20240508 [새벽묵상] 금방패와 놋 방패의 인생 | A Life of Gold and Bronze Shields (왕상/1Kings 14:21~31)

Rehoboam King of Judah

21 Rehoboam son of Solomon was king in Judah. He was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city the Lord had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel in which to put his Name. His mother’s name was Naamah; she was an Ammonite.

22 Judah did evil in the eyes of the Lord. By the sins they committed they stirred up his jealous anger more than those who were before them had done. 23 They also set up for themselves high places, sacred stones and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every spreading tree. 24 There were even male shrine prostitutes in the land; the people engaged in all the detestable practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before the Israelites.

25 In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt attacked Jerusalem. 26 He carried off the treasures of the temple of the Lord and the treasures of the royal palace. He took everything, including all the gold shields Solomon had made. 27 So King Rehoboam made bronze shields to replace them and assigned these to the commanders of the guard on duty at the entrance to the royal palace. 28 Whenever the king went to the Lord’s temple, the guards bore the shields, and afterward they returned them to the guardroom.

29 As for the other events of Rehoboam’s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 30 There was continual warfare between Rehoboam and Jeroboam. 31 And Rehoboam rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David. His mother’s name was Naamah; she was an Ammonite. And Abijah his son succeeded him as king.

The prosperity of Solomon's era seems to have reached its peak. As seen in 1 Kings 10:17, Solomon made 300 shields of gold for his bodyguards. However, this glorious prosperity of Solomon's era did not continue to the next generation but ended with Solomon.

When his son Rehoboam became king, the nation's strength declined, and the golden shields that boasted of wealth were all taken by the Egyptian king Shishak. This is a good example of how incomplete the prosperity of this land truly is. However, what is important here is the attitude of Rehoboam after the shields were taken.

Rehoboam, after having the shields taken away, should naturally have examined himself, realized his folly and sin, repented before God, and cried out. However, despite the need for such actions, amidst the nation's declining finances and current situation, he again made shields of bronze instead of gold whenever he went into the temple, replacing the golden shields.

1 Kings 14:27-28 states, "So King Rehoboam made bronze shields to replace them and assigned these to the commanders of the guard on duty at the entrance to the royal palace. / Whenever the king went to the Lord’s temple, the guards bore the shields, and afterward they returned them to the guardroom.

Through Rehoboam's prioritization of formality and appearance over substance, and by replacing the gold shields with bronze ones, we are shown how we should live in this land and what kind of attitude we should have.

We Must Not Prioritize Superficiality and Doctrines (Norms) Alone.

In Rehoboam's attitude of making bronze shields, we can find the appearance of those who prioritize superficiality and doctrines, concealing their emptiness by adopting thorough superficiality and norms. In this era, there are many who, while empty inside, adopt strict superficiality and norms to hide their emptiness.

We often see such people even within the church. That is, there are those who, having lost living faith and consciousness of what God desires, emphasize only the visible superficiality, doctrines, and norms, boasting of a faith life as if only those things make a great saint. These are the same actions as those shown by Rehoboam's attitude in the passage.

There is something more important than outward appearance and doctrines between us and God. That is the "covenant." It is the covenant spoken of in Exodus 19:5, "Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession." However, this significant covenant, promise, is not given the importance it deserves but rather ignored.

This is because our reality is marked by conflicts, divisions, condemnations caused by very small doctrines and conscious differences. Therefore, the Lord reproved these hypocritical appearances and righteous posturing.

Matthew 6:5 says, "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full."

God also warned against plausible appearances with empty formalism. Isaiah 1:4 laments, "Woe to the sinful nation, a people whose guilt is great, a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the Lord; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him."

Thus, God abhorred formalism as well. Therefore, you and I must beware of foolish and fictitious behaviors like Rehoboam, who rely on superficiality and doctrines.

We Must Not Rely Solely on Knowledge and Eloquence.

In Rehoboam's act of making bronze shields, we often see people who use knowledge and eloquence as weapons or means to pursue their own interests. In today's generation, there are many who boast of their good educational background, knowledge, and eloquence, prioritizing themselves over others and seeking ways to easily earn money.

Unfortunately, we also encounter such attitudes within the church. There are those who attempt to do God's work with their academic knowledge and excellent eloquence. Hence terminologies like "salary pastors" emerge, and phrases like "doing business in the church" are heard. Isn't this exactly the image of Rehoboam, who tried to fulfill the role of golden shields with bronze shields? I believe that the work of God should be done not by human ability but entirely by relying on the Holy Spirit.

However, if one tries to do God's work with their own knowledge or eloquence without believing in or relying on the power of the Holy Spirit, this is undoubtedly a shortcut to failure. Of course, knowledge and eloquence are not necessarily exclusive to oneself, and they can indeed be helpful in navigating through life. However, they should never become the essence of doing God's work.

The work of God should be preceded by faith, complete trust in God, and reliance on Him above knowledge and one's own talents. Our talents, knowledge, and various abilities are not the result of our efforts or intelligence, but gifts from the Lord. I hope that the belief that all these can shine and be powerful when we are with the Lord will always accompany us.

We Must Not Focus on High Status and Academic Background.

The final aspect found in Rehoboam's attitude of making bronze shields is the emphasis on one's own status and academic background. There may be no era like today where status and one's educational background are emphasized to such an extent. This is truly a sad reality.

This phenomenon has even influenced the church, where we sometimes see socially high-ranking or wealthy individuals occupying leadership positions, and there have been occasions where it was implied that only such individuals should hold positions of responsibility. Hence, criticisms arise questioning whether only wealthy people can attend church. We must never boast about the status and position we hold in this world.

When looking down from heaven to earth, whether it's a single-story house or a two-story house, all that is seen is the roof. Similarly, in God's eyes, all human beings are the same. That is, all humans are descendants of Adam, and therefore, without exception, all are sinners. However, we must never forget that by God's love and grace, we have been redeemed to be recipients of His mercy.

It is truly regretful to see humans, who in God's eyes are insignificant, boasting about their status or position. Nevertheless, despite this, can one still have a sense of superiority based on status, background, or academic achievements in front of others? There can never be any status or class difference among us.

Colossians 3:10-11 (NIV) says, "and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all." Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, we are called to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

Dear saints,

I pray that this time will be an opportunity for us to reflect humbly on our inner selves. May it be a time when we can honestly examine and confess before the Lord not only the pretense and arrogance within us but also any tendency towards superficial faith. Through this, let us reconsider what is truly more important than how we appear to others in the world.

If indeed we find ourselves living our lives with motives as base as bronze shields, forsaking the pure and noble principles of life, then we must immediately kneel before the Lord in repentance. I pray that we will believe truly in the fact that the One who sets us up and leads us is the Lord, not a life akin to Rehoboam's decline from gold to bronze. May we be those who confess with our lips and believe in our hearts.
