가서 블레셋 사람들의 땅에 칠 년을 우거하다가
1 Now Elisha had said to the woman whose son he had restored to life, “Go away with your family and stay for a while wherever you can, because the Lord has decreed a famine in the land that will last seven years.” 2 The woman proceeded to do as the man of God said. She and her family went away and stayed in the land of the Philistines seven years.
8:3 칠 년이 다하매 여인이 블레셋 사람들의 땅에서 돌아와 자기 집과 전토를 위하여 호소하려 하여 왕에게 나아갔더라
8:4 그 때에 왕이 하나님의 사람의 사환 게하시와 서로 말하며 이르되 너는 엘리사가 행한 모든 큰 일을 내게 설명하라 하니
8:5 게하시가 곧 엘리사가 죽은 자를 다시 살린 일을 왕에게 이야기할 때에 그 다시 살린 아이의 어머니가 자기 집과 전토를 위하여 왕에게 호소하는지라 게하시가 이르되 내 주 왕이여 이는 그 여인이요 저는 그의 아들이니 곧 엘리사가 다시 살린 자니이다 하니라
8:6 왕이 그 여인에게 물으매 여인이 설명한지라 왕이 그를 위하여 한 관리를 임명하여 이르되 이 여인에게 속한 모든 것과 이 땅에서 떠날 때부터 이제까지 그의 밭의 소출을 다 돌려 주라 하였더라
3 At the end of the seven years she came back from the land of the Philistines and went to appeal to the king for her house and land. 4 The king was talking to Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, and had said, “Tell me about all the great things Elisha has done.” 5 Just as Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha had restored the dead to life, the woman whose son Elisha had brought back to life came to appeal to the king for her house and land.
Gehazi said, “This is the woman, my lord the king, and this is her son whom Elisha restored to life.” 6 The king asked the woman about it, and she told him.
Then he assigned an official to her case and said to him, “Give back everything that belonged to her, including all the income from her land from the day she left the country until now.”
8:7 엘리사가 다메섹에 갔을 때에 아람 왕 벤하닷이 병들었더니 왕에게 들리기를 이르되 하나님의 사람이 여기 이르렀나이다 하니
8:8 왕이 하사엘에게 이르되 너는 손에 예물을 가지고 가서 하나님의 사람을 맞이하고 내가 이 병에서 살아나겠는지 그를 통하여 여호와께 물으라
Hazael Murders Ben-Hadad
7 Elisha went to Damascus, and Ben-Hadad king of Aram was ill. When the king was told, “The man of God has come all the way up here,” 8 he said to Hazael, “Take a gift with you and go to meet the man of God. Consult the Lord through him; ask him, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”
8:9 하사엘이 그를 맞이하러 갈새 다메섹의 모든 좋은 물품으로 예물을 삼아 가지고 낙타 사십 마리에 싣고 나아가서 그의 앞에 서서 이르되 당신의 아들 아람 왕 벤하닷이 나를 당신에게 보내 이르되 나의 이 병이 낫겠나이까 하더이다 하니
9 Hazael went to meet Elisha, taking with him as a gift forty camel-loads of all the finest wares of Damascus. He went in and stood before him, and said, “Your son Ben-Hadad king of Aram has sent me to ask, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”
8:10 엘리사가 이르되 너는 가서 그에게 말하기를 왕이 반드시 나으리라 하라 그러나 여호와께서 그가 반드시 죽으리라고 내게 알게 하셨느니라 하고
8:11 하나님의 사람이 그가 부끄러워하기까지 그의 얼굴을 쏘아보다가 우니
8:12 하사엘이 이르되 내 주여 어찌하여 우시나이까 하는지라 대답하되 네가 이스라엘 자손에게 행할 모든 악을 내가 앎이라 네가 그들의 성에 불을 지르며 장정을 칼로 죽이며 어린 아이를 메치며 아이 밴 부녀를 가르리라 하니
10 Elisha answered, “Go and say to him, ‘You will certainly recover.’ Nevertheless,[a] the Lord has revealed to me that he will in fact die.” 11 He stared at him with a fixed gaze until Hazael was embarrassed. Then the man of God began to weep.
