To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours:
2 Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
1:3 그의 신기한 능력으로 생명과 경건에 속한 모든 것을 우리에게 주셨으니 이는 자기의 영광과 덕으로써 우리를 부르신 이를 앎으로 말미암음이라

[Confirming One’s Calling and Election]
3 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
1:5 그러므로 너희가 더욱 힘써 너희 믿음에 덕을, 덕에 지식을,
1:6 지식에 절제를, 절제에 인내를, 인내에 경건을,
1:7 경건에 형제 우애를, 형제 우애에 사랑을 더하라
1:8 이런 것이 너희에게 있어 흡족한 즉 너희로 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 알기에 게으르지 않고 열매 없는 자가 되지 않게 하려니와
1:9 이런 것이 없는 자는 맹인이라 멀리 보지 못하고 그의 옛 죄가 깨끗하게 된 것을 잊었느니라
5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.

10 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
베드로서전서는 고난과 시련에 대해 위로와 격려의 말씀을 전하고 있습니다.
반면, 오늘부터 살펴볼 베드로후서는 신자들의 영적 성숙을 강조하며 교회 내에 침투한 거짓 교사들에 대한 경고를 하고 있습니다.
대한민국에서 가장 유명한 이단 중 하나는 신천지입니다. 신천지, 또는 새 하늘과 새 땅으로도 알려져 있는 이 단체는 교리적인 문제뿐만 아니라, "추수꾼"이라 불리는 그들의 회원들이 거짓 신분으로 교회에 등록하여 침투합니다. 그 후, 그들은 교회 회원들을 따로 불러 성경 공부를 진행하며 교회 분열, 가정 파괴, 학업 중단, 그리고 기타 사회적 문제들을 일으키는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
While 1 Peter addresses external suffering and trials with comfort and encouragement, 2 Peter, which we will examine from today, emphasizes spiritual maturity among the believers alongside warning them about false teachers infiltrating the church.
In South Korea, one of the most notorious cults ever is Shincheonji. Shincheonji, also known as New Heaven and New Earth, is problematic not only because of its doctrinal issues but also because its members, known as "harvesters" They infiltrate churches by registering under false pretenses. They then lure church members into separate Bible studies leading to church division, family destruction, school dropouts, and other social issues.
청년 시절의 제 경험을 말씀드리자면, 우리 교회는 청년들과 젊은 집사님들을 위한 별도의 예배를 드렸습니다. 보통 20-30명의 청년이 예배에 참석했습니다. 그날 저는 찬양 인도를 맡았고, 예배 시작 2분 전이었는데 참석자가 4~5명밖에 없었습니다. 그래서 저는 청년들을 담당하는 부목사님을 찾아가 상황을 말씀드렸습니다. 부목사님은 그날 매우 스트레스를 받으신 듯 보였고 이미 문제를 알고 계신 것 같았습니다. 그래서 저는 다른 청년들에게 전화를 걸기 시작했습니다. 전화를 걸었지만 아무도 제 전화를 받지 않았습니다. 결국 거의 아무도 오지 않은 상태에서 예배를 시작했습니다. 그날 무슨 찬양을 했는지, 빠른 곡이었는지 느린 곡만 했는지조차 기억나지 않습니다. 단지 그날 키보드를 연주하셨던 사모님이 키보드를 치시면서 눈물을 흘리시던 것만 기억납니다. 나중에 알게 된 사실이지만, 권사님과 집사 한 분이 대부분의 젊은 성인들을 만나 이상한 성경 공부를 했다고 합니다. 그리고 그 권사님과 집사님은 10년 이상 그 교회를 다닌 성도였습니다. 신천지는 오늘날에도 활동 중인 매우 무서운 집단입니다. 지난 3월에는 그들의 40주년을 기념했습니다. 그리고 2024년 3월 현재, 전 세계 38개국에 있는 1,382개 교회가 신천지 예수교회로 간판을 변경했습니다.
