3:13 또 너희가 열심으로 선을 행하면 누가 너희를 해하리요

3:18 그리스도께서도 단번에 죄를 위하여 죽으사 의인으로서 불의한 자를 대신하셨으니 이는 우리를 하나님 앞으로 인도하려 하심이라 육체로는 죽임을 당하시고 영으로는 살리심을 받으셨으니
3:19 그가 또한 영으로 가서 옥에 있는 영들에게 선포하시니라
3:20 그들은 전에 노아의 날 방주를 준비할 동안 하나님이 오래 참고 기다리실 때에 복종하지 아니하던 자들이라 방주에서 물로 말미암아 구원을 얻은 자가 몇 명뿐이니 겨우 여덟 명이라
3:21 물은 예수 그리스도께서 부활하심으로 말미암아 이제 너희를 구원하는 표니 곧 세례라 이는 육체의 더러운 것을 제하여 버림이 아니요 하나님을 향한 선한 양심의 간구니라
3:22 그는 하늘에 오르사 하나님 우편에 계시니 천사들과 권세들과 능력들이 그에게 복종하느니라
13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.” 15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 17 For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. 18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. 19 After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits— 20 to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.
저는 요리하는 것을 좋아합니다. 18살 때 부모님 집을 나와서 스스로 요리를 시작했어야 했습니다. 처음에는 칼 다루기가 서툴렀죠. 어느 날 당근이나 감자를 썰다가 제 손가락을 베는 일도 있었습니다. 여러분들은 어떤 느낌인지 아실 것입니다. 손가락을 베면 바로 피가 나지 않고 빨간 선이 보이자나요. 하지만 참으로 아프죠. 그래서 아픔의 화를 칼이나 당근, 감자에다 풀게 됩니다. 제 아내는 피를 보고 당황해서 아무 것도 할 수 없이 그저 서 있기만 한 장면도 기억납니다. 이런 작은 고통조차 우리를 예민하게 만들고 감정을 잃게 할 수 있습니다. 그럼 더 심한 고통이 닥친다면 어떨까요? 사람들은 종종 무너지거나 자신을 제어할 수 없게 됩니다.
우리 모두 기독교인이기 이전에 인간이기에 고통은 매우 힘든 것입니다. 베드로전서의 대상도 힘들어 했습니다. 그들은 힘든 상황에 처해 있었습니다. 엄청난 핍박이 시작 되었습니다. 신앙을 유지하고는 있었지만, 육체적, 심리적, 경제적, 영적 고통은 신자들 사이에서 큰 혼란을 야기하였고, 일부는 신앙을 버리기도 했습니다. 베드로는 본도, 갈라디아, 갑바도기아, 아시아와 비두니아에 흩어진 나그네들에게 이 고통에 대해 말하고 있습니다. 그는 고통을 수동적으로 견디기만 하는 것이 아니라, 고통을 일으키는 많은 악에 맞서 선을 행할 것을 촉구합니다.
One thing I love to do is cook. Ever since I was 18, I was out of my parents’ house, so I was forced to cook. In the beginning, I was very clumsy with the knife. One day I would be cutting carrots or potatoes and accidentally cut my own finger. I’m sure most of you know how that feels. Once you cut your finger, it doesn’t bleed right away. But it stings so badly. So you take out your anger on the knife or the carrots or potatoes. My wife used to panic when she would see blood and just stand still not being able to do anything. Even a small suffering like this can make us overly sensitive and lose control of our emotions. What if we would get into even more of an intense suffering? People often collapse or lose control of themselves.
We are all human, so suffering is very hard for Christians as well. It was hard for the recipients of Peter’s letter as well. They were in a tough situation. Massive persecutions intensified. Holding onto their faith, the physical, psychological, economic, and spiritual sufferings caused great confusion among the believers, even causing some to fall away from their race of faith. Peter addresses Christians scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia about suffering. He urges them not just to endure suffering passively, like turtles withdrawing into their shells, but actively do good in the face of the many evils causing suffering.