12 “Why is my lord weeping?” asked Hazael.
“Because I know the harm you will do to the Israelites,” he answered. “You will set fire to their fortified places, kill their young men with the sword, dash their little children to the ground, and rip open their pregnant women.”
8:13 하사엘이 이르되 당신의 개 같은 종이 무엇이기에 이런 큰일을 행하오리이까 하더라 엘리사가 대답하되 여호와께서 네가 아람 왕이 될 것을 내게 알게 하셨느니라 하더라
8:14 그가 엘리사를 떠나가서 그의 주인에게 나아가서 왕이 그에게 묻되 엘리사가 네게 무슨 말을 하더냐 하니 대답하되 그가 내게 이르기를 왕이 반드시 살아나시리이다 하더이다 하더라

13 Hazael said, “How could your servant, a mere dog, accomplish such a feat?”
“The Lord has shown me that you will become king of Aram,” answered Elisha.
14 Then Hazael left Elisha and returned to his master. When Ben-Hadad asked, “What did Elisha say to you?” Hazael replied, “He told me that you would certainly recover.” 15 But the next day he took a thick cloth, soaked it in water and spread it over the king’s face, so that he died. Then Hazael succeeded him as king.
8:16 이스라엘의 왕 아합의 아들 요람 제오년에 여호사밧이 유다의 왕이었을 때에 유다의 왕 여호사밧의 아들 여호람이 왕이 되니라
8:17 여호람이 왕이 될 때에 나이가 삼십이 세라 예루살렘에서 팔 년 동안 통치하니라

Jehoram King of Judah
16 In the fifth year of Joram son of Ahab king of Israel, when Jehoshaphat was king of Judah, Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat began his reign as king of Judah. 17 He was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. 18 He followed the ways of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for he married a daughter of Ahab. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord. 19 Nevertheless, for the sake of his servant David, the Lord was not willing to destroy Judah. He had promised to maintain a lamp for David and his descendants forever.
8:20 여호람 때에 에돔이 유다의 손에서 배반하여 자기 위에 왕을 세운 고로
8:21 여호람이 모든 병거를 거느리고 사일로 갔더니 밤에 일어나 자기를 에워싼 에돔 사람과 그 병거의 장관들을 치니 이에 백성이 도망하여 각각 그들의 장막들로 돌아갔더라
8:22 이와 같이 에돔이 유다의 수하에서 배반하였더니 오늘까지 그러하였으며 그 때에 립나도 배반하였더라
20 In the time of Jehoram, Edom rebelled against Judah and set up its own king. 21 So Jehoram[b] went to Zair with all his chariots. The Edomites surrounded him and his chariot commanders, but he rose up and broke through by night; his army, however, fled back home. 22 To this day Edom has been in rebellion against Judah. Libnah revolted at the same time.
8:23 여호람의 남은 사적과 그가 행한 모든 일은 유다 왕 역대지략에 기록되지 아니하였느냐
8:24 여호람이 그의 조상들과 함께 자매 그의 조상들과 함께 다윗 성에 장사되고 그의 아들 아하시야가 대신하여 왕이 되리라
23 As for the other events of Jehoram’s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 24 Jehoram rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David. And Ahaziah his son succeeded him as king.
8:25 이스라엘의 왕 아합의 아들 요람 제십이년에 유다 왕 여호람의 아들 아하시야가 왕이 되니
8:26 아하시야가 왕이 될 때에 나이가 이십이 세라 예루살렘에서 일 년을 통치하니라 그의 어머니의 이름은 아달랴라 이스라엘 왕 오므리의 손녀이더라
8:27 아하시야가 아합의 집 길로 행하여 아합의 집과 같이 여호와 보시기에 악을 행하였으니 그는 아합의 집의 사위가 되었음이러라
Ahaziah King of Judah
25 In the twelfth year of Joram son of Ahab king of Israel, Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah began to reign. 26 Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem one year. His mother’s name was Athaliah, a granddaughter of Omri king of Israel. 27 He followed the ways of the house of Ahab and did evil in the eyes of the Lord, as the house of Ahab had done, for he was related by marriage to Ahab’s family.