I experienced this when I was a young adult. We had a separate worship for the young adults and the younger deacons of the church. We usually had around 20-30 young adults come for worship. I think I was leading praise that day and it was 2 minutes before worship. There were only four or five people in attendance. So I went to our associate pastor who leads the young adults. I told him about the situation and he looked very stressed that day and seemed to already know about the issue. So I started calling the other young adults. I started calling but no one picked up my phone call. So we started worship with almost no one in attendance. I don’t even remember what songs we played, whether we played fast songs or only slow songs. I just remember samonim who played keyboard that day, crying her eyes out while playing keyboard. Later, I found out that there was a kwonsanim and a deacon who met most of the young adults to have some weird bible study. And the kwonsanim and the deacon were members of the church for over 10 years. Shincheonji is a very scary group that is still active today. This past March, they just celebrated their 40th anniversary. And as of March 2024, 1,382 churches in 38 countries internationally changed their signs to Shincheonji Church of Jesus.

베드로는 자신을 예수 그리스도의 종이자 사도라고 밝히며, 모든 그리스도인의 믿음이 "우리 하나님과 구주 예수 그리스도의 의를 힘입어"(1)라고 기록합니다. 이는 그리스도인의 믿음의 출처가 자신이 아닌 하나님이라는 것을 의미합니다. 즉, 우리가 하나님을 선택해서 믿은 것이 아니라, 하나님이 우리를 선택하시고 자녀로 부르셨기에 우리가 하나님을 믿게 되었다는 것입니다.
Different media avenues have aired documentaries to inform the public about the dangers of Shincheonji. The problem with their doctrine is their cunning misinterpretation of the Bible, directing people's attention not towards God but towards their leader. The only way to avoid being ensnared by cults is through correct biblical knowledge, knowing God correctly. However, this knowledge is not just intellectual; it includes experiential knowledge through a personal relationship with God.
In the early days of Christianity when 2 Peter was written, the church faced confusion due to heretical ideologies like Gnosticism. To protect believers from these heresies, correct knowledge of the faith was necessary.
Peter, identifying himself as a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, declares that the faith of all Christians has come through the “righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ” (1). This means the source of a Christian's faith is not themselves but God. In other words, we believe in God not because we chose Him, but because He chose us and called us as His children.
그 후 베드로는 " 하나님과 우리 주 예수를 앎으로 은혜와 평강이 너희에게 더욱 많을지어다"(2)라고 씁니다. 이 인사말은 바울이 그의 서신을 시작할 때 사용하는 것과 약간 다릅니다. 예를 들어, 고린도전서 1:3에서 바울은 "하나님 우리 아버지와 주 예수 그리스도로부터 은혜와 평강이 있기를 원하노라"라고 씁니다.

하나님이 천지를 창조하셨을 때 세상은 평안으로 가득했습니다. 그러나 인간의 죄로 인해 이 평안은 사라지고 불안과 죽음이 찾아왔습니다. 그러나 예수 그리스도의 대속적 희생으로 이 땅에 평안이 다시 회복되었습니다. 궁극적인 평안은 그리스도를 통하지 않고는 누릴 수 없습니다. 세상이 제공하는 평안은 일시적입니다만, 에피그노시스를 통해 예수를 믿는 사람은 죄 사함을 받고 의로워져 진정한 평안을 누리게 됩니다.
3-4a절은 "그의 신기한 능력으로 생명과 경건에 속한 모든 것을 우리에게 주셨으니 이는 자기의 영광과 덕으로써 우리를 부르신 이를 앎으로 말미암음이라 이로써 그 보배롭고 지극히 큰 약속을 우리에게 주사."라고 기록하고 있습니다.
Peter then writes "grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord" (2). This greeting is a little different from Paul when he begins his letters. For example in 1 Corinthians 1:3, Paul writes “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Peter specifies that the grace and peace will be achieved through "knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord" (2). The Greek word translated as "knowledge" here, "epignosis," implies a clear, precise understanding, not just a superficial awareness of God, but a deep, experiential knowledge gained through personal communion with Him.