13절입니다: "또 너희가 열심으로 선을 행하면 누가 너희를 해하리요?" 사도 베드로가 말하듯, 열심히 선을 행한다면 누가 우리를 해할 수 있겠습니까? 하지만 세상은 믿는 사람들의 선한 행위에 선으로 보답하지 않고, 오히려 악으로 갚습니다. 강자가 약자를 포식하는 세상에서, 세상은 선을 행하는 자들을 죽음의 문턱까지 몰아넣습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 신자들은 왜 계속해서 선을 행하고 고통을 견뎌야 할까요? 17절에 답이 있습니다: “선을 행함으로 고난 받는 것이 하나님의 뜻일진대 악을 행함으로 고난 받는 것보다 나으니라” 선을 행하여 고통 받는 것이 하나님의 뜻입니다. 그러나 우리는 악을 행해도 고통을 받습니다. 어차피 고통은 오는데 왜 굳이 선을 행해야 할까요? 왜 계속해서 하나님을 믿고 교회에 나와야 할까요?
여기서 질문을 드리겠습니다. 신자란 무엇입니까? 기독교인이란 무엇입니까? 기독교인은 교회에 나오는 사람이 아닙니다. 가끔 기도하는 사람도 기독교인이 아닙니다. 교회에서 만나는 모든 사람이 기독교인은 아닙니다. 하지만 기독교인과 악인(세상) 사이에는 명확한 차이가 있습니다. 기독교인은 하나님께 모든 것을 맡긴 사람입니다. 그들의 삶에서는 하나님이 최우선 입니다. 물론, 우리는 때때로 죄를 짓지만, 기독교인은 하나님께 돌아가 회개합니다. 그리고 우리가 신자로서 겪는 고통과 어려움은 하나님께서 알고 계십니다. 하나님은 이러한 모든 상황을 이해하시기 때문에 성령이 이 세상에서 우리가 살 수 있도록 도와줍니다. 하지만 악인의 고통은 다릅니다. 그들의 고통은 궁극적인 고통, 하나님의 심판을 상징합니다. 신자의 고통은 하나님이 알고 계시고 은혜를 배풀어 주시지만, 세상의 고통은 하나님의 심판입니다.
Here is verse 13: “Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?” As the Apostle Peter says, if one eagerly does good, should anyone harm us? No, but the world does not repay the believers with good for their good deeds; instead, it repays them with evil because they are different. In a world where the strong prey on the weak, the world pushes those who do good to the brink of death. Yet, why should the believers continue to do good and endure suffering? Here is verse 17: For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. It's God's will that we suffer for doing good. Yet, we also suffer when we do evil. If suffering comes either way, why bother doing good? Why continue to believe in God and come to church?
Let me first ask you a question. What is a believer? What is a Christian? A Christian is not someone who comes to church. A Christian is not someone who prays every now and then. Not every person that we meet at church will be Christians. But there is a clear difference between Christians and the wicked (the world). A Christian is someone who has surrendered everything to God. It is someone who set God as their number one priority. Sure, we might sin from time to time, but Christians also return to God and repent. And the suffering and hardship that we encounter while we are believers are accounted for by God. God understands them which is why the holy spirit helps us live in this world.
However, the suffering of the wicked is different. Their suffering signifies ultimate distress, a judgment from God. The believers' suffering is accounted for by God, but the world’s suffering is God’s judgment.