8:28 그가 아합의 아들 요람과 함께 길르앗 라못으로 가서 아람 왕 하사엘과 더불어 싸우더니 아람 사람들이 요람에게 부상을 입힌지라
8:29 요람 왕이 아람 왕 하사엘과 싸울 때에 라마에서 아람 사람에게 당한 부상을 치료하려 하여 이스르엘로 돌아왔더라 유다의 왕 여호람의 아들 아하시야가 아합의 아들 요람을 보기 위하여 내려왔으니 이는 그에게 병이 생겼음이더라
28 Ahaziah went with Joram son of Ahab to war against Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth Gilead. The Arameans wounded Joram; 29 so King Joram returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds the Arameans had inflicted on him at Ramoth[c] in his battle with Hazael king of Aram.
Then Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to Jezreel to see Joram son of Ahab, because he had been wounded.
사람 일은 모른다 (1~6절)
이스라엘 땅에 7년 흉년이 듭니다. 엘리사는 수넴 귀부인에게 이 사실을 알려주고, 가족들과 더불어 거주할 곳을 찾아 기근을 피하라고 말합니다. 이에 수넴 여인은 블레셋 땅에서 7년 동안 기근을 피하고 다시 고국으로 돌아옵니다. 그동안 많은 변화가 있었습니다.
아마도 남편은 죽은 것으로 보입니다. 그리고 돌아와보니 자신의 집과 전토를 모두 잃었습니다.
몇 가지 추측할 수 있습니다. 누군가에게 맡겨 놓고 갔는데, 그가 서류를 위조하고 착복한 것입니다. 아니면 빈 토지와 집이 나라로 귀속된 것일 수 있습니다. 어찌됐건 회복하기 힘든 것이 분명합니다.
이민자인 우리들은 종종 비슷한 이야기를 듣습니다. 고국에 있는 재산을 신뢰할 만한 사람에게 맡겼는데, 나중에 보니 그가 임의로 처리하여 착복했다는 스토리는 너무도 흔한 이민 사회의 레퍼토리입니다.
얼마나 억울합니까? 그래서 왕에게 자신의 억울함을 하소연하러 찾아갔습니다. 그런데 마침, 오늘 본문 표현은 그 때에(4) 왕과 엘리사의 사환 게하시가 엘리사의 기적에 대해서 이야기를 나누고 있었습니다.
그러자 게하시는 바로 이 여인이 내가 말했던 여인이고, 저 아이가 다시 살아난 그의 아들이라고 말합니다(5).
왕은 그녀의 이야기에 귀를 기울였고, 그녀를 위해서 한 관리를 임명하여 모든 땅과 집은 물론 그 땅에서 7년 동안 거둔 소출까지 돌려주라고 명령합니다. 그녀에게는 너무 큰 위안이 되었을 것입니다. 사실 7년 전에 그녀는 사령관이나 왕에게 무슨 구할 것이 있느냐(4:13)는 엘리사의 물음에 아무것도 필요 없다고 대답했습니다. 하지만 엘리사 덕분에 이런 도움을 받을 줄 누가 알았겠습니까? 사람 일은 어떻게 될지 모릅니다. 함부로 장담하거나 교만해서는 안 됩니다.
We Never Know What Will Happen (Verses 1-6)
There was a seven-year famine in the land of Israel. Elisha informed the Shunammite woman about this and advised her to find a place to live to avoid the famine. The Shunammite woman fled to the land of the Philistines for seven years and then returned to her homeland. Many changes had occurred during that time.
It appears that her husband might have died. Upon her return, she found that she had lost all her property and land. There are a few possibilities. She might have left her property with someone who then forged documents and took possession of it, or the vacant land and house might have reverted to the state. In any case, it seemed nearly impossible for her to recover them.
As immigrants, we often hear similar stories. People leave their properties in their home countries with someone they trust, only to find out later that the person embezzled it. These are common stories in immigrant communities.