So, why would God's grace and peace increase through epignosis? When God created the heavens and the earth, the world was filled with peace. However, this peace was lost due to human sin, replaced by unrest and death. But through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ, peace was restored to earth. Ultimate peace, therefore, cannot be experienced without Christ. The peace the world offers is temporary, but through epignosis, those who believe in Jesus receive forgiveness of sins and righteousness, enjoying true peace.
Verses 3-4a writes, " His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises."
에피그노시스를 통해 우리는 주님이 "경건에 속한 모든 것"과 "그 보배롭고 지극히 큰 약속"을 주셨다는 것을 알게 됩니다. 여기에는 새 생명, 그리스도의 재림, 새 하늘과 땅, 그리스도의 영원한 나라로의 입성이 포함됩니다. 하나님이 이렇게 위대한 약속을 주신 이유는 우리가 세상의 타락한 욕망을 추구하는 것에서 벗어나 신성한 성품에 참여하도록 변화시키기 위해서입니다.
우리의 신분이 이미 그리스도의 희생의 피로 인해 변화되었다는 것을 알고 있지만, 우리는 여전히 세상의 타락을 추구하는 경향이 있습니다. 그래서 베드로는 우리에게 "너희 부르심과 택하심을 굳게 하라"(10)고 하며, "우리 주 예수 그리스도를 알기에 게으르지 않고 열매 없는 자가 되지 않게 하려니와"(8)라고 권면합니다.
베드로는 그리스도인들이 믿음에 덕, 지식, 절제, 인내, 경건, 형제 우애, 사랑을 더하여 적절한 열매를 맺도록 권면합니다(5-7). 이 덕목들은 "믿음"에서 시작하여 "사랑"으로 끝을 맺습니다. 이 "사랑"은 남을 위해 자신을 희생하는 행위를 의미합니다.
Through epignosis, we understand that the Lord has granted us "everything we need for a godly life" and "very great and precious promises," including the promises of new life, Christ's return, a new heaven and earth, and entrance into the eternal kingdom of Christ. God has given us these tremendous promises to transform us from pursuing the corrupt desires of the world to participating in the divine nature.
Although we know our status has been changed by the blood of Christ's sacrifice, we are still prone to chase after worldly corruption. Therefore, Peter urges us to "make every effort to confirm your calling and election" (10) and not to be "ineffective and unproductive" (8) in our knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Peter specifically asks Christians to mature and bear appropriate fruits by adding to their faith virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love (5-7). These qualities start with "faith," a divine gift, and culminate in "love," which involves sacrificing oneself for others.
이와 같이 우리가 믿음에 이 일곱 가지 덕목을 채워 나갈 때, 우리는 하나님을 더 깊이 체험하는 성숙한 그리스도인이 됩니다.
어떤 것이 부족하다고 생각하십니까? 믿음? 지식? 절제? 사랑? 부족한 것을 하나님께 고백할 때, 하나님은 그것을 여러분들 가운데 넘치게 하실 것입니다. 하나님은 여러분에게 믿음을 넘치게 하실 것입니다. 하나님은 여러분에게 사랑을 넘치게 하실 것입니다.
우리가 세상의 욕망을 추구하지 않고 항상 믿음, 덕, 지식, 절제, 인내, 경건, 형제 우애, 사랑을 추구하는 그리스도인이 되기를 기도합니다. 그리고 이 모든 것은 에피그노시스에서 시작합니다. 예수님을 아는 것도 너무나 중요하지만 더 중요한 것은 우리가 매일 매일 삶 가운데서 하나님의 은혜를 경험할 수 있는 진정한 에피그노시스를 경험 하시는 성도님이 되시길 바랍니다.
In this way, when we fill our faith with these seven virtues, we become mature Christians who experience God more profoundly.
Which one do you think you are lacking. Faith? Knowledge? Self-control? Love?
Whatever you are lacking, when you confess that to God, God will overflow you with that virtue. God will overflow you with faith. God will overflow you with love.
I pray that we will be Christians who will not pursue worldly desires but that we will always pursue faith virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. And this all starts from epignosis- knowledge. Knowing Jesus is indeed important, but what's more crucial is that you become a believer who experiences true epignosis, experiencing God's grace day by day in your life.