베드로는 하나님의 절대적 주권을 믿었습니다. 그는 하나님께서 악을 행하는 자를 심판하시고 선을 행하는 이들에게 보상을 주시는 분임을 믿었습니다. 그러나 베드로가 처음부터 그런 믿음을 지녔던 것은 아닙니다. 예수님께서 대제사장들과 서기관들과 장로들의 손에 고통을 겪고 죽으셔야 한다고 하셨을 때, 베드로는 어떻게 반응했나요? 그는 예수님을 보호하려고 자신의 힘으로 누구의 귀를 베었습니다. 그때 베드로는 자신을 판사로 만들었습니다. 베드로가 또 무엇을 했습니까? 닭이 세 번 울기 전에, 그는 예수님을 세 번 부인했습니다. 그는 하나님을 믿는다고 고백했지만, 결국 베드로는 처참하게 실패했습니다. 그러나 주님은 그를 회복시켜 주셨습니다. 신자와 기독교인은 판사가 아닙니다. 우리는 하나님의 구원이 필요한 죄인일 뿐입니다. 18절 상반절은 우리 죄인이 왜 선을 행할 수 있는지를 명확히 합니다. “그리스도께서도 단번에 죄를 위하여 죽으사 의인으로서 불의한 자를 대신하셨으니 이는 우리를 하나님 앞으로 인도하려 하심이라”
주님은 선을 행하는 데 주저하지 않으셨습니다. 예수님은 하나님을 신뢰하셨고, 더 많은 사람들을 하나님께 인도하려는 하나님의 뜻을 알고 계셨습니다. 우리는 칼에 손을 베어도 엄청 아프지만, 흠과 티 없는 주님께서는 우리를 위해 십자가를 지셨습니다. 그분의 죽음으로 우리는 하나님 앞에 의인으로 설 수 있게 되었고, 의인은 새로운 사명을 받아 삶의 고난의 현장으로 나아갑니다.
Peter believed in the absolute sovereignty of God. He believed in a God who judges the evildoers and rewards those who do good. However, Peter did not always have such faith. Jesus said He must suffer and die at the hands of the chief priests, scribes, and elders. But how did Peter react? He cut off someone’s ears while trying to protect Jesus with his own strength. At that time, Peter made himself THE judge. What else did Peter do? Before the rooster crowed three times, he had denied Jesus three times. Though he professed belief in God, Peter ultimately failed miserably. But the Lord restored him. Believers and Christians are not judges. We are merely sinners in need of God’s saving grace. The first half of verse 18 clarifies why we sinners can do good. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.
The Lord did not hesitate to do good. He trusted in God and knew that it was God’s will to lead more people to Him. We fret over a cut from a knife, yet the Lord, flawless, bore the cross for us. His death allowed us to stand before God as the righteous. The righteous receive a new mission, stepping into the fields of life's hardships.
노아의 삶을 보십시오. 노아는 하나님의 명령으로 120년 동안 방주를 건설했습니다. 다른 이들의 조롱과 비난에도 불구하고, 노아와 그의 가족은 하나님의 뜻을 전하는 것을 자신들의 사명으로 여겼습니다. 하늘이 열리고 땅이 물에 잠겼을 때, 하나님은 악인들에게 고통, 즉 심판을 내리셨고, 사명을 따랐던 노아와 그의 가족은 구원을 받았습니다.
베드로는 유대인들을 위해 복음을 전하고 결국 복음을 위한 밑거름, 순교자가 되었습니다.
사람들은 '고난'이라는 단어를 회피하지만, 우리가 잊지 말아야 할 것은 성도에게 고통은 사명입니다. 사명이 없다면 고통도 없습니다. 현대 기독교인들은 자신의 삶에 때가 묻을까, 감정이 상할까 두려워 고통의 현장을 떠나 영적인 이상형에 머물고자 합니다. 세상은 가혹하고 추악하지만 우리가 한때 그 일부였다는 것을 잊지 맙시다. 우리에게 찾아와 오물을 제거하고 영적 사명을 맡겨주신 주님만을 바라봅시다. 그리고 예수님처럼 세상 속으로 뛰어들어 하나님의 뜻을 적극적으로 펼치고 많은 이들을 그분께 인도합시다.
Look at Noah’s life. Noah built the ark as commanded by God for 120 years. Despite the mockery and criticism of others, Noah and his family saw conveying God's will as their mission. When the heavens opened and the earth was flooded, God judged the wicked with hardship, suffering, and saved Noah and his family who had followed their mission. Peter preached the gospel to the Jews and eventually became a martyr, a seed for the gospel.
People shy away from the word 'suffering,' but we must not forget that for saints, suffering is a mission. Without a mission, there is no suffering. Modern Christians, fearful of getting dirt on their lives or hurting their feelings, flee from the fields of suffering and wish to stay in a spiritual utopia. The world is harsh and vile, but let's not forget that we were once part of it. Look to the Lord who came to us, removed our filth, and entrusted us with a spiritual mission. And, like Jesus, let's dive into the world, spread God's will actively, and lead many to Him through our own actions and faith.