How unfair this must have felt! So she went to the king to appeal her grievance. Coincidentally, in today's scripture, the king and Gehazi, the servant of Elisha, were discussing Elisha's miracles at that moment. Gehazi identified her as the woman he was talking about and pointed out her son, who had been brought back to life (verse 5).
The king listened to her story and appointed an official to restore all her property, including the produce of the land during the seven years. This must have been a great relief for her. Seven years earlier, when Elisha asked if she had any requests for the commander or the king (4:13), she said she needed nothing. Yet, who would have thought she would receive such help because of Elisha? We never know what will happen. We must not be overly confident or arrogant.
열방도 다스리시는 하나님 (7~15절)
엘리사가 웬일인지 아람(수리아, 시리아)의 수도인 다메섹으로 갑니다.
마침 왕 벤 하닷이 병에 걸렸습니다. 그는 엘리사가 자신의 왕국에 있다는 소식을 듣고는 수많은 예물을 자신의 심복인 하사엘에게 들려 보내서 자신의 병이 나을 것인지를 묻습니다(9).
그러자 엘리사는 왕이 반드시 나을 것이지만, 반드시 죽을 것이라는 요상한 예언을 합니다(10).
그러니까 병 때문에 죽는 것은 아니지만, 다른 이유로 반드시 죽을 것이라는 말입니다.
그 다른 이유가 무엇일까요? 그것은 바로 벤 하닷이 신뢰하는 부하 하사엘입니다.
유대 역사가 요세푸스는 하사엘은 그 집에 충성된 자라고 말했습니다.
하지만 결국 그는 엘리사의 예언대로 자신의 주인인 벤 하닷을 죽이고, 자신이 왕이 됩니다.
앗시리아(앗수르)의 살만에셀 3세의 비문에는 “하찮은 사람에 불과한 하사엘이 왕위를 찬탈했다”라고 기록되어 있습니다.
한편 이러한 예언을 하던 중 엘리사는 하사엘이 부끄러울 정도로 그를 노려보다가 갑자기 울기 시작합니다. 상상만해도 너무 당황스러운 장면입니다.
이에 하사엘이 이유를 물었고, 엘리사는 하사엘이 아람의 왕이 되어 이스라엘에게 행할 악행을 미리 보고 우는 것이라고 알려줍니다(12).
그리고 엘리사의 예언은 차근차근 이루어집니다. 그가 벤 하닷을 죽이고 아람 왕이 된 후, 실제로 이스라엘을 침략합니다(10:32~33; 13:3~7; 암 1:3~5). 하나님은 하사엘을 들어 하나님의 말씀에 불순종하는 이스라엘을 심판하십니다. 하나님은 이스라엘의 하나님 뿐 아니라 열방의 하나님이십니다.
God Governs the Nations (Verses 7-15)
Elisha goes to Damascus, the capital of Aram (Syria), for some reason. At that time, King Ben-Hadad was ill. Hearing that Elisha was in his kingdom, he sent his trusted servant Hazael with many gifts to inquire whether he would recover from his illness (verse 9).
Elisha predicted that the king would recover from his illness but would surely die (verse 10). So, he wouldn't die from his illness but from another cause.
What was that cause? It was none other than his trusted servant Hazael.
The Jewish historian Josephus described Hazael as a faithful servant. However, as predicted by Elisha, Hazael killed his master Ben-Hadad and became king himself.
In an inscription by Shalmaneser III of Assyria, it is recorded that "Hazael, a nobody, usurped the throne.
"During this prophecy, Elisha stared at Hazael to the point of embarrassment and then suddenly began to weep. This must have been a shocking scene. When Hazael asked why, Elisha explained that he was weeping because he foresaw the atrocities Hazael would commit against Israel as the king of Aram (verse 12).
Elisha's prophecy gradually came true. After becoming the king of Aram by killing Ben-Hadad, Hazael indeed invaded Israel (10:32-33; 13:3-7; Amos 1:3-5). God used Hazael to judge Israel for their disobedience to His word. God is not only the God of Israel but the God of all nations.
유다 왕 여호람과 아하시야 (16~29절)
북이스라엘 왕 아합의 아들 요람(여호람)이 왕이 되고 5년째에, 유다에서는 여호사밧의 아들 여호람이 32세의 나이로 왕이 되어 8년을 통치합니다. 그는 아합의 딸인 아달랴와 결혼합니다. 그리고 그는 다윗의 길이 아닌 아합의 길을 따릅니다. 결국 하나님은 아라비아 사람들을 들어 그를 심판하십니다.

여호람의 아들 아하시야가 이어 왕위를 차지합니다. 하지만 그의 어머니는 아합의 딸, 이세벨의 딸인 아달랴입니다. 뿐만 아니라 아하시야는 아버지 여호람처럼 아합 가문의 여성과 결혼을 합니다.
외가이자 처가가 아합 집안이 된 것입니다. 이것은 하나님이 보시기에 매우 큰 죄였습니다(27).
그는 자신의 삼촌이자 이스라엘의 왕인 요람 왕과 함께 아람과 전쟁을 합니다. 하지만 하나님이 택하신 하사엘에게 요람 왕이 크게 부상을 입어 결국 이스르엘로 돌아옵니다. 조카인 아하시야 역시 삼촌을 보러 이스르엘로 옵니다. 지혜자는 다음과 같이 말했습니다.
무릇 마음이 교만한 자를 여호와께서 미워하시나니 피차 손을 잡을지라도 벌을 면하지 못하리라
(잠 16:5)
교만한 악인들이 손을 잡고 아무리 자신들의 왕국을 만들려고 해도, 그리고 어리석은 다윗의 왕가 사람들이 그것에 협조를 해도 그들의 계획은 무산될 것입니다. 왜냐하면 하나님은 열왕들을 주관하시는 만왕의 왕이시기 때문입니다.
본문에서 본 것처럼 열왕들은 모두 하나님의 명령과 계획과 섭리대로 움직입니다.
죽고 죽이는 왕위 쟁탈전 가운데 유일한 규칙이 있다면, 그것은 신실하신 하나님의 언약대로입니다.
인간들은 끊임없이 손을 잡고, 배신하고, 또 배신하는 것을 반복하지만, 신실하신 하나님만 당신의 언약대로 당신의 뜻을 이루시는 분입니다.
만일 우리가 하나님 편에만 서 있는다면 무엇을 걱정하고 두려워할 필요가 있겠습니까?
하나님 편에만, 그 언약 안에만 머문다면 말입니다.
King Jehoram and Ahaziah of Judah (Verses 16-29)
In the fifth year of Joram (Jehoram), the son of Ahab, becoming king of Israel, Jehoshaphat's son Jehoram became king of Judah at the age of 32 and reigned for eight years. He married Athaliah, the daughter of Ahab, and followed the ways of Ahab instead of David.
As a result, God used the Arabs to judge him.
All his sons were killed except for his youngest son Jehoahaz (Ahaziah). Jehoram died of a severe intestinal disease, and no one regretted his death (2 Chronicles 21:19-20). However, God remembered His covenant with David and did not extinguish David's lineage (verse 19).
Jehoram's son Ahaziah succeeded him. However, his mother was Athaliah, the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel. Moreover, Ahaziah also married a woman from Ahab's family, making his maternal and marital families part of Ahab's house. This was a grave sin in God's eyes (verse 27).
Ahaziah joined his uncle, King Joram of Israel, in a war against Aram. However, God's chosen instrument Hazael severely wounded King Joram, forcing him to return to Jezreel. Ahaziah also went to Jezreel to visit his uncle. A wise person once said,
"The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished" (Proverbs 16:5).
No matter how much the proud and wicked join forces and try to build their kingdoms, and even if the foolish descendants of David's house cooperate with them, their plans will fail. Because God is the King of kings who governs the kings. As we see in the scripture, all the kings move according to God's commands, plans, and providence. In the midst of the deadly struggles for the throne, the only constant is the faithful God who accomplishes His covenant. Humans continuously join hands, betray, and repeat betrayal, but only the faithful God fulfills His will according to His covenant. If we stand on God's side, what do we have to fear or worry about? As long as we stay on God's side, within His covenant.
